00:00Maybe I'm more than what you think.
00:10Welcome back everyone it's Charlie this will be my full penguin episode one video.
00:14This is taking place inside the Batman universe Robert Pattinson's Batman Matt Reeves movies
00:19the entire series is meant to be a prequel to the events of the Batman two.
00:22So the idea is that it takes place just like a week or two after the end of the Batman
00:27movie, which is why the beginning of episode one is sort of like a recap of the end of
00:31the Batman movie is going to end right before the events of the Batman to Matt Reeves also
00:36revealed that the Batman to will take place during the winter season.
00:40So that means that the series will end around winter.
00:43If you're brand-new to the channel be sure to subscribe to get all the episodes there's
00:47a bunch Easter eggs here so careful for spoilers.
00:49If you have not seen the episode yet would start the beginning work our way through shot
00:53by shot talk about Easter eggs and WTF moments.
00:56Even with the title after hours a reference to penguin killing Alberto Falcone after hours
01:01at the iceberg lounge like it is after hours because it's basically shut down because of
01:06what the Riddler did destroying the dams flooding the city.
01:09The series is basically meant to be a cross between a scar face like penguins rise to
01:13power him becoming comic book penguin meets Sopranos meets the Batman another be a ton
01:19of questions about what Batman is doing during the events of the series will probably get
01:22more Easter eggs for him in the background to like they directly mentioned him at the
01:26beginning of the episode just to sort of place you in the timeline.
01:29The actual opening scene starts with the Batman theme music from the first movie because literally
01:34like the opening scene is a scene taken from the end of the first movie the couple brand-new
01:39perspectives that they show you during the cleanup process.
01:42But it's all meant to be from that ending scene where FEMA comes in like the government
01:46and the police are basically trying to rescue everyone they shot of the penguin looking
01:50outside Carmine Falcone's office is taken from the end of the Batman movie.
01:54They start with the news broadcast talking about everything that just happened basically
01:58to sort of catch you up to like a recap of the Batman movie itself.
02:02Everybody still seems really surprised by Carmine Falcone's death is his power vacuum.
02:06Everybody wonders what's going to happen next when they say his killer has not come forward
02:10yet that's because it was the penguin himself the shot Falcone irony then that he also shot
02:15his son his successor.
02:17They mentioned Bella Rey all a couple times remember she was running for mayor Matt Reeves
02:21reveals that she actually becomes mayor by the events of the Batman to so during the
02:26episode when he starts to arrange blackmailing some of the council members who were in debt
02:30to Carmine Falcone he's basically trying to get people on the inside of her administration.
02:35They mentioned the wealthier parts of the city have been unaffected by the Riddler's
02:38attack the poorest areas were the ones that were wrecked, which is where most of the series
02:42takes place like the dirtier parts of Gotham notice one of the towns on the news ticker
02:47reads Otis Berg which is a place in Gotham from the Batman comics like it's a neighborhood
02:52of Gotham.
02:53But it's also a funny callback to the Christopher Reeves Superman when Otis wanted to name a
02:57town for him after Lex Luthor had pulled off his plan to make all this real estate that
03:01he purchased in the desert wealthier by basically destroying the western seaboard of the United
03:06States Otis Berg Otis Berg the news mentions the drug problem around the city they show
03:15you a bunch of drops it becomes a big plot line during the episode because it's part
03:19of the Falcone's operation and used to be part of the Maroney's operation all explain
03:24that to because it involves the circumstances for how Sal Maroney wound up in black Cape
03:28Penitentiary from the comics in the first place.
03:31There's a lot of backstabbing and double crossing going on because we're talking about a bunch
03:34of big mob families from the Batman comics like it's very game of thrones with the mobs
03:38during the episode you notice that they've recast Mark strong as Carmine Falcone in present
03:43day he still dead after the events of the first Batman movie will pricey some flashbacks
03:48with the character Matt Reeves reveal the reason why they recast from John Turturro's
03:52version of Carmine Falcone is because the actor John Turturro was unavailable for filming
03:57the series Mark strong already looks a little bit younger than John Turturro without having
04:01to put any special makeup on.
04:03So is a little bit easier to de-age him without having to use heavy special effects for those
04:07flashback scenes a lot of you also remember that Mark strong has already been DC characters
04:12before he's most known as Sinestro from the Ryan Reynolds green lantern.
