00:00Greg Cosell was fantastic.
00:02Oh, incredible.
00:03Yeah.
00:04Although I don't know if he threw the haymaker that Nick Bosa threw at practice today.
00:11The haymaker?
00:12Well, I mean, it's compelling.
00:14Let's put it that way.
00:15So I'm ecstatic about that.
00:17Well, he was compelling last year when he said, well, we didn't really plan for that.
00:20Right.
00:21Mahomes in the zone keeper.
00:23I'm not going to say who didn't prepare us, but I think you can kind of figure that out, you guys.
00:27We have great energy.
00:29We just don't have a, you know, we don't have a defensive coordinator that I like.
00:34I can honestly say I'm sort of built for this.
00:36I can honestly say we weren't prepared for this.
00:38I can honestly say I missed camp.
00:40That also didn't help.
00:41Right.
00:42Whatever.
00:43No, it was a little different.
00:44A haymaker from Bosa?
00:45Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
00:46Maybe that's a little bit of a strong term.
00:47Okay.
00:48I mean, you decide.
00:49You decide.
00:50Check it out.
00:51Playing the Vikings this week.
00:52Hey, Nicky, what do you think?
00:55This week, I think we're playing a better, honestly, a better team.
01:00They're playing better football, it looks like.
01:04And they run the ball well, and we're going to have to be better in our techniques.
01:10We kind of got away with some things last week.
01:12So, yeah, we have to hone in and not pat ourselves on the back.
01:17Okay.
01:18This is my favorite quote of the year already.
01:20Sorry, Robert, but you're not very good.
01:23These guys better.
01:24Listen again and try to hear the moment that Nick realizes he's going to be the lead story
01:31on New York Sports Radio by the afternoon.
01:34Listen one more time.
01:36This week, I think we're playing a better, honestly, a better team.
01:41They're playing better football, it looks like.
01:45And they run the ball well, and we're going to have to be better in our techniques.
01:51We kind of got away with some things last week.
01:54So, yeah, we have to hone in and not pat ourselves on the back.
02:01Wow, this is tough.
02:03It's tough.
02:04This week, we're playing a better, like...
02:08They're playing better.
02:09They're playing...
02:10They won, Jets didn't.
02:11Team.
02:12Yeah.
02:13Better...
02:15You know what this reminds me of?
02:17It's tough.
02:20I've told you about this one.
02:21We've done it on the air before.
02:23My favorite moment like that in the history of sports media, when a player realizes he
02:28is about to step in the biggest pile of doo-doo, stops and goes the other way, is when Quinnen
02:33Williams was still in college with Alabama, and they were getting ready to play Oklahoma
02:38and Kyla Murray.
02:40And Quinnen is at the bowl game at those big media day...
02:45He's at the dais, and he's like, honestly, we don't think that Kyla Murray...
02:50And then he just stops.
02:52He's about to say...
02:53He just stops, and you can feel that the specter of Nick Bosa was on his right shoulder, and
02:59he just makes a noise.
03:01He's like, we don't think that Kyla Murray...
03:04And then they go, what did you want to say about Kyla Murray?
03:08And he goes, nah, I'm good.
03:10And that's the end of the conversation.
03:13It's just like, I'm out, I'm jumping out of the plane.
03:16And in this case, he's throwing shade at his former coach.
03:19And I'm sure he likes Salah, and he probably does think, as Greg Cosell added in our interview,
03:24that Minnesota, they do things differently.
03:27And coaching-wise, they're probably in a better spot than the Jets, especially their defensive
03:33approach.
03:34So Nick's right.
03:35You're going on the road.
03:36The spread, I believe, is six.
03:37You don't know if you're going to have McCaffrey or not.
03:39No road game is going to be an easy one, especially when you go to a place that the
03:43franchise hasn't won there since before Nick was born, before Grandy was born.
03:4832 years.
03:49And I know that's a franchise trend, and it has nothing to do with this year's team.
03:55But you lost to them last year in Minnesota.
03:58Yeah.
03:59I was going to say, I was going to call it a house of horrors, but I know it's a new house.
04:02Good call.
04:03Yeah.
04:04That was in the Dome.
04:05Yeah.
04:06The city has not been kind.
04:08And I do think that they might be talented.
