Newcastle United writers Dominic Scurr and Jordan Cronin discuss the Sela Weekender, and look ahead as the season begins.
Transcript
00:00I think you cannot fault what we've seen so far from Trevancy's Lucy turning around like he's still on the pitch
00:06But I thought tonight he was back to his is Jolinson best monster
00:11Looking at our start 11. There wasn't a lot of preseason minutes in that. No, okay now we've seen all of three seasons
00:16What's your opening opening preseason start 11?
00:20Oh
00:27Geordie journals back
00:29Isn't it? Isn't it a sight St. James's Park for first of two seller weekender games
00:354-0 win over Girona tonight Jordan. Yeah, Eddie
00:38How much the after waste he felt like that to put in a performance night because he didn't feel over very good
00:43And both of the Japan games and to be fair
00:45There weren't and it was because the humidity which Eddie our Eddie how rightly right speak
00:50Yeah, rightly pointed out. So no, that was Newcastle at the the best today was for the seller weekend
00:56I don't think it was the best opposition to be honest and I thought it would be star sugar in that first off
01:00They couldn't get anywhere near
01:02Newcastle and I think as good as Newcastle were for a top-level position to come here and allow that to happen
01:07I think it's really disappointing there for but give Newcastle credit. They were relentless and
01:12Attacking play in that first off there wasn't a bad performance out there really that I think every single attacker on our pitch
01:18Had an opportunity to score
01:20obviously Sean Longstaff end up getting these brace which really pleased with him because we spoke to him last week in in Tokyo or
01:27you did sorry and
01:29Yeah
01:30His isn't you after you would have seen the quotes on she was getting a castle world
01:33I think you say he's had a tough sort of
01:36Few months with the criticism about in last season
01:39He then openly admitted himself that he had fears that he might be sold the summer and he put in a performance there again
01:45Counting with a level of opposition. I thought was a really good performance not just only he's goes
01:49But I thought look really really fit as well and you go about the pitch very very well
01:53I'm not go to sort of heavy on it, but I think the associates all alongside for me and
01:58fits and physically very very good and he probably hasn't been that for a
02:03A while now because of his foot injury or the
02:07But for today again, I know it's only preseason was really positive play for him and then to go through, you know
02:12the attacking side as well and
02:15I'm three gold must probably come on him. Actually. That was the big one one
02:18That's the story of the night Anthony Gordy returned to training on Tuesday back straight in the starting
02:2411 tonight on the left wing and I thought Newcastle's attack
02:28that from three
02:30Potentially the from three that you'd seen start the season next week the Southampton I thought Anthony Gordon
02:36Was really lively Shaw. He was trying to trying to beat a man
02:40Sometimes it wasn't working, but I think yeah really good from him and he came off after 45 minutes
02:46But thankfully all planned because he did take a few walks. I thought yeah, he did
02:49Yeah, he did
02:50It looked like he took a walk on his ankle the end off and I seen him coming off and he was shaking his
02:54Head towards one of the medical team
02:56So, no, but yeah Eddie how cleared up the end and so that he the 45 minutes was was pre-planned
03:01I'm pretty gonna actually want to play longer which as Eddie house heads a good sign
03:05But yeah, the positive from the night is that he was he was back and
03:09felt probably would have felt the love a little bit after I'll see it a few months of speculation which everyone's aware of in
03:13terms of Liverpool and but I think it's really positive art and
03:17That he's played a day and put in a very very good shift as well
03:22I'd be surprised if he doesn't start next week to be honest
03:25I think Eddie I mentioned the air and the end there that Anthony Gordon will be ready for next week and for me
03:29That's as good as confirmation that he will start and he should to be honest
03:34I know, you know Harvey Barnes is in that position, but I'm pretty Gordon has been
03:38What wasn't he castles player the season last year and and looks again will be hungry to impress
03:43So yeah, it's a no-brainer for me
03:46On the left wing yeah was again very lively came off the bench for Anthony Gordon in second half and one of those players
03:53He is only 17, but he got the crowd on the feet which for such a young lad coming on is all you can ask
03:59For really? Yeah, he's absolutely superb like
04:02How many he's came on and for his four games?
