00:00Oh, hello.
00:28This is a scooter, and since the dawn of time, scooters have pretty much been considered
00:33lame, but we're going to change that.
00:37We are going to turn this 2009 Yamaha T-Max 500 into a hot-blooded performance machine,
00:43and then race it at our local club against Tried and True Sportbikes.
01:09Before we got to the business of changing the world, we needed to test the 40,000 mile
01:15dumpster fire of a scooter that our producer had purchased for this project.
01:20You know, just to make sure there weren't any major problems.
01:23Ready?
01:24Yeah.
01:25Uh, one, uh, two, uh, three.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Just like cool runnings.
01:30Come on.
01:31Come on.
01:32We need you to win some races.
01:33And we're away.
01:34It really is stinky.
01:35Very stinky.
01:36Here we go.
01:37Oh.
01:38The brakes are super oily.
01:39Oh, yeah.
01:40Wide open.
01:41Give it the gas, dude.
01:42Whoa, slow.
01:43Whoa.
01:44Whoa.
01:45Whoa.
01:46Whoa.
01:47Whoa.
01:48Whoa.
01:49Whoa.
01:50Whoa.
01:51Whoa.
01:52Whoa.
01:53Whoa.
01:54Whoa.
01:55Whoa.
01:56Whoa.
01:57Whoa.
01:58Whoa.
01:59Whoa.
02:00Whoa.
02:01Whoa.
02:02Whoa.
02:03Whoa.
02:04Whoa.
02:05Whoa.
02:06Whoa.
02:07This thing is a slug.
02:08It's bad.
02:09It's bad news.
02:10I don't think it's running right.
02:11No.
02:12It's not.
02:13Ah.
02:14Clack.
02:15It's quite possibly the slowest scooter I've ever ridden, and that's not what you want
02:32when you're going racing.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Something's bad wrong.
02:35We've got to rip into it, I think.
02:36I mean, we're so eager to tear it apart and try to make it lighter, and I guess now we
02:37just got to dig down to the engine and make sure that it's working properly.
02:38We had planned on, you know, making improvements, but we have to take a couple steps back and
02:39actually make it function as it's supposed to, and then improve upon that.
02:40But the good news is we've got nowhere to go but forward.
02:41When you start with a hunk of junk like this, man, we're just going to improve the heck
02:42out of it.
03:02Now that the T-Max is naked, it's sort of exciting because it's kind of a rad-looking
03:20frame and, I don't know, we're excited all over again.
03:24However, we have discovered a host of new issues that we weren't necessarily expecting.
03:30Peeling the layers back revealed a front end that is very twisted.
03:34The subframe is all crunched up, which is why the battery is hanging out here.
03:37We also can't really sight a straight line down the fork.
03:40It kind of jogs to the left and then bends back.
03:42So that's a big problem.
03:44We are excited about the potential.
03:46It looks unique.
03:47It looks cool, and I'm excited to see it go down a racetrack.
03:49Agreed.
03:50After confirming that the fork tubes were, in fact, mortally wounded, we turned our attention
04:01to the engine.
04:03Sadly, its problems were more complicated than we expected.
04:08So at this point, the scooter is not running on both cylinders.
04:10Did a compression test, and the number one cylinder has no compression.
04:15I'm going to pull the cylinder head off because I'm pretty sure there's some sort of damage
04:19to either the valve or the valve seat.
04:23I'm not sure if you can see that that exhaust valve has a chunk of it missing.
04:29It's not supposed to look like that.
04:35Fixing the broken valve led Ari down a rabbit hole of rebuilding the entire cylinder head.
04:43And since we were planning on torturing this T-Max around a racetrack, he went ahead and
04:47upgraded the transmission and replaced the clutch.
04:53Then it was off to the dyno to confirm that we did indeed have a fire breather.
05:17We are at 41.39 horsepower.
05:20Good, not great, as Zach would say.
05:23Unfortunately, a Ninja 400 makes about 45 horsepower with just a pipe, and a Ninja 400
05:27weighs about 100, 150 pounds less.
05:30So hopefully we'll make some time up with skill.
05:35Zach and I still have some of that, right?
