00:00It's time to play your favorite non-Canadian motorcycle game show, CTXP!
00:08And here's your host, Bob Spencer!
00:11Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of CTXP, where we answer questions about motorcycling
00:19that nobody asked.
00:21On today's episode, we've got two players duking it out to determine which one is faster,
00:27sport bikes or sport touring bikes.
00:30Let's meet the contestants.
00:32First up, it's the internet's favorite sport bike bro.
00:35He likes to do rolling burnouts in your neighborhood at 2 a.m.
00:38Everybody, give a round of applause to Barry Henning!
00:43Real proud to be here, representing the best motorcycles on the planet, sport bikes.
00:47I do appreciate this show, CTXP.
00:50I did hear that I could potentially win a free set of slicks, which would be great,
00:54going riding with the bros this weekend.
00:55And you know, it's just like I always said, and it's just like the sticker on my windscreen.
01:00If you're not riding a red line, you're not living right.
01:03Go sport bikes!
01:04All right, Barry does sound very fast, but he has some stiff competition.
01:09And I mean that literally.
01:10It's a geriatric adrenaline junkie representing Team Sport Touring.
01:15Everybody, Jack Kortz!
01:17Thanks for having me, Bob.
01:18I do appreciate it.
01:19I just like fast bikes.
01:21I always have, always will, I think.
01:24And I just like my hands to be warm from some heated grips, wind protection, luggage for
01:29some layers if it gets chilly.
01:31I think other people probably understand that.
01:34And a little more comfort from my back after that construction accident really got to me.
01:39But again, thanks for having me.
01:40I'd just like to say hello to my brother, Steve, in the audience, I think.
01:48All right, sounds like a fierce competition on our hands.
01:51So let's get down to it.
01:53Let's play...
01:54C-T-X-B!
02:16Some people think that sport touring bikes are big and heavy and, well, kind of lame.
02:21But nowadays, you can actually get some pretty freaking fast sport touring machines.
02:26A few are even built around the engines and or chassis of actual super bikes.
02:32So that makes us wonder, just how quick are they?
02:37What we have here are three examples of modern sport touring motorcycles, all related to
02:42super bikes in one way or another.
02:46Kawasaki's Ninja 1000 SX, BMW's S1000 XR, and Aprilia's Tuono V4.
03:04What we're going to do is find out just how well these bikes perform by way of a top speed
03:09test, a quarter mile drag race, and a good old fashioned lap time showdown at a racetrack.
03:16And to keep these overweight wannabes honest, we have also brought out Kawasaki's ZX-10R,
03:21a proper super bike.
03:29We'll run it through the same test to see how fast it is and use it as a yardstick to
03:33determine if modern sport touring bikes can actually hold the candle to a modern sport
03:37bike.
03:39There you have it everybody.
03:42Four bikes, three tests, two bros, one winner.
03:47First up, WFO.
03:53This is Highway 26 in New Mexico, aka the long, straight stretch of road we convinced
04:00the police to shut down so we could take our fire-breathing machines to the top of sixth
04:04gear.
04:07This region is famous for its hot chilies.
04:09Today, however, we were cooking with a different kind of heat.
04:16Up first, the Ninja 1000 SX.
04:24Hey guys, am I good to go?
04:26Yeah, you're good to go.
04:27Clear?
04:28Clear.
04:29Okay, thank you.
04:30Alright, be safe.
04:31Be careful.
04:37Okay kids, 138 horsepower of Ninja 1000.
04:47Here we go.
04:49We're already at 110, 115, 120.
04:53Shift right in fifth gear.
04:56We're in sixth gear.
04:58We are at 136 miles an hour.
05:0315 seconds in, and I was already going twice the 65 mile an hour speed limit.
05:10Things were looking good, until...
05:17What the f*** was that?
05:19Something just flew off the bike.
05:21Maybe a saddlebag?
05:22I have no idea, but he did not seem to have noticed.
05:26Oh, come on!
05:33Woohoo!
