00:00and uh we now have a full check on the two lineups bonner who made that memorable penalty
00:07save against romania chris morris hasn't been training much with a damaged anchor but he's in
00:11the team so is steve staunton taken off in the last game mccarthy the captain as i said at the
00:16back partnered by kevin moran they've been very solid paul mcgrath in midfield ray houghton to
00:24his right andy townsend the other central midfield player john aldridge will of course
00:30be up front he's been taken off in every game so far sheedy will be on the left
00:34and up with aldridge niall quinn scorer against holland and there's the man himself
00:45the italian goalkeeper zenga has registered 778 minutes of that time
00:51personally without seeing the ball go past him so he's on his way he hopes towards a record
00:57in fact one of his predecessors dino zoff did a lot better than that on one occasion
01:04will bereza's uh composure be disturbed tonight at the back i wonder bergamy the captain
01:09di agostini left-sided number four from juventus ferry is number six the other marker at the back
01:15maldini is the left back we're in seven there's just one change here really dinapoli stays in
01:21giannini is still there he's played about 30 odd consecutive games baggio is up front again
01:27but donadoni is back and the man he's replaced is bertie
01:32who is suspended shiraki and the coach vicini
01:38as we look at the irish bench first you'll see ronnie whelan's name there tony cascarino who has
01:43uh italian ancestry david o'leary who came on and put away the penalty that mattered and john
01:49sheridan's there as well now then vialli is on the bench number 21 with ancelotti number nine
01:54there's some powerful presence there serena indeed who scored against uruguay is also a substitute
02:07portuguese referee took charge of the argentina-romania match in naples earlier in the competition
02:15so italy playing from right to left here's schilacci straight away to baggio
02:19number 15 number four di agostini left side of midfield offside schilacci
02:25so
02:35just for the record this is indirect because italy did slot one straight in the other night and then
02:39of course saw the referees arm raised george courtney it was then but they wouldn't probably
02:44put one straight in from there although uh ferry might like the ball just tapped to him here by
02:48giannini and it was and ferry shoots and why slight deflection on it somewhere
02:56and i think it was an irish one so it's a corner
03:03maldini and bergeni have come up from the back
03:10di agostini giannini
03:12di agostini good defending by quinn he's trying to run off that knot this is uh sheedy
03:23forward by morris
03:32out
03:35morris to his right quinn and aldridge waiting for a cross she is there too
03:40out still a chance to get the ball in perhaps but he hasn't taken it and it was di agostini
03:48who got the ball away it's as if jack charlton and morris setters are actually playing they're
03:51up on their feet shouting all the time and uh in contrast vicini the italian trainer is just
03:58seated quietly on the other bench wondering just how to cope with this unusual style of play
04:07mcgrath and here's quinn coming in for the header brilliant save by zenga
04:15proving himself to be possibly the best goalkeeper in the tournament
04:20and this was direct football for you mcgrath's cross
04:23the towering figure of nile quinn and a good save going to his left
04:27zenga who prides himself on this long run of clean sheets that he's had di agostini
04:38schilacci
04:42two headers to talk about there liam yes a good header there from schilacci he just flicked it
04:48and it just went past the far post thankfully for paki bonner
04:52good cross from di agostini and a little flick of the head there and it just went past
04:57well a great start from the irish team looking for a forward run from baggio
05:05just got a feeling schilacci is tangling with one or two of the irish lads off the ball maybe
05:10mccarthy this is uh berezi it was a tackle by mcgrath he's got the ball he's got the ball
05:16of the irish lads off the ball maybe mccarthy this is uh berezi
05:20it was a tackle and uh it wasn't appreciated this is donadoni
05:30but ireland just gave that one away di agostini who is possibly the only naturally left-footed
05:37player in the italian team they haven't got many and he normally strikes them
05:42rather nearer to the goal than that
05:47yeah jack absolutely hates that a pass in midfield by kevin sheedy cut out
05:51by di agostini and jack was gone berserk on the bench
06:08schilacci into the wall here he is again
06:12it'll chip back in and it's going to be a corner some hurry defending by the irish
06:18there schilacci was uh hunting inside the box it's been taken quickly dinapoli
06:24maldini and bergamy waiting for a cross maldini
06:31the best italian effort so far
06:33yeah a great header here by maldini he scored a few goals like this for ac milan coming late
06:37into the box and getting above the irish defense he just couldn't get above the ball there and