05:39Next up were the small tasks of braking, handling, and aerodynamics.
05:44Even Zach knew that in order to go fast, we needed to look fast.
05:50This is a Kawasaki ZX-10 nose cone circa 2011.
05:55The front subframe was bent from the same front impact that bent the fork.
05:59So I stripped all the stuff we don't think we need off the subframe, and I'm gonna re-weld
06:04some of this stuff and try to brace it up so that it's strong enough to hold this on
06:08the front for a little bit of aerodynamics, but mostly to house this enormous mess of
06:15electronics and wiring and the battery.
06:30To do more than look fast, we still needed sticky race tires, and those simply were not
06:36available for the T-Max's 15-inch wheels.
06:39Luckily, a 17-inch front wheel from the T-Max's cousin, a Yamaha R6, fit almost perfectly
06:45on the Scoot's freshly refurbished Andriani fork.
06:49The rear wheel, on the other hand, was a lot more complex.
06:53Complex enough that Aerie bought a lathe.
06:56What we've got here is the rear wheel off a CFMoto 450SS.
07:01It was a bike we had in the shop that we used to size up a 17 for the back of the T-Max.
07:06We have had a machinist hog this out, so the cush drive used to be in here, with the idea
07:10being that it will now receive an adapter that I'm going to make from this puck of aluminum
07:15on the lathe.
07:17We're gonna mount up the spline drive from the original T-Max wheel, as well as the rear
07:20brake disc, and then this is going to slide into the back of the bike, and then we're
07:24going to run a front 120 17, because that's all that will fit with the clearance we've
07:30got on the swing arm.
07:52Well, this is not how we normally like to operate in the shop.
07:55This right here is a bad sign.
07:57We are well behind schedule with lots still to do.
08:01Basically, we were thinking we would eat dinner near the track, which is three hours away,
08:06in about 30 minutes.
08:08Which is to say we are very behind schedule, which isn't that unusual for going to the
08:13racetrack, but this is, like, especially behind schedule, and we're kind of up against it.
08:27Pull.
08:46Rise.
08:52Anything?
08:58Everything's plugged in.
09:03Yeah!
09:04Oh, that sounds like throttle position sensor.
09:11Are you holding it at all, or no?
09:14Should just be a happy candle.
09:16Yeah.
09:17Fuel injected.
09:20Yeah, there's something loose.
09:21They're not connected properly.
09:24The bike had run only a few hours before, which meant we probably screwed something
09:29up in the mad dash to put it back together.
09:32We checked the throttle position sensor, fuel lines, spark plugs, the fuel pump, half a
09:39dozen other things, and nothing.
09:41Nothing.
09:48Uh.
09:50Uh.
09:53It's getting late.
09:54It's getting cold.
09:55Our Tontons aren't going to survive.
09:58Well, that's good, because then I can cut one open, crawl inside, and go to sleep.
10:03Using the force, and some advice from the T-Max's shop manual, we decided to hook the
10:10busted instrument cluster back into the bike and use the diagnostic function to look for
10:15the problem.
10:20Whoa!
10:21Cool.
10:22Well, we discovered some misleading instructions emblazoned on the surface of this tip-over
10:26sensor.
10:27Every motorcycle has one of these things, these fuel-injected bikes, that if you fall
10:31over, it cuts the fuel, it cuts the ignition, so that the motor doesn't start from oil and
10:35whatnot.
10:36It says up.
10:37We figured up is like this, in this orientation.
10:40However, Yamaha wants up to literally point up.
10:44Just to make absolutely sure, let's just make sure it starts.
10:58Okay.
11:00Guess we need to load up.
11:01Let's go.
11:02Let's go.
11:03Let's go.
11:04Let's go.
11:28Chuckwalla Valley Raceway is a 2.7-mile strip of sunburned pavement located about an hour
11:33east of Palm Springs.
11:35And this weekend, the place was buzzing with riders eager to make their mark on Round 3
11:40of the CVMA Championship.
11:45To avoid prying eyes on our bold new machine, we isolated ourselves at the far end of the
11:50paddock and started strategizing.
