The SMU Mustangs pulled off a stunning 66-42 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs, reclaiming the Iron Skillet for the first time since 2021. The defeat marked TCU's largest loss to SMU since 1985, leaving Horned Frogs fans in shock.
The game had no shortage of action, including touchdowns, interceptions, and an ejection. TCU head coach Sonny Dykes was ejected in the third quarter after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. At the time of his ejection, TCU trailed 41-21 early in the third quarter.
SMU fans waved goodbye as Dykes exited the field, likely marking his last appearance at Ford Stadium, with the SMU-TCU rivalry set to end after the 2025 season. Dykes previously coached SMU from 2018 to 2021 before taking over at TCU.
For TCU, the offense struggled to find its rhythm, while the defense continued to have difficulty stopping the run. Quarterback Josh Hoover completed 28 of 43 passes for 396 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, but TCU's one-dimensional offense was hindered by a lackluster ground game. Cam Cook managed only 24 rushing yards.
On the other side, SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings started over Preston Stone and made the most of the opportunity. Jennings completed 14 of 19 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. However, the standout performance came from running back Brashard Smith, who rushed for three touchdowns.
TCU will attempt to regroup next weekend when they travel to face Big 12 opponent Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday.
