Transcript
00:00I'm delighted to have Danny back with me from Team USA. How are you? I'm so happy
00:05This is super exciting. Such good racing today, and I think we're about to see even more right now. I
00:10Think so for sure. So 18 crews lining up we had three heats
00:17Earlier on and six crews made it through to the a final from those
00:22So we see some big names out there
00:25Today
00:26So we see URI who was with me for a good few races there
00:30He's lined up number three there on our screens Keenum annex of Ireland another one to watch there
00:36Charles cousins Chris Bach. He was unfortunate there in the men's double day
00:40Broken or in the men's double a little while ago himself and Corey, but here he is in the single
00:46Yolana Karen in as well winning a medal in the men's double a little while ago
00:51Very quick turnaround for a lot of these athletes here today Charles cousins is also in there
00:55He came in third in the mixed double earlier today. Yes. He is definitely want to watch a medalist from the last year
01:04So here we can see a Chris back
01:08He was second last year, but without Adrian Miramont Kiroga the reigning world champion from last year
01:15He's in a great position to get himself back on the podium
01:21So
01:22Two minutes ago as we can see there
01:25The two balls in the air on the boat there that signals that there is two minutes to go
01:32It's a tricky a couple of minutes here because you're trying to stay on course aren't you you don't want to get ahead of those
01:38Starting boys. You're trying to keep your boat straight. You'll also try not to fill it with too much water
01:43Yes, and you can see kind of like I don't know if you can see it's a little stormy out there
01:46I'm looking a little a little more cloudy than it was earlier
01:49So the weather does seem to be getting just tiny bit more chaotic you can see that in the waves to there
01:55They're bopping around a little bit more than they were earlier today. There's you all care now Karen in from Finland
02:00Yes, the medalist from a little while ago
02:04He's racing lots of categories the men's double the mixed double the single last year. He was in four events at the endurance
02:11championships, yes and
02:14Then we are also seeing so Chris Bach seems to be holding back a little bit
02:19But I'm sure he'll take off right in the middle of them
02:22It is a strategy at the start line to turn your boat sideways so that you give yourself a little bit more room
02:26So it looks like Finland and New Zealand are taking that strategy making sure they have
02:31Enough room that they need
02:33Absolutely. Yeah, so there's 200 meters of space and of course with the solo boats. There's a lot more space to move around
02:41But at the same time it's really important that you're not left behind
02:45Anyone at all. So that's what we could see those roars doing getting themselves nice and sideways to take up lots of space
02:51So we're into the final minute here now
02:56Soon as that ball drops that last ball
02:58That's the start of the race and you'll see everyone get to get in. There we go
03:02Here we go
03:06So nice start here by all crews
03:12We can see you all the current in of Finland here on our screen
03:18This is a great start you can see him breathing heavy his cheeks puffing out love that
03:25Yeah, it's always
03:27Important to get all or go off hurt here at the start. So we're seeing kind of the leading boats
03:31It's interesting though over the right hand side of our screen
03:33It's not kind of the leaders of the heats will say all bunched up together on the right inside there and you can see on
03:39The left side of the screen there was a little more wave. So that might have something to do with it
03:42Otherwise, that's quite a coincidence
03:45Absolutely, and we're seeing there you can see the boats disappearing and reappearing here on our screens
03:49Just showing how I kind of challenging of course, there'll be that wash from the ship that we saw earlier
03:54There's another one passing them now. So those washes will be coming in towards the shoreline at the moment
04:00New Zealand Oh one. So that is the young rower Finley Hamel there 22 year old. He won his heat earlier on
04:07He's pushing himself into that lead trying to make a mark here now followed in by Italy
04:13Oh to currently sitting in second position. So that is Gabriella lock on soul
04:18Finishing fifth last year just outside metal positions
04:22New Zealand one Hamel Finley had the fastest time of all the heats
04:25it's hard to say what the weather conditions were for those but
04:29He seems to be leading right here and that's not a coincidence probably I don't think so
04:34No, then you're back in third position
04:37At the moment it is Lithuania in fourth. They
04:41Finished well in the heat as well Chris back currently back in a fifth
04:46So we saw him kind of hanging back in the heat earlier on today as well
04:50And then he kind of started to make a move. So I wonder if that's his strategy again today
04:55He did he did have two races earlier
04:58So well like that that could have something to do with it right now, but he does have a lot of strategy in his head
05:03He's a very strategic rower and I'm sure that everything he's doing out here is very purposeful
