Transcript
00:00all the crews now lining up so thanks a million to David Hussie there who joined
00:04me for a good few races enjoy you're finished your racing now so enjoy the
00:10afternoon
00:15so here we can see the start list of the final race the final a final of the mix
00:23double skulls 18 crews lining up this no doubt is going to be a very exciting
00:32race here as well we have a lot of returners from last year we can see
00:37there in the middle of the field Claire Jameson and Charles Cousins they were
00:42third last year the French crew Franco for finishing second we don't have the
00:48world champions from last year's that was Ireland
00:50Monica Dukakis and Ronan Byrne they didn't come to compete this year but
00:55Monica won the women's solo earlier on
01:02so a couple of minutes now away from the start of this race and I am delighted to
01:08be joined here final guest of the day
01:14welcome thank you for joining me I believe you're involved in running this
01:21whole event I am I am part of the organizing committee my name is
01:27Margarita Braga and I'm officially the beach master but I'm now known as the
01:33beach boss beach boss and here you are going to be bossing it on the cut in the
01:37commentary box up here yeah taking a break from down on the beach and I'm
01:42happy to be here with you excellent so how has it been for you the particularly
01:46today now particularly with the a finals how has everything gone it's going really
01:51well it's you know it's been a few days of just training and getting to know the
01:57the teams coming on and off the water each and every day and so a little bit
02:04of a pivot in the schedule that we had to make due to the weather upcoming
02:09tomorrow but really excited to see the crews continuing to you know keep really
02:15positive vibes helping each other out and yeah just having a lot of fun on the
02:21beach I feel like there's a lot of fun like we can hear the music pumping we
02:25can hear everyone having fun so it's it's such always a great atmosphere at
02:30the Coastal Rowing Championships and the Beach Prince which we will see next
02:35weekend so just about over a minute to go to the start the final of the mixed
02:40double skulls the final a final of the day conditions pretty similar here now
02:46definitely like the sky is covered in clouds now at this point so it's
02:49definitely gotten a bit cooler but we still have that wind blowing on to us at
02:54the moment we have the 18 crews lining up everyone seems to have their space
02:59yeah have you what have you thought have you watched many of the starts today
03:03well I've been down on the beach permanently day after day so I haven't
03:09necessarily seen this aerial view I've seen the lateral view and so it is an
03:15interesting perspective to finally see it on on a screen I know it is kind of I
03:20think complicated and can almost be overwhelming for the for the rowers
03:24because there isn't necessarily a line and so that you know you're you're
03:30dealing with waves you're dealing with maybe oars getting a little too close to
03:36each other with the folks right beside you so a lot going on there is
03:41absolutely a lot going on and you can see some crews having to back up there
03:45away from the start line we were speaking about in the last race the men's
03:50quad Spain 05 they were right up on the line we weren't sure if they crossed it
03:53or not but it served them well because they got out ahead into that leading
03:57pack so we can see a few of the boats getting quite close here now we're into
04:01the final minute so just one ball left there on the boat so everyone gearing up
04:07and here we go go there was no time wasted there from you know so looking
04:15across the field I think everyone is all pretty clean no stoppages no clashes
04:21right now but obviously that can change yep definitely so a few crews that we
04:26are going to be watching here we saw the heats earlier definitely New Zealand
04:30one and two we had such a great time commentating on them New Zealand 01
04:36Matthew Dunham and Jackie Kittle they finished second to New Zealand or to
04:39Joseph Sullivan the Olympian and Kristen Frode who won it their heat so they're
04:44going to be looking to get up on the podium here today
04:49Oh interesting you can see some crews already getting in front of other ones
04:56yeah we've actually seen the last few races here that those leading both seem
05:01to be over on the right-hand side of the picture as we are looking at them and
05:05it's been very interesting to see they seem to I'm not sure they've obviously
05:09been watching the races and have picked their line and so they're studying the
