First of three debates between party leaders in Brisbane tonight

Steven Miles and David Crisafulli will go head-to-head in the first debate of the Queensland election campaign tonight.

00:00Well, tonight is such an important night in the Queensland election campaign calendar.

00:08Both leaders, Stephen Miles and David Crisafulli, will be trying to convince Queenslanders why

00:12they should vote for their government and for them to take power after the October state

00:18elections.

00:19It's likely Stephen Miles will be questioned about his latest cost of living measure announcement,

00:24which he revealed just this morning.

00:26He said that if Labor takes power this October, he will create an energy price guarantee which

00:33will see Queensland household electricity bills remain lower than the mainland average.

00:38They're waiting for more detail of how this guarantee will work, but of course this comes

00:43after yesterday's announcement that his government would create a new publicly owned energy retailer

00:49to compete with the private sector and another state-owned company.

00:53This announcement has been met with criticism.

00:56The LNP labelled it wild, weird and desperate.

01:00Some experts have also questioned how the plan would work, given that in regional Queensland,

01:04where locals rely on the current state-owned provider, electricity prices are capped.

01:10But this is just one element of the Labor government's cost of living commitments.

01:14We've seen the party commit to a raft of measures to combat rising prices across Queensland

01:20if they're elected, including 50 cent public transport fares, doubling the first homeowner's

01:26grant and also making state-owned petrol stations across Queensland.

01:32There's no doubt that Stephen Miles will try to reiterate these policies tonight when he

01:36takes to the debate stage.

01:39And the LNP leader, David Chrisofulli, will also likely hit his key points, key election

01:45issues in the debate tonight as well.

01:47That is ambulance ramping, cost of living, but mainly youth crime.

01:52Youth crime has really formed up to be a key LNP election issue.

01:56The LNP has already made some announcements in relation to youth crime, including their

02:01policy of adult crime, adult time, which would see youth offenders sentenced at the same

02:07rates as adult offenders for serious crimes, including murder.

02:13They've also announced $40 million to create two new schools for high-risk youth offenders

02:19as well.

02:20With 24 days left until the state election, there's no doubt there'll be more policies,

02:25more commitments announced over the coming weeks.