05:09You can see these waves you see their bowels moving up and down the further up the bow goes the harder it is for the
05:14For them to maintain speed
05:15so keeping that bow down through these waves to cut through them is going to be a big strategy and if you see that
05:20You could pay attention to the back to the bowels
05:23And we can see there Chris is trying to work that as best he can with the big lie back
05:27We saw that in his heat earlier on as well
05:30Trying to push the weight into the back of the boat
05:33And seems to be working because he seems to be starting to move up a little bit here now still looking quite calm
05:39I'm sure you know
05:40There's a lot of racing it to go here now and he knows there's plenty of space to get
05:45Catch up with those leading boats at the moment though
05:48But it's still New Zealand leading it out ahead of Italy to Finland one
05:52So y'all is currently in third Italy one then currently in fourth position
05:56We saw a great heat earlier from David at Mumulo. He won his heat
06:02He was in Paris earlier on this summer as a reserve
06:04He raced in the reserve races just missing out on a place on the team
06:09He's currently in fourth position
06:12Lithuania then in fifth and Chris back then in sixth
06:18You can see some pretty quite a difference in stroke right here between this green boat
06:23Who's that that is New Zealand here at a bit of a higher stroke rate than the rest of the?
06:29crews the rest of the boats
06:32Yeah, and we're actually seeing so much traffic
06:33I feel like there's more traffic out on the water right now compared to other races
06:37So we're feeling the effects of that those washes. You can see them there in the background
06:43But as I say that Italy won out David Mama Mumulo moving up alongside in the yulna Karen
06:49And so it's going back and forth between the two of them for third and fourth position at the moment
06:55But starting to pull away a little bit now as they come up towards that one a K
07:01Mark in this 4k course
07:03So Finlay Hamill of New Zealand rowing and lead it out similar style to Chris a slow stroke controlled really big lie back
07:11Yeah long through the water can be definitely an effective strategy
07:14As we've said many times before today already getting to this first buoy is going to be really crucial in terms of your placement throughout
07:20the rest of the race
07:21People who are there for the first first bit are going to have a little bit of an easier time staying ahead of the pack
07:27Absolutely, so New Zealand. They're still Lydia from Italy
07:31Oh to Italy one then in third position, but yola is still very much. They're still going back and forth
07:38I am wondering what happened with Keela Mannix of Ireland. He seemed to have fallen back quite a bit there
07:43I can't see him on my screen, but going by the GPS and he has fallen off
07:48Track really at this stage of the race
07:52Chris now moving into that fifth position Lithuania going back a little bit
07:56They were up in those leading that leading pack. They're back to eight now at the moment a great Britain or one
08:02So that's Charles Cousins. He's back in ninth position
08:05Again surprising I suppose he was on the podium last year finishing in third positions
08:09But it is there's a lot of new faces and not a new rower is here that they don't know what they're like a lot
08:14Of these didn't compete last year. Yeah, there's a lot of new new rowers for sure
08:18But there's also it's definitely technically a different regatta
08:21There's having heats and finals in the same day is going to be really difficult
08:24It's going to change a lot of strategies and it's going to affect some rowers
08:28Differently than others also some of these athletes a lot of them actually are doubling up in events
08:33So having more than two races in one day is going to be very challenging
08:37Absolutely. I completely agree with that at least with crews like the women's solo and the women's quad they had their heats yesterday
08:44So at least they had about 24 hours of a break. Whereas these had their heats earlier today
08:48So really not much time it to recover. So we're gone around that first mark now
08:53So 13 1400 meters in it to this race
08:56So they're heading out further east now to come into the sharp turn
09:00So it is still New Zealand one and then Italy to so Gabrielle long console still holding off the challenge from David
09:07Moolah, you'll know Karen and back in fourth
09:10Then Franco one even Bovey still there in touching distance. It's getting quite close here
09:17But everyone's being really smart at this stage
09:18I think they've gone around the course so many times that they know just you know
09:22Give each other some space and get around nice and clean. Yeah, this is looking really clean
09:26I love looking at the direction of everyone's course is what they're taking
09:30Seeing how some people are pointing a little to the left a little to the right
09:34But everyone has a different strategy in mind getting around. The second buoy is going to be really
09:40Clutched because it's about a hundred eighty degree turn as we've said many times today
