00:03CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:31Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:35Now, live music, gigs, great fun.
00:38Personally, I'm a bit too old for that sort of thing,
00:41but the story that I'm getting, Rachel,
00:44is that the price of a gig, particularly of big gigs,
00:48is rocketing. Rocketing, apparently.
00:51Mainly, I guess, because the big bands have got so much equipment,
00:55so many staff and all the rest of it,
00:57you have to raise the money to pay them, you know?
01:00But the small local gig, apparently, eight quid and you're in,
01:04hasn't changed over the years.
01:06But the big gigs, it's apparently that the rise has been extraordinary.
01:10But I don't go, and we were chatting earlier,
01:12it's not your thing either, particularly, is it?
01:14No, I love the theatre, comedy, football,
01:16but I don't often go to concerts, so I can't comment.
01:19The last thing I went to see at the theatre was Bill Bailey.
01:22Oh, you loved that, didn't you?
01:2420-something quid, great night out.
01:26Fantastic. Can't complain.
01:28I met somebody the other day I know very well
01:31and he and his wife were very lucky to be invited
01:34to, I guess, the sort of gig of a lifetime, really,
01:38and it was opera, it was Tosca, and it was the Royal Opera House.
01:42And onto the podium, as conductor, stepped Placido Domingo
01:47and apparently the roar went up and lifted the roof off, fantastic.
01:51But, of course, the trouble is that these things,
01:54it's so expensive that it's out of the range of most people,
01:58but he said he can die happy now, it was the most amazing night
02:02and he didn't have to pay the 200 quid a ticket or whatever.
02:05Well done him. Fantastic, fantastic.
02:08Now, who have we got back? We've got Amy, the giant killer.
02:12Amy Benfield, welcome back. Thank you.
02:15Came through... Just.
02:17..on a nerve-wracking crucial conundrum. Yeah.
02:20And expecting twins in two or three months' time?
02:23Yep, still expecting them. They're still in there.
02:26Try to hold on. Yeah, I will.
02:29And you're joined by Anthony O'Sullivan from Poole in Dorset.
02:33Welcome, Anthony. You're a volunteer worker
02:35and you were helping out with the crowdfunding
02:38and the production of two little short films.
02:41What was the subject matter?
02:43Well, the Spanish one I've dealt with, it's just in Spanish language,
02:47that's about 20 minutes, and it's just a beautiful little love story.
02:51And the second one I've just literally got involved with
02:54and I'll be meeting the filmmakers soon.
02:56Fantastic. Well done.
02:58Big round of applause for Anthony and Amy Benfield.
03:04And Susie's in the corner, sitting next to the great Barry McGuigan,
03:08former champion and now boxing promoter.
03:10Welcome back, Barry. Thank you very much, Steve.
03:17Mm. Amy. Off we go.

06:28Now, Susie, what's all that about?
06:30Yes, well, there is a tropical tree called a padauk,
06:34or padauk as well, which resembles rosewood,
06:37and the trees themselves are known as padauks.
06:41Padauks. Yes.

07:44No, let's stick with Amy then, even though it's badly written down.
07:48Go on.
07:50So eight divided by two is four.
07:53Eight divided by two is four.
07:55Times by the nine for 36. Yep.

08:53Moderator.
08:55Rachel, what have you been up to?
08:58I was stuck looking for 69, but if you ignore that,

12:07We got diverged and we've also got visited,
12:11which is seven as well, but nothing more.
12:15That's it. Susie?
12:17Yes, just in case anyone was wondering,
12:19you can have both strove and strived as the past tense of strive.
12:2428 to 14, and numbers.
12:27Anthony?
12:29Can I have three from the top and three of your choice?
12:31You can indeed. That mixes it up a little bit.
12:33Three big, three little.
12:35And for this round they are seven, six, eight.
12:39And then the big three, 100, 50, 75.

13:01MUSIC STOPS
13:19Anthony?
13:21418. Not written down.
13:23One away. How about Amy?
13:25No. Lost it.
13:27Now then.
13:29OK, 75 plus 7...
13:3282.
13:34..times 6...
13:36Times 6 is 492.
13:38100 over 50 is 2.
13:40Yep.
13:426 times 2 is 12.
13:44You've used your 6, I'm afraid.
13:46Oh, bad luck.
13:48You were flying, then. Flying!
13:50But I bet Rachel could help us.
13:52479, Rachel?
13:54Yes, it was there.
13:568 minus 7 is 13.
13:59Add it to 50 for 63.
14:02Times it by 8 for 504.
14:05And then 100 minus 75 is 25,
14:09to take away from 479.
14:11Perfect. Thank you.
14:13Thanks, Rachel.
14:15And bad luck, Anthony.
14:17You were going to do some wonderful things there.
14:19But there we are.
14:2114 plays 28. You're still well within shooting distance.
14:25Mr Barry McGuigan, what have you got for us today?
14:28Well, I was talking the last time
14:31about my first...
14:34my world title fight against Eusebio Pedrosa
14:37in June 1985,
14:39and then I had to make a mandatory defence,
14:42so I fought Bernard Taylor.
14:46Every time I watch this guy, Nick, on television,
14:49he got better and better and better.
14:52He was fast.
14:54They called him the BT Express,
14:56and he had just incredible hand speed.
14:58I knew that the way to beat this guy
15:00was to put him under pressure,
15:02which was my style.
15:04So I sort of draw up a tactical plan,
15:07put pressure on him,
15:09and from the offset,
15:11I just jumped straight on him,
15:14and he moved and boxed around the ring,
15:17and I stayed on him, and it was a terrific fight.
15:20I won the first four or five rounds,
15:23but then I started to get to him
15:25and started to grind him down.
15:27I could feel...
15:29The interesting thing is,
15:31when you're right on top of somebody,
15:33and even though there are 7,000 people
15:35screaming their heads off
15:37in this sort of cauldron of an arena,
15:39you can hear them breathing.
15:41You can hear them panicking.
15:43So I answered that with even more pressure,
15:45and I finally started to wear him down
15:47with body punches,
15:49and he had great left hooks in the body
15:51in the eighth round,
15:53and he retired at the end of the eighth,
15:55didn't come out for the ninth,
15:57and I was so happy, I was so pleased
15:59that I was able to get rid of him
16:01and get over my first defense.
16:03But 416 fights he had,
16:05and he only lost on five occasions.
16:07So he really was a special talent,
16:09so I was very blessed that I was able
16:11to put him under pressure and get control of him
16:13and win the fight, so I was thrilled.
16:15That's amazing. Let's have a big round of applause.
16:2028 to 14. Amy on 28.
16:23Amy, you're back. Letters game.
16:25Thank you. Consonant, please, Rachel.