11:56There is practice going on right now, so hopefully we get some shakedown laps.
11:59The bad news is that practice has already been going on for hours, so we have very little
12:03time to get out there and actually ride this thing.
12:05The good news is that it runs also.
12:07That's good.
12:08But, yes, the point is, Ari and I might each only get one session today.
12:13One 20-minute session.
12:14One 20-minute session to shake this thing down and see if it works with ergonomics that
12:18it wasn't designed to have and bodywork it wasn't designed to have.
12:20Suspension, brakes, tires, wheels.
12:22Suspension, brakes, tires, and wheels.
12:23So many changes.
12:24All of the question marks that surround this soon-to-be-great machine.
12:28All of that is to say, if there is a time that you're planning to cross your fingers
12:32for us in this episode, now is that time.
12:40Like Sir Edmund Hillary or Neil Armstrong, Zach was about to bravely go where no man
12:45or woman had ever been.
12:48Not to the world's highest peak or the surface of the moon, but somewhere even more intimidating.
12:54The racetrack.
12:55On a hastily built T-Max 500.
13:07Definitely a little bit of imposter syndrome.
13:10Rolling through the paddock on a scooter with other motorcycles around.
13:16Real motorcycles.
13:18In order to be inconspicuous, I have worn the brightest leathers that I own.
13:24Awesome idea, right?
13:30Nervous.
13:32It's just a lot of pressure and a lot of excitement to think that this might be the first of many
13:39scooter superbikes.
13:42Alright, I'm going to light the fuse on it.
13:47I mean, there is perceptible acceleration.
13:50That's good.
13:57It turns really slowly because it's so long, but it actually seems pretty responsive.
14:01That's probably partly the tires.
14:08Okay, my first victims.
14:13The scooter superbike will take over.
14:16Okay, there they go.
14:17This is maximum thrust, everybody.
14:21It's very exciting that I'm passing people already, though.
14:25Am I in the slowest possible session of this entire track day?
14:28Maybe, yes.
14:30But still, we're 2-0 on passes to being passed.
14:38God, it's so hard to lean off of.
14:46Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
14:49You know, it doesn't handle too bad.
14:51It really doesn't.
14:57The T-Max superbike takes a corner speed.
15:01Look out.
15:02Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
15:11Holy crap, Mikey Drag.
15:13Wow.
15:15Come here, you victim, you.
15:17Yes.
15:21Not only did the home-built scooter superbike hold together, but it was pretty good.
15:28Smooth, predictable, and yeah, maybe a little down on power.
15:33But test flight number one was a success, and now Captain Ari Henning was on deck.
15:41Ha, ha, ha, ha.
15:43Oh, dynamite.
15:47More fun than scary?
15:49I would say it's a combination of both.
15:51That's what makes it enjoyable, right?
15:53Honestly, I can't wait for you to try it.
15:55Considering how hard we've worked on this thing, I can't wait for you to actually spin around on it.
15:59It's not perfect, but it's an experience, and it's unique.
16:02Well, thanks for shaking it down.
16:04I'll get geared up.
16:11Wow.
16:24Ha, ha, ha.
16:26Ha, ha, ha, ha.
16:29I'm going out in a group with significantly faster riders than what Zach had to deal with,
16:35which I think might not be great for my confidence.
16:40Ha, ha, ha, ha.
16:45Here we go.
16:47Time to give it a shot.
16:50Let's see what we built.
16:59Okay, I got some clear track. Let's give it to guns.
17:04Woo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo.
17:06Whoa, whoa.
17:07Might be one of the strangest machines I've ever ridden.
17:18Oh, just knee down.
17:19Woo, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
17:31Oh my gosh, I'm getting blitzed.
17:36Wow, that makes me feel slow.
17:41Zach's session had me feeling hopeful, but he was in the slowest group at the track,
17:46and I was not.
17:50The scooter was taking a beating from the faster bikes and riders,
17:54and my body was taking a beating from the T-Max's awkward ergos.
18:00Ergonomics are so bizarre.
18:02Your feet are so far back and so far apart
18:06that when you lean off the bike, you're almost leaning past your foot in a way
18:12that makes it a really awkward squat.