05:13course exactly yeah exactly that's very very smart yeah so it looks like it is
05:19Monaco 01 who are off to that flyer of a start ahead of New Zealand one
05:25amazing pictures here Ukraine one there I'm sure they have a lot of motivation
05:30after seeing the men's quad win the last race there then Italy 02 back and forth
05:35but definitely Monaco here looking very strong as they pull out into the lead of
05:40this race yeah and very interesting that some of the the boats in third it seems
05:46Ukraine is almost in the wake of Monaco but still going very very strong yeah we
05:52spoke about that how like you don't necessarily want to be behind you want
05:56to be in the leading pack because otherwise you're getting caught in the
05:59mess from other boats but it doesn't seem to be slowing down these crews too
06:03much at the moment so we have Quentin Antogonelli and Umbra
06:07Shivani Gaia of Monaco one they're in the lead Ukraine moving up into second
06:14but if you watch over the right-hand side of the course you can see the big
06:17wash here happening and it is Ukraine getting caught up in that that is
06:21allowing New Zealand one which is Matthew Donham and Jackie Kittle to move
06:26themselves in to that second position yeah yeah look at this here now we're
06:33seeing that wash we're seeing that big bounce here Monaco one though racing 38
06:38strokes per minute they have not slowed down one that is quite aggressive yeah
06:43yeah it's still early stage in this race I'm not sure will they be able to
06:46maintain that all the way around definitely so back and forth here
06:52between New Zealand or one and Ukraine or one Italy or two then that is Annalisa
06:58Cozzernini so much experience from her over the last few years in coastal
07:02rowing she is joined by Andrea Serafino they're currently in fourth but still
07:06very much in touching distance of podium position at this stage then two Spanish
07:11crews along with New Zealand or two that is Joseph Sullivan and Kristin Frode but
07:17looking here now New Zealand or one here Jackie and Matt looking very strong here
07:23currently in third position but right up alongside Ukraine yeah and there seems
07:26to be quite a fight for that kind of fifth fourth position the places keep
07:32bouncing up and down it does in it quite a tight race here you can see three
07:37crews neck at neck-to-neck now we're starting to approach we're about 300 or
07:44so meters off that first Marco so people are gonna have to start looking over
07:48their shoulders picking their line because it's gonna look as you said it's
07:52very tight there in it that kind of third fourth fifth even sixth positions
07:57there at the moment Monaco just doing all they can to stay ahead at this stage
08:01of the race and they're doing a pretty good job of it yes they are yeah looks
08:04like a New Zealand where that's a great shot of them right here so smooth
08:11because you often see in these conditions you know it's hard to row as
08:15smooth as this oh yes super here so experienced so that is 1k done of this
08:20four-kilometer race then we have I think New Zealand have dropped off the
08:28GPS but they are still in the leading pack in New Zealand or one and Ukraine
08:34are still holding on to second position things swapping around here at Great
08:40Britain so that is Charles Cousins and Claire Jemison now moving in towards
08:45those leading boats as well they're medalists from last year finishing third
08:50they're still within touching distance here now as well so weather conditions
08:59it's obviously gotten a bit cooler in the last few hours yeah it was pretty I
09:04would say calm this morning relative to the last couple days of training and the
09:11races that we started earlier but I've seen a little bit of a pickup in in the
09:18waves this afternoon but definitely not stopping our crews that are out there
09:22right now absolutely not they're just coming up to that first earning marker
09:26now it's getting very tight here now up and not leaving a pack Ukraine Italy to
09:32have moved up here as well Monaco Monaco falling back so I'm not sure did they go
09:37off too hard here they're just moving back down the field a little bit yeah so
09:46just have you look at there our GPS keeps kind of moving around the place
09:51it's Monaco from Ukraine New Zealand one are still in that leading pack as well
09:57Italy two are there back and forth here now what every stroke positions are
10:02changing yeah and it was kind of interesting to see a couple crews take
10:06that turn maybe a little too tight and clip their oars on that buoy which