05:40Are you only showing us that side of the bike for a reason?
05:45Did I lose a saddlebag?
05:46Yeah.
05:47Doing a good track record with you in luggage, Zach.
05:49How did that happen?
05:50As soon as you clicked into sixth, it came off and went off into the ghetto weeds.
05:57So we get to do the whole thing where we walk down the side of the road and look for luggage again.
06:00Yeah, that's cool.
06:02And while we're at it, sorry Kawasaki, we'll pay for that.
06:09Ah, yes.
06:11The quest for missing luggage.
06:14If you're playing CTXP bingo, take a drink.
06:20After a brief stint of testing the Ninja 1000's off-road chops,
06:24F***
06:26I found the luggage carcass
06:28and returned to base with my tail and a saddlebag between my legs.
06:35It turns out someone forgot to latch the Ninja's luggage.
06:40So we blamed it on the camera crew, like we always do.
06:44Then we fixed the issue using our keen scientific minds
06:49and lined up for another run.
06:54Okay, here we go again.
06:581043 cc's of Sport Touring Fury.
07:01Hopefully with two saddlebags.
07:12100 miles an hour.
07:15120.
07:18Sixth gear.
07:21Showing 141 on the GPS. 142.
07:27Happy report, I did not see any items come off the Ninja 1000 SX.
07:31So far, so good.
07:33151.
07:35152.
07:37Whoa.
07:43Wow, the GoPro's falling off.
07:46What the s***.
07:51Alright, Ninja 1000.
07:57Woo.
08:00Still got both bags, that's a good sign.
08:03Went so fast I peeled the GoPro off.
08:05I mean, it turns out top speed testing is pretty detrimental to equipment.
08:08It's rigorous.
08:09Did you go any faster that time, or?
08:11The second saddlebag cost about four miles an hour, I think.
08:15Hmm.
08:16It's probably worth being able to carry an extra two days' worth of clothes, though.
08:20Having finally clocked a legitimate speed on the Ninja 1000,
08:24we let traffic go by, and I moved on to the next bike.
08:27Stepping up the ladder.
08:30Going from about 138 horsepower to 165.
08:33And 10,000 more dollars of MSRP.
08:36It's pretty remarkable how expensive that BMW is,
08:39but it is laden with pretty much everything you can get in the Motorrad catalog.
08:42Including heated grips.
08:43You gonna turn those on?
08:44I might as well turn them on, they're there, right?
08:47I think that's gonna go a lot faster.
08:54Alright, you Bavarian beauty.
08:57Let's see what you got.
09:00S1000XR.
09:03This is the beating heart of the S1000RR, after all, which is BMW's superbike.
09:09We're already going 100 miles an hour.
09:12Now we're going 120.
09:15Now we're going 130.
09:18The S1000 sounds faster.
09:22I think with an open stretch like this, 165.
09:26We kind of had a theory that some of these bikes might actually go faster in 5th and 6th,
09:30just because of the gearing.
09:32So if it's not tacked out in 6th, if it's not actually going against the limiter,
09:35we decided we would try downshifting to 5th.
09:40Now we're losing speed in 6th gear.
09:43Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
09:47This is just like the Autobahn.
09:50Very, very fast.
09:53Look at it go.
09:56157 miles an hour.
09:59Alright, that's it.
10:08That sounded faster.
10:10We could hear you holding it wide open for, it sounded like, 30 seconds.
10:13What'd you hit?
10:15157 miles an hour.
10:18What did we say the Ninja was?
10:21152, which I would have thought it was going to be a bigger delta than that.
10:24This bike fuels so fast up to 100, 120 miles an hour, agreed?
10:29It just pulls so hard.
10:32But it's just tall and wide, and top speed's all about horsepower versus frontal area.
10:36Could you feel it pushing against the wind?
10:39Was it really struggling to take off those final miles per hour?
10:43We've still got the Aprilia, which has more power and is much smaller, so potentially faster.
10:48I gotta say, I'm looking forward to it. It's pretty fun to go as fast as you can.
