00:00Let's hear from everybody, ok? Why do you think the Niners lost this one?
00:05Where is your focus? Jonathan in the City, first up here on Willie and Dibby. Hi Jonathan, what's good?
00:13Nothing, you know, especially after a loss like that. Hey, let me tell you, man, let me tell you guys again.
00:18This 49ers, this Kyle Shanahan team, they're a repeat offender.
00:23How'd they lose to the Minnesota Vikings last year? If you watch those two games, you can't tell which from which.
00:28Didn't they give up a big play just before the half last year? Same way they gave up a big play, 97 yards to JJ.
00:34And it doesn't matter who the defensive coordinator is, they just seem to just let the number one weapon in the other team go about his business.
00:43The coverage on special teams is trash, and aside from a few guys like Fred Warner, they're all trash.
00:50And correct me if I'm wrong, the book might be out on Purdy. I mean, what do you do against Purdy?
00:56You crowd the line of scrimmage with four, five, six guys, and not necessarily everybody's coming.
01:01And the guys that would drop coverage, they would drop right in the middle of the field. You know why?
01:06Because that's the Brock Purdy bread and butter.
01:09So Jonathan, can I ask? Jonathan, I want to interrupt you because I want to ask you a question because you're a good friend of the show.
01:15And like, with full understanding of the frustration that fans feel, you're doing exactly what, in my opinion, I don't really understand why this happens after games.
01:31You just called almost every player on the team trash. Did you feel that way Tuesday morning last week?
01:38Well, I've been feeling the same way since they lost the Super Bowl.
01:44Okay. So the Niners, like, Jonathan, are you speaking from emotion or this is what you think? The Niners and the majority of the players on this team are trash.
01:56No, I'm not saying that, but it seems like when they're putting a jam, they don't have an adjustment. And that drives me nuts.
02:05I mean, as a genius, a stylist, how come when he's putting a jam, they can't do anything else?
02:13You know, like, oh, we're putting a jam because that guy missed a blobber. Just a bunch of excuses to still be dealing with it.
02:21Yeah, Jonathan, thank you very much. I mean, that I can hear. I didn't love that there wasn't seemingly a, and I don't want to say there wasn't a better game plan,
02:33because sometimes, again, you and I talked about this, I don't want the Niners and their fan base to sound like a Serena Williams press conference.
02:40And here's what I mean by that, because Serena is wonderful. She's the greatest tennis player I've ever seen in my entire life.
02:46But Serena Williams, and maybe she's right to do this, Serena was so good that her press conferences after matches, if she ever lost, were always about her.
02:56If you lose, it's because something you did wrong. Period.
03:01Never, ever, ever did you just get outplayed. And I was also frustrated that the Niners did not have a game plan that seemed to be working.
03:11But I don't want to make that solely about Kyle Shanahan and Nick Sorensen. Like, the Vikings had a game plan too, and they had players to go execute,
03:20and I thought they did a really good job. A really good job. And so that can be totally frustrating.
03:26But every single one of you that calls today, if you want to do this like, on Tuesday the Niners were Super Bowl favorites,
03:36and then six days later, Kyle sucks, and Brock sucks, and the Niners are frauds.
03:44Like, come on, man. Do you know how many of the top favorites in Weeks 1 and 2 lost their game outright?
03:51More than half of the most favored teams in the whole, that's why all of you are out of your survivor pool. You're all gone.
03:59They're all gone.
04:00The Bengals lost, and the Ravens lost, and the Niners lost, and the Lions lost. Seven and a half point favorites.
04:08You're all gone, unless you bet against whoever the Panthers are playing. Those are the only people left.
04:13So what? Everyone's trash? I don't know, man. Like, I would love to focus on the frustration of this game
04:22without moving all the way down the road of the Niners are now a horrible football team, and they're fraudulent.
04:28And I look forward to the new power rankings that come out from whatever source, because after Week 1,
04:34the Niners were either No. 1 or No. 2, alongside Kansas City. And Kansas City's 2-0, so they'll be No. 1,
04:40but if you want to look at all the teams in the NFL, you've got Pittsburgh at 2-0, and there are nine 2-0 teams right now, Mark.
04:48So is Pittsburgh now suddenly one of the nine best teams in football, even though they didn't score a touchdown in Week 1?
04:55Not according to Vegas.
