00:00Uh, well, uh, you died.
00:03I don't know how or even where.
00:06But your body was remade in the Well of Souls and somehow, it worked.
00:11Welcome to Mojo Plays.
00:12And with so many great games releasing every year, there's bound to be some that don't
00:18get nearly the attention they deserve.
00:20Until now.
00:21You've picked a bad time for a visit.
00:26I would have said you've picked a bad time for a war.
00:30Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified
00:34about our latest videos.
00:38Darksiders series.
00:39To hell with your claims.
00:40The seals were broken.
00:41I was summoned.
00:42Then where are the other horsemen?
00:43Were they not summoned as well?
00:49They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
00:52And while the Darksiders series initially just seemed like a more violent Legend of
00:56Zelda clone, it quickly carved out its own identity with fans.
01:01Building its own deep mythology lore based around the biblical apocalypse and the four
01:05horsemen, the story of war and the other horsemen battling against the forces of heaven and
01:10hell to clear war's name for kickstarting the end of the world became far more engaging
01:15than it initially seemed.
01:17With solid combat, inventive puzzles, an impressive voice cast, as well as each game managing
01:22to feel distinctive with its own mechanics and play styles, it's a shame the Darksiders
01:26series has had such a disappointing sales record to the point where fans continue to
01:31wonder if the series will be able to resurrect itself once again.
01:35Here's hoping the promised upcoming entry will finally give the horsemen the reckoning
01:38they deserve.
01:46Binary Domain.
01:48There was no shortage of third person shooters in the mid-2000s.
02:00So many in fact, that some of the best ones got overlooked by higher profile titles.
02:06Such is the case of Binary Domain, a futuristic third person shooter from the creators of
02:11the Yakuza series.
02:13One of the biggest innovations that set Binary Domain apart from its ilk was its consequence
02:18system.
02:19Not only did this system affect the way your squad would react and treat you depending
02:22on your actions during gameplay, but it could also affect the storyline itself, which is
02:27something rarely seen outside of player choice driven RPGs.
02:32Players were also able to upgrade and customize not only their skills, but their companions
02:36as well, which is crucial to survive encounters with the game's adaptive AI.
02:41Sadly, Binary Domain was simply ahead of its time, as the game would have fit right
02:46in with nearly every modern title incorporating RPG elements.
02:59Alpha Protocol.
03:08These days, Obsidian is known as one of the primary rivals to Bethesda as the premier
03:13developer of western RPGs.
03:15But they had an uphill battle to reach that point in the early and mid-2000s.
03:20One of their few titles that wasn't already an existing property, Alpha Protocol attempted
03:25to apply the player choice driven narrative to the spy genre.
03:29But despite an engaging story, world and characters, the game was held back by numerous technical
03:34issues and bugs at launch.
03:37Attempting to give players the chance to inhabit the espionage world of Jason Bourne was crippled
03:41by clunky combat, a shoddy cover system, and abysmal enemy AI.
03:46Everything else about the game was as solid as you'd expect, particularly the customization
03:51and conversation system, which was designed to force players to react quickly, just as
03:56they would in real life scenarios.
03:58The game has developed a cult following, but is still widely overlooked in Obsidian's portfolio.
04:07Prince of Persia, The Forgotten Sands
04:25Despite a widely acclaimed trilogy during the PS2 era, Ubisoft's return to the beloved
04:30prince of those titles was overlooked due in large part to Ubisoft's other major franchise,
04:35Assassin's Creed, despite being one of the best entries in the prince's catalog of adventures.
04:42Set canonically between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within, in addition to the prince's
04:46time manipulation powers, he was also granted control over elements such as water, earth,
04:52and wind.
04:53Combat was also greatly improved, with the prince now being able to take on larger groups
04:57of enemies at once.
04:59The puzzles, a staple of the franchise, were some of the best in the series, with the final
05:04level a true gauntlet of both the prince and the player's abilities.
05:08However, despite being a true return to form for the series, The Forgotten Sands has been
05:13almost completely forgotten to time, along with the entire franchise.
05:24Vanquish
05:32The poster child of cult classics and yet another Platinum Games gem that is unfairly
05:37overlooked, Vanquish was the biggest shot of adrenaline to action video games since
05:41the original Devil May Cry.
05:43The game's over-the-top action was only fueled by the protagonist's power suit, which allowed
05:48him to zip around the battlefield at lightning speed and even slow time to dodge incoming
05:53attacks, make precision shots, and even combine all elements at once to become an unstoppable
05:58force of nature.
05:59The plot itself and characters were as equally over-the-top as the gameplay, bordering on
06:04B-movie cheese, but anyone who played Vanquish was only there for the slick combat and power
06:09suit abilities anyways, paired with the game's relatively short length made for the ultimate
06:14summer blockbuster encounter that could be beaten in an afternoon.