10:56The Tuono has a huge engine and comically small luggage.
11:00That's a good recipe for a fast sport touring machine,
11:03and Zach's best shot for competing with the ZX10 Superbike.
11:10Nice.
11:12Happens to the best of us.
11:15You're excited!
11:28Tuono V4, 175 horsepower.
11:31Smallest saddlebags, biggest engine.
11:35Let's see what we got.
11:42Ooh!
11:45There is not a better-sounding engine on the planet as far as I'm concerned.
11:521.8! 1.8!
11:57Six-gear wide open on a 1,077 cc V4.
12:01That's probably pretty thrilling.
12:06I gotta jump down even more.
12:08I can only see the GPS.
12:10I can barely see the road.
12:12164!
12:1512,000 rpm.
12:17Six-gear.
12:18173!
12:19Woo-hoo-hoo!
12:31Feel alive?
12:33I feel very alive. I feel like I just took a B12 shot.
12:37The sound of it just wide open for that long.
12:40You're holding it there for a very-
12:41You can hear it all the way from here?
12:42Oh yeah, absolutely.
12:43You can hear it long before you can see it.
12:44That's wicked.
12:45So, faster than the S1000XR?
12:47173 miles per hour on the GPS.
12:52Are you serious?
12:53173, that is no joke, man.
12:56I did not expect that out of the Tuono.
12:58Way to go!
12:59It's got the high handlebar, the little windscreen.
13:02It's definitely pushing the envelope of what a sport touring bike is.
13:06But hey!
13:07Wow!
13:08So, if you need a heavy dose of sport with your light dose of touring, Tuono's got it.
13:13That is remarkable.
13:14So, small saddlebags, not very good range, small windscreen,
13:19but boy, it'll blow your hair back if you want to go fast.
13:21Heck yeah.
13:22Alright, well, that's going to give the ZX-10 a run for the money.
13:25I really didn't think it was going to register that high.
13:27I'm very impressed.
13:28Yeah!
13:31I didn't expect to be nervous, but I am a little bit.
13:35After watching Zach rage up and down the road,
13:38and now there's all this expectation that the ZX-10 is going to go so fast,
13:42and I think it will.
13:43And frankly, I guess that's what I'm a little intimidated by.
13:46But ultimately, I'm excited.
13:48I got high hopes for this thing getting into the 180s.
13:51We just got to wait for them to get the last of the trucks off the road.
13:54I get to fire this thing down the line.
13:58Thank you!
14:00Alrighty.
14:02We got Kawasaki's ZX-10 Ninja here.
14:0635 more horsepower than the XR.
14:1025 more horsepower than the Aprilia,
14:13and a whole lot less frontal area.
14:15Let's see what 200 horsepower does.
14:24Man, that accelerates fast!
14:25I'm already going 120!
14:28Oh my god!
14:33Pulling so hard still!
14:35160!
14:38Here's 172!
14:39Let's go!
14:57You can hear him shouting from here!
15:05At this point in the video,
15:08everyone watching knows how fast you just went.
15:10But I don't.
15:12I just saw a lot of my life flash before my eyes.
15:14All the way against the limiter,
15:16in 6th gear for at least 30 seconds,
15:18at a steady 181 miles an hour.
15:21Wow.
15:22It showed 189 on the dash, 181 at GPS,
15:25but I had lots of time to confirm it,
15:27because it was just...
15:29And that was rev limiter 6th gear?
15:31Yep, lights flashing at me, just steady at 181.
15:33Wow.
15:34I got pretty scared,
15:37because it's literally revving as high as it can,
15:39going as fast as it can,
15:41and I'm just like, is the drain plug tight?
15:43Is a tire going to explode?
15:45Yeah, man.
15:47The bar has been set, 181 for a top speed.
15:49181.
15:50And what was the throttle again? 173?
15:52172.
15:53172, 173.
15:54Not a huge delta.
15:55Not a huge delta.