04:17Even though most the times we talk about the green lantern movie were making fun of it
04:20or Ryan Reynolds is making fun of it of all the things that you could make fun of in that
04:25movie in Ryan Reynolds has made fun of pretty much every aspect of that movie except for
04:30some of the other actors performances like Mark strong's Sinestro which I felt like was
04:34totally fine given all the other crazy stuff going on with that movie really big coincidence
04:39are also doing the HBO green lanterns series which is going to be happening in the next
04:43couple years that be completely disconnected from Ryan Reynolds version of green lantern
04:48is going to be a DCU series more connected to what's happening with the new Superman
04:52movie in James Gunn's DCU this penguin series is just connected to the Matt Reeves Batman
04:57universe which itself is not currently connected to the DC was like its own little universe
05:02all by itself.
05:04But as you can see I put the brand-new DC studios logo at the beginning of this.
05:08So even if the show is not connected to James Gunn's DCU is DC studios producing all the
05:14stuff just like Marvel studios produces all the Marvel movies and the Marvel TV shows
05:19a lot of you will recognize the logo is based on the DC comics logo that they use from 1976
05:24to 2005.
05:25So if you bought any comics that were published during that period you recognize the logo,
05:30but the news and most of the other characters throughout the episode talk about the power
05:33struggle the vacuum left after Carmine Falcone's death.
05:37There's a lot of other crime families in Gotham trying to steal their territory from
05:40them all this is happening and people inside the family vying for power.
05:44Then you have the penguin character who's also doing the same thing, but he sort of
05:48represents his own little faction just inside the Falcone family technically he's still
05:52inside the family all the different moves that he makes during the episode is to basically
05:57secure his position with Sophia Falcone so that she doesn't suspect him of Alberto's
06:02death anymore within the context the series Carmine Falcone had two sons and a daughter
06:07Sophia Falcone Alberto who we meet in the other brother.
06:10The not really clear why it's Sophia who's trying to take over the family and not the
06:14older brother, but maybe they'll deal with that in future episodes the really trying
06:18to make her feel like she's the alpha inside the family and she is playing a version of
06:22the comic book character the hangman character from Batman dark victory adapting parts of
06:27that storyline like she was part of Batman the long Halloween and Batman dark victory
06:32which was sort of like a sequel to long Halloween.
06:34No big surprise then that Matt Reeves said the long Halloween inspired some of the plot
06:38of the first Batman movie.
06:40So the sequel to that comic book story also inspires the sequel to that movie.
06:45If you haven't read that story Sophia Falcone on the show is very much in the tone of the
06:49comic book version the character just completely bat shit crazy penguin starts the episode
06:54traveling to the wreckage of the iceberg lounge in his purple Maserati purple for penguin
06:59notice that he waddles like he does in the comics and he's got his trademark umbrella
07:03but because it's raining so that they try to do in a very real-world kind of way.
07:07This is meant to be the story of how he becomes the comic book penguin so like he doesn't
07:10start out that way.
07:12They've also changed his name inside the Matt Reeves Batman universe instead of his name
07:16being Oswald Cobblepot it's actually Oz Cobb that's not shortened like that's his actual
07:21name Oz Cobb just to make him sound more real world penguin in the comics came from money
07:27this version of penguin does not he breaks in the car mine safe and steals a file that
07:31he had with dirt on a whole bunch of people really powerful people notice all the names
07:36here these will probably relevant for future episodes future Batman related plot like Eric
07:41Cotter you'd hear HH look at this old photo here it says founders on it.
07:45This seems like more court of owls references to like the founding of Gotham city with the
07:49most powerful families inside Gotham that one of the files inside here he finds is on
07:54one of the councilman Sebastian Haiti.
07:56It seems like he's been paying him off like he's in debt to Carmine Falcone is a gambling
07:59problem.
08:00So penguin tries to use that to get a man on the inside of Bella reales administration
08:05the government the person with all the candid photos getting it on with the woman is John
08:09VD the nephew of Carmine Falcone in the comics and one of the lieutenants inside their family
08:15who apparently hates penguin and penguin probably hates him to Alberto shows up no idea what
08:20he was trying to do here probably also trying to steal something from the office of the
08:25safe you notice penguin thinking on his feet here calling audibles he does this throughout
08:29the episode like okay gotta save my position here.
08:32Otherwise I'm to get shot in the face.
08:34So he plays it off like he was trying to help Alberto like I'm here to make sure you get
08:38all these jewels you can't trust the other guys, but you can definitely trust me.