04:11That's a big number on the road.
04:13Yeah.
04:14Week two.
04:15That's a very big number.
04:16And obviously, it says that what happened on Monday night calmed everybody's fears about
04:24the 49ers.
04:25All the things that you heard, oh, it was a Super Bowl hangover, and the holdout, and
04:29the hold in, and boy, it just doesn't feel...
04:31Oh, wait, never mind.
04:32That's what that spread says to me.
04:34But I don't know if I'm there yet.
04:37I don't mean that it matters about Super Bowl hangover, and hold ins, and hold outs.
04:41I just don't know if I'm ready to say, well, yeah, now the Niners are just going to go
04:47into cruise mode the same way they did for the first five weeks last week.
04:51And then what I also don't know is, like, is Nick reflecting something that's real,
04:57or have the 49ers just become really good at finding ways to not allow themselves to
05:03get complacent?
05:04Because...
05:05There's that, for sure.
05:06That felt easy on Monday night, to be honest with you.
05:09It did.
05:10And, you know, if you want to compare Minnesota to the Jets, Minnesota might be a little bit
05:14better.
05:15They might be a little bit worse.
05:16They're probably in the same overall category, but Minnesota played the Giants.
05:20And if you wanted to do a bottom four teams in the NFL, you have the Panthers and you
05:25have the Giants, and then we can have a debate about who the other two are.
05:28The Giant team is terrible.
05:29Yep, totally.
05:30And Minnesota handled them as they should, on the road, impressive win, and all the rest
05:34of it.
05:35But the 49ers, I think, have enough veterans and they do a good enough job of exactly what
05:41he just said.
05:42They're, like, finding ways to stay motivated.
05:45Minnesota beat you last year, and any road game is difficult, and you have your eyes
05:49on the ultimate prize, which is in February.
05:51But in the meantime, you have to go out there and handle your business, and it's a short
05:55week for San Francisco and travel, and Minnesota's a completely different team than what they
06:01were last year.
06:02Well, it's a totally different environment, also.
06:04The environment matters.
06:06Brian Flores is a really good defensive coordinator.
06:09Listen to what Baldy said about it this morning.
06:11Well, they saw him last year.
06:13Brian Flores is very talented.
06:15They have a brand new defensive line.
06:17I mean, all four starters are new, and they cause all kinds of problems.
06:23Daniel Jones, to the offensive line, nobody played well in New York.
06:26Daniel Jones walked into a lot of sacks that just aren't necessary.
06:30He didn't see the field well.
06:32So Brian Flores is going to give you as many different looks as anybody in this whole business
06:36right now.
06:37So you've got to be really patient.
06:38Kyle's going to study it real hard.
06:40I think you can learn a lot from their performance in Minnesota a year ago, because the secondary
06:45is pretty much the same from a year ago.
06:48And so I think the fact that there's a blueprint for what Brian likes to do from how they played
06:53him a year ago can help game plan for this year.
06:57All right.
06:58So that's the thought going into this one.
07:01And I do think that the 49ers, I don't think they're going to make it up.
07:04It's not like they're that much better than the rest of the NFL, head and shoulders or
07:08anything like that.
07:09But I think this is something that veteran groups do.
07:12And the 49ers now qualify as that.
07:15They do have some young pieces that are getting put in there.
07:18They've got some new players here and there.
07:20And I think that that's what the standard bearing voices in the locker room are going
07:24to do right now, which is don't get excited.
07:26I know.
07:27It was Monday night.
07:28We looked awesome.
07:29Don't start patting yourself on the back because there's a thousand miles to go here.
07:34And Christian McCaffrey hasn't played football yet.
07:36And this is a team that pretty much handled our offense last year.
07:40And I'm looking at the numbers.
07:41McCaffrey 15 carries for 45 yards.
07:44He did have a touchdown in the game against Minnesota Brock Purdy through two interceptions.
07:49And it was a game that the Niners trailed most of the way and they could never get on
07:53top and get over the hump in part because Kirk Cousins refused to get off the field.
07:57So this is a team that's totally different from last year offensively, but on defense,
08:02they have the same mentality and they have a good defensive minded defensive coordinator.
08:07And speaking of this, this camp that worried everybody, right?
