00:00Believers, observe all the propriety when you argue with the people of the scripture,
00:07but those who are bent upon behaving unjustly among them do not agree to these principles,
00:13so deal with them accordingly.
00:16And say to them, We believe in all that is revealed to us and in that which has been
00:22revealed to you, and our God and your God is one, and to him we stand resigned.
00:32And for a similar purpose of confirming and testifying to the truth of all previous scriptures
00:37have we sent down to you this perfect book, and those whom we have given the true knowledge
00:44of the book, the Torah, believe in it, and of these Meccans who possessed no sacred scriptures
00:50before, there are some who believe in it, the Quran.
00:55And it is only the ungrateful disbelievers who deny our revelations deliberately and
01:01persistently.
01:02Prophet, you read no book, nor did you write one with your own hand before this.
01:10Had it been so, those who declare it as false could then have the cause to entertain some
01:16doubts.
01:17Nay, far from being an invention, this Quran is full of clear signs in the minds of those
01:24who have been given true knowledge.
01:26It is only the unjust indeed who deny our signs deliberately.
01:33And they say, Why have no signs of punishment been revealed to him from his Lord?
01:39Say to them, The signs are many with Allah.
01:44Finally I am about to give you plain warning concerning some of the signs of punishment.
01:50Well is this sign of mercy not enough for them, that we have revealed to you this perfect
01:57book which is recited to them?
02:00As a matter of fact it comprises mercy and blessings, and is a means to rise to eminence
02:06for the people who would believe.
02:09Say, Sufficient is Allah as a witness between me and you.
02:15He knows all that lies in the heavens and on the earth.
02:19And lost are those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allah.
02:24They demand you to precipitate the sign of their punishment.
02:28Had not their term been stated as a respite to mend their evil ways, the punishment would
02:35surely have come upon them.
02:37It shall come and will befall them unexpectedly and take them unawares.
02:45They still demand you to precipitate their punishment, while Jahanna will most surely
02:51spell the end of these disbelievers.
02:54It shall be the day when the punishment will overwhelm them from above their heads and
02:59will come upon them from below their feet.
03:02And he will say, Suffer the consequences of your evil deeds.
03:08My believing servants, my earth is indeed vast.
03:12You should worship me and me alone.
03:17Every living being shall encounter death, then you shall be made to return to us.
03:24And those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, we shall certainly lodge them in lofty chambers
03:31of paradise, the gardens of which are served with running streams.
03:37There they shall abide forever.
03:39The reward of those who take pains for doing good is always excellent.
03:46Those who patiently persevere and put their trust in their Lord.
03:51How many moving creatures there are that do not carry their own sustenance, but do not
03:57go without food.
03:59It is Allah who provides for them and for you, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
04:07In case you ask them, Who has created the heavens and the earth and harnessed the sun
04:14and the moon into the service of humankind?
04:17They will answer, Allah.
04:20Then whither are they being turned away from accepting the truth?
04:25Allah multiplies the means of sustenance for such of His servants as He will, and makes
04:31those means scant for whom He will.
04:34Verily, Allah is fully aware of each and every thing.
04:40And if you question them, Who rains water from the clouds and thereby breathes life
04:46into the earth after its death, making it fertile and green?
04:51They will certainly say, Allah.
04:54Say all sorts of perfect and true praise belongs to Allah, yet most of them do not make use
05:01of their understanding.
05:04The life of this world is nothing but futile and frivolous, and the abode of the hereafter
05:11is the real life, being eternal.
05:14If they but knew, they would have paid heed.
05:19And when they board a ship and find themselves in danger, they pray to Allah with sincere
05:25and single-minded faith in Him.
05:28But as soon as He lands them safe, they begin to associate partners.
05:34With the result that they show ingratitude for what we have given them, and also with
05:40the result that they indulge in worldly enjoyment.
05:44But they will soon come to know the consequences of their conduct.
05:50Have the people not seen that we have made the sanctuary of Mecca a place of peace and
05:56security while people are carried off by force all around them?
06:01Do they continue to believe in falsehood and thus deny the favor of Allah?
06:07And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie in the name of Allah, or cries lies
06:14to the truth when it comes to Him?
06:17Is not Jahannah a befitting resort for such disbelievers?
