00:00so all crews out on the water now here is the start list we have 18 crews
00:08lining up you see Hungary a one Italy o6 Germany o3 USA one Monaco to Italy o3
00:17Germany o1 Netherlands o1 Italy to Ukraine one Ukraine of course winning
00:26their heat earlier Italy to one the other heat so there was incredibly fast
00:32times earlier and I'm delighted to be joined by David Hussie again so you were
00:36with me earlier during the heats here where we had amazing times in the heats
00:41of the men's coxquads yeah so it's just we're just talking about it this morning
00:48about you know the crews seem to be treated yet as a final and rowing
00:51really hard in those heats but you can see the reasoning behind it because for
00:56people as fit as them you know it was to put down a marker to the other crews but
01:00also they knew that they would easily recover in time for the final which is
01:03about to go ahead now and also the final is a 4k instead of a 6 and I was just
01:09out there coxy and the women's quad race and there was no such thing as settled
01:13down into a steady pace it was basically a sprint to the first marker because you
01:17had to otherwise you couldn't get yourself into a position at the first
01:20and second marks so I would be predicting that the men's quad will be
01:23something similar I think all of these crews know who's who and what's what and
01:27what's ahead of them and they are all going to be fighting off that start line
01:30to get that vital first or second place I think they'll all be pushing it right
01:35up as far as the line as close as they can without breaking it obviously
01:38there's a two-minute penalty involved there but you can see there already as
01:41they're starting to line up and we've got maybe a bit of time left to go but
01:45they're they're really pushing it as hard as they can up to that line yeah
01:48obviously the the quads are so big like you know when when you have the singles
01:52up there you have quite a bit of space around you but with the quads you're
01:55really tucked up right next to each other and we can see a couple of them
01:58are kind of going a little bit sideways we saw that in the the men's solo race
02:01as well just to get your space and to stick there but you can see there in the
02:06middle of the field there's a couple of boats right on top of each other you do
02:08not want to be starting in that position because it will cost you all-important
02:12seconds yeah I think if you do clash in the start when boats are going at their
02:17highest speed you're going to drop five seconds so usually the best policy in
02:20the start is don't be too close to either end if you can help it but pull
02:24up in your slot where you'd like to be and just sit there and just you know
02:26people generally move away from you whereas if you're moving all over the
02:29place it's kind of difficult to get a slot and we can see a kind of a line of
02:34boats in the middle who are pretty settled and they're going nowhere but
02:36there's a couple of boats at the back who are trying to get a bit of room and
02:39we can see there another quad right close to that outside mark as well which
02:43is a it's okay if you don't hit it but if you do you're going to be dropped in
02:47the start is what happened the heat earlier today absolutely now you cox the
02:51women's quad final just a little while ago so how did you approach the start
02:55were you right up at the line at the time or did you hang back no I was
02:59literally I was within a couple of feet of the line I took a bit of a chance to
03:02be honest about it but I thought it was worth the risk because the pace of the
03:06start was hectic there was we're out with with Poland and with the
03:10Netherlands who were first and second so we had a really good start but you could
03:13really see the power to the Olympians coming through after five six hundred
03:16meters but we're happy enough with our performance in the quad but like I said
03:19at the start I'd say our bows was probably touching the start line it's
03:23risky but it's it's very important not to end up back in the pack at the start
03:26so I think you'll see a lot of these boats now we'll be watching each other
03:30and pushing up pushing up absolutely so we're into the final two minutes now and
03:35so yeah we can see the two balls there so one is going to be dropped very soon
03:41for the final minute so they're all keeping a close eye on that so with the
03:45starting sequence we have three balls in the air and three hooters and they drop
03:49one every minute so it looks like I'm not sure if it's stuck are they trying
03:53to drop it but we're still within the two minutes here now now conditions
03:58obviously was very flat this morning it did get quite a bit rougher we'll say we
04:03thought it was gonna be a bit flatter for the day so how was it when you were
04:06out there it seems there seemed to be a lot of washes coming in from various
04:10boats yeah there is conditions are perfect for coastal rowing there's a
04:13nice rolling swell but like you say if you're not at the front then I mean you
04:16have to have the boats there for the safety and the umpires and the TV and
04:19all that kind of stuff so you do get a bit of wash but generally if you're up
04:22pretty good at the front you should be okay it'll be interesting to see now the
04:27start is going to be over here you've got some really powerful crews lined up
04:29on this you've got as we said Germany earlier Italy Netherlands there's a lot
04:34of horsepower in these crews and they will be trying to get themselves out so
