00:00Hello, so I have a question regarding relevance basically because in today's world, most people are trying a lot of things, trying to stay relevant or making themselves noticed and they are trying different things like writing stories or books or even making movies, reels or on TikTok.
00:25So, what are the challenges that one faces while trying to keep themselves relevant in the modern world?
00:34Why do you want to be relevant and to whom? What do you mean by relevance? You want to be important to others, right?
00:41As in, in the form of self-actualization, you want to realize yourself to others as well as, I think, value yourself.
00:54I am not getting the connection you are drawing. How is self-actualization related to being relevant to others?
01:03I think there are people who find value in being valuable to others and being valuable to yourself.
01:17That's quite false and very dangerous, no? If your self-image or self-esteem depends on the opinion others have of you, right?
01:29I made a good TikTok video or a Facebook reel and it got appreciated, it got a million views and that makes me feel very, very good about myself.
01:40Is that not very dangerous? Are you not exposing yourself to a very bad kind of slavery?
01:50Who am I is being determined by the entire world. You are allowing a billion people to become your masters.
01:59If they approve of you, you are great. If they don't, you are gone.
02:06This will lead to a terrible kind of psychosis. You will always be looking at others.
02:18In fact, you will always be looking in others' eyes to see how you look.
02:24That's not a free position to be in. What is that?
02:32If I have to constantly keep wondering what others might be thinking of me, I cannot be called a free person.
02:41Are you seeing this? See, this is the nature of the world.
02:50If you get too dependent on anything it offers, you have condemned yourself to slavery.
02:57And fame is one of the most seductive things that the world offers.
03:05Do not be addicted to this seduction.
03:11Similarly, prestige, money, power.
03:19You are not born with those things, nor will you carry those things when you are gone.
03:29They were given to you in the world by the world.
03:36And if the world can give these things to you, the world can also withdraw them.
03:41And you will live in constant fear of that withdrawal.
03:46Today people are liking you, tomorrow they may not.
03:51Today somebody professes closeness to you, tomorrow that person might drift away.
03:58You say you have so much money today, the government might freeze your bank accounts tomorrow.
04:04Is that money really yours?
04:06Even the body, it does not follow your commands.
04:13Tomorrow the doctor may declare you have cancer and four months to live.
04:19Even the body is not really yours.
04:25It can deceive you and desert you anytime.
04:33What is the point in then remaining dependent on anything that the world gives you?
04:38Some ideology you are greatly invested in.
04:43Tomorrow you might find that ideology falsified.
04:47Or some concept, principle, dogma, anything you believe in.
04:54All those beliefs can be shattered in one minute.
04:58Therefore Vedanta teaches you to live only in that which is timeless.
05:05That which no moment in time can take away from you.
05:10That which is not a product of the world, that which is not arising in the stream of time.
05:16Therefore is unavailable to the world to blemish or time to destroy.
05:26It is untouchable.
05:29Why not live in that?
05:32And when you live in that then there is a great security.
05:35A great sense of security higher than all kinds of shallow self-esteem.
05:43It's confidence that we run after.
05:51And the confidence that you get when you are not dependent on anything is unmatchable.
05:59Is that not one of the mantras of today?
06:05Feel confident, act self-assured.
06:08But how can you act self-assured when like a puppet your strings are in 47 hands.
06:17There is no self.
06:20When you say self, you mean something original, something authentic, something of your own.
06:28If everything about you is being commanded by others, is dependent on others, then do you even have a self?
06:37Do you even exist?
06:40If you don't exist, what self-assurance are you talking of?
06:46The confidence that you have when you are not dependent on anything.
06:51When everything that you have or carry or are associated with is just something you take very lightly.
07:03Wear very playfully and won't be too sad or dejected or destroyed if taken away.
07:19Then there is an unspeakable pleasure in living.
07:29One cannot talk very clearly and convincingly of that freedom, that joy.
07:38It is only to those who live it.
07:44It is not a subject that you can hear of and judge.
07:51Are you getting it?
07:56And then do you not create Instagram reels?
08:02Then do you not relate to others?
08:05Then you do, but in your freedom.
08:08And these are two very different things.
08:11One is to create a video so that others may applaud.
08:15And the other is to create a video because there is already an inner reverberation.
08:24An internal applause constantly there.
08:29And out of that applause, the video is arising.
08:33Now you are not standing in front of your audience as a beggar.
08:39Please, please, please, applaud it, share it, like it, whatever.
08:44Make it viral.
08:47No, I'll do what I want to do.
08:50After that, if it does well, great.
08:54If it does not do well, still I'll continue to do what I do.
08:58Because my art, my creativity then is not arising out of a need to get fulfilled.
09:10It is arising out of an already fulfilled state.
09:15You get the difference?
09:18There is a creator or a writer or an actor or whosoever, anybody who does anything,
09:26who is acting so that he may gain something.
09:29And then there is somebody who acts because he already has everything in the psychological sense.
09:35From that internally fulfilled state, you get great pieces of creativity.
09:43The highest products of art, literature and science that the world has seen.
09:52Thank you. Thank you.