15:56You know, if we just had Sprox with more gearing for this bike,
15:58we'd probably go faster.
15:59Probably.
16:00Not up against the wind.
16:01Up against the limiter.
16:02Exactly.
16:03Interesting.
16:04Panically limited, not limited by aerodynamics.
16:07But, you know, we're testing them showroom stock,
16:09because this is the bikes that people purchase.
16:11I think 181 is probably fast enough for the vast majority of humanity.
16:17With that pearl of wisdom from Aerie,
16:19the first test was in the books.
16:22And the score was Superbikes 1,
16:24Sport Touring Bikes 0.
16:26My next chance at redemption on Team Sport Touring
16:28is a quarter-mile drag race.
16:30And you're supposed to do that under sort of,
16:32you know, very calm conditions.
16:34Unfortunately, we've got about a 20-mile-an-hour tailwind
16:36on the drag strip, plus some technical difficulties.
16:38We do have pretty sophisticated GPS equipment
16:40for recording elapsed time and peak miles per hour.
16:42However, it's on the fritz,
16:44so we're going to have to do a lot of testing
16:46to make sure that we're doing it right.
16:48We're going to have to do a lot of testing
16:50to make sure that we're doing it right.
16:52We're going to have to do a lot of testing
16:55to make sure that we're doing it right.
16:57It's on the fritz, so we're going to abandon that.
16:59We're going to go old school.
17:01We're just going to go head-to-head
17:03like anyone else would from a stoplight.
17:05Whoever gets to the end of the quarter-mile first
17:07is going to be the winner.
17:09I assume that will be me on the ZX-10.
17:11He does have more horsepower still,
17:13and less weight still.
17:15That has not changed.
17:17But testing is testing,
17:19so up first, Ninja V Ninja on the quarter-mile.
17:22We're going to do a 3, 2, 1, go?
17:243, 2, 1, go. No jumpsies.
17:26I'll call it.
17:28Okay.
17:30This is a practice 3, 2, 1, go.
17:32It's going to go 3, 2, 1, go.
17:34Copy.
17:363, 2, 1, go.
17:383, 2, 1, go.
17:403, 2, 1, go.
17:423, 2, 1, go.
17:443, 2, 1, go.
17:463, 2, 1, go.
17:483, 2, 1, go.
17:50No big surprise,
17:52the Ninja 1000
17:54didn't stand a chance
17:56against its big brother.
17:58With 60 more pounds
18:00and 60 fewer horses,
18:02Ninja's Bagus
18:04is built for comfort
18:06more than speed.
18:08Bavaria's Rapidus,
18:10however,
18:12is built for both.
18:20Ready to rock and roll?
18:22I am adequately prepared to rock.
18:283, 2, 1, go.
18:38Oh no, he's getting away again.
18:44As soon as you got to the top of first gear
18:46and into second gear,
18:49it was game over.
18:51It's absolute torture on the clutch
18:53of this machine to do that,
18:55but once I get to second gear,
18:57this thing is such a rocket.
18:59I mean, I'm seeing 146 miles an hour
19:01by the time I go past the cone.
19:03Yeah, that's at least 10 or 15 miles an hour
19:05faster than what I'm seeing.
19:07Fairly easy win for the ZX-10,
19:09but Zach is now transferring over to Tuono.
19:11I don't want to say that I'm scared,
19:13but I'm a little nervous.
19:15Barry Henning, you shaking in them shoes?
19:18Not quite. My toes are tingling
19:20a little bit maybe.
19:22The big difference with the Tuono
19:24is that it only weighs a little bit more
19:26than the ZX-10 instead of weighing
19:28a lot more than the ZX-10.
19:30Plus, you know,
19:32the torque of the V4, biggest engine here,
19:34could be good. Could make a difference.
19:36We don't know. We don't know until we test.
19:38That's why we do it. That's why we test.
19:40That's why we roll up to the stoplight and we get it on.
19:48Sport Touring's last hope.
19:52I'm doing this one for Barry Henning.