06:24And those who strive hard in our cause, we will certainly guide them in the ways that
06:29lead to us.
06:31Verily, Allah is always with the doers of good.
06:36Al-Rum, the Byzantines
06:40With the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful
06:44Alif-Lam-Mim, I am Allah, the All-Knowing
06:52The Byzantines have been defeated in the land nearby, Syria and Palestine.
07:01And they after their defeat shall overpower their enemies, the Persians.
07:08Within three to nine years, the power belongs to Allah after their defeat as it belonged
07:15to Him before it.
07:17And on that day the believers too will rejoice over the victory given to them by Allah.
07:25He gives victory to whom He will, and He is the Almighty, the Ever Merciful.
07:32This is Allah's promise.
07:34It is far from Allah to break His promise, yet most of the people do not know this.
07:41They know only the apparent side of the present life, and they are completely unmindful of
07:47the next.
07:50Do they never think over in their own minds that Allah has created the heavens and the
07:56earth and all that lies between the two only to suit the requirements of truth and wisdom
08:03and with a definite end in view, but for a stated term after which the doom must come?
08:11Yet many among the people do not believe in the meeting with their Lord ever.
08:16Have they not traveled through the land and seen how evil was the end of those who were
08:21before them?
08:22They, their predecessors, were superior to them in prowess and strength.
08:29They tilled the land and populated it more and better than these have populated it.
08:36And their messengers of God had come to them with manifest signs, but they denied them
08:41and were destroyed.
08:43It was indeed far from Allah to have done injustice to them, but they themselves wronged
08:50their own souls.
08:53Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they cried lies to the messages of
08:59Allah and they treated them as something of least importance.
09:04Allah originates creation, then He keeps on repeating and reproducing it, then to Him
09:11shall you be brought back.
09:14And on the day when the promised hour of reckoning will arrive, those who have cut their ties
09:19with Allah and were lost in sin will be confronted with despair.
09:26None from among their associate gods will intercede for them, though they had renounced
09:32their faith in Allah because of these gods whom they associated with Him.
09:38And day when the hour of reckoning will arrive, on that day they, the virtuous and the sinful,
09:46will be sorted out into different groups.
09:50Then as for those who had believed and done deeds of righteousness, they will be welcomed
09:57with all honors and entertained in a stately and delightful garden.
10:04But as for those who had disbelieved and cried lies to our messages and the meeting
10:10of the Hereafter, it is they who shall be given over to punishment lasting long.
10:18So glorify Allah when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning, for to Him
10:25belongs all type of perfect and true praise in the heavens and the earth.
10:31And glorify Him in the afternoon and when you enter upon the hour of noon.
10:39Out of the dead He brings forth the living, and out of the living He brings forth the
10:44dead, and He gives life to the earth, making it look green and flourishing after its death.
10:50That is how you shall be raised to life from the state of death.
10:56And it is one of His signs that He created you of dust, and then, lo, you are human beings
11:02who are spreading far and wide over the earth.
11:07And it is one of His signs that He has created spouses for you from your own species that
11:13you might find comfort in them, and He has induced mutual love and tenderness between
11:19you.
11:20Behold, there are signs in this for a people who would reflect.
11:27The creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your tongues and colors
11:33are also some of His signs.
11:36Behold, there are sure signs for the learned people in this unity of humankind and oneness
11:43of the Creator.
11:45And among His signs is your sleeping and your seeking of His bounty by night and day.
11:52Behold, there are sure signs in this for a people who would listen.
11:59And one of His signs is that He shows you the flash of lightning to create fear of thunder
12:05and storm, and hope for fruitful rain, and sends down water from the clouds, and revives
12:13therewith the earth after its death.
12:16Behold, there are many signs in this for a people who make use of their understanding.
12:24And it is one of His signs that the heavens and the earth stand firm by His command.
12:30Then as soon as He calls you forth from the earth by a single call, behold, you will come
12:36forth all at once and suddenly.
12:41All those who are in the heavens and the earth belong to Him, all are obedient to Him.
12:48It is He who originates the creation, then keeps on repeating and reproducing it.
12:54This work of creation and reproduction is most easy for Him.
13:00His is the most exalted state and the noblest attributes in the heavens and the earth.
