00:00After a foul from Gareth
00:30The Brazilians almost exploding to life in the first 25 seconds there that would have gone in on 27 seconds and would have been the joint fastest goal in World Cup history and it gone in from Alamau and that's how close it was.
00:51Here's Dunga now in the midfield for Brazil, good ball for Jorginho on the overlap, Correca is in the middle so is Muller, comes across, Muller is in there, it drops and that could be an own goal against Lid Crossbar. What a start this is and then Correca.
01:05Well Costa Rica are living on their nerve ends.
01:09Almost an own goal, I think it was Gomez there.
01:12The Brazilians could be two up and we've only had a minute and 40 seconds. Look at this, he heads it away from Correca, almost into his own net. Don't think it was Gomez actually, I think it was Chevalier.
01:27Extraordinary incident, Canejo completely lost the cross.
01:33They've sent plenty of fellas up now, the big defender Moser is in there, Ricciardo is also a huge chap and he's inside that penalty area.
01:44And Canejo the goalkeeper having missed two crosses might be a little bit worried here and it's ended up round the back of the net and not in it as one or two Brazilian fans had hoped.
01:55And he was put under considerable pressure there, the beat of the drum but still nil-nil.
02:03He's got the ball control that they normally associate with Brazilian forwards.
02:10He certainly didn't do it there but here's another corner for the keeper, tested once more, comes out for Dunga.
02:17Cracking effort from the man from Fiorentina.
02:22Dunga who made his debut for Brazil against England three years ago, cracking it in to the man with the West German club again.
02:33Mourinho, patient build up for the moment, Mauro Galvão.
02:38Holding the man off and doing so successfully, there's the shot!
02:42Whistles wide of the left-half right, it took a deflection from Valdo's effort there.
02:47That's the most intricate build up we've seen and it was very positive and it nearly had a very positive end too.
02:56There we see, just came away.
02:58Dunga to Carreca that time.
03:01Still they close the spaces down.
03:04Alemão, only one man again inside the area, that man is Carreca, takes it on the chest, tries to squeeze it over.
03:10That was a fine effort really because he was shadowed all the way, Carreca.
03:15The man who's got 12 World Cup goals, just six fewer than the great Pelé but he couldn't add to the collection there.
03:22But it wasn't for lack of trying.
03:24It's a lovely ball in from Alemão and if you look at Carreca, he pulls away from his markers and he's just a little bit unfortunate there.
03:31Didn't get himself in an angle for having a shot.
03:34Quality striker.
03:38All credit to Costa Rica for closing them down.
03:42Alemão, threading it through for Valdo again.
03:45Dunga.
03:47Here's the fulcrum of the attack, Mauro Galvão.
03:51And again, a good cross this time and they could be in trouble.
03:55And a fine and firm header from Branco.
03:58Correio's positioning good as well, they line, that's alright.
04:01Branco trying to get his name on the score sheet.
04:07It's a nice little ball in here and Branco has followed up the attack, gets a good header in.
04:12Unfortunately or fortunately for him.
04:14Miller leaves it for Jorginho who's got the longer throw.
04:17Still only two men inside the penalty area though, a few just around it.
04:24And here's a chance and it's a goal for Brazil.
04:28The first goal.
04:31Miller gets the credit, it took a deflection.
04:34Correio has to pick the ball out of his net.
04:36He'll be disappointed, the fans certainly aren't.
04:39It's taken a long time in coming.
04:4132 minutes to be precise.
04:44Miller, the man from Torino, scores his first goal of these World Cup finals with the aid of a deflection.
04:53So some sympathy for Costa Rica there.
04:56The tall defender who got up to win it was Moser.
04:59But I don't think Correio would have been troubled apart from the deflection.
05:03It's an untypical Brazilian-like goal, it's a long throwing and he doesn't really hit the ball all that well.
05:08But sometimes you better be lucky than good and I think luck was on his side there.
05:13It's a breakthrough that Brazil wanted.
05:16Came off Montero and now I think this is going to be a test for the Costa Ricans.
05:21They'd survived so long and of course they've got to try and come and attack now.
05:28Change their thinking a little bit.
05:31But the Brazilian commentator is still going on about the goal, I think he's still shouting goal away to our right.
05:39He's got the great Peli sitting with him so Peli's eardrums are being absolutely battered at the moment.
