Transcript
00:00Fifteen, Roberto Faggio, and alongside him at the moment is Giannini, who of course scored the only goal of the game in the previous match against the United States.
00:12So the match gets underway with Italy in the blue shirts and the white shorts, attacking from left to right, Czechoslovakia all in white.
00:20Berezi, and on the right, the skipper, Burgamy, winning tonight his 68th cap for Italy, played in the 1982 World Cup final as an 18-year-old.
00:34The Italian team took a lot of stick from their supporters and their media after their performance against the United States when they've been expected to score a handful of goals,
00:44but Giannini in possession now got the only goal of that game, and Italy really need to win back the favor of their fans.
00:52And that first early ball, won't do so. That foul does quickly turn against them here.
01:01Donadoni, eight minutes gone, it's nil-nil, a good-looking ball forward to Faggio.
01:06Berezi is forward with it, and Schilacci in the box, he turns it left to Maldini.
01:12In towards Schilacci.
01:15Oh, very very close to a goal, they really panicked at the back, and Nemecek was a very grateful man to see that fly just wide of the near upright.
01:26And really, the Italians caused panic in the Czech defense with that left-wing cross. Schilacci, with a lovely little header back in.
01:36Donadoni with the kick, Giannini's shot, Schilacci, yes!
01:55The noise is unbelievable in the Olympic Stadium.
02:00And Schilacci's done the job again. His second goal in the World Cup Finals.
02:07Yeah, this is a goalscorer's goal. Misfollowed it, but he's always anticipating Schilacci, makes, didn't take his eye off the ball.
02:15Comes in rapid. As I say, Donadoni, not the best technique in the world, but Schilacci anticipating the bounce,
02:20does what all the great goalscorers do, get goals from close range.
02:24Ten minutes gone and Schilacci has given Italy the lead, and we all remember in 1982 the way Paolo Rossi developed as the great goalscorer of that World Cup.
02:34I wonder if Schilacci will be the Rossi of 1990.
02:39What a start for him.
02:43And what a start for the Italians.
02:45Fantastic noise and atmosphere now in the Olympic Stadium.
02:49And Schilacci, with all the confidence in the world, turning away from Kinnear and winning the throw.
02:56Schilacci has already justified Vecchini's decision to pick him from the start.
03:03And one very worried man watching in the crowd, I think, will be Gianluca Vialli.
03:07Officially injured, but a suspicion that he's been rested.
03:12Schilacci again, look to come and meet that intended cross on the near post.
03:16A real instinctive goalscorer.
03:18Here's Paggio now, and Gautier gets Schilacci in a great position.
03:22And he could have had two in the space of a minute.
03:25Berti turning it right across the check goal, and Schilacci was no more than a foot away from making contact.
03:34Some start, there's great give and go on the edge of the penalty area.
03:37Berti slings it across, and there you see him, he threw himself at it.
03:42Fifteen minutes to half-time.
03:44Italy leading by a goal to nil.
03:46And a free kick here in a very dangerous position.
03:51Ferri will blast it at the wall, and straight through the wall.
03:54But luckily for the Czechs, Ferri's shot was watched all the way by Stajskal.
04:05Hit with real power. The wall didn't do a very good job.
04:09But Italy still virtually capped out in the Czech half.
04:12Di Napoli gets it back from Donovani.
04:15And Di Napoli's done really well.
04:17Di Napoli, Schilacci and Berti in the middle, over both of their heads.
04:21Baggio tries to bring it down, that's a save.
04:27Well, he could have really made a little bit of glory for himself then.
04:33And maybe wrong, he ought to have done.
04:35That was a chance.
04:36It was a chance, the lad was a bit unlucky with it, because he did a lot of things right.
04:41Kept cool, pulled the thing down.
04:44That would have been the world of good luck if he'd have got some young.
04:47And the shot at the other end by Moravcic, going nowhere.
04:52And Italy regain possession.
04:54Once again the highlights of it, when Italy do make runs from the deep.
04:57Look at this fellow now.
05:00Mrazzi, this time.
05:03Couldn't work the oracle.
05:04But Italy looking very determined.
05:07And a little collision in the middle of the field between Giannini and the number 15 Knier.
05:14I think virtually all of them, I mean Berti, Berti's made a few good runs.
05:18This one no issue.
05:19Watch Bergami, he's coming on the outside of this picture now.
05:21Little one-two, ball played inside.
05:23Bergami still going down the flank.
05:25And then we get the right back against the dead ball line.
05:28Good ball in.
05:30Control's quite good.
05:32They had a problem there.
05:34This is a far better start than they made to the 1982 World Cup, which they eventually won.
05:38In fact, they drew all their opening phase games then.
