2024 World Rowing Coastal Championships - Coastal Women's Quadruple Sculls - Final A
Transcript
00:00So just a little bit of side wind as they head out towards that first and second marker but yes 18
00:07crews now lining up they're all out on the water with about half an hour or so warming up they've
00:14been back behind the start line on their own little course we can see the markers there but here is
00:21the start list of finally of the coxed women's quads we have Great Britain 01, France 02,
00:28Great Britain 02, USA 01, Monaco 02, New Zealand 02, Monaco 01, Netherlands 01, New Zealand 01,
00:36Ireland 02, then we have Germany 03, Poland 01, Ireland 03, USA 02, Spain 01, Germany 01,
00:50Germany 02 and Denmark 01 so lots of entries from the same nation so we have a few Great Britain,
00:56few from New Zealand, from Ireland, Germany, USA so this is going to be an exciting race for us
01:06so just gearing up to the start so the three minute hooter should have gone and the first
01:13ball should have dropped here so crews will be keeping an eye on those you can see they're all
01:19lined up trying to get their own space on the start floating start this year which can be a
01:28challenge although I know some people prefer this type of start the last few years we've seen the
01:34beach starts where the rowers and cox are generally standing out of the boat on the water on the
01:40shoreline and having to jump in so this is a different ball game having to go from a floating
01:48position we can see the start boat there again two balls in the air that lets us know that there's
01:54two minutes to go I'm sure they'll be dropping that second last one now to let us know that
02:00it's nearly a time to go so much pedigree in these boats lots of Olympians in these boats
02:10and lots of club rowers as well we mentioned earlier how accessible this sport is because you
02:15are representing your club even though it's a world championships and so to be a club rower
02:21I've been there many times myself to be lining up against national rowers Olympians it doesn't happen
02:27too often in many sports so it's it's such a cool aspect of coastal rowing and the sport
02:36now crews have to be so so careful that they don't cross that start line
02:40we're seeing shots there of David Hussey on the left hand side of our picture he's coxing
02:45a composite crew from Ireland Arklow Rowing Club Kilmack Simon Castletown Bear and Portmagee
02:54so he is well experienced in coxing these races so he'll know exactly where he needs to be at this
03:00start so as I was mentioning you do not want to cross that start line too early because you will
03:05get a two minute penalty but crews now off to a nice start great to be joined here again by
03:12Uri just running in off the beach you've been working on your tan have you yes like constantly
03:18working same as the all the girls that are now in the women's quadruple scores I'm pretty sure
03:25pretty tanned already from waiting from the start so I believe that it's going to be a pretty fast
03:31race now I absolutely think it is and we all know that these quad races are always so so exciting
03:39and so all off to a clean start here so in this race it's so important to get such a fast start
03:46and get out into that leading pack because you do not want to be trailing anyone at this point
03:51not only will you be caught in a bit of messy water from the other crews but also because
03:55there's so many turning points there's eight in these 4k races you do not want to get stuck at any
04:01of those so at the moment it looks like it is Poland we mentioned these rowers earlier they're
04:06leading out from New Zealand to Denmark 01 and third followed by Netherlands and Ireland 03
04:13anyone you're looking forward to seeing in this race well of course the Dutch I mean that is a
04:17very interesting team that they composed there it's probably one of the strongest teams that
04:25they already showed us the great results in the heat
04:29they were fast and as you see there are a lot of big names there and it's I would say probably
04:37the favorites like to win in gold but let's see how it develops yes of course Netherlands have
04:42won gold in this category last year but we have a completely new crew this year
04:48they're Caroline Florin of course gold Olympian medalist they're from Paris in the women's solo
04:55she's made her way over to coastal rowing they're currently sitting in second position
04:58first place though we mentioned them earlier the crew from Poland Agnieszka
05:02Kobus-Zawaszka they're also an Olympian medalist from Tokyo 2020 that crew were third at the
05:09European Championships this summer here they are leading it out I'm sure they'll be very happy to
05:12be in that position well just believe me that Agnieszka, Marta, Barbara and Susan they're just
05:20going to try hard as fast as they can and then probably die somewhere in the middle then be
05:27reborn somewhere in the quarter last quarter and then just try to fight for the medal position
05:33well this is a very good place to be at this point in the race definitely because don't forget that
05:38before we were watching like some small boats let's say a double sculler there are only four
05:43words all together and now we have a complete fleet of the quads and if they're gonna arrive
05:49to the first turning point it's gonna be just a very very let's say carnage condition if they're
05:59getting too close to each other so it looks like Netherlands are one now moving in to the lead
06:10here now they finished second in their heat but we have a lot of pedigree in that board as we
06:18mentioned Caroline Florin there winning the gold medal at the Olympics and Dweta Fetter there
06:23coxing she was second in the men's eight she coxed them to a silver medal so I'm just looking at
06:30Poland seem to have fallen off our GPS here now I'm trying to look at the pictures to see if
06:34they're still on the water or if something happened them no I don't think that's anything