04:05Yeah, he's played every every preseason game that we've been able to watch and he's made an impression in every single one
04:11Yeah, and if anything got better by the game, I thought today
04:14There was moments I was looking up with Joel in and he beat like two men go to the box
04:18Like he's only 17 years old and that's a bit what should count like he's got a lot of room to develop
04:23But you see 70 year old lads come through and they take time to talk to have something about them
04:28Yeah, he looks like he's got some about him already. Yeah, definitely. I thought his best moment was actually it was an attack
04:34outside of his right foot drifted away from the guy and played the ball to Alex and a sack who was
04:42Sensational
04:43Outside of the penalty area. He did everything but score
04:46He was back to his best in all senses of the word except in front of goal
04:52He should have had three or four tonight didn't get any mr. Penalty
04:57For him. He'll probably be figured out. I've had a terrible game. He was
05:01Excellent. Yeah, but just couldn't score and kept missing chances didn't really test the keeper
05:06But then unselfishly
05:07Tries to play in Ben Parkinson who just hits it straight to the keeper said Ben Parkinson young lad denied his first goal
05:13But that all came from Trevor and Sanusi bringing the ball out showing a good turn of pace and I've been really
05:19Really impressed with him in preseason. It is as you asked Eddie how it's probably too early for him to to go out on loan
05:26I think a season with the 21s bearing in mind. He only
05:29This time last year. Well, so shortly after his arrival. He came from Birmingham City last summer
05:35He was playing under 17s under 16s. He stepped up to the 18s then the 21s
05:40So in the space of 12 months asking him to play first-team football is a big ask
05:44But he stood up to the challenge so far whether we see him. I regularly in the Premier League
05:49I think is probably too soon, but I
05:52Think you cannot fault what we've seen so far from Trevor and Susie turning around like he's still on the pitch
05:58I couldn't take my eyes off him when he was on the picture. He's on a good preseason Jacob five goals. Excellent
06:05by the exception of
06:06the mistake
06:08Yes, yeah, although it might have been out of play the ball
06:13But the exception of us. Yeah, you mentioned there five goals involved in pretty much a lot of Newcastle's good play as well. So just
06:21Well ahead in terms of the pecking order in terms of the right wing position. I think yeah
06:25well, we said it early on preseason was one of the total games set after like that front three because
06:31Newcastle probably aren't going to sign a right forward before the season start. It would be a major shock if it did
06:35That front three tonight as you mentioned starts the season. Jacob Murphy in many ways has put himself
06:41firmly ahead of
06:43Miguel Almiron and it isn't just based off preseason. It's based off the back end of last season as well because he's been scoring and
06:50Assisting goals for a Tony preseason, but add that as well as the back end last season
06:55He's in fine form to be fair to him. I think
06:59He's improved a lot
07:03Significantly actually and why he's actually found a good place in this team. So and keep up the good work
07:11Well, you know what share of the channel yours easy walks past us in the air
07:16Yes, he's been on being on the Geordie Journals very very very briefly. I thought Joe Linton incredible
07:23Oh, yeah
07:23Back to his best
07:24It's been months since we've seen that because obviously he was still getting back up to speed by the time he returned
07:29Back in the last season and then preseason. He's had shown glimpses. I thought tonight
07:35He was back to his is Joe Linton best and monster and no playwritings. Yes. Yes. No, I use machine
07:41I'm a machine. He was a machine. It was for the second and third goal
07:44He's won tackles high up to actually to
07:46Set Newcastle away and then there was moments when he was driving forward from midfield
07:50He was an absolute beast tonight and that's how you think you associate with Joe Linton that
07:54Aggression and winning tackles and being able to carry the ball forward. So yeah, and
07:59Yeah, really good signs from it was the Newcastle
08:02It was a much more recognizable Newcastle tonight than we've seen in other preseason games and another midfield shout-out
08:08I have to give Jamie Miley who asked Eddie how about it's been a bit
08:12He's been used in a few different positions this preseason
08:16Out of place at times look to still be getting up to speed with playing first-team football in the pace of it
08:22Obviously the humidity out in Tokyo as well is another factor for tonight playing for the first team at St.
