The Met Office have named Storms Dudley and Eunice, with impacts from severe weather expected on Wednesday night and Friday. Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern has this update.

00:00A severe week of weather ahead, so much so that the Met Office have named two storms
00:05– Dudley and Eunice – as well as issued an amber warning for Wednesday night into
00:11the start of Thursday.
00:13Storm Dudley comes along first of all and will be picked up by a very powerful jet stream
00:18coming at 200mph out of Newfoundland and that storm is going to deepen during Tuesday as
00:25it crosses the Atlantic, reaching northern parts of the UK on Wednesday night. That's
00:30when the strongest of the winds occur and the worst of the winds are likely to affect
00:35central and southern Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland as well as northern England. Quickly
00:40that moves out of the way during Thursday. Meanwhile, something that doesn't even form
00:44until Thursday itself, Storm Eunice deepens very rapidly as it approaches and as it crosses
00:51southern half of the UK and this one is likely to bring the strongest of the winds to southern
00:56parts of England and Wales with the risk of disruptive snow occurring on its northern
01:02flank.
01:03So let's put a bit more detail on these storms. Storm Dudley at first comes along later Wednesday
01:09and in fact the winds really pick up later in the afternoon and into the start of the
01:13evening for the northern half of the UK. Widespread gales, north Wales, north woods and those
01:18winds reaching 70mph as far as the gusts are concerned in the yellow warning area and
01:25within that area an amber warning has been issued. Central and southern Scotland, parts
01:30of Northern Ireland and northern England where there's the risk in some places, even inland,
01:34of 80mph wind gusts and for some of the most exposed coasts and hills 90mph wind gusts.
01:42Disruptions to travel, dangerous conditions around coasts and even structural damage possible
01:47with these kinds of wind speeds. That's why an amber warning has been issued, that's why
01:50Storm Dudley has been named.
01:53Then during Thursday, out of nowhere, Storm Eunice forms and really deepens very quickly
01:59as it approaches the UK. When these storms deepen as they cross the UK there is some
02:04uncertainty and we're still four or five days ahead so there's some uncertainty about the
02:07track and depth of Eunice but it does look likely to bring another period of stormy weather,
02:12this time focused across southern parts of the UK and so at the moment a yellow warning
02:18is in force and it looks likely that Storm Eunice is going to bring widely gales for
02:24the southern half of the UK, particularly around southwestern and southern coasts and
02:29within this warning area we can expect 70mph wind gusts with the risk, even inland, there's
02:36this possibility of 80mph wind gusts. Not only that but for the northern half of the
02:43warning area there's the risk of significant and disruptive snowfall, even blizzard conditions,
02:49for some parts of north Wales, northern England, southern Scotland.
02:53And so yeah, lots going on with the weather this week. Warnings are in force, they'll