08:11Oh, the Niners, the vibe is off.
08:15Do you know what?
08:16Maybe it wasn't.
08:18Maybe none of us are on the team and we have no idea exactly how it was going because I
08:24also thought this, this might've been the number one thing I was thinking about on Monday
08:29night while watching that football game.
08:32The 49ers, like all teams in the NFL, you come out, you start your season and you're
08:38like, oh, you got some cobwebs.
08:41They snapped out of that as fast as any team that I watched.
08:46Maybe the Saints and Vikings, and for reasons that you already detailed, that was their
08:52opponent as much as anything else.
08:55But the 49ers snapped out and cleared the cobwebs and looked like they were playing at a pretty
09:01high level pretty fast.
09:03So how do you do that when you have a quote unquote crappy camp?
09:08Listen to what Debo Samuel said about the way they started.
09:11Sure.
09:12Especially coming off the Super Bowl loss.
09:14I think a lot of us use that as motivation to come in and kind of put it behind us and
09:18not look back at what happened, but kind of like move forward and just control the things
09:22that we can do for it like day to day and week to weekend.
09:24I just think everybody was just trying to make their crap every day.
09:27So Debo is speaking to basically a seriousness in camp.
09:32And I wonder if that translated to the media because we are like often the group that you're
09:38there, you're talking to people, you're watching it, and maybe it didn't look like the party
09:44that it's looked like before.
09:46And we translated that as, well, Brandon's not here and Christian's not playing and Trent's
09:51not here and they lost the Super Bowl.
09:53Oh, they just don't feel well.
09:55And Debo's like, no, it's because our nose is to the damn grindstone because we're so
10:01ticked off about what happened last year.
10:03Yeah.
10:04And Trent Williams even said a similar thing.
10:06I heard a quote yesterday.
10:07One of our shows was playing at how when he finally got into camp, he came in and it wasn't
10:12anybody joking around.
10:13I mean, no towel snap in, no pranks and no hijinks.
10:16It was business.
10:17And he was looking at the rookies and thinking, these guys who've been here before he was
10:21this year are already like head down, like Debo saying, nose to the grindstone and like
10:27setting about becoming professional players and really getting ready for the season, knowing
10:32full well that his team's in the Super Bowl window.
10:35The comments you are referring to.
10:38You got them?
10:39Sounded a little bit like this.
10:41I walked in.
10:42I'm like, damn, everybody is like laser focus.
10:45Everybody flying around.
10:46It's like not a lot of joking going on.
10:48It's like we've got a lot of new players in the locker room.
10:51It's already playing at San Francisco, you know, at what we expect around here.
10:55So, you know, I looked at all the young guys and the draft and just like, damn, you know,
11:01obviously we had a good roster last year.
11:03I didn't really see.
11:04I didn't know that they could improve it.
11:06But I mean, in my opinion, we improve.
11:08And those guys are playing their best.
11:10Okay.
11:11That came right after the game on Monday night.
11:12Yeah.
11:13He says it a lot better than I did.
11:14My stammered through it.
11:16Yeah.
11:17You got the idea.
11:18I added the towel snapping and the hijinks because that's what I do.
11:21That's why I liked yours.
11:22But it's all business, you know, and that's that's where you get.
11:25And it's hard to do it week in and week out.
11:27But this is the first road trip.
11:29So, you know, everybody, rookies and stuff is your first time going to a city.
11:33And Minnesota is going to be all revved up for their team.
11:36That's 1-0.
11:37And it's a new experience for the younger players.
11:39You ever struck by how stupid we all are?
11:41All the time.
11:42Okay.
11:43I mean, I try to remember what I don't know
11:46because a lot of times I get wrapped up in what I do know.
11:49And you put more import on what you do know
11:52as opposed to putting that same energy into what you don't know.
11:55Yeah.
11:56Like, I think that's very well said.
11:58Like, who cares what you don't know as long as you admit it.
12:00Like, it took me, and that was a while, like, that's being in your 20s
12:04is you don't know the power of that phrase.
12:07I don't know.
12:08Exactly.
12:09Like, it's okay.
12:10It's okay to say I'm sorry.
12:11It's okay to say I was wrong.
12:13It's okay to say I don't know because there's tons of stuff I don't know.
