00:00The 2024 Gran Piemonte, 182km from Valdengo to a finish in Borgo Manero with a series
00:15of climbs towards the end in the final third of the race that could prevent the sprinters
00:20teams from bringing it back.
00:22Matej Mohric as well as Roman Bardet, Filippo Ganna, Rui Costa, a star studded field for
00:29Gran Piemonte with its usual unpredictable outcome.
00:33A kilometre zero when the flag dropped, there were some early attacks and it took a little
00:38while before the definitive breakaway of the day established itself, four riders getting
00:43up the road and growing an advantage that at one point was over six minutes.
00:48But as the first major climb of the day approached, DSM got on the front and started to apply
00:54pressure, eating into the time gap, meaning that Nick Zakowski and Francisco Munoz were
01:00the only two riders surviving initially from the original breakaway.
01:03Then Frank van den Broeck attacked for DSM as certain riders then started to get dropped
01:08in the peloton behind and the pressure continued.
01:11Giulio Ciccone of Lidl Trek then, the latest rider to launch an offensive over the Passo
01:17della Colma.
01:18Caden Groves, the pre-race favourite, the fastest man in theory, off the back and distanced
01:24over the top of the climb as news came through that Filippo Ganna had to abandon the race.
01:29A wet descent then as Nick Zakowski waited for Francisco Munoz but with a diminished
01:34advantage.
01:35Matej Mohoric taking advantage of his descending skills to take with him Giulio Ciccone and
01:40Nilsson Paulus.
01:42By now the time gap was down to just 29 seconds to three riders at the front of the race.
01:47Matej Mohoric then needed a front wheel change and that put him out of the back of the chase
01:51group and with 40km to go on the climb of Cremosina, Nilsson Paulus launched an audacious
01:58long range offensive and straight away the chase group were in tactical difficulties
02:04looking at one another to see which of the teams would take up the responsibility of
02:08chasing down the American.
02:11In the end then two chase groups came together and that restored a bit more firepower to
02:16the chase group behind.
02:17Caden Groves still off the back of the race in a peloton, a couple of minutes down on
02:22Nilsson Paulus, the solo leader.
02:24The last climb of any difficulty was the Travasagna climb and Paulus only had a 16 second advantage
02:32over another chase group on the road that included Corbin Strong, the fastest man in
02:36the second group on the road from Israel Premier Tech.
02:39The New Zealander had the full support of Israel Premier Tech, Lidl Trek as well trying
02:43to bring this back and nullify the advantage of Nilsson Paulus.
02:47He took the bell and out onto the 11km circuit in and around Borgo Manero with an advantage
02:52of around 30 seconds.
02:54That got whittled down then by Alessandro Covi from UEE Team Emirates but the counterattacks
03:00were brought back, the race behind got more and more confusing and Nilsson Paulus still
03:06with an advantage but a shrinking advantage with 7km to go of just 13 seconds.
03:11Then Alex Adam Buru, the Spanish national champion from Movistar tried to get clear
03:16but he too was caught and in the final couple of kilometres Nilsson Paulus still had those
03:20precious 15 seconds or so.
03:22What can they do to bring this man back?
03:24Eduardo Zambonini I think is the rider from Bahrain Victorious who's going to be having
03:28a go at this sprint.
03:29He's still there, Uno X is still there, Tobias Johannesson though has lost his lead out man,
03:33Moric on the wheel, 250m to go for Nilsson Paulus.
03:36He looks round and surely victory is the Americans.
03:40A first win of 2024 for Paulus, he's within his reach now.
03:46One more check back and now he can smile.
03:49What a win from Paulus, class performance and a fabulous victory for the American.
04:02Yes!
04:05That's so nice.
04:06Yeah!
04:10So Corbin Strong and Alex Adam Buru relegated to second and third in the sprint behind.
04:15Victory going to Nilsson Paulus of EF Education Easypost.
