00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're taking a look at the 10 things you need to know before
00:12jumping into Concord.
00:20Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:25Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:29The Story
00:40Despite being an online multiplayer PvP game, Concord does have an overarching story.
00:46We follow a group of spacefaring adventurers, Lennox, Haymar, Vale, Starchild, and Oneoff,
00:52hoping to make a name for themselves in an organization known as the Free Gunners.
00:57But they aren't the main stars of the game.
00:59You will have a total of 16 Free Gunners to play as at launch, each from a different
01:04faction.
01:05More on them later.
01:06You'll get your intro to the aforementioned group when you first boot up the game.
01:11As for the rest, their stories will be unveiled through more cutscenes that will be released
01:16every week.
01:25The Combat
01:30Like any hero shooter, every character comes with a unique weapon and a few abilities to
01:34help turn the tides of battle.
01:36Each Free Gunner comes with two active abilities ranging between additional weapons, healing,
01:41respawning, and more.
01:43However, every character also comes with a passive ability, some of which are only triggered
01:48when executing a dodge.
01:50With your shooting skills and use of powers, you and your teammates will have to work together
01:54if you want to come out on top.
01:56Seriously, you cannot go lone wolf in this game.
02:00Concord is built around teamwork and knowing how each character plays.
02:04Play smart.
02:10Game Modes
02:11At launch, Concord will come with four game modes for you to play.
02:15The main ones are Team Deathmatch and Trophy Hunt, the latter being a mode where you collect
02:20an object after eliminating a player to confirm the kill.
02:24There is also Area Control and Signal Hunt, which will task you and your team in maintaining
02:29control over a specific point on the map.
02:32Cargo Run and Clash Point are roughly the same as the control point modes.
02:36There was a fourth game mode in the menu, but it was unavailable during our time with
02:40the beta.
02:41Perhaps this will unlock at launch.
02:50The Roster
02:56As we mentioned earlier, there will be 16 characters available for you to play as at
03:00launch.
03:01While there are a few support types and a couple of tank characters, most of the roster
03:06consists of free gunners that are focused on offense.
03:10You get some sharpshooters with pistols, a few characters with assault rifles and grenade
03:14launchers, one who can throw knives with great precision, and more.
03:18You will also be able to unlock cosmetic items from earning XP and improving your skills
03:23with them.
03:24More characters will be added after launch as well, so you might come across another
03:28fun character later down the road.
03:30Personally, I was kind of addicted to playing as Haymar.
03:33She's kind of awesome.
03:39Maps
03:44During the beta, there weren't a lot of maps for us to play in.
03:48In our time with the game's open beta, we only got to play in four maps, each having
03:52similar layouts.
03:54Each map featured areas that could be chokepoints, narrow corridors ripe for ambush setups, and
04:00at the center of them, a wider area for total warfare.
04:04Though each were unique in visuals, they all kind of felt the same.
04:08In Concord's Defense, 12 maps will be available at launch, and more maps will be added later
04:13down the road.
04:15So maybe there will be a more robust selection of maps than there were during the beta.
04:24Progression
04:25Cosmetic items can be earned by accruing enough XP from your matches.
04:30Just like any other online shooter, the amount of XP you earn will be determined by your
04:35performance in each game.
04:36However, there are ways to earn even more.
04:39You'll be tasked with various challenges every day, every week, and every season, and
04:44they can range between dealing damage with a character to simply racking up eliminations
04:48between games.
04:50In our time with the beta, fulfilling these challenges was done without any effort really,
04:55but this could change as more people become familiar with Concord's mechanics and eventually
04:59begin to exploit a meta.
05:06Who is Firewalk Studios?
05:09Everything surrounding Firewalk Studios has been confusing, to say the least.
05:19Despite being a brand new studio, Sony acquired the company in 2023, before the publisher
05:25began axing other live service projects from its more veteran studios, such as Naughty
05:29Dog's The Last of Us Online game and Fire Sprite's Twisted Metal revival.
05:34So why is Firewalk getting leniency here?
05:37Well despite being a new name, much of its staff is composed of developers who have worked
05:42on games in the same caliber, the founders themselves having worked on Destiny.
05:47Even so, the quick acquisition is worthy of skepticism, as it sort of implies Sony sees
05:52something truly special in Concord, possibly, although players are saying different.
06:05Public Perception
06:11After two betas, one being open to those who pre-ordered, and one being open to PlayStation
06:17Plus members, players have begun voicing their impressions of the game, and while Sony may
06:21see something in Concord, most of the public does not.
06:26Critics have complained about the generic roster of characters, while remarking that
06:30the game does feel solid.
06:32Unfortunately for an online game charging as much as it is, many are finding it hard
06:37to find a reason to believe in Concord.
06:39Others are wondering what the game is even doing that other hero shooters and online
06:43multiplayer games aren't doing already.
06:46If the weekly cutscenes are all it has going for it, then we really have to wonder about
06:51the player count.
07:06Within the game's final month before launch, there has been much discussion surrounding
07:10Concord's player count on Steam during its two beta weekends.
07:15According to SteamDB, Concord only saw a peak of just under 2,400 players, and that
07:21was on its first day of the open beta.
07:23It only dwindled quickly from there.
07:25In our time with the beta, we were still able to find matches pretty quickly, and we had
07:29cross-play turned on.
07:31So the question now is, are PC players and PS5 players two different audiences in Concord's
07:38situation?
07:39Sony doesn't share player numbers for any of their games, and in the case of Concord,
07:44the publisher has gone radio silent.
07:46Even at ChinaJoy 2023, Concord was shoved behind PlayStation's booth, being nothing
07:52more than a banner with very little PlayStation branding around it.
07:55It's kind of odd.
07:57Overall, there is no telling if Concord is going to pop off, not until this game is actually
08:18out in version 1.0.
08:20Even with its strong points in gameplay and feel, players don't seem super invested
08:24in its characters nor its world.
08:27If you still want to check the game out for yourself, Concord launches on August 23, 2024
08:32for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
08:35The Standard Edition will run you $40 while the Digital Deluxe Edition charges a $20 premium
08:41and nets you early access three days before launch, as well as two cosmetic packs.
08:46Maybe Sony's bets will pay off, but something tells us the odds are not in Concord's favor.
08:51Here's hoping we're wrong, but let us know, are you planning to pick up Concord
09:00at launch?
