Drake Maye Outplays Brissett in Preseason for Patriots

00:00Okay, so Gerard Mayo last night, final preseason game, said that Jacoby Brissette, the plan
00:09all along was for him to come out even though he was hurt and that, you know, he's the starting
00:13quarterback.
00:14And then this morning he went on a radio show, Jacob, saying that Drake May has clearly outplayed
00:19Jacoby Brissette.
00:20So I, you know, I don't know which way they're going to go here.
00:23It seems to me that Drake May is the starter.
00:26The guys here, we were talking about this before, Jacob.
00:28And my point was, is that I do think that that's going to end up happening.
00:32But Jacoby Brissette, Jacob, as you know, is a beloved player and a leader in the NFL
00:37for a long time.
00:39And so from a respect point of view, I think that that's probably what's going on right
00:42now is they're figuring out the right way to do this.
00:44But when you're so, you know, loved by your teammates and you're running the quarterback
00:48room, it's really hard all of a sudden just to go another direction.
00:51I'm going to guess they will.
00:52I don't know if it's going to be tomorrow or the next day, but a little bit.
00:56People are probably saying, Craig, what are you crazy?
00:58It's Jacoby Brissette.
00:59But that's the way I view it.
01:01I view this, you know, quarterbacks like this, they just want to make sure the right way
01:05is handled.
01:07I think you have a good point there.
01:09And I've kind of been in the camp all along that has thought Jacoby Brissette is going
01:12to open the season as a starter.
01:14And I still think even despite what Mayo has said about Drake May, and despite May really
01:20performing well and getting better as the preseason goes along, I think Brissette is
01:25going to open the season as a starter.
01:27And I think there's a very specific reason for this, and it has everything to do with
01:30the supporting cast around him.
01:32The Patriots offensive line is a mess right now, and it will get better when David Andrews
01:37is put in the game.
01:38But they've got guys playing out of position because they want the dairy and low, I think
01:43to be their left tackle.
01:44But when he's out, what they've had to do is move Chukso core for from right tackle
01:48to left tackle, move Michael when you from right guard to right tackle whole strangers
01:53out city.
01:54So has hurt his ankle in this last game, and he exited the game in a walking boot.
01:59So we don't know if he's healthy.
02:01So this offensive line could be extremely problematic.
02:04So I think Gerard Mayo might be saying, yeah, may might give us the best chance of winning,
02:09but we have to be sure he can be protected well enough, or he's going to turn into another
02:13Mac Jones or David Carr, someone of that ilk where you just don't want to stunt his development.
02:19So I think between that and the respect that you mentioned that Berset has as a long-term
02:24veteran, I think he's going to be the starter at the beginning of the season.
02:27And then if the Patriots struggle in the first three to four games, then I think they make
02:32the switch when the offensive line is a little healthier and has more continuity.
02:36But this one's going to be fascinating to watch because Mayo is kind of flip-flopped
02:40on his opinion in the last 24 hours.
02:42So really could go either way.