04:36I think everybody has found their slot at the moment anyway I don't think
04:40anybody seems to be tight everybody seems to be happy enough for their
04:44position so I think we'll get a good clean start in this one by the looks of
04:47it by the looks of it is yeah but you can see the bow is how they're kind of
04:51angled different you know some are angled more towards the shore more are
04:54angled out into the wind and the waves a little bit so as soon as those crews
04:59take their first few strokes we'll see what happens a few there in the middle
05:03getting very close to that line but they are off now and we'll see if anyone
05:09crossed that line and got a little time penalty for themselves but
05:14everyone is off there did it look close to you there I think that was very tight
05:18Spain five took a chance now if it works it's fantastic they've already got a
05:21length here but they really took a chance on it but you know if you take a
05:24chance and it works you're you're out in front and they're in the World
05:27Championship final so it's working well for them I think that looks like Italy
05:31beside us here all Italian crews are always performing very highly at these
05:36events over the years but we can see now that the field has already opened up to
05:40maybe four to five lengths already and we only have 20 30 strokes pulled so
05:44that tells you everybody was going hot and heavy at it at the start to try and
05:47get that all-important advantage and if Spain's approach has worked and they
05:52haven't broken the line I think they're in a really good position at the moment
05:55at the head of the field absolutely yeah of course if they did break it that's a
05:58two-minute time penalty so they're gonna have to sit out on the water
06:01towards the end of the race in the penalty box but we'll see what happens
06:05but they now leading it out then we have lots of Italian crews at the moment it
06:09is Italy or two they wouldn't their heat earlier so they had that super fast time
06:14of 15 minutes 36 I'm not sure we'll let the race today be as quick the final
06:19just simply because it's the conditions are slightly rougher than what they were
06:24a little bit more challenging conditions but it is a final after all so we may
06:28not have seen the best out of those crews earlier so it's gonna be super
06:31super fast but yes Spain 05 now leading it out from Italy three Netherlands one
06:37then back in third position yeah so the Cox's fall got their lines anyway you
06:41can see there now there's nobody is moving too much from side to side they've
06:45they've all got their line and they're all quite happy Spain now I've got a lot
06:48of company there on the inside there's three boats fighting each other for that
06:51slot so they're starting to creep up on Spain it looks like Italy who are our
06:55fast crew from this morning Italy to and Italy three and also Netherlands as
07:00well with that Olympic power that we spoke about earlier as well too so
07:04there's going to be an unmerciful amount of pressure coming on the Spanish crew
07:08now who have got that advantage in the start to try and hold off these these
07:11elite crews that are inside them so we can see on the screen there now it looks
07:17like the the Ukraine seems to have joined the fray as well too so there's
07:20another another very powerful crew as well adding to the mix at the front
07:24absolutely yes the crew from Central Sports Club of the Army of Ukraine there
07:28they won their heat as well with a time of 1559 so very impressive time from
07:32them as well so they're moving up in to that leading pack here now so we're
07:38about halfway down at the first leg of this course is about 1300 meters Ukraine
07:44it's going back and forth between Ukraine and Spain five Italy three
07:47Netherlands 0-1 so many of these roars have been out already today you know
07:54have had their heats and here they are now doing multiple finals you know we're
07:58seeing that across the board over the last few races so surely it's taking a
08:01little bit out of them at this stage I think it might be but well one thing's
08:05for definite anyway Ukraine have decided to make a massive push just there and
08:08try and get out and the Spanish crew and I think they've got their bows out in
08:12front they have so I think that was a very important move by the Ukrainian
08:15crew just there at that point because you can see the gap between the boats
08:17has really closed up together so I think advantage at the moment is
08:21definitely with Ukraine due to the fact that they have that rounding line at the
08:24first mark it's not very tight of a rounding at the first one the second one
08:28is but now the boats are really closing up together on top of each other and we
08:32can see there's about a line of five and behind that we've got a line of three in
08:36a line of three so we saw excellent navigation this morning on that first
08:40mark so I think we'll see more of the same on this one here because it's not a
08:43sharp return as the second one yes we're one kilometer down into this four
08:48kilometer race it is Ukraine just holding off the challenge from Spain 05
08:53and Netherlands 01 there Italy 03 Italy 04 is going back and forth between all
08:59of them here now their positions keep changing Ukraine as you said it's
09:04important to try and put on a bit of a push here now just so you're not getting
09:07squeezed at that turning marker yeah so the turning mark is coming up pretty