18:16And then the clip-ons are so low and far forward,
18:20like my arms are bending at my wrists, straining my wrists in a really weird way.
18:25All right.
18:27That's it for me.
18:33Well, that was unique, and I'm not going to quite say exciting.
18:38The first lap was exciting, and then after that, I was just getting strafed.
18:42So, it works, but because this is a track day and not the race,
18:47we don't know quite how well it works,
18:49compared to other equally-sized machines, really.
18:53Which means, we've got to grid up tomorrow and find out.
19:13Race day had arrived.
19:16And along with it, hundreds of riders from all over North America,
19:21about a dozen of which would be in our class,
19:24some of them not old enough to vote.
19:27We knew the bike would get around the track,
19:30but could it keep up with a field of 400cc sport bikes?
19:34Ari would be the first to find out.
19:37Wish me luck.
19:39You got it, man. Have fun.
19:41Yeah!
19:42I almost went to sleep.
19:43Yeah!
19:44I almost went to shift it into gear.
19:53Final and immediate call to grid, race number one,
19:56Formula Old Troy Wait and American Thunder.
19:59All right, let's check out and see who we got in this race.
20:03Bike number 751.
20:05Ah! So, this is kind of cool.
20:07Check it out.
20:08So, Ari Henning is on a 2009 Yamaha T-Max 500cc,
20:15wait for it, scooter!
20:18Pretty cool, pretty cool.
20:20But I think he may be a little outgunned out there
20:23versus these sport bikes.
20:25I've got 14 motorcycles ahead of me,
20:28including two kids who are teenagers
20:31who have been racing in Europe at a high level.
20:34So, this isn't exactly a beginner's class.
20:36So, this isn't exactly a beginner's class.
21:07Start went about as well as he thought it would.
21:10Not great.
21:11But first thing he did was try to ride around the outside of someone.
21:14So, that means confidence is peaking a little bit.
21:18Looks like he's doing well so far.
21:22Come on, super scooter!
21:25Oh no, he's getting away!
21:27More power!
21:29I need more power!
21:32Oh man, I can already see the leaders.
21:34Many turns ahead of me.
21:37Whoa!
21:43Ari Henning currently running track days right now.
21:48All right, I'm all by myself.
21:50Not exactly encouraging.
21:53He's certainly getting absolutely dropped on the straightaways.
21:57Corner speed seems okay,
21:59but it can be hard to make up for that kind of bad.
22:02Ari Scooterberry Henning doing his best.
22:05Hanging in there.
22:12Sadly, the scooter slid to the back of the pack pretty quickly.
22:16While it was decent through the corners,
22:18the T-Max was outgunned on the straights.
22:22It was a lonely race,
22:24but at least I wasn't alone in my weirdness.
22:27This guy's on a Panamerica.
22:32Nice!
22:35All right!
22:37You really made a pass!
22:41To be clear,
22:43that Harley's in a different class,
22:45and he started behind me.
22:50Oh!
22:53Not a proud position to be in.
22:57It's officially a racing machine, everybody.
23:00And so far, not a very good one.
23:04Well, I set the bar pretty low.
23:07Hopefully, Zach has better luck in his class.
23:11I mean, it works better than we expected in a lot of ways.
23:14It actually handles pretty well.
23:16Like, I'm gaining some confidence.
23:18It's just so dog slow.
23:20And honestly, one of the hardest parts about racing this bike
23:22is how uncomfortable it is.
23:24My neck hurts, my wrists hurt, my knees hurt.
23:26And that was six laps.
23:28It was six laps.
23:30Not exactly an endurance race.
23:32And when I saw the cross flags indicating halfway,
23:34I was like,
23:36what the hell?
23:39I gotta say, my confidence isn't exactly
23:41through the roof right now.
23:43But,
23:45changing the world takes time.
23:57Starting from the back of the grid,
23:59Zach quits on there.
24:01Team Red's Yamaha scooter
24:04tried to show the sport bikes
24:07what a scooter can do.
24:10Row four,
24:12P10.
24:15Gridded up last, basically.
24:17Let's see what we can do here, kids.