06:42keep it on target so i relieved bonner with 35 minutes gone here in rome and still the republic
06:50of ireland hold the hosts and favorites but bonner's kick is a poor one straight to donadoni
06:56but bonner's kick is a poor one straight to donadoni and offside offside baggio
07:04the crowd had started the celebrations but baggio's were cut short
07:10as the referee from portugal saw the linesman's flag
07:13and it was up early never any question about what he felt
07:19we didn't actually see the ball played in the picture but i suspect the officials are right
07:26baggio
07:30schilacci this is a promising move
07:35it's donadoni good effort oh schilacci goal yes there's a live score and it's schilacci again
07:45his fourth of the championship and he was so fast to see the rebound
07:50and
07:59totto schilacci has sent the italian crowd wild again
08:07the build-up by italy was good
08:11and the first shot was rifled in but bonner could only knock it back out he was on the ground really
08:16when schilacci put it in the far side of the net and 38 minutes gone
08:25the italians take the lead he wasn't comfortable once he'd made the save
08:33donadoni has the first crack with his right foot bonner blocks it and then it's schilacci
08:47and ireland find themselves a goal down with seven minutes to go to half time
08:53and it really came out of nothing it was possibly the best move the italians have had
09:00aldridge sheedy quinn's waiting in the middle they can get the cross in houghton's there too
09:08that was houghton baggio mcgraw in hard
09:14liam
09:18baggio
09:22oh good ball dagostini
09:26it's schilacci again and this time he got right underneath it
09:30it and wide-eyed he can't understand how yeah he doesn't mess about schilacci he shoots on sight
09:38and janini wasn't very happy here as you watch the ball come across from dagostini
09:43schilacci goes to hit it first time and janini standing behind waiting for a layoff not very happy
09:50actually they're using the left side with dagostini quite effectively because he's got
09:55crosses in from that position and schilacci was hunting again there for his second of the night
10:05and what would have been his fifth of the tournament the leading goal scorer at the
10:08moment in the world cup scuravi of czechoslovakia who of course got that hat trick of headers
10:16against costa rica
10:17he's got five
10:24oh what a mistake there and he's helping him not quite three italian defenders got in each
10:30other's way that's why zenga's angry nobody claimed responsibility and right on half time
10:35it nearly fell to ray houghton well that would have been the perfect ending to the first half
10:43of the republic because they played so well for over half an hour deserving the applause but then
10:49the italian flags came out when schilacci snapped up the rebound following bonner's save from
10:57donadoni's shot and at half time in the olympic stadium in rome it's italy won the republic of
11:06ireland nil well i reckon the irish can certainly consider themselves desperately unlucky don't you
11:13bob yeah a bit unlucky they played really hard they played well they put everything they possibly
11:18could into the game but i must be honest the italians have done too they know they've got
11:21a match on the hands and they've they've really had to work hard and of course the tempo has been
11:26so high in this particular match it's it's something really quick and sudden that was
11:30going to break it and that was it just a little break pad bonner not being able to hold the ball
11:34and schilacci been in the right spot and i mean it was quite a difficult thing to took it away but
11:38he took it away because he's so confident and they're all up tight so much it's such a terrific
11:43atmosphere here but the irish absolutely sensational and they have they have given the
11:48the italian defenders more than they've ever ever had to do in this tournament well we warned about
11:53that man schilacci right at the top of the program didn't we he is something else isn't he he's just
11:57busy he's bubbly he's fast he's like grease lightning he's obviously a quick thinker and he
12:02can sniff a goal and he was in the right spot and he didn't he didn't panic and he didn't try
12:06to hit it in too hard he just slotted it nicely he knew where it was going uh pat bonner was a
12:11little unlucky because he slipped it when he parried the ball out either we'll hear bob's
12:14view back at the ranch about that in a minute but uh he slipped didn't he and couldn't regain
12:18yes it was a half chance but i always say that all these italians in the middle of the field
12:24every one of them's capable of having a crack and and you've got to try and stop them from doing
12:28that if you can unfortunately they they broke very quickly from the right hand side of the
12:32field across to the left and the the irish players were just a little bit short in numbers and it
12:37caught them out unfortunately but they've still got a lot to play for in this match the italians
12:42all sweating like hell and and very very tired outfit they've got to work really hard to keep