06:39happened I think it's some issues with the GPS because you see how it's jumping there and here
06:44so I couldn't imagine that to this team can happen something bad that they saw it because
06:49they're just such powerful women so I mean they definitely just rushed out together with the top
06:56top teams and definitely to look to look at is a New Zealand team we're together with Emma Twigg
07:05Bibiana Colgan, Brooke Francis and Spurs Lucky very strong crew something to expect from them
07:13and as we see they are now moving in the second position just slightly behind
07:18or even in front at this point in the race it's pretty hard to say who is where but let's just
07:26wait I'll say two three minutes and then it's going to be a bit more clear absolutely yeah I
07:32think the GPS are just falling off some of these crews but definitely still Poland leading it out
07:37here now as they head up to this first marker they're about 200 meters less off that first
07:44marker those first four crews seem to have a nice bit of space between themselves but it's
07:48very bunched up then back behind them kind of third fourth fifth sixth position right on top
07:53of each other so still Poland leading it out here now followed in by Netherlands things keep changing
07:59here New Zealand oh one as you mentioned three Olympians in that boat USA won then also rowing
08:09really well here they're representing next level rowing then Ireland oh three so that is the
08:16compass that I mentioned Cox by David Hussey they were second at the Europeans three of those rowers
08:21and David were second at the Europeans and third and a few of them got a bronze medal last year at
08:26the world championships so they're in kind of top five top six positions at the moment uh Ireland
08:33oh two then as well they did brilliant yesterday they won their heat unlucky for Ukraine who were
08:38excluded uh for missing a turning point but Ireland oh two managed to win that heat and here they are
08:44in that leading pack as well well as we see that for the crew from Poland it's everything obvious
08:51optimal because as they they made a pretty pretty clean turn with no destructions just aiming for
08:58the second buoy and I think at this point this is a very very good position to be to be at and
09:05if they I mean I could imagine if they gonna make it fast to the second buoy it's something to
09:12expect that they could win the whole race and that is definitely would be just a fantastic performance
09:19from the Polish crew but you know everything can happen there is there are still much more meters
09:25to row they're gonna be additional power needed but but yes as we see now they are still in front
09:34and building up the advantage absolutely and we can see conditions there actually have kind of
09:39eased off from the last few hours and of course these quads these big boats they're at least 130
09:46kilograms each they're well able to use these conditions so not too tricky just as long as you
09:51stay nice and clean with your rowing nice and efficient and we're seeing shots there of Ireland
09:55oh three uh they're moving up alongside uh looks like USA but still leading it out uh we have Poland
10:04from Netherlands so things here now Monaco are there as well we hadn't mentioned them either
10:11so they're all there pretty much in a straight line now as they head down towards this second
10:16marker as you mentioned this one is going to be important this is the really sharp turn
10:20um coming up and we can see second position now trying to put on a bit of a push here so
10:24Netherlands 01 New Zealand 01 trying to get up nice and close to Poland now we have in the middle
10:32of the picture the young crew from Monaco very small city but aquatic city so they they have
10:40this long tradition of the delivering outstanding performance in the coastal rowing they are by the
10:47way organizing also one of the most famous regattas at the end of the year in December
10:53it's called the Prince Albert Duodos challenge where the international representation so
11:03the Monaco team can can also move a bit forward as well so so we're seeing shots there of the
11:11leaders Poland I'm sure they're gonna be a few of them will be quite surprised that they're in
11:16this position I know Susan Doyle and Peter husband and wife there uh Susan was been has been so
11:21nervous in the lead-up to this race I'm sure she cannot quite believe her eyes to be looking back
11:26at 17 other boats right now at this position as they head up to the halfway point in this race
11:33Agnieszka of course has been there or there abouts every year herself and Maciek her husband have been
11:38at so many world championships been unfortunate in a lot of the championships uh with seats and
11:43different things uh but again I'm sure she'll be like thrilled to be in this position I'm pretty
11:48sure they are all in these moments they are super pumped they just uh really happy deep inside they
11:56cannot believe like their eyes what they see right now but they had like fight it till now very hard
12:03this advantage that they build up it's gonna help them much in the uh in the chicane yeah we see a
12:10crew they're just having to stop up to avoid a collision very important rather than getting
12:15caught up and losing time let's see if there's gonna be another collision looks like they're
12:19gonna come straight into the side of them oh so unfortunate third boat now trying to get around
12:25them so there's now allowing these two boats now to come in oh this is disaster for these crews
12:32looks like uh maybe Ireland and Spain USA just moving down the field uh that has allowed things
12:38to change up the top oh what a disaster this is that is so unfortunate for the for the teams but
12:45that exactly what I was trying to say at the beginning that you know like if you have that
12:50fleet of the quads it's gonna be just unimaginable to make a clean race so uh you see the teams are
