00:00Welcome to the East Midlands Derby where around these parts this is the biggest match and
00:19head-to-head in the Premiership. Champions Northampton are here to take on their arch-rivals
00:24Leicester with local bragging rights and pride up for grabs. Just one point separated them
00:30coming into this, what will happen when things kick off? Let's find out in the company of
00:35David Flattman, Austin Healy and Nick Mullins.
00:39Mattioli Woods, Welford Road to the next instalment of the Gallagher Premiership's big derby weekend.
00:45It's been magic so far today at Kingsholm and Sandy Park but which really is the biggest
00:51derby in the land right now? Ask any of this lot and I think you'll get the same answer
00:54whether you're north of Market Harbour, border country or south of it. This is the one and
01:00Michael Chekka, seat belting up for the first time in one of these and back involved after
01:04last weekend's suspension. Leicester have Andre Pollard and Julian Montosha involved
01:10again for the first time this season. Returning to club colours after beavering away in the
01:15Rugby Championship. Other notable alterations for the 15 that began the win in Newcastle,
01:20Harry Wells into the second row for the injured George Martin, Olly Cracknell back at number
01:25eight, Joe Hayes at tight head and a new midfield combination as well with Dan Kelly and young
01:31Joseph Woodward paired together.
01:36On this weekend of all weekends, significant injury issues for Phil Dowson to overcome.
01:41Fraser Dingwall hurt himself with England at the beginning of the week. Tom Litchfield
01:45comes in at 13 for his first run out of the season. Tom James failed an HIA last weekend
01:52so with Alex Mitchell still unavailable, a thought for teenage scrum half Archie McParland
01:58in what will be just his second Premiership start. Alex Coles has been added to the list
02:03of absent as well. Fijian Timo Miyano-Vanua gets his first start of the season amongst
02:09the replacements. Make a note of debutant Gavin Thornberry, Trevor Davison, Pearson
02:13Pollock, Olly Sleight-Home, because you can be sure that Leicester have.
02:20Referee is Anthony Woodthorpe, right of passage today for him, keeping law and order for the
02:24first time in an East Midlands derby. And on Premiership derby weekend, maybe the spiciest
02:29of the lot, and we're all about to enjoy it together again. To take the East Midlands
02:35thrill ride. Andre Pollard's first job back in stripes this season is to kick Leicester
02:42underway and it's high and straight down the middle, and an opening test for Saints
02:46full-back and captain Furbank. Leicester in green, Saints in white, and in the white cap
02:57it's the hooker Curtis Langdon who got up in front of the group this week as a debutant
03:03in this contest last season to tell the newbies what it's all about, and Langdon wants it
03:09again. Archie McParland, no Alex Mitchell, no Tom James, so the 19-year-old parachuted
03:21in. What a day ahead for him. Anthony Watson pulled to the floor by Tommy Freeman. Nicky
03:33Smith arrived this season, his first East Midlands derby. Jack Van Portfleet, and then
03:43Joseph Woodward, 21-year-old, drinking all this in for the first time as well, helping
03:48to provide some width. And Leicester's chase for the ball, Tigerish. Nice little pass over
03:59the top, isn't it? Both sides trying to look for the sides. We've seen that all weekend,
04:03a lot of width in the games. This is a great chip and chase. And then they just do the
04:08right thing by staying on their feet, trying to get over the ball. Support has to work
04:12all the way back round to swing their bodies round to come through the gate. That's where
04:15the penalty arrives from. You have what look like a couple of bog standard run-of-the-mill
04:20phases in midfield from Leicester around the halfway line, but when that ball, when it
04:24is run-of-the-mill, when the ball is quick once or twice, you just narrow up that defence,
04:27you narrow them in. Ideally, that produces space outside. That's exactly what happened,
04:32so it wasn't without method, that.
04:41Julio Montosha, Leicester's captain again, led Argentina to an historic rugby championship.
04:47He's back in club colours, and he targets Chessom. Angus Scott-Young doing all he can
04:54along with his mates to bring that ball to the ground, which they've managed to do.
04:59So Cracknell will reset. Jack Van Portfleet just pops it up for Liebenberg. Hands on the
05:16floor once more. Second Northampton penalty in quick succession at the breakdown. Sam
05:22Graham the number eight today. It'll be good to see if they go for the tap-and-go here.
