00:00Sports might have been centre stage this summer, but now France's political future is the focus
00:06as the country awaits its new Prime Minister.
00:09The leftist New Popular Front alliance came out on top in July's general election, but
00:14without a clear majority.
00:17They've nominated Lucie Kerstet as their choice to head up the government.
00:21The senior civil servant is largely unknown by the French public and not considered a
00:25favourite in centrist and right-wing circles.
00:29But the clock is ticking, as the left-wing camp has underlined, saying Emmanuel Macron
00:34cannot hold up the country and its institutions any longer, and that he must recognise the
00:39results of the vote.
00:42He must name a Prime Minister from the largest representation within the National Assembly,
00:47that is, the New Popular Front.
00:50Familiar faces have also been tipped for the job.
00:53Former Conservative minister Xavier Bertrand, Bernard Cazeneuve, who served as François
00:58Hollande's socialist Prime Minister, and centrist former minister Jean-Louis Borloo.
01:04As the parties regroup for their political university summer sessions, negotiations and
01:09deal-making will soon determine the composition of the next cabinet, where issues like the
01:14approval of next year's budget will be top of the agenda, as France grapples with a growing
01:20public deficit.