10:12definitely you want to keep a tight line but you don't want to hit the buoy and
10:17slow you right down and just also mentally get you out of your rhythm and
10:22especially when you're in a double and you're wanting to stay synchronized with
10:26your with your partner absolutely because you get nearly a bit of a shock
10:29if you do hit it if it is when it comes out of nowhere we're looking down at the
10:33New Zealand crew here Jackie Kittle and Matthew Dunham they've moved themselves
10:36back into second position now ahead of Ukraine Jackie finished fourth at the
10:41Olympics this year and the lightweight women's double here she is in the coastal
10:46boat she won the beach sprint last year here with Matt this crew in the mixed
10:50double so we'll be seeing them racing again next weekend here in Genoa they're
10:56holding on to second now starting to move away a little bit from Ukraine who
10:59are back in third and then it looks like it is Italy to in fourth position
11:06but they're in actually a really good position Ukraine and New Zealand's
11:09usually coming up on top of each other here now not sure if that was a mistake
11:12by someone but they don't want to what happened what we saw in the last race
11:16there was so much clashing went on and medals because of it I heard the
11:21aftermath of that on the beach
11:30unfortunately and it's interesting when you can when you know a few languages
11:37inside scoop of what they're saying in their own languages yeah so things
11:44changing slightly here again it is still Monaco holding on to the lead thereafter
11:48having a super first quarter of this race at this stage Ukraine now after
11:55moving up into second just ahead of New Zealand and one they're currently in
12:02third Italy to then are in that fourth position so they keep going back and
12:07forth between third and fourth Great Britain then Charles Cousins and Claire
12:12Jemisin still in that fifth position New Zealand or to Joseph Sullivan and
12:17Kristen Ford I suppose we may have thought they would have been up closer
12:20to New Zealand one and after having a blistering heat earlier on but they're
12:25still in sixth position and there's not a huge amount of distance at the moment
12:28between those kind of top six seven eight boats so Monaco still going 37
12:35strokes per minute they let it go down no definitely so here we go second
12:41turning marker this is always interesting so Ukraine on the inside
12:46line New Zealand having to go around the outside Ukraine have come to a complete
12:50dead stop here oh no they don't want to create a collision there Ukraine look
12:57like they're out I can't I can only see three hours in that boat shoot so
13:02Ukraine ah so unfortunate looks like they lost an oar in that stage up to the
13:09second turning marker that is so unfortunate we're seeing another
13:13little bit of a collision there yep this is what happens in the finals when
13:18racing gets really really close so what has happened now is Italy to have moved
13:22up into second position all disaster for Ukraine it actually looks like the blade
13:31is completely gone off but I don't see the oar yeah oh so unfortunate for
13:39Ukraine there but let's go back to the action we're well over halfway now in
13:43this four kilometer race Monaco still keeping that speed up keeping that rate
13:47up Italy to have seen an opportunity though and they have moved themselves
13:51in to a second position and New Zealand though right up alongside them so this
13:57is going to be another battle to watch because the closer you are to someone
14:01here which we can see between New Zealand and Italy the more danger there
14:04is at the turns yeah definitely I'm looking at the the bow man or woman and
14:12just seeing how much and how often they look over their shoulders because
14:16definitely you you want to have a better line and know where you are against your
14:21competitors but that can also slow you down and get you out of focus so it's
14:26it's interesting to see the the tactics that these crews are doing yeah we can
14:32see actually today we're they're doing an awful lot of looking around but I
14:36think they have to because just the way the way the water is at the moment the
14:39bow just keeps getting pushed in different directions so you can be
14:42thrown off course so easily the top three crews here now beautiful scenes
14:48with the big ship in the background here Monaco still leading it out but Italy
14:55to a New Zealand or this is gonna be close they're up on top of each other
14:59and the interesting part of this race versus you know traditional head races
