00:00From the outside, this building with the signboard
00:05King Musical Industries Sindirian Berhad
00:08may not look like much, despite its regal name.
00:11But behind its humble facade, musical royalty
00:15the likes of Teresa Teng and Sudirman once recorded here.
00:19According to Ng Cheong Kien, CEO of King Musical Industries,
00:24the studio was started in 1963 by his father, Ng Lien Chin.
00:29It was initially used by artists under Life Records,
00:33a label also founded by his father.
00:37But Cheong Kien, who joined the business in 1976,
00:40later opened it to artists from other labels,
00:43making King Studio a notable name in the industry.
00:48Eventually, the premises expanded from two recording studios to five,
00:52all fitted with state-of-the-art equipment.
00:56Speaking with FMT Lifestyle, Cheong Kien's long-time assistant
01:00dropped names of other musical greats who once recorded at King Studio.
01:26Sadly, the business was rocked by turbulent times
01:29during the financial crisis in the late 1990s
01:32and the introduction of digital studios.
01:45King Studio seized operations in 2002,
01:48and today the studio spaces are rented out to various tenants.
01:53Among them is Teen Edge Malaysia,
01:55an organization that offers creative arts mentoring to youths,
01:59providing them with songwriting, music production and vocal training.
02:04More importantly, it keeps the place alive with music.
02:08For Cheong Kien, having young people exposed to music on site
02:13gives him a sense of hope for the future.
02:17That while the days of musical legends at King Studio are long gone,
02:22seeds of greatness will perhaps be sown in the next generation here.
