00:00Welcome back everyone.
00:06It is Amelia.
00:07I hope you are fine.
00:08Aemon Targaryen tries to kill his brother King Aegon to Targaryen in House of the Dragon
00:13Season 2 Episode 4 in a shocking twist that will have major ramifications moving forward.
00:19Although the show leaves it uncertain, I think it can be assumed King Aegon is not dead at
00:24the end of the episode.
00:26But nonetheless, he is going to be out of action for a while and there's a lot to unpack
00:30with what Aemon did and why he did it.
00:32The prince is no stranger to kinslaying.
00:35Of course, Aemon killed his nephew Lucys Velaryon in House of the Dragon Season 1 sending and
00:41he does actually succeed in murdering another member of his family here with the death of
00:46Rhaenys Targaryen with Aemon's dragon Vhagan biting off the head of her dragon Melys and
00:51sending them tumbling to their deaths.
00:53But it's attempted murder of Aegon that's more intriguing.
00:56The direct setup for Aemon attempting to kill Aegon came in the previous episode when the
01:01king found his brother at a brothel lying with SLYI.
01:05Aegon was quick to mock and try to humiliate his brother.
01:08And that happening to Aemon in the one place where he clearly allows himself to actually
01:12be vulnerable makes it a particularly damaging moment that would have left him wanting revenge.
01:18The truth, though, is that this runs much deeper and has technically been set up ever
01:23since they first appeared.
01:24The dynamic between Aegon and Aemon wasn't too different in their younger days.
01:29Aegon could be cruel towards his younger brother and mocked him relentlessly over his lack
01:34of a dragon more so than the strong voice Aemon called out.
01:37There are years of insults, slights, and a general resentment that have gone into this
01:41moment with Aemon finally getting his chance to take revenge upon his older brother.
01:46Aemon attempting to kill his brother is a brand new addition that does not happen in
01:51George RR Martin's Fire and Blood.
01:53The battle at Rook's Rest is a little more straightforward in the book with both Aegon
01:57and Aemon lying in wait as part of the plan and they use their dragons to attack Rhaenys
02:02together.
02:03All three crash to the ground, killing Rhaenys and Melies while Aegon suffers injuries and
02:08burns across his body.
02:09It is, of course, possible that is just how history presents it and that this is the truth
02:14of the matter that was covered up.
02:16Aemon may not succeed in killing Aegon but he does succeed in his goal of getting on
02:20the Iron Throne.
02:22In the book, Aegon's injuries keep him bedridden for around a year, often asleep and in need
02:27of milk of the poppy.
02:28Aemon takes his crown, the Iron Throne, and rules as Prince Regent in that time.
02:33That will include, eventually, he and Cole amassing an army to march against Daemon Targaryen
02:38and Harrenhal, though that may not fully play out until House of the Dragons season 3.