15:04when you have you when you're about to pass someone the up the the passing boat
15:11has to actually go around the the other person no one has to give way so it's
15:19New Zealand getting stuck up on that turn it has allowed Italy to to move up
15:23but they're coming straight into there coming Monica and they've hit Monica
15:28strokes oars New Zealand are coming New Zealand are moving back in we knew that
15:35was gonna be close and you had just said about how close they come into each
15:39other around the turns and yes this is the problem you can very easily cause
15:45interference and slow yourselves down yeah it did seem that New Zealand was
15:50making a pretty aggressive push there when they were right behind Monaco so
15:56that collision between Italy and Monaco has given New Zealand a second chance
16:01but maybe we should stop talking we're jinxing it as it goes but this is this
16:10is really interesting to watch oh this is exciting this is what we love about
16:14coaster rowing so New Zealand have put themselves back into second position
16:17position now ahead of Italy too but I feel like the fun is not over yet
16:21because we have a lot of turning markers to get around here to the finish line
16:25we have about 1,200 meters to go or so but great races back the field here now
16:32as well Great Britain still holding on to fifth New Zealand to in that sixth
16:35position we have France of force we don't know one of the birds there was
16:40Sweden Spain or two they're all coming in on top of each other there on those
16:44markers so it's up to Monaco now they've held that lead for the whole race so far
16:54it's so it's up to them and not to lose it I wonder if their stroke rate is still
16:58up as much as it was I mean at this point it must be pure adrenaline and
17:03they have to hang on for another kilometer yes we can see actually there
17:07there was a picture of Charles Cousins and Claire Jemison of Great Britain's
17:10starting to put on a bit of a push here now they've upped their rate they're up
17:14at that 35 36 strokes per minute and in fact they have moved themselves up into
17:18fourth position they can see there is a metal contention there they're not too
17:23far away at all from those leading boats but this is super to see this is
17:28gonna get interesting because we're gonna come into another few markers New
17:30Zealand coming right up alongside no washing of oars here let's see what
17:37Italy to do here now New Zealand taking years their chance I think they were
17:43squeezed too much here now can really Britain take advantage of this
17:49so that was a super crash I think we're gonna see it again in slow motion here
17:56because things that keep changing here's a Monaco on the left-hand side New
18:01Zealand coming right up onto their blades staying so close Italy tubing
18:06force then to move outside and to stop rowing so that they avoid a collision so
18:14at the moment it is Monaco back in the lead they have a good line now in the
18:19run-up to the next turn New Zealand staying right up alongside the New
18:22Zealand is not letting go they are absolutely not nothing between them it
18:30is going to be Monaco with a better line now they're going nice and narrow Italy
18:34to though look at the Italy is nice they might clip the the buoy a little bit
18:38slowing them down so right after that yeah right after that that touch with
18:44the buoy you just have to get right back on your rhythm and kind of let that
18:47let that go and get back into it absolutely and so into the final 750
18:54meters of this race at the last few finals have been amazing and it's come
18:58down to the last 500 meters things have really changed so let's look at where
19:01you can see New Zealand now going for it they know they're gonna have to go for
19:05it Monaco have led it from the start voted them up at 37 strokes per minute
19:10now the finish line is in a size yep and here's where you definitely want to
19:15make sure you're rowing through the finish line and nothing I almost thought
19:23there was a bow on a stern deck there absolutely was Monaco I've held them off
19:28it is Monaco from New Zealand it leads to trying to take advantage now of that
19:33little clip now so they're coming up there might be a collision yeah I
19:37approaching here I think they were actually all going wrong that was the
19:40problem they were all heading they thought maybe they were going through
19:43those two boys that has allowed New Zealand to move into the lead but look at this we have
19:51Monaco we have Spain we have Italy to all caught up on each other is New
19:55Zealand to as well oh no and there goes for Monaco they're now down to fourth