04:56I believe they have one touchdown on the year, and yet they're 2-0, which you can't be better than 2-0 after two games,
05:02but do we suddenly reconfigure our power rankings? And so the Niners are 1-1, so now at best,
05:08they're the 10th best team in football. I don't want to overreact to what I saw yesterday.
05:13I do think that there are things that you saw yesterday that are troubling.
05:18And for me, the Ayuk Trent rust is a thing. The lack of a backup running back is a thing.
05:26And, you know, you want to look at other issues. The pass rush has not been terribly effective.
05:33Christian is not going to be back anytime soon. It is a thing. Like, it's a thing.
05:39I think everybody's expectations should probably move a little bit.
05:44I mean, we said for a year, well, the Niners would never do anything without Christian.
05:50Now he's gone, we had one good game, and everyone's like, I don't need Christian.
05:55No, you do. You need Christian McCaffrey.
05:58It doesn't mean that the season's over if he never comes back, or if he doesn't come back for half of it.
06:01It doesn't mean the season's over, but I don't find them to be as dominant.
06:06And I don't find that to be some sort of shot at Christian McCaffrey.
06:10If the Vikings lose Justin Jefferson for a period of time, that's not as good of a team.
06:15The Rams, you'll see them this week, lost both of their star receivers. Not as good of a team.
06:20How's Miami doing next week? How are we doing? Is that going to go well?
06:25How's Green Bay doing? How's Green Bay?
06:28Well, they won. Everyone thought they were going to lose, though.
06:31They're dogs in their home opener at Lambeau Field.
06:34You know who the favorite is now in the NFC to win the Super Bowl?
06:37Or to come out of the NFC for the Super Bowl?
06:39Is it Philly?
06:41No! It's the Niners!
06:44Yes! Yes!
06:46Yeah, we'll see after tonight if Philly wins, but yeah, your point is well taken.
06:50It's not even close. Philly will not, if they win tonight, pass the Niners.
06:54They might move up a few points.
06:55The odds are looking at the long play, and you're expecting McCaffrey to come back,
06:59and you're expecting Trent and Brandon Aiyuk to shake off Rust and all those other things,
07:04but in the short look at what happened yesterday, it was a little bit of a shock to the system.
07:11The fact that Aiyuk again, week two, really a non-factor.
07:15Trent Williams gave up four pressures, and Trent looked old and stiff and slow.
07:21This is not the dominant Trent Williams that we're used to seeing.
07:24Minnesota's defensive front owned the Niners all night.
07:28They were much better. They were much, much better.
07:30And by the way, same on the other side of the ball.
07:33I know Nick was solid, good, whatever word you want to use.
07:38He was really good. He was good.
07:40He was a lone wolf.
07:42Yeah, but the rest of the defensive line wasn't, and the bottom line was they did not get home.
07:46They did not get home nearly enough on Sam Darnold.
07:50And I give the Vikings offensive line a truckload of credit for that.
07:54When I hear Fred Warner say that the Justin Jefferson play was basically his fault, which Fred, no it wasn't.
08:02But you still love hearing stuff like this.
08:04When a man covers blitz, I was one of the guys that was blitzing,
08:07and I got to get home to get some pressure on Sam.
08:09You know, he's able to step up in the pocket and deliver a great ball to Justin,
08:13and we just got to find a way to get him down right there.
08:15Okay, you blitzed. You didn't get there. You got beat.
08:19You got beat. So, yeah.
08:22That's leadership.
08:24It's leadership. He's awesome. He's the best.
08:27Yeah, you know, I need to be better on that play.
08:29No, Fred, that wasn't on you.
08:31It was on Odom, who got benched, and it was on Jair Brown, who took a bad route.
08:38Keep going.
08:40You want to know who Richard Sherman blames?
08:42He's played defensive back for this team.
08:44Mooney Ward?
08:46Richard Sherman podcast.
08:48They allowed him to throw a 97-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson.
08:53Unacceptable, no matter what part of the game you're in,
08:56no matter what situation, no matter if it's backed up,
08:58whatever the situation is.
09:00You got two safeties guarding Justin Jefferson.
09:03He split the defense.
09:05You should never put those guys in that situation.
09:07He should be doubled at all times.
09:09He's the best player on their football team.