09:44so making sure that you're
09:47Starting that turn right on time. It's going to be really important and we're definitely going to see some passing on the way there and
09:54Possibly on that turn as well. I
09:57Absolutely agree. So we're 1,500 meters in it to this race here
10:02Finlay Hamel now just really setting down a marker for himself here
10:07He has a lead of almost seven seconds there over Italy to Gabriella console
10:11Who was fifth last year at these world championships seeing that watch there? We spoke about it earlier
10:18Yeah, well there are there's so much more boat traffic out there and the safety boats as well
10:23It's coastal rowing but a coastal like an ocean wave does feel a lot different than a boat wake
10:29it
10:31Definitely affects the boat in a different way. This is amazing with New Zealand one out there
10:36He does not look like he's slowing down. No, he's just opening up the gap. Yeah now over Italy
10:45Yeah a lot to contend with here because the waves actually aren't that big at all
10:48It's just really messy every time that a boat passes there now
10:51Yes, and they're having to contend with it, but New Zealand here now looking so in control
10:58Shortly approaching that half way mark
11:01I wonder are there some more is
11:02Disappointed that they're not getting to do the 6k course because a lot of them would have prepared for that
11:06Of course because that's usually what the a finals are
11:08Yes, it is really fun and definitely like a 2,000 meter difference does make it a different type of race. There's different race strategies
11:16And I think that some rowers, you know are better in 6k some mores are better in a 4k so
11:23You know, you never really know what what benefits you the most until you're out there, I guess
11:29So we're seeing Italy Oh to here currently in second position Gabrielle a console
11:36Holding on to second. He looks like to be a bit struggling a little bit maybe
11:41Just maybe a bit unsure of himself here now and really looking over shoulder every stroke pretty much there
11:47Well, yeah with these crossways crossing back and forth and just small chop
11:51It's it's really hard to make sure that your point your boat point is staying exactly where you want it to
11:56So especially as you're coming up on the buoy
11:58You want to keep looking behind your shoulder to make sure that your course is exactly, right?
12:01So this turn can be as tight as possible
12:04So we're here now second turn as you said like at nearly 180 degrees here New Zealand one off again
12:13Leading it out big big lead here now. It's a leo to still holding off the challenge
12:18It's a leo one there as well. And then it's back between Finland and France and Spain
12:24So y'all the Karen in of Finland just coming around that turn now, maybe losing a little bit of ground back in for no doubt
12:31He is tired too. He had the men's double final got a
12:34Bronze medal a little earlier
12:36So, you know a lot of these are gonna be starting to feel it now as we head into the second half of this race
12:41Charles Cousins here now as well. He is currently back in the seventh position gone around a nice wide turn
12:49We have Spain Oh three and I think that's Chris back then in your screen as well Christian took a really tight turn
12:56He's super super experienced with those and you could definitely see it
13:01Right there
13:03Absolutely, so most crews now making their way around that second turn
13:09Even you can see this big boat just like moving around so much like
13:13It's pretty choppy out there. It is super choppy every stroke
13:16They take you can see the bow is just moving like there's no nothing straight about these lines here at all
13:22But with 40 meters of a lead now, this is pretty
13:26impressive
13:28New Zealand Oh one Finlay Hamill just 22 years old here leading it out here
13:34We have a great battle then between
13:37USA and Great Britain so Charles Cousins is closest to us on our picture is here Chris back is further away
13:43Chris holding on to his big long stroke as
13:47We have seen but look at this from New Zealand. This is a beautiful picture
13:52You have to take a second away from the race to just to just take in the city
13:55Jenna was super beautiful and has been such a nice place to have this regatta. I think the clouds are adding a nice
14:04Yeah, but look at this now these I'd say are some of the washes that are coming in from those big boats that cross but
14:10Look how messy it looks it looks so messy and you can tell even these tiny little peaks that are showing up
14:16All over the place is gonna feel very inconsistent, especially this far into the race over halfway through the race
14:22It's gonna be really really tough to be able to hold your technique in this inconsistent of water, this is crazy
14:29Look at it because you can see the way or the wind blowing in but then all the wash as well
14:34It's just a bit of a washing machine effect. I feel that's how we described Hong Kong back in 2019
14:40It was a complete washing machine out there and it's starting to look a little bit like that here now as well
14:45So 11 seconds of a difference between first and second position. This is incredible. This is
14:50Dominance here. Really?