24:21Hooray!
24:24I have made up zero to places.
24:26Oh, no, there's people behind me passing me now.
24:27Didn't see that coming.
24:29Son of a gun.
24:31We're off to the races, everybody.
24:33Trying to keep up with these ninjas
24:35and R3s and whatnot.
24:38I got one in my sights.
24:40Ah, come on, scoot.
24:49Come on, scoot.
24:51You can do it.
24:57We're hanging, we're hanging.
24:59Ah!
25:02Oh, boy.
25:04It's gonna be a very long six laps
25:07trying to keep up with all these bikes.
25:10I need all the drive I can get.
25:17He's doing really well in the corners.
25:19He's reeling some people in,
25:21but, man, the straightaways.
25:22Oof.
25:26It was no surprise to find out
25:28that my problem was the same as Aries.
25:31Not enough power.
25:43The corners were going pretty well,
25:45but the straightaways
25:47were every racer's nightmare.
25:53I also spent six laps
25:55watching baby ninjas drift away from me.
25:58And in the end,
26:00the result was practically the same.
26:03Not going great for Zach out there, unfortunately.
26:06More of the same what we saw in my race,
26:08which is him getting passed a lot.
26:12Yeah.
26:14It's a little frustrating.
26:16Short lap.
26:19Not doing a good job
26:20at convincing me
26:22that scooters are the wave of the future
26:24that those guys purport them to be.
26:27I'm so tired.
26:29Ah.
26:31No bueno.
26:36That doesn't look well.
26:44Tails between our legs.
26:47Not necessarily a great showing today.
26:50We qualified poorly.
26:52We grid poorly.
26:54We finished poorly.
26:56So probably, honestly,
26:58the worst race finishes we've ever had
27:00in our entire careers.
27:02Pretty discouraging.
27:04To that end, we're thinking
27:06it's maybe the bike.
27:08Problem is pretty clear.
27:10Not enough ponies under the hood.
27:12It needs more power,
27:14and we think we know
27:16what we're doing.
27:25Under cover of darkness,
27:27we wheeled the not super enough
27:29scooter super bike
27:31into our cabin on Chuck Wallace campus.
27:33There, we unboxed something
27:35that we had hoped
27:37we wouldn't have to use.
27:39The classes Zach and I
27:41are racing the scooter in
27:43have an engine size limit of 500 cc,
27:44but the G-Max here has 499 cc,
27:46which is clearly not enough
27:48because this thing is painfully slow
27:50in a straight line.
27:52So what we're going to do is cheat
27:54and make the engine bigger
27:56with this 530 cc big bore kit
27:58we ordered from Italy.
28:00And we're going to do all that work
28:02inside this lovely cabin
28:04we rented at the racetrack,
28:06which, by the way,
28:08is also very clearly against the rules.
28:10But we're going to clean up.
28:12Hospitality's never going to know.
28:14There's no competitors
28:16seeing that we're cheating.
28:18So basically,
28:20we got to break one rule
28:22in order for it to be clear
28:24that we're not cheating
28:26doing the second thing.
28:28And it's a spider web of lies
28:30at this point,
28:32but you got to break a few rules
28:34to make an omelet or whatever.
28:36A top end rebuild
28:38is a complex job to do
28:40on the floor of a kitchen.
28:42We had to yank the tank,
28:44and then we had to slide in
28:46bigger pistons,
28:48set the valve clearances,
28:50and install the cams.
28:52And then we still had to put
28:54everything back together.
28:56Cheating is a lot of work.
28:58Just over three hours.
29:00And the super scooter
29:02is 6% larger
29:04in the bore.
29:06We get 6% faster lap times.
29:08That'll be pretty good.
29:10I don't know if that's how
29:12the math works out,
29:14and yeah, we just got to
29:16roll it out of this cabin.
29:18We got to cover our tracks,
29:20clean the floor,
29:22hope it fires up.
29:24Hey!
29:26Rest up.
29:28You got a big day tomorrow,
29:30big guy.
29:32Our unsuspecting competitors
29:34awoke to a new dawn
29:36of scooter dominance.
