00:00But some big news out of college football today, which is going to affect yet another
00:08conference.
00:10Good and bad news, depending on how you look at it.
00:12The good news comes for the Pac-12, as there is a report out there right now from Brett
00:18McMurphy that says that four schools are set to announce later today that they will depart
00:24the Mountain West.
00:25That's the bad news.
00:26The good news is the Pac-12 stays alive.
00:29So it depends on how you want to look at this.
00:31Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, and Fresno State will begin the 2026-27 season
00:41in the Pac-12.
00:42They would join Oregon State and Washington State, who are the only two schools left in
00:46the Big 12.
00:48Now there's a flip side to this story.
00:50That of course is the Mountain West.
00:53And Gloria Nevarez, who is the Mountain West commissioner, has her own thoughts on this
01:00development today.
01:01Here's what she had to say.
01:03All members will be held to the conference bylaws and policies should they elect to depart.
01:09The requirements of the scheduling agreement will apply to the Pac-12 should they admit
01:14the Mountain West members.
01:16Our board of directors is meeting to determine the next steps.
01:18The Mountain West has a proud 25-year history and will continue to thrive in the year ahead.
01:25Now there is an exit fee, folks, for each of these schools leaving, and this is a key
01:30number here because the Pac-12 probably going to have to pick up the dime here, $18 million
01:35with two years' notice.
01:37So will the schools pay this?
01:39Will the Pac-12 end up paying this?
01:40I mean, they have the money to do it, but needless to say, that's the next part of the
01:44story that we'll need to unpack before they move forward.
01:47All right, now to the NFL and the story in the National Football League still surrounding
01:51Tyreek Hill, who met with the media yesterday calling for the firing of one of the police
01:58officers that was involved in his detainment before their game this past Sunday against
02:05the Jacksonville Jaguars.
02:07Needless to say, he continues to discuss it and is not quite ready to move on, understandably
02:13so, a very emotional time for him.
02:16Here's what he said meeting with the media yesterday about the police officer.
02:19Your lawyer has come out and said that he's looking for the dismissal of the officer.
02:23Do you, what does that mean?
02:26Gone.
02:27So you want the officer to be-
02:30Gone, gone, gone, gone.
02:35He gotta go, man, cuz in that instant right there, not only did he do treat me bad, he
02:42also treated my teammates with disrespect.
02:46He had some crazy words towards them, and they ain't even do nothing.
02:51What did they do to you?
02:52They just walking on the sidewalk.
02:55So I don't know, bro.
02:58He gotta go, man.
03:00It's not too many times that cheaters say people gotta go, but you, what they say on
03:09Wild N Out, gone.
03:13Mm-mm, no comprende.
03:16All right.
03:19You knew I was gonna say something crazy.
03:22Yeah, we did know that something crazy would be said, and that was Tyreek Hill yesterday.
03:25Not a surprise there.
03:26All right, Hill is expected to suit up tonight, of course.
03:29The Dolphins will play the Bills, the odds right now, Miami minus two and a half, Buffalo
03:33has dominated Miami.
03:36In fact, Josh Allen's never lost on Thursday Night Football.
03:40Just to know, as they're on the road tonight, total 48 and a half, some rain expected for
03:45the early part of this game.
03:47Right now, it appears the Dolphins are very depleted at running back, Raheem Mostert is
03:52out of this game.
03:53We'll hear from Dr. Chow coming up on his injury in the SportsGrid sound off.
03:57Meanwhile, Devon Achain practiced, looks like he's gonna give it a shot tonight.
04:02If he can't go, you have Jalen Wright, you have Jeff Wilson Jr., so we'll keep an eye
04:07on who plays at running back for Miami.
04:09And warmups will be critical tonight around 6.30, 7 o'clock Eastern.
04:13The National Football League ratings just keep on getting stronger.
04:16They set another record.
04:17The NFL averaged 21 million viewers per game.
04:21It was the most watched week one on record.
04:24The league and Nielsen rating said that per game average on TV was up 12%.
04:28All told, 123 million people saw at least part of one game.
