00:21Mexican government declares orange alert in some municipalities of the country due to
00:25tropical storm Yon.
00:30An Israeli army launched seven airstrikes in less than an hour on the southern suburbs
00:35of Beirut in Lebanon as the Zionist regime intensified its assault on the country.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with news.
01:07Heads of state and government representatives continue to take the floor Thursday on the
01:11fourth day of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
01:16Our special envoy to New York, Jorge Gestosa, with the details.
01:23The end of the fourth day of the General Debate here at the United Nations.
01:29Very important day.
01:32At the morning we are witnessing the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, arriving
01:39to the podium.
01:40And at that very moment, a large amount of delegations standed up and left the assembly.
01:48A clear sign of rejection of what his policies, what is called the genocide, has been created
01:56because since the very first day of this General Assembly, all the international community
02:03has been condemning repeatedly what is called the assassination, the genocide, the killing
02:10of thousands, tens of thousands of Palestinians because of the Israeli forces since October
02:17the 7th.
02:19In the morning also, there was a meeting of the friends that defend what is called the
02:27Charter, in defense of the Charter of the United Nations.
02:33That meeting was the sixth annual meeting, took place here in New York City.
02:38Eighteen states were participating and was presided by the foreign minister of, talking
02:47about Venezuela, we're talking about Ivan Hill, who emphasizes that the genocide, precisely,
02:55that is taking place in Gaza is a clear sign of the weakness of the United Nations in order
03:03to impede that to happen, to stop it.
03:06He says that is a clear sign that the United Nations is not working, that they're from
03:11the global north.
03:13There's no interest to participate in efforts to create multilateralism, if not the idea
03:21precisely of Gaza and those attacks is a clear sign that they want to keep the unilateralism.
03:30At the afternoon, pretty interesting participation of the prime minister of St. Vincent and the
03:37Grenadines, we're talking about Ralph Gonsalves, who has said, quote, unfortunately, in our
03:46Latin American region, the ghost, the imperial ghost of Monroe is still alive and kicking.
03:54He also denounced the lack of commitment of the international community to help the islands
04:01of the Caribbean against all the climate change and all the devastation that are creating
04:08in that region.
04:09Tomorrow, a very important last day, if you want, of the key players, because China and
04:18Russia are going to be speaking and from our Latin America, Mexico and Cuba also are going
04:24to be present in what is going to be the fifth day of the general debate here at the United Nations.
04:33We get back to you now.
04:36On Friday, as the fourth day of session of the United Nations General Assembly is underway
04:40at the organization's headquarters in New York, leaders of the world address the challenges
04:45faced by their countries.
04:46In this context, during her speech, the prime minister of Barbados, Mia Motley, insisted
04:51they instead the international community to pause and reset to collectively deliver new
04:57opportunities of solutions to current world crisis.
05:03These structures that perpetuate and reflect an old world order, characterized by racism
05:10and classism and misogyny, while ignoring the legitimate aspirations of billions, will
05:17not help to foster the hope or trust that is necessary to meet these poly crises.
05:23We must ensure that the global institutions give developing countries, especially small
05:27vulnerable states like my own, or vulnerable middle income countries, seats at the table
05:32of decision making where we can be seen, heard, become active agents in our own cause
05:38and lead our own development paradigms.
05:42In addition, during her speech, Prime Minister Motley warned about the escalation of violence
05:46in Latin America and the Caribbean, aggravated by the supply of US-made assault weapons to
05:50criminal groups in the region.
05:55My own region has not escaped the scourge of instability and violence.
05:59The Americas do not constitute today a theater of war.
06:03But we are today witnessing, for some years now, an unprecedented escalation in the number
06:10and caliber of assault weapons which are finding themselves in the hands of criminals who are
06:15wreaking havoc on the legal systems and our societies, particularly in the small island
06:20developing states of the Caribbean, and indeed in the wider states of Central and Latin America.
06:26This scourge, caused by guns manufactured in the United States of America primarily,
06:31also requires a fundamental reset.
06:34The right of persons to bear arms in countries not engaged in military conflict should not
06:40be an opening to accept as legitimate the presence of assault weapons in countries.
06:47Furthermore, Motley urged the US government to lift the blockade imposed on Cuba and remove
06:54the country from the state sponsors of terrorism list.
06:58When we must ask for reprieve for the people of Cuba, it is unacceptable, it is unconscionable,
07:07and that it continues today is a mark on our international conscience.
07:13The Cuban people continue to face the most dire of economic circumstances, and that this
07:19is directly as a result of its exclusion and its designation as a state sponsor of
07:26terrorism.
07:27And I have addressed our only knowledge of terrorism, and Cuba is in fact the dungeon
07:33of the Cubana Plain off the waters of Barbados, where Cubans, Guyanese, and Koreans were killed.
07:40My friends, Cuba has been a valuable partner stepping up for us when it has mattered most
07:47by the provision of nurses and doctors in pandemics and by the provision of other essential
07:52workers when the global community needed it and when people needed to be liberated in
07:58Southern Africa.
08:00The reality is that we must have and continue to have resolve in calling for the embargo
08:08to be lifted, and we will condemn it year after year after year because it is simply
08:13wrong.
08:15Let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUSURI English