20:00place crushing after being in the lead the majority of the race unfortunate on
20:08New Zealand they've stuck with it though they've got themselves into the lead
20:12Italy to I think are up there as well oh what a disaster for Monaco I mean
20:19that's the gamble that you take for being in the lead you have no one to
20:23follow so you know that's that that was the opportunity that New Zealand had
20:29absolutely looks like New Zealand now we're heading off to the penalty box oh
20:35this is gonna open up things massively now again all so from what I can see it
20:42is now Italy to in at the lead new disaster for New Zealand they've got
20:48themselves into the lead and now here they are having to stay here for a
20:53minute if it was for interference purposes all Jackie and Matt must be
20:57devastated at this point yeah that that is that's crushing that is just stopped
21:06there no things have changed massively here for the final stages of this race
21:19yeah we have new leaders coming up to the finish line yeah I'm hoping we get a
21:29close-up of the of the finish line and just see how tight it's gonna be in this
21:33last stretch absolutely we're waiting for confirmation of those leaders here
21:41now but things change it looks like I'd say Italy to maybe in second position
21:49so here coming in to the final stage is taking complete advantage of the
21:57carnage that happened out there Spain Oh three came out absolutely nowhere in
22:05where do they come from they actually won it their heat earlier on so I was
22:14surprised not to see them in that leading pack but what a great race they
22:18had Italy to held on for a second and look at this New Zealand to who were
22:23nowhere near medals there for a while have pushed themselves into bronze
22:27position so that's Joseph Sullivan and Christian of road I'm sure they're
22:32happy but probably equally devastated for New Zealand one who have now not
22:36even finished in the top eight here and our leaders for most of the race knocked
22:42down to seventh place for Monaco one I cannot believe what just happened those
22:49last few finals there things changed right to the finish those last 500
22:55meters those last couple of turning points really cut out Cruz as you said
23:02there Monaco led it from the start they dominated that race and so unlucky to be
23:08caught up with a clash with New Zealand who were then sent to the penalty box
23:12they're going to be devastated to have missed out on the podium as well but
23:18look you can only race what's out there in Spain three took advantage came and
23:23absolutely deserve to be up on the podium yeah gold medal for Spain three
23:30that was Jackie and Matt there after coming back from their penalty box
23:34finishing the race I want to take a peek out of our windows here we have a
23:40great view of not only the course and out on the water but of the beach so
23:45it's you when you're on the beach you get to actually you miss a lot of the
23:50the vantage point that we have here on the screens but you you get the the raw
23:55emotions of the cruise as they come on to shore and you know either high-five
24:00their coaches or each other too it's really cool to see all of that happen
24:04still it is and there's gonna be a lot of happy people but also a lot of
24:08disappointed people I feel after that race but that is the joy of this sport
24:13there's a lot of risk involved you know particularly with a course like this
24:17where the turns are so tight a lot of chicanes going on yeah and you really
24:21just even if you're winning like Monaco were from the very start like you just
24:25never know what is going to happen yeah and there's been a lot of medals there
24:31that we thought we're going to certain clubs today and they were taken right
24:36out of their hands and here's another example almost coming out of nowhere
24:41yeah absolutely we weren't even talking about the we weren't even talking yeah
24:44yeah so that is Spain Oh three are winners of the mixed double that is
24:50Patrico Rogas and Zara and Amanda Gale at Camacho Spain three and then Italy
24:55two they're gonna be very happy with their silver medal and Elisa Corazzini
24:59and Andrea Serafino and then Joseph Sullivan and Kristen Frode again another
25:04crew that took a complete advantage there and but they had done so well
25:08they'd won their heat earlier I was surprised to see them back the field but
25:11here they are now coming on to the podium in third position and look we can
25:16see Donham and Kittle they're finishing in 13th after being in contention for a
25:20gold medal this is what happens yeah and that penalty cost it all