05:47It's the Costa Ricans who'll be worried that they might take a battering I suppose.
05:511-0 Brazil in the lead.
05:53Miller the scorer.
05:55And now they come looking for a second.
05:58This is a dangerous period for Costa Rica.
06:01Branco stands on the ball.
06:03Still has the skill to get around his man, they like that.
06:06Dungar, Valdo, they like it if they get a second.
06:10And Miller was trying to get through.
06:12Not that time.
06:15Canejo guarding this near post.
06:18We've had the Brazilian committee meeting.
06:20They've sorted out what they're going to do.
06:23It just remains to execute it.
06:27It's like a combination from Valdo and Mozin.
06:31Valdo it was, fine save by Canejo.
06:34He saw it and he claps himself.
06:37Well he deserves the applause.
06:39Yes, tremendous save.
06:41He had some very, very good saves against Scotland but that certainly racks with anything he brought off in that game.
06:56There it is.
06:58He's got across his goal very, very well to get the ball away there.
07:02And it certainly excited that Brazilian commentator.
07:05Incidentally the scoreboard in the ground is crediting the goal to Montero as an own goal.
07:12I'm pretty sure that Miller will claim the credit.
07:15And Brazil are in credit to the tune of one goal.
07:19That one scored as we said by Miller with the help of a deflection from Montero after 33 minutes.
07:25The Brazilian flag's waving for the moment.
07:27But it's certainly not turning out to be an avalanche here.
07:29So halftime we'll hear the views of Sainz and Grivzi in just a moment.
07:34That's going to be interesting.
07:36Halftime then in Turin is Brazil 1, Costa Rica 0.
07:39Welcome back to Turin.
07:41You've missed absolutely nothing.
07:43The second half has literally just kicked off three or four seconds ago.
07:46Just a reminder for any new viewers.
07:48It's Brazil 1, Costa Rica 0 here in the Del Alpi Stadium.
07:52A goal scored by Miller for Brazil after 33 minutes.
07:56There are substitutes at the start of the second half.
07:59So neither Boro Milutinovic of Costa Rica nor Sebastiao Lazzarone of Brazil
08:04wants to change things around just yet.
08:06But Billy McNeil were interested just...
08:09Oh, we'll just stop and see what happens here though.
08:12The ball given away by the Costa Rican defender.
08:15And they've got three men up and around the penalty area.
08:18And acrobatically headed away by Montero.
08:25Forward again from Moser to Jorginho.
08:29Who had a very sprightly start to the first half.
08:32Alamau.
08:36Valdo.
08:38Again they're being forced backwards, the Brazilians,
08:41as they were for much of that first half.
08:44Dunga to Valdo once more.
08:47He's still got Jorginho outside him.
08:49Alamau feeds Dunga again.
08:52They've certainly taken the first sting out of the attack.
08:55Valdo trying to get on to the end of things.
09:00And again Costa Rica come away unscathed.
09:03Well, Billy, I can bring you in now.
09:05I think we were just conjecturing as to what might happen in the next round.
09:08When, of course, every time we try to bring you in,
09:11the Brazilians come away on the attack.
09:13Brago.
09:15And this is a better cross. It's beyond Cornejo.
09:17And it's put behind for a corner by Montero.
09:21But we're thinking, I mean, if England happen to come across
09:24Brazil in the next round, is this conceivable
09:26if they were to finish third in their group
09:28or the Republic of Ireland?
09:30There's not too much to worry about this Brazilian side at the moment.
09:32No, it's not one that would unduly upset you.
09:36I think they're a team that any of the British sides
09:39really are capable of giving a good game to certainly
09:42and perhaps even snatching the victory.
09:44They've not got the style and charisma of Brazilian teams of the past,
09:48but maybe they're just playing well underneath their ability just now.
09:52Here's the Brazil corner.
09:54Early tense moments and off the outside of the upright
09:57from Ricardo Gomez.
09:59Cornejo didn't get there for that one.
10:02Ricardo did.
10:04And just as in the first half,
10:06the Costa Ricans have made a bit of a dicey start.
10:08Yes.
10:10It's a well-flighted corner.
10:12And the big lad, Ricardo Gomez, gets up well.
10:15Very, very unlucky not to score.
10:18Ricardo.
10:20Fair challenge.
10:22Keep giving the ball away, though.