05:41Rolando in return for a danger here.
05:43And this could be number two.
05:45That's a fine save.
05:46Paggio denied again.
05:48Maldini in quickly.
05:50And that was good goalkeeping by Stescau.
05:52He really moved decisively where danger threatened.
05:56And Italy could have had a second goal five minutes before half-time.
06:00I don't think Scalacci will be too pleased with Paggio's contribution there.
06:04He was showing, standing square with him.
06:06Any sort of ball across the goalkeeper then, anywhere that's happened.
06:11Well, certainly Paggio's got himself into two good scoring positions.
06:14And really, not done very well either time.
06:20They know they're through to the second phase.
06:22And really, they'll have to do and probably will do a lot better in terms of when it gets into the knockout situation next week.
06:30Paggio making another fine run here into the penalty area.
06:33And Scalacci is forward.
06:38Giannini took it beautifully and Berti came through.
06:42And where did he miss?
06:45What a golden chance.
06:46But it was a great run to give him credit from a deep midfield position.
06:50If his finishing had been half as good as his awareness of the opening, Italy would have been two up.
06:55They really can't deal with it from midfield.
06:57I've said it before.
06:58Look at the power of the big man there.
06:59Berti.
07:00A little bit unlucky.
07:01The ball's going away from him.
07:02I suppose you've got to give the goalkeeper some credit though.
07:04That's about three good stops he's had.
07:06Otherwise, his side could be well down on us.
07:09Certainly has done well, Stace Cowan.
07:11That will confirm Don Howe's opinion that he's the man he wants at Loftus Road.
07:15Playing for Queen's Park Rangers in the English First Division next season.
07:20Kinnear to Weiss.
07:23Two minutes to half time.
07:24Italy leading one nearly.
07:25Could have been more than that.
07:27They've now conceded a free kick.
07:31The linesman, in fact, was overruled then.
07:33He had given the throw-in to Italy.
07:35That's why the crowd are furious now.
07:37And the referee overruled him.
07:39In fact, the linesman on that far side is George Smith from Scotland.
07:49The crowd will be even more furious if the Chefs can produce anything from this kick.
07:53In fact, it ended up with a throw to Czechoslovakia after all that.
07:58Here's Nemetchev.
07:59Weiss.
08:03Hasek.
08:06And well won back by Italy.
08:10Good play by Gladio.
08:11This is what the crowd wanted to see, but he overdid it a little bit.
08:16Now Moravcic.
08:20Hasek.
08:22Moravcic.
08:27Tackled by Maldini.
08:28The free kick given.
08:29I have to agree with the crowd on that one.
08:31Because that looked to me a good tackle by Maldini.
08:35The French referee didn't think so.
08:37Napoli expresses his views.
08:41Well, I thought he won the ball fair and square then.
08:45This could be dangerous because the Czechs have one or two very useful players.
08:51They scored a very good free kick against England at Wembley in their 4-2 defeat this season.
08:57And again the referee has produced a yellow card because the Italians didn't retreat.
09:01And that's one of them said something to him.
09:04I'm afraid the French referee in typically Gallic fashion tends to wave the card around
09:08rather than make it obvious which player he's actually cautioned.
09:11So I'm not sure.
09:21Now moving into time being added for stoppages.
09:28Bielek takes it.
09:29And Zenga is in exactly the right place.
09:34I think that's the situation exactly why the Italians need to really cash in on the chances they're making.
09:40Not his best free kick right down the keeper's throat.
09:43But it always shows.
09:44When the score's at 1-0, your heart's in your mouth.
09:47There's always going to be a chance where the Czechoslovakians could make a play.
09:51But really the Italians should be well out of sight.
09:54They should be winning 3-4-0.
09:59There's the clock confirming that we're beyond the 45 minutes.
10:02So this is what the referee's adding for stoppages.
10:06Berezi.
10:08Feri.
10:10Schiraci.
10:11Lovely little lay-off for Zahini.
10:14Try to thread it through to Baggio.
10:18Di Napoli misses it.
10:20Baggio doesn't.
10:22Donadoni in there now.
10:24Battling away with Weiss.
10:26Foul by the Czech player.
10:27Free kick to Italy.
10:28But in fact the referee has blown the whistle for half-time.
10:34The Czechs are, or have indeed, at the very last second there, made a substitution.
10:38I think Nemecek may have come off there.
10:40There was a bit of confusion on the bench as to the exact number to hold up.
10:45So it must have been a substitution made literally as the teams came back onto the field.
10:50We'll just check these come on for you in a moment.
10:52Czechoslovakia in possession now with Cadillacs.
10:55And it is indeed Julius Bielek, number 2, playing in the right-back position in possession now.