09:11He's not a guy that you should let loose or not have an eye on or say,
09:14oh, they're going to run the ball. Let them run the ball.
09:16Let them run the ball in that situation.
09:18We went too deep. We stopped Justin Jefferson.
09:20They ran a play like that in week one.
09:22Had some success.
09:24It was a post-corner to Justin Jefferson.
09:26Had some success this week.
09:28It was a corner post, and he was able to get behind the defense.
09:30Sam Darnold threw a beautiful football for the 97-yard touchdown.
09:34Okay, so he's blaming the coaches.
09:36This is a bad setup.
09:38The other thing I'd like to point out is the Niners should sign the ref immediately.
09:42That was the fastest referee I've ever seen in my entire life.
09:45I'm so glad you're mentioning this.
09:46Did you see that guy run?
09:48Not only did he run.
09:50It was incredible.
09:52But he stops, and then he sprints again.
09:54Get out of the way.
09:56But he flips his hips, and he backpedals into the end zone.
09:59Dude, I have no idea how that guy's legs are still attached to his body.
10:02I'm so glad you pointed that out, because I've watched the replay a second time,
10:06and I'm like, dude, who is that ref?
10:08Nimble and fast.
10:10Yeah, I hate referee dibs.
10:12Mark took the lead.
10:14I like this one.
10:16This one's funny.
10:18Xfinity mobile text line, 5-1-0.
10:20Last year, Bosa blamed Wilks for a play like that.
10:22This was not a play like that.
10:24I just want everyone to, like, that's my perspective.
10:27That was a zero blitz, what happened in the game last year.
10:30And Charverius Ward should have intercepted the ball.
10:33But he didn't.
10:35But that's a poor play call.
10:37This is a different poor play call, if you will.
10:39But this was not an all-out blitz where you left Justin Jefferson one-on-one.
10:43What Richard is pointing out is you let him get a free run off the line,
10:47and he's the best receiver in football.
10:50And safeties don't run like that.
10:52You can't, like, that only works, to Fred's point, if you get home.
10:58You have to get home.
11:00And the Viking offensive line beat you.
11:03They beat you.
11:05They created time.
11:07And Sam delivered a beautiful ball to the best receiver in the game.
11:09And it went for 97 yards, and you lose, dog.
11:11You lose, dog.
11:13That's how you lose.
11:15That's a big way in how you lose.
11:17I mean, you already didn't score inside the red zone, which is crushing.
11:20And then you give up a quick seven the other way.
11:23And yet, they still had chances to come back and right the ship.
11:26They had so many more chances after that.
11:28And, you know, you think about just the first half mistakes, that one.
11:32And, you know, a questionable play call on fourth and two,
11:36and a block punt, and all the rest of it.
11:38And yet, you still were only down 13-7 at the half.
11:41Were you bothered not by the play call, fourth and two, at the goal line?
11:48But just that he went for it.
11:51Were you bothered that he went for it?
11:53I was not bothered.
11:55I was a little bit irked.
11:57Not quite annoyed.
11:59Surprised?
12:01Yeah, surprised.
12:03And for me, at that spot, where you're only down 3-0,
12:05you take the three.
12:07And you take the three, and you go out there.
12:09And, you know, it's a tie game, and you live to fight another day.
12:11I didn't know.
12:13I didn't feel like that was the level of desperation.
12:15But I know this.
12:17Analytics will tell you, fourth and goal from the two
12:20is one that you should go for.
12:22Now, if you're at the three, or the four,
12:25certainly at the five-yard line, they would have kicked it.
12:27So, you get to the two-yard line,
12:29and it becomes like analytics will tell you
12:31that you're supposed to go for it.
12:33It's almost like the world is challenging your manhood if you don't.
12:36It's just like automatic now.
12:37You just go for it.
12:39From the two.
12:41They're actually a little inside the two.
12:43Yeah.
12:45If you're at the four, do you go?
12:47If you're at the three, is it a tweener?
12:49That's where, like, analytics, I think,
12:51has somehow taken over.
12:53And maybe I'm a weirdo on this.
12:55I actually liked the play call.
12:57I thought it was going to work.
12:59And who's your boy?
13:01Is it Van Ginkle?
13:03Yep.
13:05He got a fingertip on it.
13:07Well, he just jumped up.
13:09He didn't get around him.
13:11He just jumped.
13:13It was well-timed.