09:13quickly now we see we're at 1,100 meters so I think we're not too far away from
09:16it but Italy Italy have done fantastic work in the navigation to take the
09:20position they have so I think that it's
09:26the crew can sense that as well too and then they're wondering what's going on
09:30so you absolutely have to think ahead maybe 50 100 meters ahead and make sure
09:34that your line is correct so we saw the Italian Cox getting the line right
09:39before even getting at the mark and then taking that inside line now Ukraine are
09:43pushing as hard as they can to get in front but all Italy have to do
09:46realistically here is they don't have to try and get a length ahead of Ukraine
09:49all they have to do is just stay there so I think the Italian Cox will be saying to
09:53his crew whatever you do just keep me here and keep that overlap that all
09:57important overlap present and the second mark which is a very tight mark will
10:01will walk in their favor we see a slight bit of oversteering on the inside
10:06on the back markers there may be 9 10 12 but in general Ukraine and Italy but
10:11Italy definitely have a huge advantage coming to this mark if things stay the
10:14way they are absolutely so yes Ukraine now just ever so slightly in the lead of
10:20Italy or two then it is Spain or five in third position back to the reigning
10:26world champions in their back the field not sure will they be a bit disappointed
10:30things are getting very close here though we're seeing the boats here and
10:33this Cox is really having to oversteer to try and stay out of trouble yeah I
10:37think what's happening at the back markers then are getting an awful lot of
10:40wash so you can see really good crews like for example Germany won USA won
10:44these crews they're now back a bit and they're getting all that wash which
10:47makes it very difficult to row and then get a clean line at it but up front the
10:53action is still between Ukraine and Italy two very matched crews in terms of
10:57speed and like you say you have got Italy 3 Italy 4 there's a lot of very
11:01strong crews from Italy here today in this this very competitive quad race so
11:06this mark is going to really decide I think who's going to take the gold
11:11medal position Ukraine are doing everything they can to get away from
11:14that overlap position but if they can't get away from the overlap they're going
11:17to have to round outside and I think the Italian Cox is definitely demanding I
11:22need at least one meter of an overlap that's all so all he has got to do is
11:27maintain his overlap for the it's about a hundred meters at second mark so we
11:30see how this develops now three and four also it's Italy three and Spain are our
11:35leaders from early on is going to be a very tight battle with them as well at
11:38the at the second mark absolutely and then fifth position there we're seeing
11:42at the crew from Jersey rowing club representing Great Britain they're
11:46currently in fifth position they're having a nice little battle with a sixth
11:50place which is Italy or four then Netherlands or one I probably would
11:53have expected them to be a little bit further off the field with the
11:56pedigree that it's in that boat but Ukraine were so strong in their heat
12:00earlier Italy or three we're coming up towards this turn here now things I'm
12:05sure are gonna get exciting this is the point where people start to hold their
12:09breaths I think yeah I think Ukraine have just tried to move in on top of
12:13Italy there if there's no overlap I think they're okay but if there is
12:15overlap the umpires will be having a really close look at that now because
12:19it's touch-and-go on the overlap whether they had or not so I think Ukraine might
12:23have just done enough to get clear but Italy held ahead and got that inside
12:27line and did very well so Ukraine worked really hard on that mark but Italy
12:30responded so both coxes are doing fantastic work there one trying to take
12:34the lead and one trying to stop the other taking the lead this is brilliant
12:38I think it's nice for the rowers and the quads it takes the pressure off them
12:42having to look around because we saw in the last few races there in the singles
12:45and doubles because of the tricky conditions you know crews rowers were
12:49looking over their shoulders every second stroke to make sure they weren't
12:52being pushed at least that pressure is taken off you in a quad so the cox is so
12:56important but everyone that's actually a really nice clean turn for what I
13:00thought was going to happen at it I was brilliant navigating by all of them and
13:04like you say I think Netherlands like we said had a very strong showing earlier
13:06today but it's just so difficult when you're back in that third or fourth
13:10position because you have to adjust your line as you're coming into the marks but
13:13in fairness to all the coxes at the boys they've done really well and again Italy
13:17to our old friends from this morning they have got themselves on the inside
13:20line for that third mark now but Italy and Ukraine are very equally matched
13:25here you just could not pick one from the other I think maybe if Ukraine are
13:29able to make a big push here and just take the lead there's a chance that they
13:33can take the lead from Italy before the next mark then in that third position
13:38it's Spain or five have moved themselves back in to a medal contention position
13:44here just pushing away from Italy or three at the moment Great Britain still
13:49holding on to that fifth position but if you look at the meter distance between