05:33Any smart moves, do you think, Flats, or just pure Bosch?
05:36Hurricane, here it comes.
05:43Leicester peeling away to the left-hand side. Chessom gets it away. Van Portfleet stretching
05:50What East Midlands derby dreams are made of. A try in the opening minutes, and a try for Leicester.
06:02Freddie Stewart's first involvement in this East Midlands derby was to smash his opposite
06:08number, George Furbank, from the first kick-off, and this is clever from Leicester. They use
06:11a massive man on the ball, a massive man on the ball then, throwing the pass in Chessom,
06:17Chessom draws defenders. And if you've got Freddie Stewart, yes, he's good in the air,
06:22we know that. He's also six foot five and heavy, so you may as well use him near the
06:28line if you possibly can with a bit of momentum. So two excellent ball carriers who demand
06:34respect, sucking the defenders. Give it to the big man.
06:42Last weekend, the fourth and bonus point, securing one up in the north-east against
06:46Newcastle in the opening try here, and Andre Pollard, who's been drilling that routine
06:51in the Rugby Championship, 7-0.
06:54Hannibal Leicester said he loves it when a plan comes together, particularly from the
06:57forwards. Nice little tap play. Actually, Northampton read it really well. He gives
07:02the ball a little bit too early, which leaves three defenders there, they're numbered up
07:07three on three. As Flats said, he's such a good outside shoulder carry.
07:14Langdon to the front once more, and Kemeny, and to Langdon, and he spreads it wide, and
07:19the charge from Freeman. Very nearly there. Up to the line, it's spun loose. How did it
07:28spin loose?
07:29Scored, hasn't he? Graham scored here. I think he's in one reach.
07:33I think he's lost it forward into in goal.
07:37Just check it. OK, so Jaco, on-field decision is no try. We think he's lost it forward
07:42into in goal.
07:43Just tell me where the restart is, please.
07:45Yeah, we'll take a look.
07:47Montage is asking about the blocking line that's run on the outside by Litchfield. I
07:52don't think we'll go back to that, but he's down. Does he reach?
07:59Andrew Jack is the TMO today.
08:03Graham.
08:04I think he propels himself with his foot there. His right foot. Watch his right foot go down.
08:10He's stopped moving there. He puts his right foot in the turf to move forward a little
08:15bit further.
08:16Well, you can't see the right boot there, and in the last angle you couldn't see his
08:19hand. You couldn't see the ball.
08:22We actually can't see the footage clearly because the clock and the score is in the
08:26way.
08:27Well, the decision, remember, is no try, which is critical.
08:30I think the key here, Nick, is his right foot. He's stopped short here. Then he puts his
08:36right foot down there to push forward again. And does he do it one more time with his knee?
08:42It's the grounding the TMO wants to have a look at.
08:45Well, if it's just the grounding, then the TMO must think it's OK, propulsion-wise.
08:50Yeah, stay with the off-field decision. It's a knock on the goal.
08:53It was the hands rather than the feet in the end that cost Sam Graham, who was that close.
09:00Close.
09:17Drop goal could be on. Bouncing kick.
09:20Smith.
09:22Graham.
09:24Brought down by Tommy Raphael.
09:30Yeah, I just thought it was a hell of an impact, that, from Tommy Raphael.
09:34And Sam Graham in a lot of pain.
09:39It'll be cleared up if there's anything wrong with it.
09:43Immediately you see that and you think it's a massive shoulder impact on his knee.
09:47You really, really hope. Well, I'm really hoping that's a horrible dead leg rather than the shot on the knee.
09:52The replay's not a pleasant one, so we're not going to show you it.
09:59So the tackle is illegal because he's already on his knees.
10:03Tommy, you're the man who made the tackle?
10:05It's seven Tigers, yes?
10:06Correct.
10:07OK, so he's on his knees and he hasn't made a tackle, so it's an illegal tackle.
10:10And it's a dangerous action, so it's going to be a yellow card.
10:13I have a question.
10:15Even though he rapped and he...
10:17So we understand it's a rap, but he needs to be on his feet to tackle.