08:28James's Park
08:29He looked he looked at home. He did. Yeah, I mean
08:3320 years old it's
08:35Potential of going out on loan which Eddie how sort of acknowledged Jamie Miley acknowledged over in Japan when we asked him about that
08:42But I think yeah a Louie Miley performance
08:46I was going to say, who did Eddie how compare to him when he asked him?
08:48He compared him to Louie Miley last preseason when he was
08:52Burst onto the scene if you like and looked at home in the midfield and Jamie Miley did that tonight whether
08:57Whether we'll see him in the Premier League
08:59I think it's looking likely that he probably gets loaned out at 20 years old. We've praised Newcastle
09:05But I think second half was a bit more of an even game
09:08No further goals after Newcastle being 4-0 up at halftime could have been 4-0 up after 20 minutes
09:14It's like a sack. Sorry
09:17Sack is how you say as I was told I know I know it's how you say
09:21It's just slip of the tongue. I say it's like sometimes
09:24Isaac if he had scored his penalty, but Girona
09:29Champions League opposition man
09:31Yeah, how far off it?
09:33Came to you at halftime and said if this was a League two team showing up at St.
09:38James's Park you'd think or if it was a team right at the start of preseason
09:42These play on Thursday and the start of their season starts on Thursday
09:45Honest, so so far off. Can you imagine how lucky Newcastle have been to have them in the Champions League group?
09:50If I'd had Girona in the Champions League group they would have qualified them like PSG, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund
09:55I know well, let's hope Brest are a little bit better a little bit more
10:00Turn the screw a little bit and actually apply a bit of pressure and be able to pass more than yeah two balls in
10:08succession honestly, I was
10:11Extremely disappointed
10:13You do you've got a camera where you got it?
10:14Yes, you judge it and see Newcastle really good
10:16But then you've got a question opposition before we descend into Waffle while we're relatively concise by our standards at least
10:23Well, bid you good evening good day Jordy Juno's back again as a twosome at St.
10:29James's Park where Newcastle United
10:31Get used to this one and feel it sell a cup
10:342024 they've done it again Jordan one nil win over Brest wasn't quite as plain sailing as the game against Girona a bit more of a
10:41challenge
10:42less eventful game, but hey more minutes in the tank to end preseason and a trophy at the end of it
10:49yeah, that was the key today because
10:52Looking at a start 11. There wasn't a lot of preseason minutes in that no start 11 bar probably the exception of
10:58Harvey Barnes, maybe and you go through the team
11:02Martin the brav kaki you and trippy are making their first appearances of the summer
11:07Lloyd Kelly and Fabian shell making only their second appearances and
11:13Joe Willock Joe Willock was the same and it was a
11:17It was a lot to our Lewis who's been
11:20who's been around and then Bruno as well as we made one of PR and so far and
11:25you then had the front three of I think I was made a couple of
11:2945 minutes there and then
11:31well, the Sula with a Sula debut, which I wouldn't come on a little bit and
11:36He mentioned I said yeah on the press conference about what a Sula and it was
11:40Yeah, I actually had concussion before you arrived at Newcastle
11:44I think he missed seven or eight days trailing before he end up chairman Newcastle to start with when he
11:48When he joined I'm only saying this guy wrote a piece on it earlier this week, but check it out. Yeah
12:03Yeah, there's not a lot of minutes in that team I think the benefit from that day it wasn't it wasn't pretty at all
12:08I think it was a lively start
12:10First 15 minutes was good. They took the lead good finish by Harvey Barnes. Hey, it's trademarked Harvey Barnes finish another thing. We manifested
12:19Yeah
12:21It was it was a typical Harvey Barnes finish how many times he's on that his career where he gets in that right foot and
