00:00Located in Batukaja Pera is this beautiful and rather mysterious looking house called
00:10Rumah 1916.
00:15As its name indicates, the house, which belongs to the Albakri family, was built that year.
00:22It has resolutely stood the test of time and, if its walls could speak, one can't help
00:28but wonder about the stories it would tell.
00:44Over the decades, it served as the family's residence.
00:48Many weddings were held in the house, its walls witnessing the joy and hope these celebrations
00:53brought.
00:55It also became a religious school, a boys' hostel, and several education establishments
01:00including the Public Commercial Institution and the Royal English School.
01:06From 1989 to 2001, the house was used to hold computer classes and even became a tuition
01:13center before becoming the residence of its then caretaker and his family.
01:19It even made an appearance in the 2006 Malaysian movie Goodbye Boys.
01:24Thereafter, the house seemed set to spend the rest of its years in solitude, a shadow
01:31of its former self, until Zahim and his siblings decided this wasn't going to be its fate.
01:38In April, they began restoration works on the house.
01:51They even held an exhibition, Kisah Kinta 1916, at the house in June to share its history.
02:05Once restoration is complete, Zahim and his siblings plan to use the house as an event
02:22space where, once again, it will be filled with much joy and laughter.
02:42The stories are important as well, you know, and that go with the history of something.
02:48It's not just about saving old buildings, it's also about knowing the history and knowing
02:53why things are the way they are.