08:56half of the resources requested by the National University Council.
09:01These mobilizations are added to those of other sectors demanding better working conditions
09:06and denouncing massive layoffs in the public administration sector.
09:10In Argentina, the policies implemented by the government of Javier Millet led to a historical
09:19increase in poverty, which reached almost 53% of the population in the first semester
09:24of 2024.
09:26The National Institute of Statistics and Census published this September 26th its report on
09:32the incidence of poverty and indigence in the country.
09:35According to the data released by the agency, the adjustment policies of the national executive
09:39generated more than 5 million additional poor people, for a total of 25 million people.
09:45Meanwhile, the indigence index, understood as the poor whose income is not even enough
09:51to buy the minimum amount of food needed for subsistence, reached around 18% and affects
09:578.5 million people.
09:59We got into this situation after the first adjustments were made and we could no longer
10:14solve our economic problems.
10:18On top of that, I lost my job and everything became much more difficult.
10:23So unfortunately, we have to go to community kitchens in order to survive.
10:29Former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, called off nationwide rallies and roadblocks
10:34that were to begin on September 30th.

10:42to advance in preparing an event for next October 12th.
10:45In statements to Radio Panamericana de Bolivia, the former head of state explained that as
10:50they didn't want to affect the population, they made such a decision.
10:55Meanwhile, contacts are progressing with the ombudsman to set the basis for a dialogue
11:00with the government of President Luis Arce.
11:08In Bolivia, former prosecutor César Siles, who was appointed as the new Minister of Justice
11:13and Institutional Transparency on the night of September 26th, during a ceremony held
11:18at the presidential residence, Luis Arce appointed the new minister to take the place of Iván
11:25Lima, who resigned his functions irrevocably.
11:28César Siles, who held the position of attorney general for one year, has a master's degree
11:33in constitutional law and judicial public management, as well as degrees in public management
11:37and higher education.
11:39He has also held positions in national and international institutions, was a judge of
11:44the Administrative Court of the Latin American Integration Association, and served as a magistrate
11:49of the Court of Justice during the year 2010.
12:19Welcome back to From the South.

12:35tropical storm Yon.
12:37According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the storm has left five people dead
12:41so far along the coast of the state of Guerrero amid floods and landslides.
12:45The president prized the emergency teams, which are still working in the rescue of people
12:50trapped in Acapulco.
12:51On the other hand, temporary shelters are being set up to house over 97,000 victims,
12:57who also need food, water, medicine and mattresses.
13:06After losing intensity on Friday, Tropical Storm Helene races northward in the United
13:11States, moving through Georgia.
13:13The storm made landfall in the state of Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, bringing
13:18about strong winds and heavy rain that left around four million homes and businesses in
13:23the impacted regions reportedly without power.
13:26In this context, at least 20 people were killed in the United States.
13:30Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced 11 deaths in his state, while seven of the reported

13:40The damaging gusts will continue over portions of Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Kentucky.
13:53The Israeli army launched new attacks on Friday on the southern suburb of Beirut, the Lebanese
13:58capital, as the Zionist regime intensified its assaults on the country.
14:02According to a preliminary statement by the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least six
14:07people have been killed, while 91 have been reported injured in the attack, targeted on
14:13the residential area of Haaretz-Reich.
14:15The governmental body also informed that the Israeli army used bunker busters and brought
14:21down at least six buildings and caused extensive damage to the area.
14:25In less than one hour, the Israeli forces have reportedly launched seven airstrikes
14:29in the southern suburbs in Lebanon, leaving at least 700 people dead.
14:34Friday's attacks came shortly after Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed
14:39the United Nations, promising Israel's campaign in Lebanon would continue.
14:50On Friday, volunteers are committed to assist displaced persons with provisions including
14:54food at a soup kitchen in Beirut, Lebanon.
14:57Since Monday, the Israeli-occupying army has intensified their shellings across Lebanon,
15:02leading to over 600 deaths so far.
15:05As a result, around 40,000 people have been displaced and found shelters to save their
15:10lives.
15:11Thus, on the reception centers, volunteers not only cooked food without any sponsorship,
15:16but also they donated some further provisions and distributed all of it as an emergency
15:22response to help the people in need.
15:24Some of them shared their experiences with us.
15:32We sent mattresses, cushions, and covers to the people in Tyre, and whenever we receive
15:59donations of covers, cushions, and blankets, we immediately distribute them to the colder,
16:05more remote areas.
16:07Israel is accused of withholding the salaries and other contractual benefits of more than
16:11200,000 Palestinian workers.

16:23The accusation urges the government in Tel Aviv to remedy a series of abuses, such as
16:27unpaid wages and the illegal withholding of social benefits from more than 200,000
16:33Palestinian workers in Israeli territory, resulting in the loss of millions of dollars
16:38in income, financial insecurity, and the deprivation of basic services for employees and their
16:47families.
16:48Meanwhile, the World Bank warned that Palestine will register a freefall in its economy as
16:55part of the humanitarian crisis that the Gaza Strip is going through.

18:09The marches were held in support and victory for the sons of the Palestinian and Lebanese
18:13people in the confrontation against the Zionist regime and condemnation of the crimes committed
18:19by Israel against the two peoples.
18:21During the day, the demonstrators affirmed that the Yemeni people will continue to help
18:25the Palestinians and Lebanese until the Israeli aggression is stopped and the siege against
18:30their territories is lifted.
