00:00course it is always good to have on Coast to Coast our man Charlie Hulme from the Smiley Show which
00:05you see here on SportsGrid and Charlie of course is with us today courtesy of Ed so it's great to
00:10have Charlie here. Charlie good to see you as always my man and to have you while this is going
00:16on because there's a lot of things happening here and it and this really changes when I got up this
00:22morning I started thinking about all right five nothing is gonna be a blowout you know we're
00:26gonna get all over we're for not playing Tom Kim today we're gonna get all over Charlie forget it
00:32when I can say anything bad about weird because here comes the international team they're uh they
00:36are fighting back you could say this is so improbable Mike because if you look coming into
00:42this competition if you're looking at the three different formats that are played the four ball
00:47format which you know many know is just better ball best ball when you play that at home
00:51foursomes format which is alt shot which is what they're playing today in singles historically the
00:57internationals actually had it had a two point edge in the four ball format that we saw played
01:02yesterday the u.s swept 5-0 in the foursomes format the u.s had a 37 point edge they'd won
01:0989 and a half points the internationals 52 and a half lifetime and so to see it happen this way
01:16where Mike Weir elects to play the four ball format first thinking that's going to lead to
01:21an advantage getting blanked on day one and have the internationals come out the way they've done
01:26in alt shot and they have a chance to go 5-0 in this session I mean I'm looking at
01:30Xander Shoffley and Patrick Cantlay who have been one of the stalwart u.s pairings for years are
01:36seven down through 11 holes right now they're about to shut this thing down the 12th hole
01:40it's crazy finished finished charlie it's over yeah that one's completely done and like you said
01:46that's supposed to be their top thing like that was like a little bit of talk yesterday morning
01:50right oh why why they break up cantlay and shoffley those guys play so well together they
01:55played pretty good opposite away from each other yesterday and then you put them back together for
02:00the alternate shot I had a feeling though Charlie listen internationally they weren't going to come
02:04out and roll over in this now I didn't think this would be going on I thought there was a couple
02:09groups today that could get a few points back for them with Matsuyama and him being one of them and
02:14I thought you know finally putting maybe a couple Canadians together with Corey Connors and Mac Hughes
02:20that might also especially against what maybe would be perceived as one of the weaker U.S.
02:25groups just because of how max home was played recently uh but I definitely didn't see this so
02:30uh this these odds have changed too Charlie I think last night when we left and it was 5-0
02:36I saw USA at minus 1800 to win the President's Cup basically a done deal live right now as we
02:44speak minus 320 which is I think Charlie right about back to where it was pre-tournament so
02:50uh we're on here baby we might have ourselves a weekend we we really might and I think it's
02:55the thing to me that's interesting about this competition is heading into it the storyline was
03:02if the internationals don't win this thing or make this competitive we have to look at a total
03:05format overhaul we have to look at you know changing uh maybe making it a mixed competition
03:11a lot of people talked about in past years getting the women involved we need to maybe
03:14talk about changing the number of matches per session to mirror like what the Ryder Cup does
03:19instead of doing a four-day competition with five matches on day one and two kind of shrinking it
03:24to a three-day um just a lot of chatter in that sort of direction then of course you open up
03:29with a 5-0 U.S. lead and wonder okay what like you know coming out of this we're gonna have to fix
03:35this thing we can't keep doing it this way and I think that psychologically that has to have some
03:42sort of impact on both locker rooms like for the U.S. it's you expect to win you go out you win in
03:47this fashion the first session and you're kind of thinking all right you know the Ryder Cup is the
03:52one we care about more it's the more difficult the two competitions we can kind of sleepwalk
03:56through the rest of this thing get it done and we're gonna be fine now you've got a real competition
04:00going I mean I know we saw a little bit of fireworks yesterday between Scottie Scheffler
04:04and Tom Kim and that was hopefully going to get things going a little bit and it didn't happen in
04:09that four balls or the yeah the four ball session yesterday but now it's just pure old competition
04:13it's like you don't need me those fireworks because you're getting your butt whooped
04:16and you've got to come out and get this thing right because you know a loss is going to be
04:19tough for them uh yeah absolutely lost to be tough especially when you come out five nothing on the
04:25first day if they were able to ever able to yak this up that would be miserable uh so let's say
04:30that this doesn't go well for them here sorry let's say this ends you know let's say I think
04:34Scott I still think Scottie and Russell Henley are gonna find a way to at least get the United States