10:21I understand the foul play.
10:23If you're on the floor and you make a tackle, completely fine.
10:26But he wasn't already on the floor.
10:28He went to the floor to make the tackle.
10:30That's not the same.
10:32First and foremost, let's hope Sam Graham isn't too badly injured.
10:36Doesn't look very good at the minute, but let's keep our fingers crossed for him.
10:39The injury was caused by foul play.
10:41Yeah.
10:43It's a foul play.
10:45It's a foul play.
10:47It's a foul play.
10:49It's a foul play.
10:51It's a foul play.
11:01Saints still banging away impressively, trying to find an equalising score.
11:05Ram somehow found its way to Tommy Freeman.
11:09Freeman skipping through!
11:18Extended contract this week.
11:20Saints knowing what he's all about in the years going forwards,
11:25but right now scoring more tries. Tommy Freeman.
11:29The build-up was fantastic, strong from Pollock.
11:32Players making late decisions, options at the line, pulling it out the back.
11:36James Ram in the right place, that's where it should have broken down.
11:39Then it becomes a one-on-one. It's brilliant from Freeman.
11:42It's a horror moment for Oli Hassel-Collins.
11:44That's a try that was finished excellently by an excellent finisher,
11:47but ultimately shouldn't have been scored.
11:49Will Tellers, it's a knock-on, isn't it?
11:53I think Furbank's right hand touches the ball.
11:57It's being checked, the pass from Ram and then that from Furbank.
12:02I think it's a knock-on, this angle's a good one.
12:06Yeah, it's forward from Northampton.
12:09It's a try that wasn't scored.
12:11Shouldn't have been and wasn't.
12:14Through the mark.
12:16Cracknell. Van Portley.
12:20Scott Young coming in, still Leicester ball.
12:23Liebenberg away very quickly.
12:27Made back by Cracknell, Chesson.
12:31Curtis Langdon throwing himself around enthusiastically.
12:35Stewart.
12:37He's hauled to the floor by Kemeny.
12:40Cracknell again.
12:42Leicester just making an extra step or two
12:45through each of these breakdowns.
12:48It's just that little bit of leg drive after contact,
12:51that little 18 inches or so,
12:54all that makes all the difference.
12:57But what it does is, if you're making ground consistently,
13:00the defence panics a little bit and they try things,
13:02they feel like they need to try something different,
13:04which is exactly what happened there,
13:06because straight up hitting you isn't enough.
13:08So you try and be extra disruptive in a different way
13:11and you risk giving away pens.
13:16A couple of little silly mistakes as well.
13:18Polakir kicking the ball through.
13:20You see his right foot come through.
13:22There's the penalty.
13:33Andre Pollard.
13:35Leicester 10, Northampton 0.
13:41It's a quality line-up, sponsored by Thatcher's Gold.
14:11I want to be in the red corner.
14:13He's running away from a move!
14:16Would you bet a single dollar
14:18that Matt Sellaway doesn't beat Teporia?
14:20Lillian Teporia puts people to sleep.
14:22Perfectly unbalanced.
14:25I really don't know who's going to take that title.
14:28You know my daughter, don't you?
14:30She's here because...
14:31Mum's away with her yoga teacher boyfriend.
14:33She thought I should visit my other dad.
14:35Other dad?
14:36You know what I mean.
14:37What's that?
14:38Looks like a Nationwide card.
14:39Yeah, I thought you'd know that, Dad.
14:40It's not me.
14:41It's proper sharing.
14:42Just feels good to bank somewhere that's owned by its members,
14:44rather than someone like you.
14:46Who told you that?
14:47Friends.
14:48And Mum's boyfriend.
14:49The yoga teacher.
14:51Missed me.
14:52Because we're owned by our members,
14:54we put members first.
14:56Nationwide.
14:57A good way to bank.
15:00Oh, this place is banging, Trev!
15:03What did you say, Connie?
15:05There's more to Argos.

15:39It's OK, lads. I'm with the AA.
15:42No wonder more people choose the AA.
16:09Hi.
16:28This is you on your first day as a teacher.
16:31Anybody?
16:32This is a class you'll inspire.
16:33Alien?
16:34No.
16:35Life.