13:15It was a good play.
13:17But Jawan Jennings, that ball was thrown to his chest,
13:19and he was going to catch a touchdown
13:21if Van Ginkle doesn't get there.
13:23Interesting you make that point.
13:25That was my view of it.
13:27Yes.
13:29My view was, I think, the previous play,
13:31or maybe it was two plays before,
13:33where he threw it to Iyuk,
13:35and Iyuk caught it, but he was out of bounds
13:37because Jawan Jennings was by himself
13:39at the five-yard line.
13:41If Brock Purdy just checks it down,
13:43I'm not saying he scores,
13:45but he was open.
13:47He waited too long.
13:49One man to beat.
13:51But he had to do it right away,
13:53and he didn't do it right away.
13:55Then it closed up.
13:57He was locked on Iyuk.
13:59If he just would have dumped it off,
14:01Jennings might have had a chance
14:03to wiggle, jiggle, and get down and score.
14:05And he's huge.
14:07That was three earlier in the drive
14:09from near midfield.
14:11Fantastic to Jennings.
14:13That was one of Brock's best throws of the game.
14:15In terms of decisions from Shanahan,
14:17what do you think?
14:19Mildly surprised,
14:21but I thought in the moment
14:23when it was set up fourth and three,
14:25that's another sort of thing
14:27that they do in the NFL now.
14:29If you're just out of field goal range,
14:31you go for it.
14:33Here's how I read those things.
14:35They were at the 45.
14:37He, at that moment in the game,
14:39really trusted his defense.
14:42And as it turned out later in the game,
14:44that burned him.
14:46That burned him.
14:48Like, you go for it.
14:50In fact, he even said,
14:52you're going for it at fourth and two
14:54near the goal line because he's like,
14:56if we don't get it,
14:58I love the chances of what's going to happen next.
15:00Two plays later,
15:02Justin Jeffries is doing the gritty.
15:04So Kyle thought that the defense
15:06was going to do it the way that it usually does.
15:08And it didn't.
15:10So, yeah, that's all the concert.
15:12The whole thing is a concert.
15:14The whole thing is always a concert.
15:16I know we love to pick out one person
15:18or two people and freak out on them.
15:20Whole thing's a concert,
15:22and it didn't work real well yesterday.
15:24It didn't work together.
15:26Yeah, before we go to the phones,
15:28just to respond to you, Grandy,
15:30I think that that fourth and three
15:32at the 45 is almost a no-brainer
15:34because you're too close to punt
15:36at the 45.
15:38Put that thing down at the nine-yard line and let's go.
15:40Well, you can, or you could do what Minnesota did.
15:42And you want to talk about breaks.
15:44The Minnesota punt team,
15:46where they had it downed,
15:48and then what's-his-face just stumbles
15:50into the end zone,
15:52and you get the ball back at the 20.
15:54You could do what Houston did, too,
15:56and just line up your garden-variety 60-yard field goal
15:58and kick that.
16:00No problem.
16:02It's crazy what kickers can do now.
16:04It's crazy.
16:06I don't know what the 50 yards was like.
16:08Dude, this is a long one.
16:10Guys, now, Fairbairn's lining up
16:12from 59 yards,
16:14and it's going through the middle of the goalpost.
16:16Chipshot.
16:18Like it's got 10 yards to spare.
16:20I joked about this last night.
16:22How many years away are we
16:24from you get the ball on the opening drive,
16:26they kick it into the end zone,
16:28all right, we go out to the 30.
16:30All right, ready?
16:32You go three and out.
16:34All right, kick team.
16:36Here comes a field goal kicker.
16:38Just line up for an 87-yarder.
16:40Boop!
16:42Three and out.
16:44Gain zero yards.
16:46Like that sounds ridiculous,
16:48but this idea,
16:50this 60-yard field goals,
16:52you never even used to try that.
16:54Dudes are booting it through
16:56with 10 yards to spare.
16:58It's like when the cowboy kicker is ridiculous.
17:00He's insane.
17:02Well, they use him a lot
17:04because they don't score touchdowns.
17:06It's like 58 yarder
17:08and it's like he's just kind of flipping it
17:10like a sand wedge.
17:12It's crazy.
17:14How about Dave and Fresno?
17:16Hi, Dave.
17:18Thanks for calling.
17:20What's up?