04:38some points whether that's I think a full point but even just a half point I think they're gonna
04:43get him something today let's say six four going into tomorrow uh and tomorrow of course is more
04:50traditional like we see in the Ryder Cup it splits the day morning in the afternoon you're gonna get
04:54four uh of the foursomes four of the four balls going back and forth does uh does Furek now have
05:01to kind of go back to what the good sauce was yesterday which is splitting up can't lay in the
05:07x-man kind of get you know I don't think you touched this Scheffler-Henley pairing which
05:11seems to be going pretty good the last two days but he's gotta get Keegan back in there who brought
05:15a lot of fire yesterday split up can't lay an x-man kind of got to go back to the stuff that
05:20worked on Thursday very strange some of these moves that Furek made and you can't completely
05:28fault him because you have a 5-0 lead now you can kind of you know play around a little bit and try
05:32some new combinations and so I think that I don't think he was expecting to lose you know close to
05:37you know 4-0 or 4-1 or you know whatever it is an all-shot this was not on his bingo card so I'd
05:42say that I do like what he's done with some of these new pairings uh the Scottie-Scheffler-Sam
05:47Burns pairing from the past you know Ryder Cup and President's Cup I know those guys wanted to
05:51play together they're good buddies it wasn't working and it seems that we found a new partner
05:56for Scottie-Scheffler that's a lot more successful in Russell-Henley and I think
06:00you know kind of play it forward this is really interesting because Henley's not a guy that
06:04you'd expect to see on a lot of these teams he played well over the last few years to earn his
06:07way onto this team but I think now you're going to hear him a lot of conversations for the Ryder
06:12Cup next year because he's a guy that can play well with Scottie-Scheffler so I think that that's
06:16a great partnership but on the other side of that you know I think it was I think uh uh Keegan and
06:22Sam Burns were like nine under combined yesterday and to bench both them for this session doesn't
06:27make a ton of sense to me uh Shopley-Cantley you kind of found some different partners for them
06:31yesterday as well that were working and to go away from that I know they want to play together
06:35but I think after this you might keep those two guys apart for the duration of this competition
06:40I mean at least tomorrow they're the last few times they can play together because you have
06:43both a four ball and a foursome session for four matches in each of those tomorrow but I think
06:48both if those if those guys lose in the fashion they're losing right now I think both those guys
06:51get rested tomorrow in the morning and you see him back to their old pairings in the afternoon
06:56I know that we said we weren't going to kill Weir because it's working out so well today but I still
07:00Charlie was stunned that he didn't play Tom Kim today it was still stunning just because he's the
07:04youngest one of the youngest guys you know he could play all five sessions he was the only guy
07:08bringing fire yesterday trying to get the crowd pumped up why the hell did you sit him today but
07:12again it's working for him so it's hard to criticize it didn't make any sense to me either
07:17I mean we were all smiling and I were recording our journal last night when these parents came
07:20out and I was stunned I just I cannot figure out why you bench a guy that you know in this
07:26competition when you have less depth than the Americans you've got to kind of use that the
07:30full extent of that roster and get a guy like Tom Kim in as many sessions as you possibly can but hey
07:35I mean I saw Tom Kim walking around in like a cool looking bucket hat earlier they got Min Woo Lee
07:41out in like an international hockey jersey pumping up the crowd and that's the other thing
07:46that's worth stating it was pretty subdued on the ground yesterday in Montreal not a ton of fans
07:51there for whatever reason maybe just because it was a Thursday early on and I think the internationals
07:56really kind of were hurt for not having as much fan support as they could have to bolster them
08:01this competition I mean we were talking about it like this thing should be the Australia every
08:06year because you know they're going to show up they're gonna be drinking their fosters getting
08:09after it so I think that today having that fan energy in a much bigger way and then having guys
08:16like Tom Kim and Min Woo to pump them up it's even though they're not playing it's helped a lot
08:21uh I got about 20 seconds left Charlie so Sunday afternoon it's starting to look like we're going
08:26to have ourselves something but you still think the U.S. is going to win you're not going to go
08:29against the U.S.A. still going to win I still think I still think U.S.A. like let's call it
08:35I think it's where we end up I like 16 and a half 13 and a half because I played that as an exact
08:40winner uh so 16 and a half to 13 and a half very nice at 11 and one if we could somehow bring that
08:45home Charlie great stuff as always we'll of course catch you and Smiley with the journals
08:49on the Smiley Show thanks to Ahead for the support here having Charlie on great job as always