12:26If he creates a bit of space, he's got a great finish. So yeah, maybe give Eddie
12:32Howe a headache ahead of next week in terms of Anthony Gordon. I mentioned me feelings on yesterday
12:37I think Anthony Gordon should start but Harvey Barnes. I think that was an important goal for him
12:40I thought was a very lively debut from Willa Sula. I really liked him in our first off and
12:47some size
12:48Yeah, I know Eddie Howe mentioned in the press conference six foot three version six foot four
12:53And of course, I suggest that someone is tall but standing in front there when you stand in front of us in the press box
12:59he's incredible size. Composing a physical specimen and
13:03usually a
13:05big tall
13:06Physical frame like him you maybe go. Oh, you might not be the fastest but he is rapid as well
13:11you saw that the first few minutes he burst away and
13:15On run seven. Yes, Miguel on one plays him in down the right and the angle is against him
13:20But he gets a shot away. You just stroke clear the defender and I think Willa Sula is
13:25Sort of a perfect first choice of first choice
13:28I keep saying that third choice striker because of that physical test. He will give defenders maybe technically he's he's not
13:36Although he's still a bit raw. He's still got stuff to learn and tactically as well
13:41but if you need a player to come on for 10-15 minutes here and there and
13:46Cause a bit of physical problems put defenders on the back foot. Keep them on the toes
13:52That's the type of player Newcastle need to supplement
13:56Alexander Assad Callum Wilson. If Newcastle are winning 2-0 the comfortable 20 minutes to go
14:01That's Willa Sula time and that's what Newcastle lacked last season. That's what they needed when they were
14:07trying to hold on to a win against PSG the
14:11Alexander Assad is dead on his feet. You needed a player just with the physical attributes that Willa Sula has
14:18Just come on and stretch. He might not score a goal, but he'll keep defenders busy. That's what Newcastle need
14:25You seen it here, he liked to play on the shoulder because he had two opportunities
14:28It was the Almiron one that you mentioned where he had that shot to you from a tight angle
14:32And then the goal that he had that was offside. It was really it was really well taken
14:36Yes, and just missed time he's run
14:38It was marginal and great touches set himself into the box and then it was a lovely right footed finish in the bottom corner
14:43I think there's a lot of raw attributes there
14:45You can see exactly why Newcastle actually want to sign him
14:47I think for the price that they paid the 15 million pound if they can get that transfer right
14:52It's a it's a great deal because what Eddie Howe pointed out in earlier on the week where
14:57A striker was needed
14:58But they've got positions that are more pressing where they need to go and
15:01Dedicate a lot more money to strengthen other areas like a centre-back like a right forward and that right and that striker position
15:07Although it's a position you need to strengthen. They've already got Alexander Isak who when fit no one touches him
15:12Yeah, and then you've got Callum Wilson injury record. Yes, but instead of quality Premier League striker
15:16Probably the best second-choice striker in the Premier League
15:19So they've found a player who has got these raw attributes and can learn from the likes of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson
15:26So really positive signs and they are really like them
15:29And I didn't I didn't know a lot about him until he came but as I say in that first half
15:34I seen a lot that I really liked and if they can nurture it then yeah, he could be a very good player
15:39Yeah, no, I agree
15:40I think he's just an ideal signing because we've always spoke about Newcastle absolutely need a third striker
15:46But there was no point going out spending 50 million on a on a striker who will directly challenge Alexander Isak
15:53Alexander Isak is the man. Yeah, he should start every game when fit and
15:58Okay