13:01losing a lot of time but still uh the the leading the leading one together with the Polish crew the
13:07Holland and in New Zealand they are fighting further and they didn't have that destruction
13:12so they just setting up apart from the field and uh moving forward and just trying to perform their
13:18best at the moment absolutely so about 1600 meters to go in this race things changing
13:25so it is Poland still leading it out uh followed in by Netherlands New Zealand now in third and
13:31we're gonna have a shot here of all the boats getting stopped we can see the outside boat
13:36trying to take a smart line out around uh but so unfortunate this is what happens they were
13:43some boats were trying to slow down to avoid a collision others came in behind them this is what
13:47happens in the sport this is what makes it exciting for us watching well I I believe it's even a very
13:53hard to cock at the moment to make a decision where actually you have to go because don't
13:58forget that those boats are high above 150 kilos and they have their momentum so to stop them it's
14:05also not that easy it's not like that you just put stop rowing and they already stopped at that
14:10moment so they yeah very challenging for the coxes as well absolutely yes I was chatting to a few
14:18coxes throughout the day Whitney there from USA would join me in the last race and she was just
14:22saying how confident you have to be you just have to be so sure of yourself particularly in a leading
14:27crew like Peter Doyle here we're seeing coxing the Polish crew looking around this is a really
14:32nerve-wracking place to be you have to be confident in your lines and in your navigation because you
14:37do not want to go wrong like we saw with Diana Dzemchenko earlier having gone the wrong side of
14:43her turning point and getting disqualified from her race so this is a really important place to
14:49be you have to stay calm so I'm sure Peter now trying to make a bit wider curve so they don't
14:56lose that momentum but let's see how the Dutch crew gonna react because they don't have actually
15:02any space they're gonna definitely try to go inside but but it could only lead to the collision
15:09so it's very very challenging for the coxes right now how to find the perfect line how to
15:16overtake in this very narrow condition there yes 1250 meters to go here now Netherlands really after
15:24putting on a big push they're trying to take that inside line here now so they're moving themselves
15:29up along side Poland here now so it all comes down to who has the better line and as long as
15:36they stay out of each other's way that's really important because we often see two crews who are
15:40trying to fight here you know they often end up in a collision together so Netherlands really trying
15:46to put on the push here now but it's up to Poland to respond and stay in that position
15:51New Zealand then still holding on to that third position Germany or three and fourth Ireland or
15:56two have moved up into fifth after that previous collision Monaco or one in sixth and Ireland or
16:01three then in seventh do you think Poland have enough in them to hold off well such an experienced
16:08crew in terms of flat water I would say it's going to be very interesting on the one a bit longer
16:13stretch after the last buoy that's actually where it's going to be decided because at the moment
16:18still that the Dutch crew just has a the Polish crew just has a little advantage in the curve
16:24and you know like that they have that they have even this position advantage they have the curvature
16:31so I can imagine that at the moment they are in better position we see that the crew from
16:37Holland is just taking a bit wider curve so they are a bit losing their speed but let's
16:43see how they're going to approach the next point then I think that the most important thing at that
16:50point for the Dutch crew is just trying to get the nose exactly on this turn a bit in front of
16:56the Polish crew just to get to the buoy a bit earlier than the the opponents because then
17:03they're going to be on the inside lane and they show the scope that it's going to be just by them
17:08absolutely this race here is going to come down to the absolute wire here between Poland and
17:15Netherlands still Poland have the advantage here we're into the final 750 meters nothing
17:23separating these crews here now Netherlands putting on a big big push looks like they've
17:29gotten themselves in that lead here now going around that marker they took a bit of a nicer
17:35line there now staying nice and tight forcing Poland to go that little bit wider that means
17:39Netherlands now have moved in to the lead ahead of Poland but but that is now I would say a question
17:45are they gonna make it to very nicely to the next one because don't forget that they're right this
17:49year she can it's just so many turns but it seems that they made their way clear and I
17:55I hope just that the the Polish guy is gonna just stay in front of the New Zealander but
18:02I don't think that New Zealand have that much of a power but still they are definitely gonna try to
18:08attack the advantage of the Dutch crew is just the ones and that's what they showed right now like
18:15in the previous straight line the question is gonna New Zealand just have the power to
18:21to outperform their Polish opponents I'm not sure if there's enough space here left in the
18:28final stages of this race to catch this leading pack Netherlands now holding off the challenge
18:35from Poland let's see what the Cox's do around here Netherlands staying nice and tight Poland
18:40now is taking a similar line and then we're seeing the third place New Zealand and right up alongside
18:46them Germany oh three so it's not over for that bronze medal position here now but Netherlands
18:52here just pulling away now a little bit from Poland but I'm sure Poland are still going to be
