00:00Since the last week of May when the first tropical storm Agon hit the Philippines,
00:04a string of some nine to a dozen storms and typhoons have followed in her wake,
00:08to include Butchoy and the more devastating ones, Carina, Enteng and Ferdi.
00:13All told, the damage of all these typhoons from Agon to Julian
00:17have laid waste to some 420,000 tons of spoiled rice.
00:21Oddly enough, this volume falls well within the DA's projected annual loss
00:25of 600,000 metric tons, leaving the country still sufficient in its supply
00:30and no reason at all to raise prices, as our Claisel Pardilia reports.
00:37Rice fields in Sikalao, Lasam, Cagayan have been severely impacted by Typhoon Julian.
00:43Mark Alamay's post highlights the damage to the rice fields,
00:46with some areas of the farmland also experiencing flooding.
00:50According to the Department of Agriculture Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office,
00:55approximately 52,000 hectares of rice fields may be affected by Typhoon Julian
01:00in the provinces of Batanes and Cagayan.
01:03The Agriculture Department has assured the public the country's rice supply
01:07remains adequate and there is no justification for price increases.
01:26The DA anticipates an increase in treatable rice in the global markets.
01:33India has lifted its export ban on non-basbati rice,
01:37including indica, which is commonly imported by the Philippines.
01:40The Agriculture Department has reported a positive outlook on this development.
02:25There are areas that report 14-15 pesos per kilo, that's fresh.
02:32So that will be about 18-19 pesos clean and dry, compared to 25-27 pesos last season.
02:55Approximately 420,000 metric tons of rice have gone ruined due to El Nino and several typhoons.
03:10This figure remains within the annual agricultural loss estimate of up to 600,000 metric tons.
03:16The DA has pre-possession assistance at its regional offices,
03:20ready to be deployed to help farmers swiftly recover from the impacts of typhoons.
