00:00It's a beautiful stadium, but the commentary positions are down fairly close to the touchline.
00:05The sky is as black as your hat, just above us.
00:08You can see they've put plastic covering over some of us, but not over all of us.
00:12But away we go. That doesn't really matter now.
00:14We've got another World Cup game on our hands.
00:16The West Germans in white attacking, and that's what I imagine they'll be doing most of the evening,
00:21attacking the goal to our right.
00:23Here's Thomas Berthold for them.
00:25Just as soon as we get a moment, I'll give you the two teams.
00:29Here's Berthold, Reuter, and to Berthold again.
00:34Hessler's come off his man as well.
00:39Hessler, Reuter, this is Buchwald, the big defender.
00:45And so far, the Emirates really haven't had a touch of the ball.
00:48But what is the point?
00:49They've pulled everybody.
00:51Are their number 10, Tagliani, back behind the ball?
00:59And at last, they've got a touch. Momentarily, at any rate.
01:07And eventually, they will get it back in possession.
01:12A game that's live on ITV, brought to you in association with National Power this evening.
01:18A free kick to the West Germans.
01:23Mateusz brought down two fabulous goals he scored against Yugoslavia.
01:28And even this early in the tournament, very much in the running for man of the tournament.
01:32An absolute inspiration for the West Germans through the midfield.
01:36Andreas Bremer with a left foot that's made in heaven.
01:41With the free kick now for the West Germans. Curled in there.
01:44And two went for it, including Rudi Völler, including Buchwald.
01:48Neither could quite get a touch.
01:50And the Germans were denied that early goal.
01:54But I just feel that the Germans, they play a different type of football to the Italians.
01:58Whereas the Italians prefer to play on the counter-attack, the Germans do throw more men forward.
02:03And I honestly believe that the most the Emirates can hope for today is a respectable scoreline.
02:07Well, here's Mateusz into Rudi Völler.
02:10Still with Völler.
02:13Some great work in defence there by the Emirates.
02:16And Beckenbauer stands and wonders how it is in these opening minutes.
02:20The West Germans haven't got a lead.
02:22But Farage with some terrific work there after Völler had had his shot.
02:31Great run again by Mateusz.
02:34Inside to Rudi Völler.
02:36Suddenly the way it was open for him, it bounced nicely for him there.
02:39And the keeper did well at point-blank range.
02:42But as I've said before, there are so many tripwires in this World Cup.
02:46Costa Rica brought one with them, the Gypsies brought one with them.
02:52Cameroon's brought two.
02:54And again the keeper there.
02:55Klinsmann!
02:57Just wide.
03:04Well, they've made three excellent chances in the first six minutes, the West Germans.
03:08And you wonder just how long the Emirates can hold out.
03:11Klinsmann no more than a foot wide.
03:16Keeper half got to it.
03:17Couldn't hold it.
03:18Klinsmann couldn't finish it off.
03:23Kessler gets it away.
03:24Mateusz.
03:26Klinsmann.
03:26Mateusz.
03:27Good, simple passing movement with a lot of pace though.
03:31Making good progress.
03:32Mateusz here on the right now for the West Germans.
03:34The cross comes in.
03:36Might be for Klinsmann!
03:37Saved again!
03:39And knocked over the top by Völler and another chance goes away.
03:43Well, at this stage of the night, maybe they can afford to smile and shake their heads.
03:49But that's at least four excellent chances.
03:52And if the finishing had been a little more clinical,
03:54that was just bad finishing by Rudi Völler.
03:57If the finishing had been a little more clinical,
03:59it could have been 4-0 by now with 11 minutes of the game gone.
04:03Thomas Berthold now to Bremer.
04:09To Völler.
04:17To the byline!
04:18And Klinsmann over the top again!
04:32Klinsmann was Inter Milan's top scorer this last season with 13.
04:36Most of the matches played on this ground,
04:38but he just can't remember where the goal was at the moment.
04:48Bremer.
04:49For West Germany.
04:52Curled in again towards Klinsmann.
04:55This time Klinsmann will get there!
04:56No!
04:57Against the post!
04:58He'll have another goal.
05:02Came off Abdelrahman.
05:05And it just won't go into that net.
05:09Klinsmann had done all the work there.
05:12He'd actually got round the keeper as well.
05:14Yes, though.
05:22Again, starting from Bremer's cross.
05:26Klinsmann shaking off his man, going round the keeper.
05:29Off the post.
05:33I think what hasn't helped is that just to bring you up to the game,
05:36to date with the Stormer game, which has now had its effect,
05:39I think, on all the television monitors in the television commentary area.
05:44Everybody's got a blank screen in front of them.
05:48But here's Klinsmann.
05:50And at last, they've put one in the back of the net.
05:53Rudi Völler.
06:02Well, it was a clumsy sort of goal,
06:05but it's one that the West Germans have waited with growing impatience
06:09for 36 minutes to get.
06:12Klinsmann's work.
06:14Völler's finish.
06:161-0 to the West Germans.