12:17I'm wrong probably, like, more often than a broken clock.
12:21You know what I mean?
12:22And, like, yeah.
12:24And, Dibs, I'm sorry.
12:26I don't even know why, but I probably did something at some point.
12:29No, it's all right.
12:30Apology not accepted.
12:31Those are powerful phrases, though.
12:33They are.
12:35The reason that just popped into my head is I'm having one of these moments
12:40where I'm just laughing at all of us, me, you, definitely Lucas,
12:48Grandy, every caller we've had the last six weeks of our lives
12:55have been worrying and talking about how the vibe was off
13:02and hangovers and predicting that things will not go as expected.
13:07And, obviously, those predictions aren't wrong yet.
13:10They're just 1 and 0.
13:12But do you notice how quickly we went from that to,
13:17well, this is the best roster they've ever had.
13:21How quickly did we go from, oh, no, this is last dance, hangover,
13:29vibes off, hold in, hold out.
13:31How quickly one game, I think this is the best roster
13:35that Kyle Shanahan has ever had.
13:37I mean, and not just people saying it, like Trent Williams saying it.
13:43That's funny.
13:44That's funny to me.
13:45Well, it's the way it works in this league.
13:47And if they go out Sunday and they lay an egg,
13:50let's say the game goes exactly like it did last year,
13:53except this time it's Sam Darnold.
13:55Sam Darnold.
13:56I knew that was coming.
13:57I couldn't help it.
13:58370 yards or whatever.
13:59And he looks like the next great quarterback.
14:02And you end up with three turnovers.
14:04And you lose to Minnesota again.
14:06Well, then come Monday, Roxters, Millions,
14:09and everything else we talk about, it's going to sound different.
14:11And, you know, there will be people saying, well, this Niner team is overrated.
14:15The Jets aren't that good.
14:16And Minnesota took it to you.
14:18They're overrated.
14:19So everything changes week to week in this business, in this league.
14:23Right.
14:24I would say that right now the optimism is not just baked into how the 49ers
14:30looked, but now the outlook that you have, which has clearly changed.
14:36I mean, even from 4 o'clock on Monday.
14:39What is it right now?
14:40Almost 4 o'clock on Wednesday.
14:42It was almost exactly 48 hours ago that what happened.
14:45Grandy hit the little pshew.
14:48Breaking news.
14:49Christian's out.
14:50That's right.
14:51That was 48 hours ago almost to the mark.
14:53Feels like a week ago.
14:54Exactly.
14:5548 hours ago we get that news.
14:57And the party that's cruising around Levi's Stadium all of a sudden has rain
15:02falling on it.
15:03And now look at how we feel about it now.
15:06I look at this roster that so many are calling the best that the Niners have
15:11had.
15:12I look at a dominant performance in a primetime game against a supposedly
15:16good team.
15:17And I think to myself, this team might acquire Christian McCaffrey.
15:22It might acquire 50% of Brandon Ayuk.
15:26It might acquire Tylenol Hufanga.
15:30You're going to make acquisitions on this team that are already baked in, and it
15:35already looks like it has the chance at least to perform at a very high and
15:40balanced level.
15:42It should.
15:43And that's assuming you don't lose anybody else along the way because in NFL
15:47season, everyone talks about it being a marathon.
15:50Part of that is enduring injuries and getting guys healthy and getting guys
15:53back.
15:54And Greenlawn, Hufanga, and Ricky Pearsall, for crying out loud, who hopefully
15:58is ready to go for Week 5.
16:00This team will be forever changing as the season goes on, but you take it one
16:04weekend and you can't help but get excited.
16:07Even Captain Stingy back there, Grandy, with his grades, he's given out A's and
16:12A-minuses and B-pluses.
16:14And deservedly so.
16:16Captain Stingy?
16:18Stingisaurus Rex is what I was going to go with because we're in a dinosaur
16:21space right now.
16:22That was my prediction.
16:23I thought that you were going to be really, really tough on the 49ers.
16:27Well, he couldn't.
16:29Even Dr. Negatron in there doesn't have the bandwidth to nitpick and give a
16:35position group a C.
16:37He couldn't.
16:38No.
16:39I like Dr. Negatron, probably my favorite.