29:38We had 6% more engine
29:40and two more chances
29:42to prove that our T-Max
29:44belonged on the sport bike stage.
29:46Go get em, man!
30:02Alright, so,
30:04race number five,
30:06heading out onto the track.
30:08Here we go.
30:10Lining them up.
30:13Okay.
30:15This is it.
30:17This is my final chance
30:19of redemption here
30:21to see if a scooter
30:23can hold its own
30:25against all these
30:27true sport bikes.
30:29Okay, here we go!
30:31Let's go!
30:47Wide open throttle.
30:49It's good.
30:51It feels like it's got
30:53a little extra something.
30:55I'm closing into this guy
30:57in the corner.
30:59That's pretty cool.
31:01I think I cracked the throttle
31:03open early.
31:05I think I could have hung with him.
31:07Might have pulled the draft.
31:13I'm not seeing any bikes
31:15on the back straightaway
31:17getting absolutely plastered
31:19like yesterday,
31:21so maybe it's working.
31:23Maybe, just maybe it's working.
31:25These guys aren't getting
31:27away from me today.
31:29I might be gaining on them.
31:31We got a little something
31:33extra today.
31:40He is practically last,
31:42but he's got up in sight.
31:44He's got up in sight.
31:46This is good.
31:51We got a race, guys!
31:53We got a race!
31:56Through the twistier sections
31:58of the track,
31:59he pulls off of that
32:01by trying his darnedest
32:03to get around those
32:05two ultra lightweight bikes.
32:07He has caught the riders
32:09in front of him.
32:12I'm not going to say
32:14he's got them right where
32:16he wants them,
32:18but this is great news.
32:21And he's able to hold
32:23onto the back of the two
32:25ultra lightweight bikes
32:27in front of him,
32:29so this is good,
32:31this is good, this is good,
32:33this is good.
32:35Come on, Harry,
32:37full throttle.
32:39Gotta get on the inside
32:41going into this corner.
32:43Oh, here he goes.
32:45Is he going to get a pass?
32:47Guy will run around the inside
32:49and does indeed pass
32:51the ultra lightweight bike,
32:53so Ari Henning
32:55moves up a position
32:57in the corner.
33:00Ah, so much gravity
33:02in the ball.
33:04My ankles and wrists
33:06and knees and neck hurt.
33:11It's a one or two lap time
33:13on a scooter.
33:15As much as we might
33:17make fun of them,
33:19it's a pretty quick lap time.
33:21It's a pretty quick lap time.
33:23It's a pretty quick lap time.
33:25It's a pretty quick lap time.
33:27It's a pretty quick lap time.
33:30I'm ready for that
33:32white flag, folks.
33:34My body is tired.
33:36Ah, s***.
33:38The scooter has been repassed.
33:40It is fairly difficult to ride
33:42and I think maybe the fatigue
33:44is setting in.
33:46Alright, so here comes the scooter.
33:48He is right behind another rider
33:50heading into 16.
33:52Is he going to be able
33:54to make the pass?
33:56It is close.
33:57He comes on to the front straight.
34:10I actually passed somebody.
34:12Yeah, I know.
34:14I had a bit of a race out there.
34:16I think you're going to have a shot
34:18at clawing your way up
34:20through the grid this time.
34:22I got a couple of smears
34:24out of the rear tire.
34:25There's a couple of splices on it now
34:27so we do have fresh rubber.
34:29Maybe put that on
34:31and give yourself the best shot you can get.
34:33Shall we?
34:36Aside from a cheater engine,
34:38nothing boosts a rider's confidence
34:40like virgin rubber.
34:42Thanks to our friends at Bridgestone,
34:44Zach would have a brand new rear tire
34:46and one last chance
34:48to prove the T-Max's potential.
34:56It is pretty cold.
34:59Nervous. I'm nervous.
35:01Yeah, I bet you are, man.
35:03That's how you know you're human.
35:05You got this.
35:07Fresh rear tire.
35:09A little extra something-something.
35:12Okay.
35:14Go get him.
35:16Thanks, man.
35:25Final call for wrist number 13.
35:28Scooter number 751.
35:32The fate of all superbike scooters
35:35rests on Zach Roach's shoulders.