19:58Three, two, one, go!
20:08Oh, man!
20:10Yeah!
20:14The 60 foot, you definitely got me.
20:16Yeah, it's got that street bike gearing.
20:18You know, the ZX-10's geared so tall.
20:20But, you know how we learned
20:22that the engine is electronically limited
20:24in first and second gear to flatten the torque curve?
20:26Yes, yep.
20:28I swear to God, that's hurting the bike
20:30because I can't let first gear out and let it actually stretch its legs.
20:32I have to short shift to second
20:34to get slightly more torque.
20:36And then by the time, oddly,
20:38that it's in third or fourth gear,
20:40it's like almost hanging tight with that.
20:42Yeah, that's a huge disappointment about that bike
20:45that somehow electronically limited the torque output
20:47in first and second.
20:49I mean, if you're buying a 1077cc monster of a machine,
20:51you want all the horsepower.
20:53It's got traction control, it's got ride mode,
20:55so you think it would have made the difference?
20:57I don't know if I could actually have done it,
20:59but I think it would have been closer.
21:03Sportbikes prevailed yet again,
21:05even with the gnarliest saddlebagged motorcycle
21:07that we could find.
21:09So that's two for Team Sportbike.
21:11I've really only got
21:14one more chance.
21:22Having lost the first two rounds of this fight,
21:24things weren't looking good.
21:26However,
21:28we agreed the final battle was the most important.
21:30Here's the thing.
21:32The first two tests
21:34are all about horsepower and weight
21:36and acceleration and horsepower.
21:38Exactly.
21:40So this racetrack situation
21:42is a different ballgame, people.
21:44We got left turns, we got right turns,
21:46we got braking, we got bumps.
21:48It's the whole package, the whole performance package.
21:50It's representative of performance
21:52in a way that I'm very comfortable leaning into
21:54right now before the test happens,
21:56perhaps less so afterward.
21:58The point is, because his bike says racing
22:00on the side of it,
22:02I have voted Ari to go first
22:04on the racing motorcycle at the racetrack
22:06to set a benchmark time that the sport touring bikes
22:08have to beat.
22:11For him to explain to you how the test will work.
22:13Seems appropriate and I'm happy to.
22:15So we've got this wonderful little racetrack
22:17closed down all to ourselves
22:19and we're going to give ourselves a little bit of time to warm up
22:21and then it's going to be five laps each
22:23on our motorcycles. I will go out first
22:25and hopefully set a respectable lap time
22:27that Zach will then try and match
22:29or potentially best, but I'm not really worried about that.
22:31Team Jack!
22:41This is it folks,
22:43for all the glory to prove
22:45the point that sport tourers
22:47can't hold the candle to sport bikes.
22:49All that pressure is
22:51on my shoulders.
22:53I have no doubt
22:55that the performance of the ZX-10
22:57is superior.
22:59The problem is that I
23:01have to extract that performance.
23:05Start my little lap timer here.
23:07It's go time.
23:11And off we go!
23:13Off to the races, so to speak.
23:41Already getting some
23:43slides out of the rear,
23:45trying to dump throttle in
23:47to do these apexes, but man,
23:49throttle response on this bike is
23:51very abrupt off the bottom.
23:55Come on, Harry.
23:57Riding a full-size superbike
23:59on a track this size
24:01is kind of like flying a jet in a hangar.
24:05You've got a lot of power
24:07and not a lot of space to use it.
24:11The back section of the track
24:13where he is right now is super, super tight.
24:15That's probably the hardest part
24:17on the big ZX-10
24:19is the really, really slow first gear corners.
24:21Transitions well side to side,
24:23but it doesn't make power
24:25until pretty high up in the revs.
24:27That's where it really wants to be.
24:33Thankfully, the ZX-10
24:35is wickedly fast
24:37once you do spin it up.
24:40I was hopeful that the 150 mph
24:42straightaway speed,
24:44not to mention monster brakes,
24:46would make up for any time lost
24:48in the tighter sections.