06:18Trevor Francis.
06:20Yes, good little boy from Klinsmann,
06:22waiting for Völler to get in front of his marker.
06:24Völler was first to the ball and just clipped it past the keeper.
06:321-0.
06:36With 36 minutes of the game gone.
06:48Kessler.
06:49Now, will that open the floodgates?
06:51That's a very appropriate phrase on a night like this.
06:54Bremer.
06:57Kessler.
07:01Berthold.
07:02To Reuter.
07:03To Reuter.
07:04The two front men are waiting in the middle again.
07:08And it's another one, this time by Klinsmann.
07:13Two goals in 90 seconds.
07:16The floodgates have now opened.
07:18And West Germany are easing themselves into the second phase.
07:23Trevor Francis.
07:24Yes, it was a good run down the right by Reuter.
07:27He plays a great ball to the back post.
07:29And Klinsmann completely unmarked.
07:31But that's a terrific downward header into the far post.
07:34To the far corner, I should say.
07:37The keeper has absolutely no chance.
07:44German flags are waving right around this stadium now.
07:47As we were saying at the start, it's virtually a home match.
07:50This could be the Olympic Stadium in Munich.
07:54The noise and the passion all coming from the West Germans.
07:59There's Bremer now.
08:01Finds MatthÀus.
08:05To Bremer again.
08:08The two strikers have got one apiece.
08:10There's Rudi Völler looking for another one.
08:12But this time the whistle has gone.
08:13It's a free kick to the West Germans.
08:15On the edge of the box, Klinsmann is down.
08:18Well, halftime has come.
08:20Well, halftime has come.
08:22And the West Germans leading, predictably enough, by two goals to nil.
08:26Rudi Völler after 35.
08:29JĂŒrgen Klinsmann after 37.
08:31Halftime then here in Milan.
08:33West Germany 2, United Arab Emirates 0.
08:36But not when it's been raining most of the halftime as well.
08:39No, we're still pretty saturated here.
08:41The Germans have brought Pierre Litvarski on and taken Thomas Baird's hold off.
08:46Litvarski, who's a lively little customer, plays just behind the strikers.
08:53And a very experienced player.
08:55Played in the 82 World Cup final.
08:57Was in the squad for 86 as well.
09:03Emirates playing it forward again.
09:06Here's a great chance here for them now.
09:09They meet.
09:10Well, they've whacked one in there.
09:12The number 8, Mubarek.
09:17Of all the things, it was Kessler standing only 5'4".
09:23Who was the last defender.
09:25And quite simply, the ball bounced over his head.
09:28And Mubarek was there.
09:30And had so much time, you could hardly have believed how much time he had.
09:34And brings it back to 2-1.
09:35Just look at that.
09:36That's incredibly bad marking by any sides, by any standards.
09:40Let alone West German standards.
09:42The ball beating Kessler.
09:44And eventually then beating Ilgner to make it 2-1.
09:48Trevor Francis.
09:49Well, I'm sure the conditions played a part in that goal.
09:52The ball seemed to take off off the floor there.
09:54It completely deceived Kessler.
09:55It went over his head.
09:56But it was a good finish.
10:02Well, what's that going to do for us? Let's see.
10:05Mateos.
10:09Reina.
10:11Fuller.
10:15FPU.
10:18Bremer's cross in.
10:20Punched away and not terribly well.
10:22And a great save there from Kessler, by the keeper, Farage.
10:27Bremer with that left foot again.
10:29Mateos, this time it's gone in!
10:38That might have been a deflection on the way there.
10:40the way there, but Mateus struck it firmly enough and that makes it 3-1
10:50and Mateus's third goal of this World Cup. Trevor Francis?
10:54Yes, undoubtedly it was deflected and gave the keeper no chance. I'm sure the Amrits are
10:59absolutely delighted to have scored a goal here, but it could have been the worst thing they've
11:02ever done. Well they're complaining across there to the linesman, maybe they felt there was an
11:07offside in that situation and you can see the deflection came off the number two Mubarek.
11:18The score is 3-1.
11:22Two goals in the first three minutes of the second half.
11:33That's three goals now for Mateus in two games. You could say that he strikes quicker than
11:37lightning. Well he's an absolute inspiration for them through the middle of the field. He's
11:45so experienced, he's so full of running, he looks every inch of him a tremendous competitor and
11:51he's a great hero in this stadium. The Milanese just love the way he goes about his work
11:59in the centre of the field for Inter Milan.
12:07Off the way by Abdulrahman. Mateus again.
12:16Hessler. Litvarski. Now Bein. That's a fine goal.
12:27Uwe Bein. A scorching shot and the West Germans go to 4-1.
12:37Trevor Francis. No deflection, no worries about that one. That is a good shot from outside the box.
12:43All he's done there is hit the target and it's gone straight through the keeper's hands.
12:53His first international season and scores an excellent goal
13:01to give the West Germans a 4-1 lead.
13:07Oh that was good. Bein.
13:21Bremer. Buchwald. Fuller. Buchwald.