06:18We're here for a good time, not for a long time.
06:26Sunset Overdrive
06:33Another entry that should have been a smash hit, especially for a brand new console, Sunset
06:38Overdrive was not only one of the most original games of the 8th generation, but also one
06:43of Insomniac's best titles full stop.
06:46Sunset Overdrive was the culmination of everything Insomniac was known for over the years.
06:51Solid combat with inventive weaponry, a hilarious and ludicrous plot, and most importantly,
06:56one of the best and most unique movement systems in all of gaming.
07:01Combining elements of their Ratchet and Clank titles with the many bizarre weapons the player
07:04can acquire, the game forced players to remain constantly on the move with a world and levels
07:09meticulously designed to make the most out of their momentum.
07:13With these mechanics and the talent behind the game, Sunset Overdrive should have been
07:17a mega hit in Insomniac's catalog, but was unfortunately exclusive to the Xbox One, which
07:23fumbled their launch and never recovered.
07:32Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning
07:40Kingdoms of Amalur is what happens when you manage to assemble a dream team, but still
07:45end up coming up short.
07:46With big names such as Todd McFarlane as character designer, and a massive, almost MMO scale
07:52fantasy world for players to explore, Amalur had all the ingredients to rival even the
07:56almighty Elder Scrolls for the fantasy RPG crown.
08:00The game's art style, world design and lore, as well as its open-ended gameplay and combat,
08:05which allowed players to tailor their playstyle, were all widely praised.
08:09The overuse of fantasy tropes, however, were criticized.
08:13Kingdoms of Amalur was planned as the launching pad for a series of games including a true
08:17MMO, as well as numerous sequels, but unfortunately, the game failed to turn a profit and ultimately
08:23led to the studio's closure shortly after release.
08:26Thankfully, there was a remastered release which any fan of fantasy RPGs should absolutely
08:31check out.
08:45Enslaved Odyssey to the West
08:58The end of the world is fertile ground for video games, and while we've certainly had
09:02no shortage of apocalyptic adventures, Enslaved Odyssey to the West, a reimagining of the
09:07classic Chinese tale, remains an underrated gem.
09:11Developed by Ninja Theory, Enslaved gave players a surprisingly bright and overgrown
09:16look at the end of humanity as the world has been reclaimed by nature and overrun by robots.
09:22With motion capture maestro Andy Serkis bringing Monkey to life, Enslaved made the most out
09:27of the advanced motion capture tech in video games and crafted a story with two characters
09:32that immediately endeared themselves to players as their journey continued.
09:35Although exploration was traditionally linear, the world and environments were wonderfully
09:40detailed, and the combat was appropriately impactful, and the use of Trip's abilities
09:45added additional strategy to encounters.
09:48As the genre was growing increasingly darker, Enslaved offered an entertaining alternative
09:52to the dreary apocalyptic scenario.
10:02PS2 era was one of the greatest generations for developers to get experimental with new
10:21mechanics and gameplay.
10:23PsyOps managed to differentiate itself from other third person shooters with its use of
10:27telekinetic abilities and physics.
10:30With these mechanics, players were let loose in environments that rewarded experimentation
10:35and thinking outside of the box.
10:37Players could grab enemies and turn them into ragdolls, or grab objects from the arena to
10:41use as cover or makeshift weaponry.
10:44They were also able to hijack enemies and take control or use their powers and cause
10:48them to spontaneously burst into flames.
10:51These powers were also crucial in solving the game's numerous environmental puzzles.
10:55The narrative tying all this gameplay goodness together might have been as ridiculous as
10:59the powers themselves and unfortunately ended on an unresolved cliffhanger, but the gameplay
11:04more than made up for these shortcomings.
11:18Singularity
11:273D first person shooters were all the rage in the mid-2000s, making it difficult for
11:32anything to stand out from the crowd, but Singularity's unique use of time bending
11:37mechanics managed to do just that.
11:39Dropping players onto an island of failed experiments and giving them control over time
11:44itself, players could speed up or rewind an object's timeline, either causing it to decay
11:49or rebuild, which was critical for solving the game's many environmental puzzles.
11:54This mechanic was also useful in the game's combat too.
11:58Players could not only rebuild cover or grab objects and hurl them across the environment,
12:03but also rewind or fast forward an enemy's timeline and turn them to dust or piles of
12:08fleshy goo.
12:09The wibbly wobbly timey wimey storyline managed to tell a surprisingly compelling and well
12:14designed narrative constructed around the time manipulation device and the effects it
12:19had on the island with a satisfying conclusion determined by the player.
12:30Which game do you feel has been criminally overlooked?