16:41Was there even a player?
16:43McKibbitz?
16:45Campbell?
16:46Was there a player?
16:47Lucas kind of bullied me into asking Greg Cosell about Devondre Campbell.
16:51And Greg was like, no, he's going to be fine.
16:53So all of the Niner fans who want to nitpick on somebody, it's Devondre
16:57Campbell and get over it.
16:59There's a chance that Greg thinks Devondre Campbell is going to be fine.
17:02There's a chance he's like, dude, I didn't know they were going to ask me
17:05about Devondre Campbell.
17:07Oh, he was ready for it.
17:08I mean, he's Greg.
17:09He's ready.
17:10But do you ever think about Greg Cosell's week?
17:14What happens?
17:15Well, he watches every play from every game.
17:17Right, but you don't have to just watch more than twice.
17:20Right.
17:21Like, how much film are you watching to where you just pick up the phone and
17:25be like, ask me anything?
17:26You're like, all right, what about the third linebacker on the Bills?
17:29Well, let me tell you what happened.
17:30Here you go.
17:31And he's just like, what is happening each week?
17:34How much football does he watch?
17:36It's crazy.
17:37It's crazy.
17:38He's got to watch.
17:39I wonder how many of these he does.
17:41Probably not 32.
17:42No.
17:43So I'm sure there are teams that he drills down on a little bit more closely
17:46and then their opponent and their previous opponent.
17:49Well, that's the thing.
17:50And then their opponent's opponent.
17:51You don't know where, but he doesn't know where.
17:52Like, I want to let everyone know that Greg doesn't know where that
17:54conversation's going to go.
17:56We do not prompt him.
17:58No.
17:59Nobody's texting him.
18:00They're going to ask you about Brandon Ayuk.
18:01Like, it's just dude talk.
18:03And we start asking stuff.
18:05And he can answer anything about every player.
18:08Depressive.
18:09Devondre Campbell.
18:12Come on.
18:13Come on.
18:14That's a lot of people.
18:16This guy's supposed to have memorized.
18:18I considered it.
18:19I considered.
18:20But it's only week two.
18:22So I didn't do it yet.
18:23I might do this later in the year.
18:24I considered asking him what went wrong for the 49er defense in their game
18:29against Minnesota last year.
18:31He probably would have been able to answer the question.
18:34Probably just from memory.
18:36No doubt.
18:37He's got that kind of memory.
18:38So, yeah, Devondre Campbell.
18:40Greg says, go ahead and rest easy, 49er fans.
18:44He's going to be just fine.
18:45And the length that he was talking about.
18:47The length that linebacker.
18:49By the time we get to December or even Thanksgiving,
18:52that might be Dre Greenlaw.
18:54Young Dee Winters in the interim.
18:56Dee Winters.
18:57Yeah.
18:58This team's going to acquire a bunch of people.
19:01Right.
19:02And just watching them on defense and, you know,
19:04Greg pointing out how much they played nickel defense,
19:08the base with five in the secondary.
19:10Three out of every four snaps was in that base.
19:13And then you start to think about what happens when Dre Greenlaw does come
19:16back and you have your four down linemen and it's Fred and Dre
19:20and then it's five guys in coverage.
19:22That defense is going to be fun to watch.
19:24Did you hear what Brandon Iyuk said today?
19:26Missed it.
19:27Check it out.
19:29I think after the game, I didn't watch the film until this morning.
19:32I was a little bit scared to watch it, but not as bad as I thought.
19:37You were scared to watch it?
19:38I was scared to watch it.
19:39Did it just not feel right?
19:41No.
19:43Okay.
19:44Just watched the film today.
19:46Was scared to watch it.
19:48Said it didn't look as bad as he thought it would, but no.
19:53Things did not feel right out there.
19:55I can imagine.
19:57I wonder why.
19:58Well, you go from the Super Bowl loss to a instant TikTok
20:03and a sullen face in the exit interviews and everything that took
20:07place over the summer.
20:08I don't need to enunciate all of the things that we know that he
20:12went through.
20:13And then you finally signed, you get a couple of practices.
20:15Boom.
20:16Monday Night Football.
20:17Go play.
20:18Go make plays, Brandon.
20:19On a handful of targets.
