00:09House of the Dragons Season 2 Episode 4 sees a major twist with Rhaenys with multiple factors

00:15included in her pivotal decision.

00:17The ending to A Dance of Dragons sees the Battle of Rook's Rest take place where Ser

00:22Criston Cole leads the Green's infantry force up the coast in hopes of blocking Dragonstone

00:28and Driftmark off from the mainland of Westeros.

00:31In doing so, he baits Rhaenyra's Black Faction into sending a Dragonrider to deter the invading

00:36force allowing Aemon Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar to strike.

00:40Ultimately, Cole's plan works out though not without its losses.

00:44Out of the many dragons in House of the Dragon, Vhagar is undoubtedly the biggest and most

00:49experienced.

00:50However, it faces off with Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon, Melis.

00:54Rhaenys and Melis have been bonded longer than any other rider and dragon alive during

00:59the dance and they put up a decent fight against the far bigger Vhagar.

01:03Aegon II and Sunfyre surprise everyone by entering the conflict and Rhaenys and Melis

01:09get the best of them nearly immediately causing serious damage to the king's golden dragon.

01:14Rhaenys Targaryen's death may have come as a shock to audiences, losing a key member

01:19of House of the Dragon's ensemble character cast midway through the season.

01:23The most shocking aspect, perhaps, is that after the initial confrontation with Aegon

01:28and Sunfyre, Rhaenys has the opportunity to survive with the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms

01:32having been sent to the ground, wounded and potentially dead for all she knows.

01:37But she turns around and takes another go at Aemon and Vhagar, seemingly resigned to

01:42her fate.

01:43There's a lot of potential opportunity here.

01:45Rhaenys knows Vhagar is a far bigger dragon than Melis, but she rolls the dice, ultimately

01:50doing quite well until she's taken by surprise on her eventual way out.

01:55This decision could have been made with the intent of essentially ending the war as eliminating

01:59Vhagar would crush the greens.

02:01However, Rhaenys' decision also seems to have an element of resignation and self-sacrifice.

02:07Rhaenys may see where the war is heading and consider it better to try and end the conflict

02:12there or at least end her part in it.

02:14Rhaenys' death has grander implications on House of the Dragon beyond just the loss of

02:19a main cast member.

02:21It's a huge blow to the Blacks, who are down one of their most powerful dragonriders, likely

02:25leading to them welcoming new riders to try and claim the untamed dragons on Dragonstone

02:31and Driftmark.

02:32In terms of Rhaenyra's council, she's lost one of her most avid supporters and this sows

02:37division between her and Corlys Velaryon, Rhaenys' lord husband.

02:41Rhaenys was the one who brought House Velaryon over to the Blacks in the first place.

02:46Corlys has been sceptical of Rhaenyra and Daemon since season 1, but will grow even

02:51more so going forward with the loss of his wife.

02:53He will likely blame Rhaenyra's inaction for Rhaenys' death, leading to inter-faction

02:58conflict among the Blacks.

02:59It will be fascinating to see where Corlys goes in House of the Dragon from here, as

03:04his decisions can be pivotal to the war going forward.