16:36Really inspire.
16:37This is a lesson you'll learn from her,
16:39him,
16:41and them.
16:42Here's the day you're put to the test.
16:45Come on!
16:46And this is the day we bring it home!
16:49These are all the lives you'll shape.
16:54This is the one you'll shape the most.
16:56Search Get Into Teaching.
17:07Crouch!
17:08Come on, boys! Come on, Amy!
17:10Bind!
17:14Set!
17:16High!
17:17Set high!
17:18Squeeze!
17:21And Northampton, with McParland and Hutchinson,
17:25just frustratingly, one or two passes
17:28that have not gone to hand so far,
17:30and it's been a bit of a struggle.
17:33One or two passes that have not gone to hand so far,
17:37and that looked painful on Furbank.
17:47Again, Andrew Jack, the tier boat.
17:53Pollard comes in upright and it's just, I think,
17:56a bit of a jack-in-the-box job, wasn't it?
17:59Furbank's head sort of rifled up towards him a bit.
18:04I see that and think we can all move on with our lives, don't you?
18:08I think he'll end up with a yellow card for it, though,
18:11I agree with you, but...
18:16He's upright, isn't he?
18:18His knees are bent.
18:20But yes, he could be lower.
18:22Don't be too low, though, you get a yellow card for that.
18:25We've had two yellows already for Tommy Raphel and Curtis Langdon.
18:29Jacko, we've got head contact.
18:32We've got foul play.
18:34I'm not seeing this as a high degree of danger,
18:36so I think we can just stick with a penalty on there.
18:38Do you agree?
18:43I was thinking that it was not necessarily a high danger,
18:46but it's a pretty big danger.
18:48OK, so not a high degree of danger,
18:50so we're starting at a yellow card, but there's no mitigation,
18:53so it's just a yellow card.
18:55Andrew Jack.
18:57Oh, Andrew Jack.
18:59Gently nudging Anthony Woodthorpe towards a yellow card,
19:03and a hand of apology from Andre Pollard.
19:08Not a high degree of danger, no mitigation.
19:11Yes, he's got to be lower, and I'm...
19:15We're all advocates here,
19:17we're all advocates for bringing the tackle height down,
19:20and he's got to bend at the hips, not just at the knee,
19:23but it's that passive.
19:26I don't know.
19:28I guess it's letter of the law and all that,
19:30but that feels like the sort of yellow card
19:32that doesn't need to be awarded to me.
19:34Could be a five-minute yellow.
19:37Or just not a yellow.
19:39Curtis Langdon back on, first job to find Kemedy,
19:42and then...
19:44Not found Ram.
19:46But again, just little loose threads from Saints going forwards.
19:51They still, gratefully, have possession.
19:55Chunyamunga goes in to make sure
19:57that there's some heavyweight protection for it.
20:00Talking of heavyweights, Mania Yogan.
20:06Hutchinson.
20:08James Ram.
20:10George Hendy, by the way.
20:12Start to his season delayed by injury,
20:14but he was part of the warm-up crew before the match,
20:17so hopefully Hendy not far away from saying hello
20:19for the first time in this campaign.
20:21Smith, he's given that away,
20:23and Cracknell was in the right place.
20:26Returning as a starting eight today
20:28after missing the win up at Kingston Park.
20:31And drawing the penalty.
20:33Chisholm!
20:34Oh, the intensity.
20:39Woodward.
20:40That was nicely picked up by Hassell-Collins.
20:42It wasn't the pleasantest of passes.
20:46Liebenberg.
20:48Running into Munger's determined shoulders.
20:54Stewart.
20:56Hassell-Collins.
20:58Still playing the advantage, but for how much longer?
21:01Jack Van Portley.
21:02Two Saints defenders to beat.
21:04Comes back in field, looking for mates,
21:07and finds one in the presence of Woodward.
21:11Chesson, who started all this with a steamrolling run.
21:22Noise levels around this place rising.
21:24Liebenberg.
21:30Kelly.
21:33Running into a Northampton forest.
21:36Oh!
21:38Van Portley popped up for Smith.
21:40Nicky Smith.
21:43Leicester, eight, nine metres short of the target.
21:47Raphel.