13:51them there now those top four now really going for it and pulling away from the
13:57rest of the field Ukraine Italy there's a big battle here now before they try
14:01and get to the chicane they're really trying to you know get there first
14:04aren't they yes Ukraine just have to get rid of that overlap to make it work at
14:10the turn but and Italy know they have to hang on to the overlap to prevent
14:13Ukraine from coming across in front of them so it's a fantastic battle I think
14:17Ukraine definitely have the power but if they can get themselves clear at this
14:22mark I think they're putting themselves in a very good position then for the
14:25next mark which is rounding on the other side so now they take the advantage so
14:29we see can Ukraine get around and hold the inside line for the next mark and I
14:35think they've done very well the Ukrainian Cox has done a fantastic job
14:38on that rounding and now Ukraine are in pole position for the opposite side of
14:42the mark exactly experts navigating around that marker Italy to then still
14:50in a second Spain and Italy three though there is overlap and the reigning
14:54champions Italy won here after moving themselves ahead of Great Britain for
14:58that fifth position Italy o4 then in seventh we have Netherlands then back in
15:03eight looking at the speeds here now Ukraine and Italy o2 evenly matched
15:09obviously the speeds keep changing depending on what position they are on
15:12the wave but Ukraine now are in a really great position as you said here
15:16they are around the next marker yeah nice clean turns by both of them and I
15:23think Ukraine we saw Ukraine I think was in where it's in Portugal the last time
15:26they were on the water and they won that by lens upon lens they were easily the
15:31strongest crew in the water but you can see they still have that power and now
15:34they're starting to pull away from Italy too I think they know now that they're
15:37in control of the race and all they have to do is keep the rowing as long as
15:40possible and use that long levering power that they have to stretch their
15:44lead away and keep the boat running between the marks yeah just 1,200 meters
15:49now to go so we have a few chicanes to come it's me to trying to challenge him
15:55here now keeping a really quick stroke rate here Spain o5 still in touching
16:00distance here though as well currently in bronze medal position Italy o3
16:04pushing on here now as well they're moving themselves into that bronze
16:08position look at it be one and four as well coming up it could it be for
16:12Italian crews in a row it's incredible by the Italian the Italian team to be
16:17able to do this I mean when you see the crews that are back in in eighth you
16:21have the Netherlands are back as far as eight and the German crew are extremely
16:24powerful as well are back in 10th and 11th so the Italian team has decided to
16:28make this men's quad race their own here today and Italy to haven't passed up on
16:33the gold medal either they're attacking Ukraine every chance they get yes they
16:38are indeed and look at this from Italy three though they've come up right
16:43alongside Italy to this is gonna be a tight one here for the two Italians
16:47Ukraine now just starting to pull away opening up that clear water I think that
16:53Italy to are trying to hold off Italy tree now I think that's the problem they
16:56haven't and like you say Spain five who are the early leaders of the race they
17:00are not going away either they think that they can get on the podium as well
17:02so they're they're really holding on to their position as well but Ukraine are
17:06really rowing long rowing strong very powerful crew so I think they're just
17:10doing enough to stay ahead at the moment and Italy to Italy three then there's a
17:15very interesting battle for silver and bronze between these two crews after
17:18that last mark it's opened up a little bit for them absolutely and it's funny
17:21we've seen it in the last few races in the women's double there was two crews
17:25from Netherlands going head-to-head in the men's solo as well there was two
17:30crews from Italy going head-to-head and here we have it again two Italian crews
17:34fighting out for silver and bronze and this push from them that means they are
17:39pushing up on Ukraine now as well so I would not write either of these Italian
17:43crews off for the gold medal right now I would I would agree I'd say Italy three
17:47we're wondering where's all the power coming from but inside the boat we have
17:50a Simone Martini world champion and also we have from the Olympics as well
17:57so there's two two Olympians there two two very powerful athletes as well so
18:01it's no surprise that Italy three are coming through really strong in in the
18:05second part of the race here and they're challenging Italy two it looks like
18:09there's if they have the inside line and the smart they may be may be able to
18:12take Italy two on the inside here but I think Ukraine have sensed the danger of
18:17Italy two and Italy three who are racing each other and they've decided to push
18:21as hard as they can to get clear of this battle for silver and bronze behind them
18:25yes they're gonna have to push hard we're coming into the final 500 meters
18:30here we go around the next marker oh slight error by Italy three and now the
18:36doors open for our early leader Spain five if they can take advantage of that
18:40little gap just there and I think they can I think Spain five have just taken