08:42So the big idea here is they didn't plan on killing Alberto as he reveals to his mother
08:46later it was just a snap decision in the heat of the moment he did not like being made fun
08:51of being laughed at.
08:52So that's meant to inform his character like the rest of the Batman story like however
08:56long he stays in these movies.
08:58Also listening to his mother verbally abuse him the way that she does you have to imagine
09:01he probably grew up with her being like that 24 seven.
09:05So it's very easy to understand why he has so many mental issues many complexes right
09:09now if you seen any my house the dragon videos talking about game of thrones universe Eamon
09:14Targaryen is a little bit like this like the worst thing you can do on that show is laugh
09:19at him same thing with the penguin laughing at the penguin is like a death sentence and
09:24speaking of which talk about pissing the penguin off the way that Matt Reeves explained it
09:27during the events of the first movie is that the penguin is a derogatory term that people
09:32call him.
09:33He actually hates it when people call him the penguin.
09:36That's why you see most of the people that know him or have some sort of working relationship
09:39with them call him Oz as in Oz Cobb then Alberto claims that John Beatty was going to stop
09:45him from making some revolutionary new drug.
09:48So he's trying to keep it secret in this is the plan that he then takes on as his own
09:51plan is going to use it to try to write it to power eventually there couple lore dumps
09:56that are relevant to later in the episode we find out about Carmine's ring that was
09:59actually the boss of bosses ring from Gotham city that he took from Salvatore Moroni when
10:04he double crossed and got him thrown in blackgate penitentiary.
10:08So part of the idea in the history of Gotham city.
10:10The idea is that Salvatore Moroni worked with Carmine Falcone like all the different mobs
10:15were in collusion with each other to distribute the drops drug around the city and then what
10:19happened is Carmine Falcone wanted Salvatore Moroni's territory his drops business.
10:24So basically sold him out to the feds got him arrested thrown in black gate and then
10:27took over his territory.
10:29That's why Salvatore Moroni wants revenge on the Falcone so badly played by is everybody
10:34recognize Clancy Brown who's played a bunch of DC characters in the past.
10:38Most people remember him is Lex Luthor though outside the Falcone's the Moroni's are meant
10:42to be the most powerful crime family.
10:45So that's why he tries to play both of those families against each other when penguin gives
10:49his big speech about Rex Calabrese the old mob boss that he grew up knowing he's actually
10:54from the comics is meant to tee up his whole scar face mission that he's on in life to
10:59become a person that's respected.
11:01Then of course Alberto does the exact wrong thing you could possibly do in this moment
11:05laughing at him and he kills him love the comedic way they play this to like WTF but
11:10funny the F bomb the intro titles with the body inside the letters will see they have
11:15funny intros like this for each of the episodes it might just be for episode one.
11:19So the big problem now is the has to figure out what to do with the body in the way that
11:23Matt Reeves explain it him killing Alberto basically informs everything he does the rest
11:28of the series like this haunts him through the rest of the episodes they play some of
11:32the new penguin theme music which sounds very much like classic penguin and we wind up meeting
11:37his new underling like the new person he takes under his wing who is trying to steal his
11:41wheels off the car with a couple other kids like trying to steal from the wrong person
11:46at the wrong time you might recognize the actor this is Renzi Feliz from runaways his
11:50name on the show is Victor Aguilar the couple special dates and Easter eggs on Alberto's
11:56phone when he's going through looking for information.
11:58So he finds out when the shipment is arriving.
12:01Remember he's going to use that and try and ride that to power.
12:04But you notice Gotham Knights on there.
12:06That's the name of a sports team inside the city is also a name from the comics to also
12:10on October 31st on Halloween.
12:12There is a date this is Sophia.
12:14So the ideas that used to visit her inside Arkham asylum all the time just because they
12:18had a good brother sister relationship.
12:21The fact that the date is on Halloween is a reference to Sophia Falcone from the long
12:25Halloween in the Batman dark victory comic book stories.
12:29They slowly start to bond in penguin search talking little bit about his back story.
12:32He reveals that he had brothers he has a father.
12:35We see some pictures of them later in the episode and I'm assuming that at some point
12:39they died before he graduated from high school because at a certain point you start seeing
12:43only pictures of him and his mother and it looks like he's in high school when he takes
12:47into this woman here her name on the show is Eve Carlo which feels like a sly wink at
12:51Basil Carlo the original clay face from the classic comics.
12:55He wasn't a metahuman like the second version of clay face they did his origin story during
12:59the new Batman cake crusader TV series which big coincidence Matt Reeves was a producer
13:04on with JJ Abrams and Bruce Tim they basically did it like Batman the animated series.