21:53Oli Chesson, who's been central to this latest Leicester thrust.
21:59Stewart, trying to add a little bit of pace to it.
22:03Patient, accurate, Tiger stuff.
22:05Cracknell again.
22:09Raphel.
22:11Van Portley.
22:17Saints looking for the moment when they might be able to pounce on the ball.
22:20Chun-Yi Munger maybe, but it goes the other way.
22:24Cracknell waits.
22:25Wells waits.
22:27It was Cracknell.
22:28He'd taken half a step forward before he got the ball.
22:31And then wide it goes, and it's been dropped by Kelly.
22:38It's a great defensive set from Northampton, that, to hold the Tigers out.
22:42But it all started from that young man.
22:43Look at this out the back of the hands.
22:45Good change of direction.
22:46Stewart spots it.
22:47Just flicks it out the back of his hand.
22:50And then Hassell-Collins does really well to go inside, outside, keep it alive.
22:54You think, okay, foot race.
22:55Furbanks got the angle on him.
22:56Cuts back.
22:58They're starting to play a bit of rugby, Leicester.
23:00Tell you what, it was really good from Jack Van Portley, yes,
23:03but the recognition from Freddie Stewart.
23:05Make no mistake, of course he wants to win this game for his team,
23:08but this is personal.
23:09Freddie Stewart at the moment, dead keen to get involved,
23:12having a really, really good game.
23:14Crouch.
23:19Bind.
23:22Set.
23:24Set.
23:28Down they go again.
23:29White, white, white.
23:30On goes the shove.
23:32Leicester with another penalty.
23:34Problems mounting for Northampton.
23:36Van Portley, Stewart, looking for a second.
23:40Leicester looking for a second.
23:45Liebenberg held up, just short.
23:50Another penalty on the way.
23:53And the try scored.
23:57And it's Cracknell.
24:02The blood and the thunder of Leicester at close range.
24:13Brute force wins the day.
24:15That was an old-school Leicester Tigers try.
24:18Having a penalty five metres out and choosing the scrum
24:21reminds me of playing up here myself.
24:23Absolute confrontation.
24:25They got their drills just right.
24:27It was a hit-and-go, almost like the old days in the scrum.
24:29And from that moment, Northampton are on the back foot.
24:32And Freddie Stewart, yes, he's a full-back.
24:35He's also, as we said in the first half, 6'5", 17, 18 stone.
24:40So why not use him on the hoof?
24:42Why not use him to smash a hole into some defenders?
24:45Lots of momentum he carries into contact.
24:47Northampton just can't recover.
24:50Great work in the tight.
24:51Oli Cracknell, the Leicester pack, but Freddie Stewart in a very good game.
25:10Balls out the front.
25:12It's a tackle! Let it go!
25:14Balls available.
25:15Once more with Tom Pearson.
25:19Set to pick up, or maybe let it roll through to McParlan.
25:23No, it is Pearson who doesn't hold on to it long.
25:26Davison invited to give it a go.
25:28And then again, the search for the line!
25:30And Sainz muscles!
25:32This time on the line, surely!
25:35He scored that, Nick. That is great power.
25:50As I come round, I haven't got a grounding.
25:53Have you got a grounding?
25:54No, I've got it clearly down. I've got two arms underneath me.
25:56I've got it down. I'm 70 metres away.
25:58We've got time to check it, so we'll just check.
26:00Jacko, just check for a grounding, please.
26:02Jack make peace, the assistant referee.
26:04At the end, on-field decision, no try.
26:06Great, thanks.
26:07More work for Andrew Jack.
26:08So on-field decision, no try. We've got to see this on the floor.
26:11Wells tries to just roll him, get his body underneath,
26:14but he's got so much strength, I think he spins out.
26:18Gets to the ground.
26:21That's a try, isn't it?
26:22I don't know. Does Wells then get his hands underneath?
26:25Yeah, I think it is incredible power, that.
26:28But from that first angle...
26:32That's a try.
26:33He grounds it before the line.
26:34I don't know if he grounds it afterwards.
26:36Now it's up, but I think between there...
26:39I think there's skin and bone underneath that, Oz.
26:43How much closer are Northampton going to have to get before they get a try?