24:58We're over the side of the tire.
25:00Missing my apex.
25:02Come on, Barry Henning.
25:04What an eight!
25:10I'm convinced
25:12this is the fast lap right here.
25:24It's a lot of work.
25:26I'm sweating.
25:34Yeah, that's going to do it.
25:36Okay.
25:42I was going to give it one more lap,
25:44but I don't know if you noticed,
25:46but I almost just chucked myself
25:48over the high side in that last turn.
25:50I did notice. Was it off-throttle or on-throttle?
25:52It was coming on the throttle.
25:54You know how this thing hits right off close to home.
25:56The time to beat, my friend,
25:58is a 114.44.
26:00Good symmetry there.
26:02Not easy. A little scary.
26:05There's a lot of bumps on it.
26:07That back section has so many transitions
26:09where obviously the ZX-10 is great
26:11at slapping from side to side,
26:13but the fact of the matter is
26:15the apex speeds are so slow
26:17that having your knee on the ground
26:19at like 30 miles an hour,
26:21it just feels awkward.
26:23And then you try and pour the gas
26:25on this thing and it's got no power.
26:27Yeah, it doesn't make power
26:29until you're going much faster than that.
26:31We don't know much about lap times
26:34The gauntlet had been thrown.
26:36All I had to do was ride
26:38this heavier and slower motorcycle
26:40faster than Ari Henning,
26:42who, by the way,
26:44was already taunting me.
26:46Got that ninja name.
26:48You got them genetics.
26:50It's going to be great watching you
26:52bail around with saddlebags on.
26:54Don't remind me.
27:00All right.
27:02Team Sport Touring.
27:04Here we go.
27:12And away he goes
27:14in a hurry to go buy groceries
27:16or go to the office or get his taxes done
27:18or something.
27:24Let's go little ninja!
27:26It's so quiet.
27:28He's at full chat going down the straight
27:31away, but barely sounds like a whisper.
27:33It's like a very large sewing machine.
27:35Suspension's a little bit
27:37wiggly and wobbly on this bike.
27:39But the chassis is
27:41surprisingly good
27:43for a bike with saddlebags.
27:47The two Kawasaki's
27:49are related by name,
27:51but not by engine.
27:53Where the ZX-10
27:55makes power high in the revs,
27:57the Ninja 1000 is just
28:00the opposite.
28:02Lots of torque on tap.
28:04It's predictable and stable.
28:06It's the kind of track bike you'd want to introduce
28:08to your mother.
28:10But it does have its performance limits.
28:15I believe I just heard a footpeg touchdown.
28:19Oh my god, footpegs are buried.
28:21Got to lean way off.
28:23Come on!
28:30I do know, having ridden that motorcycle,
28:32that he's going to struggle
28:34with the ABS. It's very
28:36conservative.
28:38Wide open through the bumps.
28:40The ABS
28:42is freaking out.
28:44And the footpegs are dragging
28:46so hard.
28:48Come on Ninja 1000.
28:52Might be all I got right here.
29:00You made it look like fun.
29:02I could hear you
29:04just torching those footpegs
29:06all around the racetrack.
29:08Yeah, can you hear it?
29:10Oh yeah. You can't hear the engine, it's so quiet.
29:12But when you're banking through the apexes, you hear
29:14So?
29:16I mean, a pretty fun
29:18bike, all things considered.
29:20You looked like you were having a blast.
29:22Yeah, it's super fun.
29:24Come on, the number. I'm not looking intentionally.
29:26I have a number in my head.
29:28117
29:32117.00
29:34How about that, ladies and gentlemen?
29:36The fact that all those times
29:38are so close is indicative
29:40of me just bumping up against my limit
29:42on this machine.
29:44First one in the books, a little more than 2.5 seconds
29:46behind with the
29:48Ninja V Ninja.
29:50I'm going to need the motorcycles to really up their game
29:52to help me catch him.
29:55Lucky for Zach,
29:57the S1000 XR
29:59has bonafide superbike DNA.
