00:00Jay Gruden
00:02Who obviously knows
00:04Kosh and a hand and and the system very very well
00:08He had some things to say that I think are
00:12Their eye-opening
00:14There's some truth to them and they may not be the most comfortable thing for 49er fans to hear. Okay
00:20Check this out
00:23Listen to what Jay says about Kosh and a hand when he's in known
00:27Passing situations. I'm just not a big fan of his past his true past concepts when he's down and he knows
00:33It's not a big fan of me. I don't know
00:35I just I just don't understand a lot of them and that's just something you have to continue to work on through OTAs training camp
00:41And all that stuff you got to prepare to be down
00:42You know, it's always it's a lot easier to call plays when you're ahead by 14 points on first and second down
00:47Yeah, not many coaches have had a lot of success calling plays down having to come back
00:52It's very difficult when you're a one-dimensional team
00:55It's very difficult in NFL to have success. I'm not saying that any I did have a lot of success
01:00I'm just saying from a past game standpoint when I study teams, that would be one of the last teams
01:05I would look at as far as past concepts go on known passing situation
01:09I'd go elsewhere and look for other past concepts
01:11Jay's making these comments with John middle cough from the volume in the three and out podcast
01:17How does that grab you Kyle Shanahan is essentially bad in known passing situations?
01:24I don't think that he's wrong and shout out 95 7 the game alum. Yes middle car. It was a brief run here
01:32It was a self immolation sensation for those of you who have a great history here on 95 7 the game
01:39You know exactly what I'm talking about. Oh, yeah blew up his own spot. I don't think all for now
01:45He's doing great great guy
01:46I don't think that he was the lesser half of that tandem at the time
01:50But I don't want to get too bogged down with that
01:52I don't think that Jay Gruden is wrong in what he's saying and you look at the reason why
01:57They were what Owen 31 going into last year win behind because I do think that this offense is built by design
02:0521 personnel to running backs in a tight end or 12 personnel with two tight ends
02:10You don't do a lot of three wide receiver sets
02:13you almost do no for receiver sets, which is what you want to do when you're down by a
02:19Score or two scores late in the game
02:21I don't think that this offense by personnel is built that way and I don't think that Kyle Shanahan scheme is
02:28built that way where you have Brock Purdy with an empty backfield and
02:33Two receivers right and two receivers left and a tight end and you're just gonna sit back there and sling it
02:39They don't do that a lot and they don't do that very well
02:41They don't but I here's what I'll I'll buy from Jay Gruden like just as a fan
02:46And and this is sort of like just a feeling in your belly
02:48Like it's not a comfortable feeling and I don't mean just losing like trailing in a football game
02:54There are a lot of games. We watch them all we watch them all and
02:58There are a lot of games when I watch certain offenses and quarterbacks when I see them down
03:03By five points in the fourth quarter, like I feel pretty good about what they're gonna do Kirk Cousins on Monday night
03:10He came out after one play. I'm like, oh my god
03:13The Falcons are gonna go right down the field like this is a piece of cake
03:16Now is that on the Eagles? Whatever? I don't know and the Niners do have some recent
03:22Responses that they could give Jay Gruden here. They could say hey Jay
03:25Let's show you the second halves of the games against the Packers and the Lions in the playoffs last year
03:29Let's show you what Brock did in known passing situations and how well that went but in the grand scheme
03:37Jay's not wrong. It doesn't look good when when they're down and when Kurt Warner told us that
03:44That it's literally part of the plan to play with the lead. I thought to myself. Well sure
03:52Great plan, let's let's score first
03:55That's a wonderful plan, but my gosh like it's not gonna work that way all the time
04:00And so I do think it's a fair thing
04:03To wonder if Kyle Shanahan could make some adjustments to the way they go about those passing concepts
04:09I think that it would have to be a complete adjustment to the way they construct their roster and the way he goes about
04:15Constructing his offense because he likes to do a lot of pre snap motion. We know this
04:21He likes to do a lot of shifting a lot of sleight of hand if he has everybody
04:25In tow and his offense is everything that he wants it to be
04:29It's not really geared toward the hurry up or the no huddle because his advantage is
04:35Jet sweep motion shift this guy that way shift the other guy the other way all those things that we call eye candy
04:42Well that takes time when you're trying to play the hurry up and you're trying to go pass first down the stretch
04:48You're down by five with two minutes to go
04:50His offense is not generally built that way and I also don't think that the personnel is built that way
04:56Debo and Iuk neither one of them is a straight line field stretcher and beyond that
05:02Juwan Jennings is a you know, he's a 20-yard and in receiver. You don't have really a deep threat. You don't have a lot of
05:10Explosive weapons 20 yards down the field in the pass game
05:13Jay Gruden, guess what? He's gonna join us in a little bit over a half hour. Jay Gruden's gonna join us
05:19He also said this to John Mitalkov with regard to Sean Payton and John Gruden's passing games
05:26When compared with Kyle Shanahan's the Sean Payton pass game when he was at New Orleans
05:30That's and my brother when he's at Oakland and obviously Tampa Bay
05:34Those were the past games that I I really liked I really studied when John was out of football
05:38Sean Payton and Drew Brees and obviously Tom Brady
05:40He was they were kind of different Bill O'Brien and all those coordinators that he had there
05:45They were a little bit different
05:46They still spread the field pretty good and made it a little bit easier for the quarterback and it just made more sense to me
05:52On the eye where people wore a wire they were getting there who were there reading?