26:46This time it's Tom Pearson.
26:50This angle is held up, but the one before, I'm not so sure.
26:56That's not on the ground there, is it?
26:58Is it clear and obvious, and that's what it needs to be,
27:01because Anthony Woodthorpe isn't seeing a grounding.
27:04At the moment, it's no try, unless we have definitive evidence otherwise.
27:08Can't see him giving that. That is tight.
27:10I'm a Saints fan, I want to see the other angle.
27:14This one.
27:15Does he make the line now?
27:17I think you'd count that.
27:18On the first reach.
27:20Not now, but does he make it now when he pushes down?
27:23You're guessing though, aren't you?
27:25Because you can't see the ball, and that's the problem.
27:27He almost certainly does, but unless you see it...
27:29Different question, different outcome.
27:34It's going to be no try, isn't it?
27:35No try.
27:41Woody, stay with your foot decision.
27:46One of the Saints fans right now, south of the border,
27:49south of Market Harbour, slapping the cushions in frustration.
27:53Northampton might have had three tries by now,
27:56they've still got none.
27:57So tight, super, super tight.
28:00I don't know if a different question from the referee,
28:03gives a different result then.
28:05They didn't see a grounding, because I think there probably wasn't one,
28:08but it's so tight, great power from Bollock.
28:12Great work from Wells.
28:13Great work from Wells, yeah.
28:20Davison eager for work.
28:22Smith holds it up.
28:25Draws in Freeman.
28:26Just a bit speculative, isn't it?
28:28They're not quite steaming on to it.
28:29Leicester are getting off the line on the outside,
28:31shutting it down with relative ease at the moment.
28:36McParlan to West.
28:38Former Leicester man, had a season here.
28:43Tackle! Let it go!
28:50Tackle!
28:53And now driving of Pollock.
28:57Smith into Chesson, who rolls over the top.
29:01McParlan, Munger.
29:03No, no!
29:06He's hooking the ball, no more.
29:08Give it up.
29:09Wells warned.
29:11Oh, and it's intercepted, and away they go,
29:13and away goes Woodward.
29:14Who'll chase him?
29:15Who'll catch him?
29:16Got some work to do.
29:18Oh, Hassell-Collins was clear on his own on the left-hand side.
29:21Oh, that might be a yellow.
29:24Yeah.
29:26Here it comes, and how quickly things change.
29:30From one end to the other.
29:35And Tom Pearson, millimetres away from scoring.
29:39A second or so ago, now yellow card.
29:42How good is the read from Woodward?
29:45So good.
29:47Absolutely brilliant, this is.
29:50Because, look, he just keeps running.
29:52Just keeps going.
29:53That is a really good read of the pass.
29:56I thought he was going to get there himself,
29:58if he hadn't swayed wrong, gets across.
30:01There was a pass on to his left,
30:03but it's almost too much to expect, really.
30:05Yeah, it's difficult.
30:06James Rand does brilliantly there.
30:08He steams back at 100%.
30:12Pearson's thinking he's getting away with that,
30:14because he's hidden his right arm underneath.
30:16Hard to see.
30:18Third yellow card, second for Saints.
30:20They're without Pearson,
30:22one of their big, big enforcers at times like this.
30:26They've got to try and out-muscle Leicester here,
30:29keep them out.
30:30A man down, and a big man down.
30:33Dan Cole, sensing glory.
30:37He's got it now, he's got a lot of work to do on his own.
30:40He's up to the line, just short.
30:43He's being turtled by Northampton's defence.
30:49Cracknell waits.
30:51Doesn't get that far.
31:03Harry Wells, not quite.
31:05Now Leicester are.
31:07It's Chesson.
31:10And increasingly you are thinking,
31:12on this East Midlands evening,
31:14that it is Leicester.
31:23And just as Northampton lose
31:25a fresh-leg top player,
31:28Tom Pearson to the sim bin,
31:30one of Leicester's big guns steps up.
31:33There have been a couple of instances in this game
31:35where Ollie Chesson, the big second row,
31:37the try-scorer here,
31:38just looks a level above most other players on the field
31:42in terms of directness and power.
31:44Just a simplicity to what he does.
31:46Very, very hard to stop.