11:01So the Czechs did decide on a tactical switch because I didn't notice any injury to the number 20, Nemecek, during the first half.
11:11Italy leading by one goal to nil then.
11:16And as Ben Turner was saying, their whole history is of narrow wins.
11:21They very much regard the winning of points as more important than the scoring of goals.
11:26And who can blame them?
11:29Maradjic.
11:31Offside.
11:32Offside.
11:37The big problem they've got though is that they should be 3 or 4-0 up.
11:41Living at 1-0 up can be a little bit dangerous.
11:43His deep midfield role, as he's done so effectively throughout this game.
11:47Acek turning it forward, Bergamy's header drops neatly for Weiss.
11:51Quickly surrounded by Blues shirts but still finds Mockley Cech.
11:56Czibornek with the shot.
11:58Oh and Zinga saw it coming very late and that was a good save.
12:03Well I must admit these shots certainly caught us all by surprise.
12:07It was hit with kind of languid ease by Czibornek from that position.
12:11And Zinga seemed to respond to the danger very late.
12:15Whether it dipped or not, we'll see now perhaps.
12:18Certainly did.
12:19Somebody that's desperate to claim his place on a regular basis.
12:24Di Agostino.
12:27It's a good looking cross as well.
12:29Kadlec was on the end of it.
12:30Now Giannini.
12:33Schilacci.
12:35Still Schilacci, is that a penalty it is?
12:39Or is it?
12:40No, the referee pointed but then indicated that he felt there'd been a dive.
12:47And instead of a penalty, it's the Czechs who get a free kick.
12:51And that has got to be a controversial decision and Zinga certainly doesn't agree with it.
12:56Well.
12:57I felt that was a penalty.
13:00Perhaps the amateur dramatics have cost him a penalty.
13:03It definitely, it really anticipated the chance brilliantly.
13:10Four, five players waiting on the edge of the Italian penalty area.
13:13But Berti is the man who makes the interception.
13:16And a counter-attack right here.
13:17Schilacci's got pace.
13:19He could go all the way here.
13:20They wouldn't give up.
13:23Now is that a penalty?
13:25No.
13:26Schilacci denied again.
13:28The French referee.
13:31And Mr. Schilacci are not the best of friends.
13:34It was a marvellous run by the little man.
13:36So strong in possession.
13:38We didn't quite see the challenge because the free kick's already been taken.
13:41And Scuravi has belted it away.
13:44Well done.
13:45I think the referee's made a good decision there.
13:46Once again, brilliant front play.
13:49They showed a facet there.
13:50We've seen how sharp he is.
13:53Here he goes.
13:54You see his pace now.
13:55He's outstanding pace.
13:56We've just before just seen glimpses of sharpness.
13:59Turns inside the defender brilliantly.
14:01No.
14:02He's definitely acted on that one.
14:03That's a good decision.
14:04He's like good strikers who plays just on side.
14:08I think the Italians have got something here.
14:11Baggio.
14:12Yet to prove himself.
14:13But he could find Schilacci now.
14:15Because Schilacci's in a great position.
14:17Now he gets him.
14:24Can you believe it?
14:27Inches away from a second Italian goal.
14:31Essex tangled in the back of the net.
14:33And if you give awards for goal line clearances, you'll get one for that.
14:38But here's Schilacci still in possession.
14:42Baggio.
14:45But he missed it.
14:47And Czechoslovakia somehow have survived.
14:51Giannini inches away from a goal.
14:55Baggio and Schilacci really involved in the build up.
15:00And Giannini desperately unfortunate.
15:03Essex made the save.
15:05Czechoslovakia helping it out to Bielik on that side.
15:11Into Griga.
15:131-0 the score.
15:1520 minutes gone in the second half.
15:21Skouravi coming on to the far post to meet it.
15:24It's a good header.
15:26Equalizing goal by the substitute Griga.
15:32Suddenly the referee is popular again.
15:34He's disallowed it.
15:40Well, we're just saying about when you're only one up, anything can happen.
15:44Good deep ball here to the back stick.
15:46This is a good header from Skouravi.
15:48Keeps the ball well in the box.
15:50Substitute Griga and doesn't...
15:53Not quite sure why that's been disallowed.
15:55It certainly wasn't offside. There's no doubt about that.
15:58As Skouravi headed it over, Griga came in from behind the defenders.
16:03Well, anyway, Italy are going to make a substitution during all that.
16:10Vjekovic coming on.
16:11Di Napoli going off.
16:13Pietro Vjekovic who plays for Sampdoria.
16:17And we can see again.
16:19Disallowed goal.
16:21I couldn't see a thing wrong with that.
16:24Skilacsi. Dispossessed by Bielek.