20:21Go ahead and make sure you're perfect or else.
20:23And so all the pressure and all of the buildup in the off season,
20:27you finally get to play and boop.
20:29And then boop.
20:31Come on, man.
20:32I mean, like, look, we're so past the point of wanting to belabor this
20:36issue.
20:37But at the same time, like, I'm giving 49er fans open invitation to just
20:43be like, just shake your head.
20:46You're allowed to shake your head on this one.
20:48It's fine.
20:49SMH.
20:50They're fine.
20:51Everything's fine.
20:52But yeah, SMH.
20:55Like, come on, man.
20:57And all I can hope for at this point, because it is, it's over.
21:00It's in the past.
21:01I really hope that a lesson was learned.
21:04I really do.
21:06Camp matters.
21:08Like, I don't want the, well, it's not just camp matters because Trent
21:11Williams didn't go to camp and he looked fantastic.
21:14And Christian McCaffrey didn't have camp.
21:16We're all hoping that he's back.
21:18Again, it's not so much what happened, it's the way it happened.
21:22I just hope, and I don't even mean that the lesson is only learned by
21:25Brandon.
21:27Everybody.
21:28Everybody.
21:29Because remember, we were talking about this, like, oh, this is the way
21:32players are going to do it with the Niners now.
21:34Or all teams.
21:35Just wait and push it and push it and push it.
21:38Push it all the way to the end.
21:39You'll get more money.
21:40You'll get more money.
21:41Blake Snell, push it.
21:42Push it.
21:43We're going to get more money.
21:44Dude, there's a damn cost.
21:46There's a cost to negotiating that way.
21:49I hope agents are watching.
21:51This is pointless.
21:53There's no need.
21:55There is absolutely nothing good that comes from I'm going to get 17 more
22:00cents and blow up the first quarter of my season.
22:03Probably was more than 17 cents.
22:05I don't think it was anything.
22:07Well, if they were offering him 26 back in March, then he got more than 17
22:11cents extra.
22:12But he got that offered at the beginning of camp.
22:14This is all well documented.
22:16And the dude was about 10 seconds away from being a stealer.
22:19Like, this was not a good experience.
22:21He was at camp.
22:24Come on, man.
22:25Come on, man.
22:26Come on, dog.
22:27He's just there so he doesn't get fined.
22:28Yeah.
22:29And they say they don't want me.
22:30Kyle Shanahan was talking about it again today.
22:32Remember the Jay Glazer story of everybody's blowing whistles and calling
22:36people and screaming and yelling and running around in the facility because
22:39like, don't trade with the stealers.
22:40Hold on.
22:41Hold on.
22:42So apparently the story was Kyle Shanahan had to run upstairs because they
22:47weren't taking his call.
22:49And he wanted to tell them to stop.
22:51Brandon's ready to sign.
22:53So he talked about why he ran up the stairs.
22:56I had to sprint because I had a team meeting at 8.30.
22:58And I was getting ready for my team meeting.
23:00Brandon just randomly walked in and talked to me at 8.15.
23:03Very Brandon-like to pick that type of time because I was trying to get
23:06ready for something else.
23:08Ten minutes into talking to him, I realized we need to talk a little bit
23:10more when the meeting was over.
23:12Meetings can go a while and stuff.
23:13And I knew we were in discussions a lot with Pittsburgh.
23:15So I actually called up to John and he didn't answer.
23:18Picked up on the first ring.
23:20So I just wanted to make sure I wasn't on the other line making any trades.
23:23So I ran up there and just said, hold on.
23:26Let's talk after this meeting.
23:28Did you have to barge in?
23:30No.
23:31No.
23:32I'm not going to make it more dramatic than it already is.
23:34I love that he's like this.
23:37It's very like Brandon to just walk in and start bringing this up 15 minutes
23:41before I'm supposed to be doing something else.
23:43Pretty funny.
23:44Well, and also, like a lot of the reports that we heard, they were true.
23:49Like Kyle.
23:50They were close.
23:51And Kyle gets annoyed sometimes by Brandon Ayuk.
23:54No doubt.
23:55And you just heard it right there.
23:57It was like so much, you know, it's such a Brandon thing to do.
23:59Coming right before my meeting.
24:01Yeah.