31:48Great engine, lovely body shapes for a man that big.
31:52In the end, there's nothing they're doing about that.
31:54They run out of numbers.
31:56They've written volumes on Leicester sides of old,
31:59scoring tries from five metres out,
32:01and Ollie Cracknell and Ollie Chesson,
32:03and to a degree Freddie Stewart,
32:05right at the start of the match,
32:06have scored tries just from that range in this contest so far.
32:17Into the final quarter, Leicester 24, Northampton 3.
32:21He does two jobs as well, Chesson, in this one, doesn't he?
32:24He actually clears the ruck out himself.
32:28Clears the ruck out, little clear out there,
32:30bounces back out, and over he goes.
32:50This close to their first try
32:52in the 70th minute of the East Midlands derby.
32:54Maybe now Pollock driving for the line,
32:56if anyone deserves one, he does.
32:58No, he lost it.
33:00It's a brilliant tackle.
33:04I tell you what, again, I repeat myself,
33:06he's not a giant guy,
33:07but you've really got to hit this kid.
33:10He drops the ball on in contact there,
33:12knocks the ball on,
33:13but you've really got to stick on him, hit him hard.
33:18There's an awful lot of momentum he carries in.
33:22It's Joseph Woodward who made the tackle.
33:24Yeah, got himself in a decent position,
33:26got rocked in the tackle, but it's a clear knock-on.
33:29He got bumped, didn't he?
33:30But he did enough to displace the ball,
33:33which is all that counts.
33:45Northampton are giving a debut to Gavin Thornberry.
33:49He's just taken the place of Miano Vanua in the second row.
33:52Thornberry, former Connock man,
33:54brought in on a short-term contract
33:57at the same time as Will Spencer to beef up the squad.
34:00We'll see Spencer as the season wears on
34:03and it's started to rain.
34:07Tigers folks have their phone torches on.
34:14Free kick.
34:16It's going to have to be a tap and go,
34:17and Pollock will happily do that to try to right the wrongs.
34:20He's taken them to within touching distance of the try line.
34:24Off goes Saints, this time well over the line.
34:29Oh, and again held up.
34:31You're getting the impression that we could play
34:33until next Thursday in Northampton.
34:35Dan Cole does really well here.
34:37He concedes the tackle straight away from the side.
34:40He doesn't try and hit it.
34:41Just watch what he does with his right hand.
34:44It was Tom West who took it in, Oz,
34:46as we have a look at this.
34:48Yeah, Cole actually could try and hit him,
34:50he could try and win the tackle, but he doesn't.
34:53He's good at that, Coley.
34:56He's good at that, he does that a lot.
34:59It's actually about a big, massively strong man
35:02actually being passive for a second for the greater gain.
35:07There you go.
35:08You can't quite see from that angle,
35:10but he just gets his right arm underneath the ball and spins.
35:17Set!
35:21Go away.
35:29Pollard.
35:33James Rammert, full-back.
35:39Clipped over the top and Hutchinson,
35:41and here is the new man Garcide.
35:43Oh, he's got some pace.
35:45Legs, fresh lungs, and up to within four metres of the try line.
35:50Oh, and then the ball was knocked on.
35:56It's not your day, lads, it's not your day.
35:58Hutchinson does so nicely down the left.
36:02He's just a beautiful rugby player to watch, isn't he?
36:04Puts Garcide away.
36:07There's so much space out there to the left,
36:09you've still got to do something with it.
36:11Hutchinson just glides.
36:13It's the 10th time that Northampton have been in Leicester's 22
36:18without scoring a try.
36:21Before this game, only Newcastle had made fewer attacking excursions
36:26into the red zone, as we call it.
36:28Saints up to that point, Flats,
36:30have been the poorest at turning them into points,
36:32and they've only added to that today.
36:34They've only added to it.
36:35The cutting edge isn't quite there,
36:36exactly what we're used to seeing.
36:38Freddie Stewart actually had a key intervention,
36:40and a tackle was made,
36:41but he piled in and made an absolute mess of it.
36:46Once again, it is Kemeny, once again.
36:48Saints pressing, and Smith, and away to slight home.
37:01McParland, here they go with Pearson again.