04:31That's the highest since 2019.
04:34And Joe Burrow supposedly has some sort of wrist injury, kind of funny that he was talking
04:39about this yesterday.
04:40I don't know if you saw this press conference, but he said it's not affecting his throws.
04:44And Burrow said that he's just fine.
04:45Meanwhile, the Browns put David Njoku on injured reserve, so he's gonna miss four games.
04:50Juan Thornhill is also gonna be out four games as well.
04:53They put them both on injured reserve yesterday.
04:55Meanwhile, Baltimore Ravens linebacker, how about this, Kyle Van Nooy, ripped into the
04:59Chiefs medical staff for a lack of urgency after he suffered an eye injury in Thursday's
05:04game, calling it unacceptable and unprofessional, professional.
05:09The Chiefs had no comment on the issue.
05:12Sharon Moore of the Michigan Wolverines has finally finalized his contract.
05:17Of course, this was going back and forth all offseason.
05:20Now it's a completed deal with the Wolverines.
05:21I know that's a little bit surprising.
05:23That's kind of the way that it's gone.
05:24He had signed a contract after coaching the first two games of the season without one.
05:28Reggie Bush, how about this, an attempted break in in his home in Encino, California.
05:35He says everyone is safe in a text message, but the LA Police Department said that someone
05:38broke a glass in his house, glass window, tried to break in, steal Reggie Bush's stuff.
05:43Tonight in college football, there is a game as well, Texas State minus one and a half
05:47against Arizona State, total of 60 and a half.
05:51And by the way, really good story coming out yesterday from Michigan State and Boston College
05:55coming up on September 21st.
05:57They're going to honor a hero from the tragedy on 9-11.
06:01That's coming up next weekend.
06:02Now, as I mentioned in Major League Baseball, get ready for history because folks, it appears
06:06to be coming even faster than we thought.
06:08Shohei Otani last night stole his 48th base and he also hit his 47th home run.
06:13No one in the history of baseball has ever gone 50-50.
06:16Otani plays over the next several days.
06:19I believe it's Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
06:21If he doesn't do it then, he's off Monday and then Otani's here in South Florida playing
06:27the Marlins for a few games.
06:28So we'll see if that ends up happening in my backyard.
06:30The Mets beat the Jays late, almost a no-hitter for Toronto and then all of a sudden the game
06:35broke out.
06:36Total for the game was seven and a half.
06:37Francisco Lindor hit a home run.
06:39Mets score six runs in the top of the ninth inning.
06:42Poor Blue Jays, can't get out of their own way this season.
06:45Francis Bowden, he's been pitching great for Toronto, but no no-hitter, no win and the
06:50team even lost in the game yesterday.
06:52All right, back to the American League East update we go.
06:55Jazz Chisholm Jr. ends up beating the Royals on a walk-off, fielder's choice in extra innings.
07:01And Tyler O'Neal hits a home run for the Red Sox to beat the Orioles, so now the Yankees
07:04are back to one and a half game lead in the American League East.
07:07And also Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Edwin Uceta, who hit Nick Castellanos a couple of
07:12days ago, has been suspended three games by Major League Baseball for hitting him.
07:16And Kevin Cash, the manager of the Rays, also suspended one game, although he will appeal
07:20it.
07:21Let's get to some sports betting revenue numbers.
07:23How about Maine?
07:24Let's start off there.
07:25They have two legal sportsbooks, DraftKings and Caesars.
07:28And sports revenue in terms of the money that they're making in the sportsbook, how about
07:31this?
07:32Drops 40%, very uncharacteristic, although in the summer you would expect these numbers
07:37to dip, maybe not as much.
07:38Aja Wilson broke the WNBA season scoring record, 86-75, pull-up jumper, 26 seconds left in
07:45the game, 941 points this season.
07:48She breaks the record held by Jewel Lloyd.
07:51And Aaliyah Edwards had 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Mystics continue their playoff push.
07:57They blew out the Chicago Sky.
07:59The final score in that game, 89-58.
08:03Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:06There's a funny line from a television show called Seinfeld back in the day, where one
08:12of the characters says, just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.