12:48that lead now all right bob let's hear from bob and the boys now that's been theirs in the 1990
12:53world cup is it going to end here in the imposing setting of the olympic stadium in rome
12:58or do they have still more resilience to show us against these italians for whom this match
13:06is so vital they and their supporters expect to be not just in the semi-final but in the final and
13:15that's no foregone conclusion because even if they beat ireland they'd have to play
13:19argentina in naples and with maradona's home crowd so that's something that they would have
13:26to think about if and when they get past the irish but there's 45 minutes football here at least
13:32and we'll see if jack charlton's team can upset the favorites there's quinn and zenga prevents a corner
13:40so his record now 823 minutes unbeaten the team's 868 minutes without a goal going in against them
13:54so uh ireland will have to achieve what italy's opponents in their previous nine matches have not
14:02managed
14:09they're not they keep encroaching the irish that's going to be bookable very shortly
14:14they're nowhere near 10 yards schilacci oh it's crushed against the underside was it in
14:19the italians appeal and he shoots again and it wasn't in and schilacci can't believe it
14:26it was a tremendous free kick and nobody was and two of the irish players were nowhere near 10
14:31yards from the ball when it was taken but let's just see how close he was
14:41it's come back off the underside of the bar
14:46and there's the substitution taking place quinn has gone off
14:49and cascarino has come on for the republic of ireland
14:54and what the replay did confirm was that it certainly hit the bar and came out
14:59which will be of great relief to jack charlton's team it was schilacci again
15:05a lot of venom in that weather bonner got a fingertip there
15:10but it hit the bar and it came down either on or this side of the line
15:19so
15:25i can see jack getting very frustrated down alongside the bench there he wants the ball
15:29not long and knocked into the area and put the italians under pressure it might be now from
15:35moran but uh here's mcgrath that's his shot and it's curling away from paul mcgrath
15:43up winning his 41st cap tonight and a survivor with pat bonner from the last meeting between
15:50these two countries paul mcgrath who hit this shot was in february 1985 in dublin
16:04and cascarino up with zanga
16:09staunton
16:11mccarthy is still very well forward here number four and he's got the header on
16:15and houghton's in there offside offside john aldridge wouldn't have counted
16:22yes a really good spell by the irish team here
16:27if we get the chance to see the replay there i think you see ray houghton
16:30tried to head that across the box to john aldridge oh i don't know i don't know
16:34oh i don't know i don't know it's another one that you can discuss all night i think
16:45we've only got two strikers in the irish half and serena has managed to help the ball on to
16:51the kick on the ankle to diagostini but the referee has penalized the challenge it's a free kick
16:58and it looks as though aldridge will be the player
17:00to be oh and there's a chance for serena and he's put it wide
17:07what an opportunity to clinch the game for italy
17:13as he did against uruguay it's a good ball chipped in here but serena was well away from
17:20the goal with his header and there's the substitution sheridan for aldridge with 12
17:26minutes to go but italy should have locked it up there really without question
17:33diagostini
17:40and with baggio and giannini off there's chance for serena good save by bonner he's kept ireland
17:47in the world cup for a few minutes more at least and serena sees a second opportunity go away
17:53brought on as a substitute he's had two chances
17:58to tie up the semi-final place for the italians and he hasn't taken either
18:02credit to the goalkeeper there berezi
18:14fairly harmless seven minutes left of the 90 one nil to italy but
18:22they will feel serena should have made it to
18:28cascarino trying to find townsend who's pushing up a lot more now that aldridge has gone off
18:35morris
18:38houghton
18:42morris and cascarino here not well marked heading it back across the goal and out by berezi for a
18:49corner zenga stood where he was never looked like coming off his line
18:59this is the sort of ball that the italians are finding so hard to
19:02deal with it's cascarino look at the marking it was non-existent
19:07and listen to the irish supporters now sheedy with the corner
19:19and cascarino heads it back to sheridan
19:24morris
19:30and to raise he called upon again
19:34italy can't get out their own half
19:38houghton
19:44and they won't do unless they get more players up to support this man
19:47but it was a brilliant turn serena
19:52donadoni's one is over on the right wing takes on staunton
19:58still donadoni outs i had him with skill actually good interception but he'll have to be quick
20:02and schilotti came in on moran
20:09and there are around five minutes left here in rome he's gonna have a i'm gonna have a little