10:24That's a good turn.
10:26Lovely.
10:28Correia in the middle.
10:30He wants to do it all himself.
10:32Valdo.
10:34It's the best we've seen from him in the game.
10:36He flitted in and out a little in the first half,
10:38but that was the best of Valdo.
10:40He danced outside, inside the defender.
10:43It's just when it came to applying the coup de grâce
10:47he didn't quite match up.
10:49That's a bit more like the Brazilian style, isn't it?
10:51Cuts inside.
10:52Curved away from the goal.
10:54I don't think Costa Rica have had a shot at goals.
10:56They haven't.
11:00Tafarel has been a spectator, virtually.
11:03Valdo for Brazil.
11:05Ali Mahmoum making a run down the left,
11:07allowing Valdo to come infield.
11:09He's had one shot in this half.
11:11Here's Valdo!
11:13So unlucky for the second time in five minutes.
11:15Valdo, there is one man who does seem interested today.
11:17He's certainly come to life in the second half,
11:20and he's produced two good runs
11:22and one good shot,
11:24and one that he perhaps snatched just a little bit.
11:28To Dunga.
11:31Carreca.
11:33He's had a very quiet afternoon by his standards,
11:35but he's found Jorginho now
11:37and he's got the chance really to put in a telling cross,
11:39which he does do!
11:41Would you believe it?
11:43It's not going in today, is it?
11:45And Mila stands hands on hips
11:47and says, what more can I have done?
11:49Well, he could have put the ball in the net.
11:51He beat Canejo, all right.
11:53Good cross.
11:55Inch-perfect cross, John,
11:57and he should be doing an awful lot better than that.
11:59The goalkeeper seemed to get his hand to the ball,
12:01but that one should have been away, I think.
12:03And the fact they've got Romario and Bebeto
12:05in the squad as well to come in.
12:09But still the scoreline here.
12:11Oh, a dreadful back!
12:13Surely it's going to be two.
12:15No, it's not. Mila still can't get it through.
12:18I think Carreca against Sweden might have scored.
12:20Today it wasn't to be.
12:22It was an awful backpass.
12:24And we've seen one or two backpasses
12:26go adrift in this World Cup.
12:28That was a wretched one.
12:33Lyons says the ball has gone out of play.
12:35But really, Brazil should have been so far ahead
12:39of Costa Rica in this match now.
12:41Credit the goalkeeper there.
12:43He managed to get his hand to it.
12:45He didn't foul Carreca.
12:47Got in the eye of Roy Myers.
12:51Carreca.
12:53Alimão.
12:55He has a bit of room, but he's got no support particularly.
12:57Alimão might have to do it all himself here.
12:59Great run from Alimão.
13:01Terrific run. Fine save as well.
13:03And then he's eventually put behind.
13:05But they've been at their most dangerous in this half
13:08when Valdo and Alimão, who now smiles.
13:10A moment ago he was grimacing.
13:12But that's when they've looked good,
13:14when they've gone on their own through the middle
13:16and been willing to take on the defenders,
13:18as Alimão did there.
13:20Yes, I think that's correct.
13:22And equally we've got to remember
13:24that perhaps Costa Rica is feeling the pace
13:26just a little bit now.
13:28They've defended well, but they may well,
13:30just at this time, be that little bit tired.
13:32And they're giving Brazil just a bit more room.
13:36Second substitute.
13:39Silas will come on.
13:41In place of Valdo.
13:44I think the referee wants to get on with the game first.
13:48Can Brazil get a second goal?
13:50Driven in and punched over the top.
13:53Cornejo ends in his net.
13:55It's the best moment of the half, really.
13:57He really did welly that one in.
14:00Branco it was.
14:02And Cornejo keeps his line intact again.
14:09Referee already having a look at the watch.
14:12And I think he's about to put everybody
14:14out of their misery here in Turin.
14:16And it is just about misery all around.
14:18A totally unconvincing performance
14:20by the Brazilians.
14:22They've beaten Costa Rica by a single goal.
14:25Those fans very unhappy indeed.
14:28Only the solitary strike by Miller
14:30after 33 minutes
14:32has confirmed the two points
14:34that we always expected Brazil to gain.
14:36Moral victory goes to Costa Rica.
14:39A 1-0 scoreline for them
14:41was far better than they could possibly
14:43have expected.