14:51This is what we've seen like agent Miraman Kiroga has done this in the single representing Ireland over the years in Spain
14:58But at the moment we're seeing if Finlay Hamill come in and do the same thing
15:03yes, and you have to hand it to Italy having two boats in the top three is incredible as well that just
15:09Their programs going. Oh, yeah, there's a little bit of a crash here. That is tough
15:14You only have two wars in the boat if you lose one of them
15:19So Finlay Hamill, they're showing us how it's done representing in New Zealand rowing again
15:26So important to look over the shoulder you can see there for about five strokes
15:29He was looking over his shoulders because this is the tricky part of the course as you know yourself
15:33The zigzags are coming up that chicane
15:36And we saw earlier in the women's solo how unlucky Diana Demchenko was to go the wrong side of one of those turning points
15:43And missing out on a gold medal
15:46You'd rather look over the shoulder for five strokes and make sure you're going the right angle as opposed to yes
15:52And before even getting to the course memorizing what it is like on the map is super crucial
15:57So do you draw it on your leg? I see a lot of athletes do that
16:00I didn't bow but my but my bow seat was talking about having to draw it on the leg
16:04Yeah with a sharpie take a sharpie draw the map the buoy map of course on the way
16:09He is so dominant. You're right. It's so dominant here
16:12Absolutely insane and you can see his his far layback. He's laying back like 50 degrees
16:18Yeah, big big lie back here now very strong at the finish
16:23We see Italy o2 here as well still holding on it to the second positions
16:28There's 40 meters separating first and second, but then there's another pretty much 40 meters between second and third
16:34I'm not sure we've seen such distances between the top you boats and in many races to be honest over the years
16:40This is dominance by New Zealand, but Italy to also opening up big big space between themselves initially one
16:46Yeah, and there's been a lot of shuffling around as well between fifth and ninth place
16:51I think there's a lot of battling going on with those boats. Yeah, I was thinking earlier. We often forget about the racing
16:57There's often more
16:58Happening down the field, but because we're looking at the leading votes a lot
17:02You kind of forget about them
17:03But yes
17:04a lot of shuffling is Charles Cousins who has taken over from Chris back in a seventh position Spain or
17:10Three is holding on to six and you only Karen and is still holding on to fourth but baked
17:16There's about 40 meters of a difference between third and fourth here now
17:20So that's the race really off the top of the field those podium places. They're really pushing away now from fourth position downwards
17:27Well, you also start to gain a little bit of confidence
17:29Especially as you're coming through those slalom buoys
17:32If you can see yourself separating from people, you know that the top three boats are probably gonna have an easier time
17:38Getting a nice line having a nice course going from point A to point B
17:42whereas points, you know, six six through through eight are gonna be a little bit tighter and it's gonna be
17:48Harder to kind of kind of be able to choose your own course
17:51You're gonna have to take it into account where the other boats are around you
17:54So another great shot here of the big ship in the back
17:58Cool to see Finlay Hamill there got around his next marker boy. He has
18:04750 meters to go. We did see like a wave break over the shaft of his over there a while ago
18:09He was lucky. He didn't get caught up in that but his technique really is not faltering at all
18:14He's just adjusting so well to whatever is being thrown at him because obviously you're changing angles all the time on these different
18:21Legs and he's just saying solid. I don't think he's changed his technique. He's such a dynamic athlete
18:26I'm being in these types of this type of weather this type of, you know conditions you have to be there's Joel and Charles Cousins
18:34and Chris Bach
18:36Yeah, Charles Cousins seem to be holding off any challenge from Chris at this stage
18:40So you'll just go around that marker now in fourth position. He's followed in by France. Oh one that is Yvonne Bovee
18:47in that
18:48Fifth position Spain Oh three then so that is Marc van quest Montfort
18:54He is currently in six followed in by Charles Cousins and Christopher Bach
19:01Now Chris will be seeing him next weekend at the Beach Prince as well
19:04So that's not to look forward to I'll do a lot of them and Charles Cousins will be there as well
19:09Joel will be there too
19:11Exactly. Exactly. So we're gonna see them competing again next weekend, but final stages of this race here
19:17Now this is complete dominance here by New Zealand. Incredible
19:23This is very cool to see it's very cool to be able to be here and see this
19:27This is so so impressive. We're in it too. I would say the fine