20:14bit of a bitter taste in my mouth because of the way the referee has handled this game
20:19he'd be probably overstating it to say we were robbed or we've been robbed but certainly he's
20:24influenced the game in the italian to the italians in any way he could
20:31it may not be over yet leon this is shady
20:37and so it is again but there's a break on here now can he get schilotti through the center he can
20:43but he's offside and i think there vicini's got off the bench and rushed up to the linesman
20:50the crowd only just appreciating that it won't count but the italian coach really lost his temper
20:56there and went up to the linesman and shook his fist right in his face they feel they were robbed
21:01this time players gone on at the other end it's cascarino and it's shady
21:07and now it's zenga and the referee has pulled play back and ireland may have a last chance here
21:14there was a foul
21:19well there'll be a storm of protest from the italians in a minute when it all settles down
21:23about that uh schilotti decision but can the irish force this game into extra time in what is already
21:33extra time in what is already stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes
21:42it's townsend and shady on the ball
21:48sheridan
21:52and i think he's going to let them take it again encroachment
21:58didn't blow his whistle i don't think he was still getting the wall back
22:01what he's giving ireland every chance now liam i think i don't know what he's trying
22:04to level it up or what after what you said but uh the italians are so tense down there
22:15it's shady and mccarthy's come up at the back and it's been cleared by ricardo ferri
22:23and the referee has blown and italy are through to the semi-final of the world cup
22:28and the republic of ireland go out in a gallant storming fashion having
22:36had much of the second half and its relief on the italian faces as well as delight
22:43they were given the hardest of games here and although they can now celebrate in front of
22:50their own supporters they may not find more awkward opponents in this world cup than jack
22:57charlton's republic of ireland it was never anything other than difficult for italy
23:05and although they will look at two chances late in the game when they could have made it two nil
23:10there were moments earlier when zenga was a very relieved man as indeed was vicini the coach
23:18wonderful scenes in the crowd here the flags being waved as the republic of ireland supporters
23:24give their team the sort of farewell that jack charlton and these men deserve
23:29they've been an asset to this world cup for their dogged determination and their resistance and their
23:36and their application in the way that they wanted to play and other teams have found it mighty hard
23:42to break them down and the only man who really did so tonight was schilacci who has scored goals
23:48who has scored goals now against austria czechoslovakia uruguay and perhaps the one
23:54that his teammates would appreciate most against the republic of ireland the goal that won this
23:58quarterfinal and they have nothing to be ashamed of and plenty to be proud about
24:06bonner and his men and they've given those supporters two weeks and more of real pleasure
24:15their first ever visit to the finals of the world cup and they've distinguished themselves
24:19and won many friends but as they say in football the result is what people will remember
24:29and jack charlton's team were defeated by a single goal scored by schilacci after 38 minutes of the
24:37first half and it's that goal which takes italy the hosts and many people's favorites
24:44into the semi-final in naples against argentina
24:48on tuesday night but our hearts go out to the republic of ireland
24:57it's been a magnificent night here the irish will be very proud of that performance they
25:01brought a special magic to the occasion bob i think they're absolutely sensational and made
25:07the italians at times look really ordinary but i think the irish can be really proud of
25:12themselves the country can be proud of them they they couldn't have given any more to the manager
25:16i mean i'm very pleased for our jack personally but i've got to say this his team the players
25:23they gave 100 and i mean it's it's criminal that they haven't had something to show for it
25:29i was a bit disappointed with the officials i thought that every time there was an aerial
25:34challenge you penalize the irish in one form or another and of course that didn't that didn't
25:39help the irish because the need to win free kicks the need to get near the box to create the problems
25:44but they were absolutely sensational and played good football it wasn't a case of just knocking
25:48long balls up it was very thoughtful and the italians will be glad to have that one out of
25:53the way that's that's the hardest match they'll have in this world challenge jack will stay in
25:56the job won't he well i hope so i hope so it's i don't think you can follow this really there's
26:02not much else he can do um i mean they're making a saint in ireland but it's been absolutely
26:08sensational performance