13:29Now Bremer with the cross.
13:34Mateus.
13:38And again Mateus. He looked as though he was out of that situation but he forced himself back into it again.
13:43What a good ball now for Vola. Klinsmann waiting in the middle. Litvarski with a shot. Well saved.
14:01See Litvarski coming on there. That's a great left foot.
14:07Vola. Off the crossbar. The flag stayed down. They looked for a moment as though there might have been an offside.
14:27But the flag stayed down as Bremer pushes it in again. Knocked away by Fanage that time.
14:31Adler-Rahman. Number 15 on the ball for JĂŒrgner. And suddenly Hildner has to come way out of his penalty area to get that one away for the West Germans as their concentration in defence lapsed again just for a moment. Mateus now to Bremer.
14:53Rudi Vola.
15:01Klinsmann in there. Bein in there. Mateus with the dummy and knocked in there by Litvarski. Came off the goalkeeper's chest and behind for the goal kick.
15:15Litvarski either sportingly capping the keeper for that save or more likely for the pass from Mateus that really got it going again.
15:23Reuter. Good foul. Played forward again. Bein to Klinsmann. On to the left foot. Saved but only half saved by the keeper but enough just to allow another defender to get in and get it away.
15:43Going towards Altagliani. Hildner in the touch with no chances. And a throw to the United Arab Emirates.
15:55To be taken by Litvarski.
16:11Vola. Off the post and went in. Well I wonder who claimed that one. It probably in the end went in off a defender. It was flying header by Rudi Vola. And it puts the West Germans 5-1 into the lead.
16:34Litvarski's corner. Vola's head up. Came off the defender and then in.
16:43Well Vola gets up well and the defender stops it but I'm sure that has to go down as an own goal. An own goal by Ibrahim Abdelrahman.
16:54Well there was a handball there as well to prevent the ball going into the net.
16:58I don't think Vola can claim that one. Bremer was very generous in the match against Yugoslavia but here's Vola again there once more. Now will that just creep under the crossbar? No it won't.
17:13Just under a quarter of an hour now to go. And the West Germans have reached five. And are truly on their way now into the second phase.
17:28What are your feelings overall about the game and about West Germany Trevor as we come to the last few seconds now?
17:35Well trying to judge the day is very very difficult because it's been so easy. But I think we all know that the West Germans are a very very strong side and they can obviously go all the way to the final.
17:47Well Franz Beckenbauer retires from the management of the West German side at the end of this World Cup.
17:56Stories in the newspapers today that one he might be taking over as the overlord in American football. He might be coached to Inter Milan. He might be coached to Bayern Munich.
18:06I think the odds are he might well take a commercial job inside the German FA. He's clearly going to be a man in demand. He's clearly got together a very good West German side here once again.
18:18Every time the World Cup comes around you have to look and worry and wonder about the West Germans.
18:23Swept here to Bremen. Andy Bremen now. There's the cross. Towards Bayern on the far side. In goes Voller with the header too.
18:35Knocked down to Matheus looking for another slice of the action. But again the Emirates get it away. Look at Hildner way out of his goal here.
18:43Time enough to play it wide to Alcantara. And then to Reuter. Play to Litvarski. Inch perfect that one. Now in the last seconds of the game it almost came through to Riedler.
18:58Matheus. Bremen. Hessler. Voller back to Hessler. Riedler's waiting in the middle.
19:12Cleared without great conviction there by the United Arab Emirates.
19:18Juma. Bremen. Alcantara. Hessler. Matheus. Stringing some fine passes together now the West Germans getting it in once more. But that's the final whistle.
19:39West Germany go into the second phase of this 1990 World Cup. Their form remains impressive. Their goal scoring also.
19:49Four goals against Yugoslavia. Five here tonight in Milan against the United Arab Emirates.
19:55Voller, Klinsmann, Matheus, Bein and Voller. Though I would question the last one whether that was not an own goal. With Mubarak having scored for United Arab Emirates. Five on the score here in Milan.
20:09And welcome back to the San Siro Stadium where West Germany threatened to break all sorts of scoring records tonight. They didn't in fact but they did give the United Arab Emirates a right good hiding.
20:28And they now lead the group with maximum points and an overwhelming goal difference of course. Colombia second now but with Yugoslavia next in line to meet the Emirates they must be favourites to finish second.
20:39Rodney Marsh I think a German team with possibly the most flair that we've ever seen.
20:43Yeah they played great and it wasn't a hard game for them but they did what they had to do and they put the ball in the back of the net and that's all you can say. Matheus was absolutely brilliant.
20:53I mean the number of times Brian Moore said Matheus why it's a Bremer was incredible.
20:58They said deflection he scored the goal again and he's the leading scorer at the moment. But the number of times that Matheus made the play was brilliant.
21:06Now this is the second goal Rodney and of course if it is credited to Voller then he will be joint leading scorer in the World Cup. What do you think?
21:12He looked over the line to me from the first but it's difficult to say. It was a handball and then the own goal so we'll have to wait and see.