18:45advantage of that on Italy two and Italy three are all tangled up
18:50and now there's a sense of a bronze medal coming for whoever can get through
18:54that gap there's a little gap there. It looks like Netherlands are gonna actually come up. It looks like it was the three Italian crews that got into that battle and it's now
19:02Netherlands who've moved themselves into third position they were completely out
19:05of the medal contention there a while ago yes and when you're coxing there the
19:09positions you just love to be in when you can just see a gap like that and
19:12change everything and I think gold is still gold but silver and bronze there's
19:17been huge changes there Netherlands have came from nowhere to take that bronze
19:21medal position. They were back in 8th position just there a while ago and here they are now in a bronze medal position we were saying
19:30Italy the two Italian crews were two and three were potentially going for you
19:35coming for Ukraine for a gold medal and now they're gone back to 8th and 9th
19:39position yes and Ukraine will be so happy to see that happening behind them
19:42because now they can relax and enjoy their last 500 meters coming home so
19:46they're quite happy with that now they're totally relaxed now rowing home
19:49they know the gold medal is theirs and Spain 5 after their early start we hope
19:53that it worked for them you know so we haven't seen them go into the penalty
19:57box yet yes so if they're not in the penalty box they're definitely on the
20:01podium as one of the others hopefully it worked for them and it just tells you on
20:06the start of the race when you take a chance it works and there they are they
20:09they came from I think it was fourth but they had to be up there to be in a
20:13position to take advantage of the of the slight clash there at the second last
20:17mark and Netherlands had the power to get through that gap that was super
20:23coxing there from Netherlands but here we have Ukraine coming in at dominating
20:29this field had some great battles with Italy but it is Ukraine coming in in the
20:35coastal men's coxed quadruple skulls Spano for so lucky there they really took
20:43advantage just coming for the line but there's absolutely ferocious pressure
20:49coming on them to get over the line from Italy one the reigning champions also
20:54came out of nowhere what a performance especially the the
20:58Netherlands Cox Duke a fetter like we spoke about earlier real character
21:01really epitomizes the spirit of coastal rowing but she got one chance to get on
21:05the podium and she took it and there was no no turning back after that there was
21:09no turning back Italy one did do all their best to get up there Great Britain
21:15holding on to their fifth position Italy four and six Germany two and seven
21:19unfortunate Italy three back in eighth position after what a race they had had
21:24up to that point it's a two as well so unfortunate I see Great Britain one will
21:31be very happy to have moved up into a solid fifth position as well to after
21:34that you know they challenged well early on and they had to come again but rarely
21:39do you see silver and bronze medals being contested with 500 meters to go I
21:43think that is the Netherlands absolutely delighted to come from nowhere to the
21:48podium and they've been walking around the board for the last five minutes
21:52celebrating so brilliant performance and and so so deserved to take advantage of
21:59that situation but very hard for Italy two and three though you know after
22:04rowing so well and racing so well to have that little collision to happen
22:07yeah we can see the passion there out of the rowers here I'd say one of them
22:12is missing an oar so they lost an oar there in that collision yeah that's part
22:17of the racing unfortunately there's winners and losers out of these
22:20collisions but that was a that was exceptional to see that happen in the
22:24second last turn though second last turn of the day absolutely we've seen some
22:29incredible finishes in the last few finals there it's really come all the
22:33way down to the finish line which is what we expect at a World Rowing
22:38Coastal Championships Spain a one there we're seeing on our screen
22:47we can see some of them disappointed some of them still celebrating out there
22:52that's always the way but to make an a final I've been saying it like you know
22:56we always concentrate on those making the podium but to make an a final in the
22:59World Championships is just an incredible yeah just to be just to be in
23:03the a final like you say just to be in the company of all these world-class
23:05athletes all these Olympians is an achievement in itself and Spain five for
23:11example their their race tactic was you know we're going to push this as far as
23:15we can to the start take a chance get out in front they got out in front all
23:18right and then of course the power of the Olympic crews were able to get past
23:21a bit but they still were in a position to capitalize which is so important if
23:26both collide with each other you just have to be within a couple of days to
23:29take advantage of that and we spoke about the time that it mightn't be as
23:32fast as this morning it's a 16 minutes we see is the time which is super fast
23:37for a quad race it is incredibly fast but 20 seconds slower 25 seconds slower
23:43than the heats earlier and but incredibly fast all the same because
23:49obviously conditions are a little bit different from earlier but
23:53congratulations there to all crews