37:05Still just short, but surely now McParland
37:09still not yet.
37:12Jake Garside on this far right-hand side.
37:15Northampton keeping it tight.
37:18Smith calling for it, looking for Garside too much.
37:25It has been one of those East Midlands derbies for Northampton.
37:29Horrible day for Saints, it has to be said.
37:33If that's Tommy Freeman out there, they score,
37:35because he's six foot four.
37:39Three-man.
37:41There's that.
37:42Oh, that's an interesting line-out,
37:43and it created some problems,
37:45and it's picked up by Pollock,
37:47and Saints might be given the try.
37:52Munger drives in, surely has to score.
37:55He's held up again.
37:56Would he, Leicester, offside if that's held up?
37:58Yeah, OK.
37:59Held up, going for an offside penalty.
38:02Number eight.
38:04The 78th minute, and Saints calling for Cambridge.
38:11Whatever that is, we're about to find out.
38:13Good night's out.
38:14Yeah.
38:15Is it?
38:16Yeah, only an hour from here.
38:17A special move on the cards, let's see.
38:25It's on West, hands on his knees,
38:27but it's left for Pollock,
38:28and it is West who drives it on.
38:34McParland.
38:3678th minute.
38:38Northampton still hunting the first try.
38:40Consolation territory.
38:42That's been lost.
38:44This time by Freeman,
38:45and Leicester will have the scrum at the very least.
38:50Stewart with the tackle again, wasn't it?
38:52Steaming off the line.
38:53Game's won, 21 points up with a couple of minutes to go.
38:57Leicester Tigers and Freddie Stewart steaming off the line,
39:00colliding hard.
39:03That might be a penalty.
39:04Trevor Davison warming himself up.
39:08I think he thought the ball was out.
39:11It wasn't.
39:12He just wants to be friends.
39:15And offside.
39:31The noise and the lights of Welford Road
39:34as Saints go a-searching once more.
39:36Is this the moment?
39:37Maybe.
39:39Freeman up to the line.
39:42Finally!
39:43In the 81st minute,
39:46Saints score the try.
39:48And that'll hurt Leicester.
39:50They'll have been looking to keep them out,
39:52but eventually,
39:54the score that Saints have been threatening for so long.
39:57It'll take a little bit of the icing off, won't it?
39:59But lovely play.
40:00Wrap around.
40:01Great angle.
40:02Takes the ball from behind him.
40:03He's got so much power, Freeman.
40:05And a wonderful angle.
40:07Does he get there?
40:08Oh, he's lost it.
40:10It's been punched out.
40:11Does he get it back?
40:12No, no, no.
40:13Oh!
40:16That has to be a try.
40:17Yeah.
40:41Does he keep hold of the ball, though?
40:44Does he ever lose contact with his left arm?
40:47Well, there's separation, isn't there?
40:54Oh, well, if this one is ruled out,
40:56there'll be thousands and thousands of Saints fans
40:58switching across their homes under the hammer.
41:01And wishing that they'd never wasted two hours watching this.
41:04Ah, the try scored.
41:06Of course it was.
41:07You can stick with us, folks.
41:08Of course it was.
41:11Separation.
41:12Come on.
41:14I'm just turning back to the several hours of abuse
41:16I get on social media after every East Midlands derby.
41:19The Neanderthals have had a few shambles on their couches.
41:26I've got a few fake accounts I'll pepper you with.
41:29The journey home.
41:30Look forward to it.
41:35Well done, Saints.
41:36Nicely executed, that.
41:37Tommy Freeman, tonnes of power.
41:38Nearly didn't work.
41:39Pass wasn't perfect.
41:40In the end, a great play.
41:45Finn Smith's conversion goes wide.
41:48And a look on his face that will sum up the faces
41:52of most Northampton folk in these parts.
41:57But Leicester, very impressive.
42:00Sleeves rolled up, showing their muscles.
42:03It felt like Leicester of old.
42:06And they have won this latest chapter of the East Midlands Ding Dong
42:11by 24 points to eight.
42:16So congratulations to the Tigers.
42:18The bragging rights stay here in Leicester.
42:21They've taken the East Midlands derby with a victory
42:24by 24 points to eight.
42:27Goodbye.