13:10But what if it took place during a more period accurate 1940s with that level of technology
13:16So like Batman during that series doesn't have all the gadgets that he has from Batman
13:19the animated series.
13:21They take the body then hide it in an abandoned car and he takes Salvatore Moroni's ring.
13:25So he hasn't developed his plan to pin his death on Moroni yet that doesn't come to later
13:30in the episode.
13:31But remember they put the body in this car.
13:34This becomes important at the end of the episode when Victor successfully bargains for his
13:39life here.
13:40You have to remember penguin really did seem like is about to kill like okay I guess I'll
13:43let you live for a little while will see if you're useful.
13:46Then he takes him back to his personal apartment like where he actually does sleep and notice
13:51the doors on his bedroom seem like modified doors from a bank safe like the safest possible
13:56place you could find to sleep taking a little nap inside a bank vault.
14:01We get a look at his deformed foot is the reason he's got the waddle the canon of the
14:04show.
14:05I think is that he grew up so poor that his family couldn't afford to get his foot fixed
14:08when he was a baby.
14:09So he just grew up having to live with it like that.
14:12Which also notice in a lot of his childhood photos.
14:14He doesn't have that giant gash scar across his face.
14:18So I think at some point they'll explain where he got that scar when he complains about the
14:22Riddler calling him a madman in the comics they have worked together a lot in the past.
14:26You also seen in the Batman movies before to, but at least right now in the Matt Reeves
14:30Batman universe.
14:31He absolutely hates the Riddler we go to the warehouse where he runs his drops business
14:36out of it becomes a big plot point later in the episode because the Falcons want to stop
14:40it all because there's so much heat on them after Carmine's death from the feds and from
14:44the local police when they mentioned some of their men got jumped by the Odessa mob
14:48that's a Russian mob from the Batman comics Burnley town.
14:51They also mention is Burnley town massive another American mob from the Batman comics.
14:57So this is a lot of different crime families around the Matt Reeves Batman universe we
15:01go to Carmine Falcone's personal house outside the city yet remember he was very powerful.
15:05He had many houses all over the place.
15:07This is meant to be like his main residence outside the city.
15:10We find out that John Beatty calls him in to talk about shutting down the drops operation
15:14and they almost kick him out of the family like all you done a lot of good for us.
15:18Thanks but no thanks and in another move to try and call an audible and save his position
15:23in the family relative like save his power.
15:25He tries to sell them on Alberto Falcone's plan not really understanding what was in
15:30the shipment that was coming like Alberto never told him what was coming all while Sophia
15:35Falcone walks in from the background and we find out later that she was actually in
15:39on the plan with Alberto.
15:41So she knows the penguin was connected to Alberto like how else would you know about
15:45the plan if Alberto was with you the night that he disappeared their couple conversations
15:49that they have throughout the episode with a hint at their history together.
15:53She implies that she got put in Arkham asylum by Carmine because of something that they
15:57did like she accidentally killed someone or something like that in penguin informed on
16:02her to her father Carmine and Carmine is the one that put her in Arkham the way that she
16:06talks about it.
16:07She makes it sound like penguin sold her out and she has a vendetta against him for that.
16:12But at least at this early point in the episode she only suspects the has something to do
16:16with Alberto's disappearance like where were you last night was going on by these bullet
16:20holes in your car.
16:21This is all mysterious the way their positioning their characters there little bit like love
16:25interests but also kind of rivals like penguin is kind of afraid of her just because she
16:29so unpredictable so unhinged.
16:32She literally mentions her hangman name from the dark victory Batman comics and apparently
16:37Sophia did not know that Alberto was an addict like apparently she been in Arkham for a long
16:43time and he just been hiding that from her when he went to visit her on the subway car
16:47their approach by one of the Riddler's followers.
16:49Remember this is like right after the events of the movie.
16:51So he still has a very large following even though he was thrown in Arkham the QR code
16:55that he shows him on screen.
16:57You can actually scan that it takes you to the Rotolata website with more messages in
17:01more news articles that they were posting on their social media accounts.
17:05I did think it was funny that he was hiding his car key to this car inside the wheel well
17:09like others put it in here nobody's gonna steal the car who be stupid enough to do that
17:13listening to Dolly Parton which they pay off at the end of the episode playing that nine
17:17to five song over the end credits the way they play this to it seems like he goes to
17:22visit his mother on a pretty regular basis because he's taking care of her.
