00:00Some of our fellow fishermen in the West Philippine Sea

00:04have been harassed by Chinese ships.

00:09Because of this, the Philippine Coast Guard has issued a PCG

00:13that they will protect our fellow fishermen.

00:15BN Manalo has the details.

00:21Just this July, a terrible experience was witnessed

00:26by fisherman Robert Mundoñedo in the Subic-Sambales Sea,

00:30which is 60 nautical miles away from Bajo de Masinloc,

00:35which is part of the West Philippine Sea.

00:37The Chinese maritime militia vessel was hit by a ship

00:40while they were sailing.

00:43My brother was taking a rest.

00:46I didn't expect that a ship would come.

00:50It was near, so we couldn't avoid it.

00:55We were about 30.

00:57Then my brother ran to the other side of the ship.

01:01I thought he was still there.

01:03I turned around and he was gone.

01:05He spent 3 days and 3 nights in the sea.

01:09He was only able to catch fish.

01:14Robert was almost starved and dehydrated

01:19when he found his fellow fishermen.

01:21But until now, his brother still hasn't found him.

01:25I'm still thinking about him.

01:28I don't think it's time for him to be gone.

01:31I'm just thinking about him.

01:33He's like a family to us.

01:34I'm calling on my fellow fishermen

01:37if there's any hope

01:41that we can go to my brother.

01:46Just like Robert,

01:47Sal Di Solera was also harassed by the Chinese

01:50when they bombed the water of the China Coast Guard ship

01:53on their boat in Bajo de Masinloc in Zambales in 2021.

01:58This was the first time he experienced such an incident

02:02in more than three decades of fishing in the area.

02:05And because of the strong waves,

02:06the tank they were using to cook even splashed into the sea.

02:11The Chinese Coast Guard was beside us.

02:12What I heard from them was,

02:17no peacing, no peacing.

02:19We had nothing to do. We left.

02:21We were still being tied up.

02:23We were being tied up by two Chinese Coast Guard ships.

02:27We were being tied up. We were exhausted.

02:30Our boats were damaged.

02:32Even so, they continued to fish and fish in one of the occupied territories.

02:38That's our territory.

02:40That's really ours. We should fight for it because it's ours.

02:44But despite the harassment from the Chinese,

02:48the Philippine Coast Guard assured them

02:50that they will continue to fight

02:52and protect the rights of our fishermen.

02:57with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources

03:00for us to have complementing efforts.

03:02In the event that we don't have a Coast Guard vessel in Bajo de Masinloc,

03:06then BFAR can take over.

03:08And then at the same time, if they don't have one,

03:10the Coast Guard will also be there to protect the rights of our fishermen.

03:40I am thankful to the government and to the local government.

03:47This is a big help for us fishermen.

04:04We are not yet in a situation where we need to have escorts,

04:08for example, to the United States.

04:09But we have decided to have a Joint Coast Guard Patrol.

04:13We are already studying this because

04:15it will speed up the addition of our assets

04:19because we will just be renting.