30:03It's also extremely red,
30:05which clearly
30:07means it's fast.
30:09Okay, everybody.
30:11We're going to turn on our little lap timer
30:13thingamajig.
30:15And the lap timer says go!
30:17Two exclamation points.
30:19Couldn't have said it better myself.
30:25Woohoo!
30:31Alright.
30:33A lot more horsepower.
30:35Same weight as
30:37the Ninja 1000.
30:39So we'll see how we do.
30:45The brakes on that bike are
30:47genuinely phenomenal.
30:49It's also in combination, it's got the DESA,
30:51so the electronic suspension.
30:54The brakes, but compression damping ramps up at the same time
30:56so the fork doesn't dive very much.
30:58And you can trail brake so hard
31:00and late in the corners with that front end.
31:06The XR changes direction super fast,
31:08for what it is.
31:10But what it is, is tall and heavy.
31:12And that makes the side-to-side transitions
31:14a little tricky.
31:16Ah, I missed my line.
31:18Come on, S1000.
31:20Really? Really?
31:22Woo!
31:28Ah!
31:30I can feel the traction control cutting out.
31:32I feel safe,
31:34but I don't feel fast.
31:36So I just shut it off on the straightaway.
31:38I'm gonna try that.
31:40Hope that helps us out a little bit.
31:42Gotta keep them lap times
31:44coming down.
31:48Woo!
31:52The OTC
31:54is a real wild ride.
31:56I'm having fun, though.
31:58Definitely faster
32:00on the S1000 XR, but
32:02I'm gonna go
32:04with a 16.3.
32:06That's conservative. I wouldn't be surprised
32:08if it was faster.
32:12Come on, S1000. Gotta get out on the straightaway.
32:14Go, go, go. Woo!
32:16Woo!
32:22I'm putting my hand up.
32:24There's no one else on the track, Zach.
32:26That's okay.
32:28That's a good habit.
32:34Looking mighty aggressive out there.
32:36I mean...
32:38A couple of occasions where I was like,
32:40damn.
32:42I had to turn TC off. It was getting in my way.
32:44Oh, really?
32:46Yeah. And it slides at the same approximate point
32:48in the powerband that it wants to wheelie.
32:51I put the gas in second gear and it stepped out
32:53and then as it hooked up, the front wheel came up.
32:55It's going between a slide and a wheelie
32:57and you're like, ahh!
32:59It's a lot to manage. It's a vicious machine
33:01for a sport tour.
33:03What's the time?
33:05I estimated a 16.3,
33:07but I said I would not be surprised
33:09if you were faster.
33:13Wow!
33:151.156!
33:17So, 1.5 seconds faster
33:20than the Ninja 1000, whatever that means.
33:22And 1.1 seconds slower
33:24than the ZX-10.
33:26So, you might say the Tuono's in with a shout, maybe?
33:28I think so, yeah.
33:30Absolutely. It's going to be a lot lighter.
33:32You're not going to have cornering clearance issues
33:34and it's got plenty of horsepower.
33:36Well, it's all on nephew Zach then, isn't it?
33:44Sport Touring's final hope.
33:47Auditus Orgasmus,
33:49Aprilia's Tuono V4.
33:53The time to beat?
33:551 minute, 14 seconds,
33:57.4.
33:59An additional 10 horsepower,
34:01shed a bunch of pounds.
34:03Hashtag no excuses.
34:05I don't know, with the time he did
34:07on the S1000,
34:09I'm a little nervous.
34:13It sounds so good!
34:17Woo!
34:19Whoa!
34:21That is an angry, angry machine.
34:33While the ZX-10
34:35is a total slug off of closed throttle
34:37and that tight back section,
34:39I know for a fact that the Tuono is just going to be
34:41an absolute rocket ship.
34:43It has so much mid-range torque.
34:47Woo!
34:49It's already spinning tire.
34:51Get it, Zach!
35:01Woo!
35:03Got to stand on the pegs in this section.
