We always say, I love you but I don’t agree with you; or I love you but I can’t support you on this.
I don’t think we should say that. I think it is a little confusing.
What I think we should say instead is: Because I love you, I can’t support that; or I love you so l can’t encourage you to keep going in a direction that I don’t believe is best for you. Love will only do what it believes is truly best for you, so we don’t have to add “but” to “ I love you”—we should add “so” to “I love you.”
If we support things that we believe are not truly best for other people, we shouldn’t confuse them by saying we love them.