05:56Sometimes I just feel like Kyle guys are just running all over the place with no rhyme or reason
06:00But those are the teams when Drew Brees was in his heyday
06:03It was Sean and they had you know that they were the work to backs
06:06They worked the weak side linebackers and they worked the crossing routes extremely. Well
06:11That was one of the best offenses. I think I
06:14Really look forward to asking him some questions here coming up again at 345
06:18That's Jay Gruden because for him to say that
06:22In the passing game, it looks like guys are just kind of running all over the place
06:26It's disorganized. He's basically saying that sounds very
06:31non
06:33And how did it like what couldn't you respond and be like
06:37What had Brock Purdy throw for 4,200 yards and 31 touchdown passes and
06:43And finish top five in the MVP voting if if the whole thing is a mess then again
06:49He does have some data on his side
06:52Which is that they yeah, they're not built to come from behind and and why not?
06:57Like why not if you've got two 25 million dollar receivers and you're about to have a 60 million dollar quarterback
07:04Why can't you just drop back and and have it be less gimmicky?
07:09I think it's a fair question
07:10And I want to hear his answer as to what he sees when they are behind and I'm thinking about what you just said
07:16And last year like them coming from behind and I'm just looking at it and against Pittsburgh
07:22They never trailed in the opener and against the Rams. They didn't trail in the second half
07:28I'm a second now. So when you you want to talk about coming from behind?
07:31Well, it's not being down 17 to 10 in the second quarter that's being down late in the game
07:36You crushed the Giants you motorboated, Arizona
07:39you pounded Dallas and then the Cleveland game is one we could look at where you did try to come from behind and
07:46Brock Purdy got the ball back with about three minutes to go and
07:50Actually, I'm sorry the minute 40 to go after Dustin Hopkins field goal
07:54And he led you down the field and got you into field goal position and your kicker
07:59Moody Jake Moody missed a kick that would have given you the win
08:02But I wonder what he sees
08:04When the Niners do go three wide receivers or four wide receivers if their concepts are not up to snuff with the other NFL team
08:12Again, we'll talk to Jay Gruden in 35 minutes. This would be real interesting. Let's go back to the phones to Matt in a Rinda
08:18Hi, Matt. Thanks for calling
08:22Thanks for having me on gentlemen
08:24You're hitting a great topic today
08:27Mark I'm good. I don't know why I said Mark. We're not friends. It's not like I know
08:32Anyway, it's okay. Our names are out there Matt. It's okay
08:37All right. Well, all right
08:39You know last segment you gonna quote you here. You said, you know, Brandon didn't do anything offensive
08:45Against the Vikings. I agree with you. He didn't do anything offensive at all
08:48He's paid like a dog be a dog and you guys are addressing this topic like the other coast radio and I love it
08:55He's paid like a dog be a dog. He's got to step up and be a dog. So good. This one's for you
09:02We all got a big test. You ready? Yeah. All right
09:06This whole topic that you guys have stoked for all of us
09:11Is that you know, I'm not gonna lie. I'm not gonna lie. I'm not gonna lie
09:15Topic that you guys have stoked for all of us in this swirl that we're in
09:20It's all about the diners not quite having hit expectations yet
09:26And you know why it's happening and you know what it's called
09:31Tell me
09:33It's a frustration sensation, baby nice that's a bar hit him with that granny's
09:40He owes us money now, man, thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you Matt not too frustrating yet
09:45But if they lose against LA which I can't imagine that they will but they're allowed to lose to use your lexicon
09:52It is what I checked it's within the rules you follow the one and two George Kittle didn't practice today
09:57Debo and Christian McCaffrey won't play on
10:00Sunday and if you go out there and lose and Brandon Iuke is not dominant
10:04Well, then yeah, we can talk about the frustration that would fall on there
10:08So you're being paid like a dog. You got to be a dog, right? Okay. Okay. So again, you're not gonna get any disagreement with me
10:15you're simply gonna say like I knew this was gonna happen and I tried to warn Brandon Iuke and
10:21This is because not just the money. This is not just the money
10:25This is because the way that he got his money, but now we have boiled down a four-year
10:31120 million dollar extension. We've now boiled it down to Sunday
10:36Sunday to start your teammates are hurt
10:38And so now go earn your 120 million dollars this weekend without any context of what else is going on on the field
10:47That's the only thing I'm sort of pushing against
10:49I like it's okay to hold brand into a standard every single weekend and all of his teammates for that matter