35:38No pressure, Zach.
35:45Got ideal conditions at the track
35:49and I have zero excuses.
35:53Pressure's on for
35:55a finish that we can be proud of.
36:03Let's go, scooters!
36:10Oh, yeah, it's definitely got more space.
36:18Looks like the scooter's in the mix.
36:25Oh, we lost somebody!
36:27Ooh, somebody's sliding off
36:29the outside of Turn 4 there.
36:37Mr. Quartz appears to be in fourth place.
36:40Kind of hard to identify from this distance,
36:42but he got a solid start.
36:44It's just a matter of, like,
36:46holding people off from motor and buy-in, but...
36:48Let's see what happens.
36:50We're on the back straightaway.
36:52This is the test of the bigger motor.
36:55Nobody got by us.
36:57That's pretty good.
37:05Wow, and the scooter went in fourth.
37:08No way, huh?
37:15Once you model-feed that thing now,
37:17like, what is with this 202 thing?
37:19202!
37:21Hells yeah!
37:23Now, that can't be the scooter.
37:25The guy actually came by, did a 202,
37:27and it was the scooter.
37:29I'm like, no kidding.
37:31Scooter's mobbin'.
37:33Got a fresh slick on the rear.
37:35He's killin' it, guy.
37:43Ah!
37:45The curb on the inside.
37:47Can't afford those mistakes.
37:49Black Quartz doing everything he can
37:51to hold on to that fourth place.
37:52Eric, givin' him the hurry-up.
37:54Lettin' him know he's got riders
37:56right behind him that are gaining.
38:03Zach's holding his own out there
38:05against the ultra-lightweight bikes.
38:08I don't know.
38:10I think they're redeeming themselves here.
38:18One lap remains.
38:22It's not so much that the Super Scooter
38:25proved that it's better than a sport bike,
38:28but it proved that it can be as good
38:30as these small sport bikes.
38:33It's done exactly what most people
38:35would say that it can't do.
38:38It's a top-five finish!
38:43I hate to give these guys any credit,
38:46but I say good job.
38:48Thanks a lot.
38:50What was the best time?
38:53202.152.
38:55202.152!
38:57That means he dropped like
38:59almost six seconds from yesterday.
39:01We need a 203 standing start.
39:03That's pretty stupendous.
39:05Pretty amazing.
39:07I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed.
39:09Good intel. Thank you.
39:11Wow!
39:13I don't remember the last time
39:15I had such satisfaction
39:17with a top-five finish.
39:19And it has absolutely
39:20revitalized my love
39:22of being at the racetrack.
39:25Yeah!
39:33I got tossed by a f****** scooter, dude!
39:36Good riding, bro.
39:40I'm glad I finally shook out
39:42to be a good race,
39:44and you did awesome,
39:46and the scooter did awesome,
39:48and I feel like we've redeemed
39:50pretty dissatisfied
39:52to having a good time.
39:54I agree.
39:56And that's all you can ask for, really.
39:58All you can ask for.
40:00And all it took was cheating.
40:02It's not the lesson we want
40:04to teach the audience,
40:06unfortunately.
40:08We should probably fess up.
40:10Yeah, we should do something.
40:12Before we celebrated too much,
40:14we went to the race officials
40:16and confessed to our crimes
40:18against displacement.
40:20Here are the results
40:22of the last two races.
40:24We would never condone cheating.
40:26Unless...
40:28it's in the name of science.
40:30We learned that it's no easy feat
40:32to make a hot-blooded performance machine
40:34when you start with a scooter.
40:36Especially if it's trashed.
40:38It's really in bad shape.
40:40Oh, my goodness.
40:42They're heavy,
40:44slow,
40:46and not particularly comfortable
40:48when you try to ride them
40:51Come on!
40:53But plenty of people do it
40:55all over the world.
41:03It's a good reminder
41:05that there's a racer
41:07inside every rider
41:09and a superbike lurking
41:11in every machine.
41:14Sometimes,
41:16you just have to dig
41:18a little deeper
41:20to find out
41:22what's inside.
41:24Howdy, folks.