16:00Rotated out here and there for Callum Wilson when when needed but yeah, they needed a young hungry
16:07Striker who can improve who has the physical attributes to actually cause defenders problems in the Premier League and Willa Sula
16:14Look, he's he's got to break his duck in the Premier League. He's got to show you he can score
16:19That's what he'll ultimately be judged on but I think as a third-choice striker
16:24Ideal ideal sign based on the 70 or so minutes you got today
16:29yeah, but yeah early signs certainly look positive from him and
16:34Anyone else who you took a shine to today? Martin Dabrowski
16:4045 minutes he he made a he made one very good save
16:43I thought I was I was surprised to see him involved to be honest that I thought Eddie Howard showed sort of played his cards
16:48last week when the
16:49Brassica was left out and for the second game in Tokyo and black at the most got the nod
16:53but yeah
16:54he put him in from the start of day played 45 minutes pulled off two really good saves to keep the
16:59score 1-0 and then black as they must came on for the for the second half, but yeah
17:06I'll go keep the apartment needs to be trimmed down
17:08so it's such an obvious position to be trimmed down and I still probably think that Martin Dabrowski will be
17:14The man to go and I can't imagine black at the most came into the sit and be third choice
17:20I think he's probably although obviously it was in a sort of a trade-off or not and Boris will hop
17:24But I guess would have some kind of assurances that he'll be able to
17:28Try and rival Nick Paul for the number one jersey
17:30And where is Martin Dabrowski during his time in Newcastle on daddy?
17:35how anyways felt like a bit of a bit part I think because
17:39When Nick Pope first joined Martin Dabrowski was straight out the team he then obviously
17:43He was the only one as well
17:44It was yeah
17:45He was like I show loyalty to my players and he did with the likes of my target Dan Byrne despite signing Sven Botman
17:52Yeah, and Bruno had to wait, but Nick Pope straight. Yeah, it was him
17:57Was it a farewell appearance? That's what I sort of questioned. It could be
18:01I mean the only thing I'll the only thing I'd say about Dabrowski is I think I mentioned this
18:04I've I mentioned this already
18:06I feel like I've said it before just about the the clubs that would come forward now because we're at that time in the window
18:11where
18:12Clubs aren't chasing a number one goalkeeper. You want them in for the start of preseason really don't you?
18:18so maybe you will stick around and maybe you will be
18:21Third or second choice and maybe maybe
18:24Can't run with five people. It would be silly especially when they went out and signed the other one and John Ruddy as well
18:29Yes, and then you would have
18:30Mark Gillespie, five goalkeepers is a ridiculous amount to carry
18:35So it's an obvious position to trim down. Martin Dabrowski for me is the obvious candidate
18:39But maybe it doesn't play out the way that I think it is and maybe Eddie Howe will run with five goalkeepers
18:43Which as I say is silly in my opinion
18:46But if they can't ship Dabrowski because you look at that goalkeeping department
18:51It's the only one that they would look to offload now, wouldn't it?
18:53Because you've signed two in Vakademos and Ruddy, you've got Nick Pope who's the number one and then
18:58Mark Gillespie has signed a new contract
19:00So as I say, it's literally Martin Dabrowski is the one that you think would go
19:04But there's been no movement since because it sounded like early on this summer
19:08You might had a move lined up sell it. We're looking for a veteran goalkeeper
19:10They went and signed Kasper Smeichel and there's been interest from Saudi with Dabrowski
19:15But the noise of Dabrowski and clubs interested has sort of dried up
19:19But I'm sure there's just under three weeks left and these things can change quite quickly
19:25Elsewhere in the score we saw Kieran Trippier for the first time, 70 minutes for him
19:29Eddie Howe was pleased, I thought he looked...