16:26But the little man gets in there to win it back again.
16:28And he's done so well.
16:29He's got to stay in the side.
16:31There's no question about that.
16:34Italy have solved the problem tonight with Skilacsi's performance.
16:39And here he is again.
16:40And he turned brilliantly away.
16:41And Baccio's in the middle shouting for it.
16:44Baccio.
16:45Berti.
16:47What a select.
16:49No goal.
16:51Has he met it?
16:52I'm sure.
16:54The hand of Maradona
16:56has been replaced by
16:57the hand of Berti.
16:58Doesn't sound quite so
17:00romantic, does it?
17:02On your feet, son.
17:03No goal.
17:04And a booking.
17:07Yeah, I think we see there the value again
17:10that the lad will keep talking about.
17:12Skilacsi.
17:14Beautiful skill.
17:15You see it coming up in a minute.
17:16Beautiful skill.
17:17He goes across the field.
17:18Rolls the defender brilliantly.
17:20Hits the dead ball and picks his head up.
17:22Chance for Baccio.
17:23Baccio volleys into the ground.
17:26Hasek leaves it to run on to Mravcic.
17:29And Mravcic tries to open up for the shot.
17:32But it's a knee.
17:33He just closed the door tight.
17:34Now Skilacsi.
17:38Giannini.
17:41The ball pushed up for offside.
17:42The check.
17:43Skilacsi's in an offside position if it's delivered to him yet.
17:46But still.
17:47Baccio.
17:48Oh yes.
17:51Oh yes.
17:52Oh yes!
18:09The goal all of Italy wanted to see.
18:12The man they wanted in the Italian team
18:14has delivered the goods in spectacular style.
18:18One of the goals of the competition so far.
18:20That ball was glued to his right foot
18:23all the way into the back of the net.
18:27This is something special Alan.
18:30This will do the lad a power of good.
18:31He's gone at the heart of the defence.
18:33He's actually checked for a minute
18:34to see whether he should play a ball into Skilacsi.
18:37But Skilacsi was in an offside position.
18:39You see at this moment in time
18:40Skilacsi has just come back onside.
18:42But he could have released the tumours.
18:43Hold on.
18:44Got his head up.
18:45And stayed very, very cool.
18:47That's a magical goal.
18:49Look at the response it's created around the Olympic Stadium.
18:53A magnificent goal by Roberto Baccio.
18:59The £12 million man they're calling in.
19:02An £8 million transfer fee.
19:04And allegedly £4 million into his bank account as well.
19:08Well, is anybody worth that money?
19:10Who knows?
19:11But at that instant
19:13nobody in Italy will deny him £20 million.
19:17What a goal.
19:18And Baccio and Skilacsi,
19:20the new Juventus combination in the Italian attack
19:24have done the business.
19:25A goal each.
19:262-0 to Italy.
19:30And the nation will believe now
19:32that those new stars
19:34will provide the platform for a real assault on the World Cup.
19:39Italy on home soil
19:41bidding to win the World Cup for the record fourth time this year.
19:46They and Brazil have won it three times each.
19:49The nation has believed all along
19:51that with home advantage
19:53and a very good team
19:55Italy could become World Champions.
19:58And they're on the rampage now.
20:00Berti.
20:02Into Baccio again.
20:03Cadillac denied him this time.
20:0512 minutes to go.
20:07Italy, 2-0 to the good.
20:10And the second goal was breathtaking.
20:16Here's Giannini.
20:20Wow.
20:22Remember Pele doing it once?
20:24Didn't come up for him either.
20:30Well, delight.
20:32Relief.
20:33It's all mixed up in the emotions there on the Italian bench.
20:37As Giannini tried to score.
20:39Back here on July the 8th.
20:41Seeing Puccini's team contesting the final.
20:44Whether they can win it or not is another matter.
20:47But I can't see anybody beating this Italian team.
20:50I really can't.
20:51That was a smashing effort, mind you.
20:54Ron, to me, they are the best we've seen as yet.
20:58Well, they've played excellent.
21:00They've played tremendous.
21:01They've played with the flair, the movement, the passing
21:03and the quality has been tremendous.
21:04We've seen great individual efforts.
21:08More so than the scoreline of 2-0 suggests.
21:18There's the final whistle.
21:20Italy move through to the second phase of the World Cup finals.
21:24And perhaps just as importantly,
21:26they will stay here in the Olympic Stadium in Rome
21:29for their next match in the knockout phase.
21:32They have beaten Czechoslovakia by two goals to nil.
21:36Szilagyi and Baggio, the two men the public wanted to see, scored the goals.
21:42Italy 2, Czechoslovakia 0.
21:45We'll be reflecting on the game right after this break.
22:06.