19:33Marker boy here now looking over at the shoulder again a great view here
19:39anyone who is on the shore can really just enjoy this race because you can see
19:45From pretty much turning point to all the way back to the finish line
19:48If you're along the shoreline and in the town of Genoa, you can see the racing but incredible stuff here now
19:55Now I do think Devon mamalou momolo has moved up a little bit. He has it down to about 10 meters. Yeah himself and
20:03Gabrielle Lancons all in a second and third position. So he looks like he's putting on a bit of a push now
20:08we just saw Netherlands battle it out in the
20:12women's
20:13Double for for second and third and now we're seeing it the same thing with Italy
20:19When it's your own teammate, it's hard to not be extra competitive. I think you know
20:23Absolutely, and we are seeing that is Keel
20:25Keel and Maddox in shot their cycle. So he is still in the race, but this is second and third
20:30So I'm not sure where Davidoff came out of there. Look
20:35This is incredible. There was about 40 meters between them a while ago and he has pushed himself into second position
20:41This is the final leg of this race at the moment it is
20:48Gabrielle back in third now
20:52Seeing yourself on the wrong side of the wave seeing yourself on the right side of the wave you can see all the the speed
20:57His speed just gained so much
21:00comparably and
21:01Yeah getting claiming second over third in the last
21:05300 meters of this race is crazy. It's crazy
21:08It's very similar to what we said as you said in the women's double because Netherlands or three were dominating in second place and
21:14That lands on one just came out and over on that last leg and yes that silver position, but we have to hand it to
21:21Finlay Hamel of New Zealand. We saw a shot of him there second to go coming in in the finish line
21:27Absolutely dominating Wow this field the coastal men solo. Here is our champion. He is celebrating
21:33Look at this
21:36That's the amount of distance between him in second place is great. I don't know. I haven't seen that before that's amazing
21:41I haven't either but what a finish here now the great time. It is a brilliant time for a race. Yeah, three seconds
21:4827 three seconds
21:50slower than his
21:52His heat which is not much tougher condition. Yes today
22:03Looks that it was
22:05We thought it was in the in the bag for a second and third but things change so quick
22:10I was here that is wild. That is so good. That's such a fun thing to see
22:15amazing
22:17So you can see even as they head towards the shore here just a choppy
22:20It is but I'm sure and they'll be jumping straight in to the water to cool down
22:25After that what a finish there and it was France. Oh one who took over from you
22:31Now Karen is a front. Oh one even Bobby in fourth
22:34You only Karen in a fifth and we had Spain all three. So mark Frank West Montfort finished fourth last year
22:41He's in sixth this year. This is what happens, you know, this is what happens and like I said before you can't
22:46You cannot know what's going on ahead of you with that boats ahead of you. Anything could happen. So
22:51Yes, there's maybe quite a little bit of distance between some boats
22:55But you know, they're going as hard as possible all the way to that finish line
22:59Absolutely, and we saw Charles Cousins and Chris back there passing that finish line and
23:06Final you cruise here coming off the scene pictures there of Yona Karen
23:11and I'm sure he'll be happy because he has his medal from earlier in the men's double and
23:15Fifth position here in the solo. That's pretty good. That is a very nice. I would be pretty happy about that
23:21He actually finished 11th last year
23:23Would you believe so to move from 11th up to fifth that is pretty good in a year
23:27That is really good one year can make a big difference. Yeah, Keela Manic's been off Ireland in that orange boat
23:35And final few crews they're close see they're battling it out right here like they're still right there so it's still yes
23:45They don't even have to row they're just being pushed in by the winter pushing by the waves
23:52Yeah, look at that even for these last few boats
23:56To make an a final though of a world championships is incredible
23:59So, yes, you know to be in whether it's a fifth position 14th 18th
24:04To be there in an a final to have beaten so many boats already to get to this point
24:10You know is such an amazing achievement
24:13Absolutely, and as you said, they're give you they're all right till at the very end
24:19Spain oh one there. Look at that all smiles
24:24My eyes
24:27Yuri
24:29He ran from here earlier. He was commentating just a few races ago run
24:36Into his boat
24:39He was very happy to be in an a final as well. Yes as he should be
24:42Yeah, so we can see the black tides coming in over us here
24:46Things are looking spooky
24:48They are so we have the official results of the final the men's solo coming up