19:31I think he should start next week, I'll put that statement out there
19:38I've seen Tino Livermanto throughout pre-season and I love Tino Livermanto
19:43I think he offers a lot in a lot of ways
19:45But he simply does not have the quality in the final third
19:49Putting balls into the box that Kieran Trippier does and Kieran Trippier showed that today
19:53It was three balls in the first half where he created three opportunities
19:56I actually agree with you
19:58Maybe for the purpose of the video I should probably disagree
20:02But I see the argument in starting Kieran Trippier
20:05I think he's been written off in many people's eyes
20:08Because of all the talk around him potentially leaving
20:12Sort of the injury back in the last season, the errors that crept in around December, January time
20:18I think there's a lot of people forget how good Kieran Trippier is
20:22Maybe he's at an age now where errors are creeping onto his game
20:25But for 90% of the time I think you've got a really solid, experienced defender
20:29Who, let's not forget, since he signed for the club
20:32And the way Newcastle play, that right hand side, a lot has came from him
20:36Ten assists that season, which for a right back, I think that was the joint third highest
20:41In the Premier League, I'm only saying this because I wrote a piece on it earlier this week
20:44Check it out
20:46I do think a lot of people forget how good he is
20:49And if Kieran Trippier starts next week, he won't hear any complaints from me or you
20:54On the flip side of that though, I do think Team Liverpool probably earned these players
20:59Because of the minutes he's had in pre-season
21:01Now, this might be a sort of controversial opinion
21:04I don't think Team Liverpool has had the best of pre-season
21:07I think he was one of the players I've struggled in, in Tokyo
21:10But you've got to caveat that with the fact that it was really hot and humid
21:13And there was a lot of players I didn't perform well in Tokyo
21:17Hull, I can't remember him really standing out
21:20Yesterday, I thought he was much better
21:23We still asked questions defensively
21:25But obviously he got an assist for the first goal for Sean Longstaff's goal
21:31I see the argument for both
21:33But if I had to go for a point, I would agree with you
21:35And I'd probably go with Trippier, to be honest
21:37Now we've seen all of pre-season, what's your opening pre-season starting XI?
21:42Right, Nick Pope and goal
21:44Picks himself
21:45Kieran Trippier
21:47Fabian Scheer
21:48Dan Byrne
21:50Lewis Hall
21:52Bruno
21:53Joe Linton
21:54Longstaff
21:55Gordon
21:57Isaac
21:58Murphy
22:00Yeah, I want to disagree with you
22:04Lloyd Kelly
22:05He's been the player I brought in
22:07Eddie Howe said he was really pleased with him today
22:11It's a clean sheet for him
22:13Looked good on the ball, played a role in the goal, played the ball forward
22:19Why Dan Byrne over Lloyd Kelly?
22:21I'll go back to the point you made earlier about loyalty with players
22:25I just don't see any way how Dan Byrne drops out of the team
22:31Because Eddie Howe has spoken about lots of players
22:34And Dan Byrne, he loves Dan Byrne
22:38Dan Byrne at centre-back is a solid player
22:41In that last season, I think Lewis Hall should be in
22:45Because of the form he had at the back end last season
22:48The same goes for Dan Byrne, he was sort of hung out to dry at left-back by the end
22:52But then moved back into centre-defence
22:54And for those final 10 games, maybe less than that
22:58He was, I think, probably 9 out of 10 in most of those games
23:02So for me, I don't think we should forget that
23:04I think he's earned a run at centre-half
23:06I think Lloyd Kelly will push him close
23:08But I don't think he's quite there yet, Kelly
23:10Because he's only made two appearances
23:13I think if Lloyd Kelly had a good run at pre-season
23:15He might have a decision to make
23:16But I think the decision, in my opinion
23:18And I hope Eddie Howe agrees with this
23:20The decision's probably already made up
23:22Because Dan Byrne's played for more minutes
23:24And if you compare the two, I thought Lloyd Kelly's done well
23:27I think he's very good at his distribution
23:30He played the ball along the line for the first goal
23:32Calm on the ball, but probably rusty in moments as well
23:35Whereas I think Dan Byrne is ahead in terms of fitness
23:41Yeah, I probably agree
23:43I was trying to play devil's advocate
23:45But you reminded me that that is in fact the case
23:48But the season's finally back
23:50And we're looking forward to it
23:51So we'll catch you on the next video