17:25She has dementia.
17:26Also it looks like he hides a ton of cash there just in case emergency cash and it is
17:31very much an emergency right now because Sophia Falcone suspects that he killed Alberto.
17:36It seems like he really does care about his mother's well-being like they feel like it's
17:39the two of them against the rest of world like nobody else cares about them the way
17:43they care about each other, but she is so abusive so bad to him that she would make
17:48like Cersei Lannister seem like the mother of the year.
17:51Even when he's watching that old song on the TV, it gives him the idea to shift the
17:56blame for Alberto's death on to Salvatore Moroni by giving him his ring back and dumping
18:01Alberto's body cutting the finger off like the ring finger at the Falcone's.
18:05So they think that it's the Moroni's coming after them for revenge for getting Moroni
18:09thrown in prison.
18:10Then he goes to Blackgate to see Moroni and they talk about their history together.
18:14It sounds like it's not good like it sounds like penguin had something to do with him
18:17getting thrown in prison.
18:19Pretty much everything the penguin says here about teaming up with him against the Falcone's
18:23is only half right like he'll use whatever he can to try and work his way to power like
18:29he's playing both families against each other, but the way he leaves giving him his ring
18:33look how he perks up when he pulls his ring out like almost forgot to give you this Moroni
18:37suspects that he killed Carmine even though he doesn't come out and say all because how
18:41else would he have gotten the ring if he didn't pull it off of his dead finger when he tries
18:46to go back to his apartment.
18:47There's a sign for orchid diamonds.
18:49There is a black orchid character in the Batman comics, but I don't know if this is meant
18:52to specifically be a reference to that Sophia's men chase him down and wind up catching him.
18:57But there are a couple funny moments here like WTF moments he hides in his own trunk
19:01and it almost works.
19:03He winds up stabbing the dude with the air freshener which he was bragging about earlier
19:07in the episode and I love the funny WTF moment where he gets run over by the school bus full
19:13of children with him waving at the children the children have no idea what just happened.
19:17Sophia then tells him the story about how the guards at Arkham mistreated her making
19:21her the other inmates stripped naked every day stripping him notice obviously is wearing
19:26a fat suit like this is Colin Farrell here.
19:28He's not big like this.
19:29The other funny detail that you don't see thankfully they do not show to you like they
19:33don't go full Monty, but Colin Farrell said on the day when they film this scene.
19:38They made this naked fat suit for him.
19:40But they also made a prosthetic dong that was shaped like a penguin.
19:44Thank you very much HBO for not making us watch that Sophia then reveals why she was
19:49so close to Alberto because Alberto would visit her all the time and even though he
19:53was a douche.
19:54She cared about him.
19:56She straight up kills the kid that informed on penguin like I you were there the night
20:00that they saw the body coming out of the club.
20:03She doesn't kill the kid because she hated him.
20:05But because she wants to mess with the penguins head like look at how crazy I am in the whole
20:09idea here is that he developed this contingency plan with Victor to frame the Moroni's for
20:15the death of Alberto.
20:16If something like this were to happen.
20:18So that's why he was trying to call Victor on the phone unsuccessfully like he was trying
20:21to tell him like okay, it's go time they're going to capture me pretty soon to get ready
20:26with that car in the body.
20:27It seems like it works like a charm like Sophia freaks out, but now she doesn't suspect penguin
20:32was behind this, which is why they celebrate by getting the two suicide slushies the penguin
20:37told Victor about earlier in the episode the couple funny moments about Victor being
20:42too squeamish about cutting up the body.
20:44So like that's why it was the entire body in the trunk when he crashed the car, but
20:48overall I love the vibe of the episode will see where they take the series will be really
20:51interested to see what else they invoke from the rest of the Batman mythos inside the Robert
20:55Pattinson universe, but everybody post all your reactions in your theories in the comments

21:02episode just write them in the comments they wind up playing the end credits with that
21:06Dolly Parton song 9 to 5 they played earlier in the episode their couple Easter eggs throughout
21:11the actual end credits is mostly locations from the series around Gotham city in characters
21:16from the series.
21:18The really big reminder is that episodes from now on like episode two through the finale
21:22will actually be on Sunday nights, but not this coming Sunday that the week after Sunday
21:27and it'll be weekly after that.
21:28I don't know why they're airing episode one the waiting like 10 plus days to air episode
21:33two, but for whatever reason HBO decided to do it that way.