17:22Mr. Willard,
17:24you said earlier you don't want
17:26two sides of the same thing.
17:28You don't want on Tuesday after the Jets game
17:30we're the best team
17:32and then Monday, today,
17:34we're the worst team.
17:36But in the same breath,
17:38oh, Brock is a top-five quarterback
17:40because I tell you what they don't do
17:42with Lamar or Josh Allen
17:44or Patrick Mahomes or Burrow.
17:46If their running back is missing
17:48or player is missing,
17:50they're still going to point to the quarterback.
17:52So we can't look at Brock and say,
17:54oh, yeah, he's a top-five quarterback,
17:56but then give an excuse
17:58because you're missing the captain,
18:00which we all agree is a great player
18:02probably the biggest offensive weapon.
18:04But if you're a top-five quarterback,
18:06there's no excuse
18:08because you still have the greatest coach
18:10of all time, Shanahan.
18:12You still have all your other weapons there.
18:14Okay, I'm not saying they lost yesterday
18:16because of Brock.
18:18I'm just saying we need to be consistent
18:20with that if we're going to anoint him
18:22a top-five quarterback.
18:24But I would argue no one's doing that, Dave.
18:26Dave, Dave, you're putting words
18:28in our mouth on that one
18:30and maybe you're not talking directly to us.
18:32I've never called Brock Purdy
18:34a top-five quarterback.
18:36Brock, in my opinion, is good enough.
18:38I think he's really good.
18:40I don't think he's Patrick Mahomes,
18:42Josh Allen, or Lamar Jackson.
18:44I don't think he has to be
18:46in order to get paid.
18:48In fact, the top-five quarterbacks
18:50who are getting paid right now
18:52in the NFL are none of those guys.
18:54Dak Prescott, Jordan Love,
18:56and Trevor Lawrence
18:58are the top-paid quarterbacks in the game.
19:00I think Brock is certainly
19:02at least as good as those guys,
19:04if not better.
19:06I agree with that phrase, Dave.
19:08Same energy.
19:10Because a lot of people use that
19:12to be like, if you're going to say this,
19:14then you've got to say that over there.
19:16And I don't.
19:18I don't.
19:20I think the Niners are a lesser entity
19:22without Christian McCaffrey.
19:24I think they'd be even more
19:26a lesser entity without Brock Purdy.
19:28You know what I mean?
19:30Yeah, of course.
19:32He's their son of quarterback.
19:34Yeah, of course they'd be less without Brock.
19:36If Trevor Lawrence loses on Trevor,
19:38if Jordan Love loses on Jordan Love,
19:40with the Niners,
19:42it's like, well,
19:44they're missing the left tackle
19:46or the receiver's rusty.
19:48It's always an excuse.
19:50I like Brock.
19:52I think he's good enough to win with.
19:54And I'm not saying he's the reason we lost.
19:56I'm just saying,
19:58if we're going to treat him
20:00like one of the better quarterbacks,
20:02he's not without blame.
20:04And the last point,
20:06I was just going to say,
20:08people are upset.
20:10It's not that the season's over.
20:12I think we went into the game yesterday
20:14with the better team,
20:16with the better coach.
20:18And that was all the talk all offseason
20:20that this is still a great team
20:22and we have one of the premier coaches
20:24and they laid an egg.
20:26And that's why people are calling
20:28they're disappointed.
20:30It doesn't mean the season's over.
20:32It doesn't mean they're all bums.
20:34It's just that it was not something
20:36that they wanted to do.
20:38Dave, we got to cook, man.
20:40Thank you very much.
20:42You made your point and it's a fair one.
20:44Of course.
20:46Yeah, they laid an egg.
20:48You thought 17-0?
20:50Like if you're going to go,
20:52well, they've got the better roster,
20:54the better coach.
20:56Well, I could argue then that
20:58if that's all that you need,
21:00then you win all the games.
21:02I thought 5-0.
21:04I thought 5-0.
21:06I thought we were going to win next weekend.
21:08And then let's see who's healthy
21:10and what's going on after that.
21:12Sure.
21:14The Cardinal game looks a little bit more daunting.
21:16It looks a little bit more formidable than it did.
21:18And the Ram game looks a little bit,
21:20quote, easier than it did.
21:22But I'm still focused on yesterday
21:24before we get to the Ram game.