17:52Brutal, which is 6.

19:35Supertax. One word?
19:37That'll give you an 8. It is one word, yes.
19:39Another word for a surtax.
19:41We don't like talking about that.
19:43It's not a healthy language.
19:45Take that off the board, Rachel. It's a horrible word.
19:4840 plays 21, and it's Amy's numbers game.
19:53Two large and four small, please.
19:55Thank you very much.
19:57Two big ones, four little ones.

21:11Leave it with me.
21:13Certainly will. So well done, Anthony.
21:1528 now to 40.
21:17Well within shooting distance as we turn to our second Tea Time teaser,
21:20which is Lee's Cross.
21:22And the clue, Lee's Cross.
21:24The match had no goals and the film had no music.
21:27Lee's Cross.
21:29The match had no goals and the film had no music.
21:40APPLAUSE
21:47Welcome back. I left with the clue, Lee's Cross.

21:53In fact, the whole business was scoreless.
21:56Scoreless.
21:58But Rachel scored 438.
22:00438.
22:02A last-minute score.
22:04If you say 25 minus 7 is 18,
22:06times by 8 is 144,
22:09plus 2 is 146,
22:12and times that by 3 you get 438.

23:35Strong stuff.
23:36You're getting nearer, Anthony.
23:38Barry, what have you got?
23:40Well, we've got two great-sounding words,
23:43valence and lactone,
23:45and Susie's going to explain what they mean.
23:48Well, lactone I'll start with.
23:50It's just an organic compound, chemical compound,
23:52as you would imagine.
23:54And valence, originally they were ornamental drapery
23:57over sort of four-poster beds,
23:59but now we tend to have valences on our sheets.
24:01So we have nice, embroidered things that come over
24:04and hide the mattress.
24:06Right.
24:0740 plays 34. Look at this.
24:09Nothing in it. 6 points.
24:10Amy, protect your lead with this letters game.

25:27Panties.
25:28Panties?
25:29Panties.
25:30Panties.
25:31What else can we have?
25:32Setting the panties aside for a minute.
25:34LAUGHTER
25:36I love it.
25:38Er, sapient.
25:40Sapient, yeah.
25:41Yeah.
25:42And there's an even better one.
25:44Er, yes, there's a couple of 8s.
25:46Er, supinate, the opposite of pronate,
25:48so where the leg is the sole,
25:50or the palm of the hand is turned outwards or upwards.
25:53And spumante, the Italian sparkling wine.
25:57Oh, yeah.
25:58Very good.
25:59Well done, guys.
26:03Bubblings. Bubbles.
26:0547 plays 34.
26:07Anthony on 34, as we turn to Susie.
26:10Susie, what do you have for us today in your special, special slot?
26:15I have a couple of questions, actually, from viewers.
26:19The first is from Alison Gibson, who emailed in to ask,
26:22is there any reason why, when we engage in conversation with strangers,
26:26we are breaking the ice?
26:28So I'm going to start with that one.
26:30It comes from a Latin, medieval Latin expression,
26:33sindere glaciem, which meant to initiate a difficult undertaking
26:37by making the first move.
26:39So pretty much what it means today.
26:41And the earliest record that we have in the Oxford English Dictionary
26:44is a really interesting one.
26:46It comes from the writing of John Fisher,
26:48who was a Roman Catholic bishop.
26:50Now, he was executed by Henry VIII during the Reformation.
26:54And his account, before he was executed, obviously,
26:57of Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon
26:59includes the mention of a fellow clergyman
27:02who was brave enough to speak out about the marriage.
27:05And it says, his reverend father chanced to be one of the first
27:08that break the ice and showed the inconvenience that followed.
27:12Inconvenience being a bit of an understatement.
27:14So that one hopefully answers the question for Alison.
27:18And then the second one is from Nick Davenport,
27:20who asks where the strange word shoddy comes from.
27:23And that's a good one too,
27:24because if you're in the textile trade in the 19th century,
27:27you would know that woolen yarn obtained by tearing to shreds,
27:32just woolen rags that you might have picked up here, there and everywhere,
27:35and then adding some new wool to it, could be made into a kind of cloth.
27:40And that cloth was indeed called shoddy.
27:42And then in the US, it was used with reference to those
27:45who made their fortunes during the Civil War
27:48and got a contract to make this cheap kind of woolen cloth,
27:52not quite the real deal.
27:54Very good. Well done, Susie.
28:01She's wonderful. Susie is brilliant.