08:16But in this case, as we bring in Pat Evans, as it comes to sports betting in the state
08:20of Missouri, just when I thought we were in, they pull me back out.
08:23I mean, come on, Pat, what is going on here?
08:26Is this going to be on the ballot in November?
08:27Is it not going to be on the ballot?
08:28I just got done talking to somebody the other day about this.
08:31They said, you know, is sports betting going to be legal anywhere else in the United States?
08:34I'm like, maybe Missouri.
08:36What's going on here, man?
08:37Well, first of all, I mean, I'm really excited to talk about Missouri, but I really want
08:41you to have a segment soon to fully discuss, you know, the geographic similarities between
08:46Miami and New York.
08:48I really need a whole segment on that.
08:49So please schedule that in.
08:51But as for Missouri, you know, it is going to be on the ballot.
08:55We know this.
08:56We know that much.
08:57The ballot was finalized on Tuesday by the Secretary of State, and it's going to be on
09:03the ballot.
09:04So, you know, we know that.
09:06This opposition, though, is not surprising.
09:08I think, you know, we've talked about this throughout the summer, really, as the ballot
09:12petition was getting underway and getting the signatures, getting the signatures turned
09:16in, the certification.
09:17You know, we were told there was going to be some opposition at some point.
09:21That, of course, started with a lawsuit at the end of last month challenging the certification
09:27process.
09:28You know, I think we talked about it earlier this week.
09:30I watched a whole, you know, couple seven hours of the very boring law and order-esque
09:37situation where we were, you know, talking to signature experts and everything.
09:42And it turns out the judge ruled with the Secretary of State, said, you know, the certification
09:47process was all good.
09:48It's fine.
09:49It's okay.
09:50But as that ruling comes through, now there's a campaign that has popped up to oppose the
09:57sports betting ballot initiative.
09:59And we don't know much about it, just like we don't know much about behind, who was behind
10:04the lawsuit.
10:06It's just some political operatives in the state.
10:08We're trying to dig and see some, what we can find, who's going to be against this opposition.
10:15And they said it's a huge, they're going to bring together a huge coalition of people
10:18to oppose it.
10:19So we know that their issue on the website they have is all about the language and how
10:26it was written behind closed doors by out-of-state companies and the professional sports teams
10:31with loopholes and all that.
10:33And it won't actually bring any money to Missouri and to fund education.
10:38And we'll see if that's, you know, you know, we know that there's support, 50 percent in
10:44the latest poll for and 21 percent undecided.
10:47So it seems like it's a sure bet to pass at this point.
10:50Again, we'll have to watch it really closely on election day.
10:54That's the election I'll be watching, you know.
10:57And yeah, I mean, opposition, we'll see opposition ads.
11:01Speaking of ads, Winning for Missouri Education, the coalition that put this on the ballot,
11:06released their first ad with a Missouri teacher and mom talking about the benefits of how
11:11the tax money will go to the education in the state.
11:13So, you know, it's going to be one of those political ad battles in Missouri.
11:17You know, you see plenty of ads, political ads this time of year, and that's, they're
11:21just going to add to it.
11:22Yeah.
11:23And look, well, at least it's on the ballot.
11:25So we get to take that step forward and the opposition, we'll see how much they have to
11:29do with whether or not people vote yes or no.
11:32OK.
11:33Now, one discussion that has been very prominent in sports betting is in order to solve some
11:38of the problem gambling is to limit sports bettors.
11:41Now, naturally, the books don't want to do this, but it may be in the best interest of
11:46some people to know when it is too much to bet.
11:51What's going on here in Massachusetts?
11:52This is sort of surrounding a discussion in a roundtable to talk about whether or not
11:56they can implement this.
11:58Well, so what's happened in Massachusetts is the regulators, it's a very, you know,
12:03we talk about it all the time on the show, whether it's me or Mike or Jim or whoever
12:07was covering it at the time.
12:10They started talking about this at the beginning of the year, really.
12:12They said they've been receiving complaints from better saying they're being limited and
12:16they don't know why and and they they want to get to the bottom of it.