35:05Ah!
35:07Kicked out of the seat
35:09really hard.
35:11Keep the bike on track when there's so many bumps.
35:17So the Tuono's
35:19power-to-weight ratio
35:21is still not as good
35:23as the ZX-10,
35:25but the torque
35:27is right there
35:29and it creates power immediately.
35:37Off the track,
35:39in the dirt, still upright,
35:41OK.
35:47Huh.
35:51Maybe he feels like
35:53he got everything he could out of it.
35:55Wasn't out there for very long.
36:01That didn't go so well, did it?
36:03No, I mean, it looked like you were
36:05giving it hell, but is that it?
36:09I mean, I only did one flying lap.
36:11Yeah?
36:13But I think that's the best I can do.
36:15Holy ****! Are you serious?
36:171.13.17?
36:19Over a second faster
36:21than the ZX-10.
36:23That's remarkable.
36:25That's staggering!
36:27That is absolutely staggering.
36:29So it's got acceleration and more cornering clearance.
36:31You think it's just stuff over there
36:33where it's getting through those corners that much faster?
36:35Maybe. Maybe the torque when it comes out of corners,
36:37it is limited in second gear still a little bit,
36:39as we've complained about before in this video,
36:41but it still grunts off corners really well.
36:44It's always in the meat of the power,
36:46whereas the ZX-10 in a lot of places,
36:48you have to open the throttle and wait for it,
36:50wait for it, wait for it,
36:52and then it can finally accelerate because of the gearing
36:54and because of how tight the track is.
36:56Yeah, and I think this bike isn't super bike light,
36:58but it's close, closer,
37:00and like you said, the pegs don't drag,
37:02and on a track with a lot of transitions back and forth,
37:04I think it's a sweet spot maybe
37:06for the level that you and I ride at, you know?
37:08I mean, that is way more potential
37:10out of this bike than I even thought.
37:12I thought if I could get a dead nuts lap time,
37:14a Thai ball game,
37:16that would have been like a victory for sport touring.
37:18That's pretty impressive.
37:20That's historic, man.
37:22I'm going to get my helmet and gloves. I want to ride it.
37:26It only took a couple of laps
37:28for me to confirm that the Tuono
37:30was indeed quicker than the ZX-10,
37:32at least around this track.
37:36So, are sport touring bikes
37:38actually faster than super bikes?
37:42Wide open on the longest straightaway
37:44of your life, a super bike is tough to beat.
37:50And in a good old-fashioned drag race,
37:52any bike that comes from the factory
37:54with saddlebags will struggle to keep up.
38:00But, when it comes to
38:02hustling through a section of twists and turns,
38:04the answer is yes.
38:08A sport touring bike can be faster
38:10than a super bike.
38:18All righty.
38:20Well as promised, answers to questions
38:22about motorcycling that nobody asked.
38:24Barry, I'm curious to hear
38:26your thoughts. Yeah, I mean,
38:28a little bit of a surprise there.
38:30It kind of reminds me of the time my girlfriend Charlene
38:32came home with these waffle fries
38:34from Chick-fil-A. She said they were as good as my favorites,
38:36the Curlies from Jack in the Box.
38:38I thought the woman lost her mind,
38:40but I tried them, and holy smokes,
38:42they were great.
38:44What about you, Jack? Any final thoughts?
38:46Do it again, son.
38:48I said, what about you,
38:50Jack? Any final thoughts?
38:52Oh, final thoughts, sure, yeah.
38:54Well, you know, these bikes
38:56are real fast these days, like I said.
38:58It reminds me of my first bike, actually, back in 1970,
39:00something there. All right, well, unfortunately,
39:02we don't have any more time, but
39:04thank you for watching, and tune in next time,
39:06where we try to turn a motorcycle
39:08into a boat. I'm your host, Bob
39:10Spencer, and this has been
39:12C-T-X-P!
39:14C-T-X-P!
39:16C-T-X-P!
39:18C-T-X-P!