18:59very happy to be in this medal position oh I was just thinking that I lost a rowing or but that is
19:07something special actually what we saw now in this close-up something special by the New Zealand team
19:12they are always throwing it a bit behind the back so they have like a bit more of this steering
19:18and as we see that it worked out pretty well but let's see how the young girls from Germany
19:23is gonna perform and are they gonna get into this bronze medal position it's about it's less than
19:30500 meters to go probably one or two turns and it's already the straight line directly to the
19:36finish so the first and second places are secured by the bow screws of the Netherlands and Poland
19:42I don't think then that here gonna be much of the change the
19:48except there are any mistakes but you know it can always happen that would be very unfortunate to
19:54happen at this stage of the race I think the race is happening here between New Zealand Germany or
19:58three in Ireland or two we saw pushing up there within touching distance of that bronze medal
20:04I'm sure they'll be very happy to be in that position but look at this from Netherlands we
20:08knew they were going to be strong we knew that they were going to do a very well Poland have
20:14done amazing here in this race to be winning for pretty much three quarters of the race
20:20unfortunate to be overtaken by Netherlands but to be in second position here now that crew from
20:26Poland are going to be a massive result for the Polish crew and as we were saying all the time
20:32very very solid performance Dutch crew just had the found their moment where they can overtake
20:39this a bit longer stretch in the chicane and they that's what made them actually to the world
20:46champions this year in the women's quadruple skulls yes solid race in there Netherlands
20:53oh one coming in to take the win they are celebrating the coastal women's cox quadruple
20:58skulls Poland oh one coming in in second position they are going to be delighted but look at this
21:04race that is happening for third position we have Germany we have New Zealand we have Ireland oh two
21:10what a sprint from Ireland they've moved within touching distance of New Zealand
21:14can New Zealand hold them off it looks like they will it is New Zealand who have come in ahead of
21:22Ireland oh two Germany oh three well that was the finish that was the fight for the bronze medal
21:29that New Zealand was always in front but the last stretch they made it and they now can't be happy
21:36with their bronze medal this year what a finish out of Germany and Ireland New Zealand look to
21:43be set in that third position for most of the way around that course but as we've often said it's
21:48not over till it's over Ireland and Germany putting on a big big push they're so unfortunate
21:52to miss out on the podium but incredible racing there in the women's quad we're seeing the crews
22:01there the winners Netherlands they're going to be very happy with that performance Caroline
22:08Florin winner of Olympic gold and now she can add winner of the women's cox quadruple skulls
22:15world championships to her hall of medals this year and then finishing in with fifth Germany oh
22:23three Monaco you mentioned them sixth position Ireland oh three then in seventh USA and eight
22:30that's USA oh two and New Zealand oh two who were very strong in the first stage of that race
22:34their finish in ninth position but I think that that was exactly the point where they
22:40they crashed and collided with all other teams and that's actually what cost them much
22:45in front of us are the team a young team from the Monaco very solid performance sixth place
22:52outstanding I mean very young crew so we wish them all the best all the best for the training
22:59as well like for this year and maybe next year we could congratulate them for the medals
23:06absolutely it's great to see the medals uh going to different places now Netherlands of course
23:11won this category last year as well but completely new crew uh here bar the cox uh she won uh last
23:18year she coxed the crew we saw Yannick and Karin Roberts there in that one last year they've moved
23:25into the double uh concentrating on the double and single this year so new crew in the Netherlands
23:30both but they're going to be happy to be going home with gold medals well but that's going to be
23:36a very interesting right then in the women's uh double skulls because Caroline and Marieke they
23:42then enter the double skull just directly after this race they're just changing the boat and they
23:48are already on their way to the next race and the next race is going to be women double skulls
23:55finally and we're seeing the pictures here Ireland to Kinkasla rowing club, Niamh Dugan, Danica
24:01Maguire, Katie Sherlow, Claire Fiorik Cox there by Kian Sweeney super finish out of them
24:09finishing just outside the medals their fourth position but incredible racing there by those
24:17so seeing beautiful scenes here now and we're looking at the results
24:21the third final of the day the win the gold medals going to Netherlands 0-1
24:26great time 17 of 53.82 Poland 0-1 then they're definitely going to be happy I think with those
24:32silver medals to add to their bronze from the European Championships New Zealand then in third
24:38Ireland 0-2 just so unlucky to miss out on a medal fourth position and Germany as well had a super
24:43finish there there was three boats in 37 strokes a minute there we saw that they were trying to
24:50get to the New Zealand unfortunately just yeah the New Zealanders had their what absolutely
24:58absolutely so that rounds out the third final of the afternoon just seeing the rest of the results
25:05there when there's such exciting racing happening in the lead we often forget about what happens
25:10down the rest of the field but to be in an a final at a world rowing coastal championships
25:14is amazing so congratulations there to all crews