12:20They want some transparency.
12:21They want data from the operators.
12:23They want to know, you know, how these limits are set and and and all that.
12:28Well, the first meeting, I think it was in May.
12:31Only one operator showed up, Bally's, and the rest of the operators in the state didn't
12:35show up.
12:36They had said they wanted to take part, but they wanted it to be operators only.
12:40And there was a lot of privileged information that they wouldn't want to share widely.
12:44And, you know, so that happened.
12:47And there was just mostly industry people saying, you know, industry adjacent people
12:51talking about it and but no real operator input.
12:56So then months go by and now here we are yesterday.
12:59The Massachusetts Gaming Commission met for about three hours.
13:04First half was all eight operators in the state, including Fandle, DraftKings, Caesars,
13:09and MGM.
13:11And then the second half was, again, industry adjacent people talking about the issues of
13:16limiting.
13:19And really, it was pretty insightful from the operator point of view.
13:22I mean, they again, they kept some things back, but they tried to open up.
13:26They said it's a very small number of people who are limited.
13:30And it's really through a long review process of better behavior and things like that, that
13:38they kind of look at before they limit.
13:40Fandle said in 2023, it was less than 1% of all bets in Massachusetts reached the user
13:47limit, whatever the specific limit is.
13:50So it's, again, a very small portion.
13:52The Gaming Commission said, you know, they want more transparency.
13:56They're trying to work with it.
13:57They want to make sure casual bettors, because a lot of the operators are talking about how
14:02it's operators that take advantages against the sports books, and they find that behavior.
14:07And a lot of them said that it was often losing bettors.
14:11At the time they were limited, they were still loser bettors.
14:14They just figured it out from the behavior.
14:18Again, it's going to be a lengthy discussion at this point to see where we're at, or what
14:25the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will do.
14:27Again, they just want to protect the casual bettor who might get caught up in this.
14:31And again, it's probably a very small amount of people, but they want to make sure it's
14:35not happening and pushing them to the offshore market.
14:38That's something they said was very important to them, was keeping the transition to the
14:45open regulated market strong.
14:48And so we'll see what happens.
14:49I assume there's going to be another discussion because the Jordan Maynard, the interim chair,
14:55said, you know, this is going to be a long discussion, something they got to think carefully
14:58about and deliberate carefully.
15:00So we'll see.
15:02It is certainly something you see a lot of on sports betting Twitter, people saying they've
15:07been limited or being upset that they're limited.
15:10And so Massachusetts has been a trendsetter in a lot of ways tackling subjects like this.
15:15So we'll see what they do, if they do anything, and see if other states follow suit.
15:22Yep.
15:23Max bets conversation, something that could be a big story in 2025 as we move forward.
15:27All right.
15:28The numbers are in from betting on the Olympics.
15:30And lo and behold, here we go again.
15:32People are doing same game parlays at the Olympics.
15:35I mean, tell me this isn't true, Pat.
15:37Tell me.
15:38No, apparently it was.
15:40So Fando released their report on Paris Olympics betting, and it was up five times the amount
15:48as Tokyo in 2021.
15:51That's pretty significant, I would think.
15:53But I think that's kind of an overall trend in general.
15:55I mean, how much more did I watch?
15:58How much more did you watch, Craig, of the Olympics this year than the one four years,
16:02three years ago?
16:03However, the timeline works out now.
16:05It was a lot.
16:06You know, I watched a lot of Olympics this year, and I didn't in 2021.
16:10So it'll be kind of, it kind of goes hand in hand with that.
16:13To your point, the parlays were up a huge amount.
16:16They said it was specifically around basketball, especially, which isn't a big surprise with
16:21how fun it was to watch that Olympic team and Steph Curry finished that gold medal game.
16:25So I'm not surprised, and we'll see how much more grows in the next Olympics, especially
16:32with it being in the U.S.
16:34Yeah, and by the way, yeah, and by that time, maybe the state of California has sports betting
16:40as a possibility.
16:41That could be.
16:42I mean, yeah, it could be four years from now.