13:06And He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
13:11He sets forth for you an illustration drawn from your own lives.
13:16Do any of those whom your right hands own equally share with you that which we have
13:22provided you with?
13:24It is, however, a fact that you all, the owner and the owned, are equal partners in it, so
13:32that you take care of them as you take care of your own selves.
13:36That is how we explain many of our messages to a people who make use of their understanding.
13:42Nay, but those who behave unjustly, they pursue their own low desires without any knowledge
13:51whatsoever.
13:52So, who can guide one whom Allah has adjudged as lost?
13:58There will be none to help them.
14:01So pay your wholehearted attention to the cause of faith as one devoted to pure faith,
14:07turning away from all that is false.
14:10And follow the faith of Allah to suit the requirements of which He has made the nature
14:16of humankind.
14:18There can be no change in the nature of creation which Allah has made.
14:23That is the right and most perfect faith, yet most people do not know it.
14:31You should all be attentive to Him, turning to Him in repentance, and take Him as your
14:37shield for protection, and observe prayer, and be not of those who associate partners
14:44with Him.
14:46Of those who have split up their faith, and have divided themselves into sects, so that
14:52every party is happy with what they have.
14:56And some evil befalls the people they call on their Lord, turning sincerely to Him in
15:01repentance.
15:03But no sooner he lets them enjoy mercy from Him, than a section of them associate partners
15:08with Him, and start worshipping gods besides Allah.
15:14With the result that they show ingratitude for what we have given them.
15:19So you ungrateful people, enjoy yourselves for a while, but shortly you will come to
15:26know the consequences.
15:29Have we revealed to them some authoritative proof which speaks highly in favor of what
15:34they associate with Him?
15:37And when we let people enjoy our mercy, they rejoice over it.
15:41But no sooner does an evil befall them, because of their own evil deeds, than they grow despondent.
15:50Do they not see that Allah multiplies the means of livelihood for whomsoever He will,
15:57and makes them scant for whomsoever He will?
16:01Behold, there are signs in this for a people who would believe.
16:07So present to the near of kin His due, and to the needy and the wayfarer.
16:14This is best for those who seek the pleasure of Allah.
16:18It is they alone who will attain their goal.
16:22And that which you lay out as interest and usury, with a view to increase the wealth
16:27of the people, does not help increase it in the sight of Allah.
16:32But that which you present as the zakat, with a view to seek thereby the pleasure of Allah,
16:38it is they then who will increase their wealth many times over.
16:44It is Allah who has created you, then He provides for you, then He will call you to
16:49death, and then He will bring you to life.
16:54Is there any of your so-called associate gods who can do the least of these things?
17:00Holy is He, and highly exalted and far above the things they associate with Him.
17:09Corruption has prevailed on land and sea owing to the evil deeds which people have wrought.
17:17The result will be that He will make them taste in this world the fruit of some of their
17:23misdeeds so that they may return to the right path, giving up their evil ways.
17:30Say, travel all over the earth and behold how evil the end of your predecessors was.
17:38Most of them were those who assigned associates with God.
17:42So pay your wholehearted attention to the cause of the right and perfect faith before
17:48there comes from Allah the day for which there will be no averting.
17:53On that day they, the believers and disbelievers, shall split up into different groups, so that
18:01those who disbelieve will pay for their disbelief, while those who do righteous deeds will find
18:07that they have made provisions for their own good, and so that He will reward those
18:13who believe and do deeds of righteousness through His bounty and grace.
18:19And He does not love the disbelievers, of course.
18:24And it is one of His signs that He sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings.
18:30He does it that He may let you enjoy the blessings of His mercy, and that the ships may sail
18:36at His command, and that you may seek His bounty and grace, and so that you may render
18:43Him thanks.
18:44Indeed, we have already sent messengers to their respective people before you, and they
18:51came to them with clear proofs.
18:54Then we punished those who had denied their apostles and cut their ties with God.
19:00And it is, of course, ever incumbent upon us to help the believers.
19:05It is Allah alone who sends forth the winds, and they raise the vapors to form a cloud
19:12which He spreads out in the sky as He will, and sets it layer upon layer.
19:19And you see the rain falling from its midst.
19:23And no sooner does He cause it to fall on whom He will of His servants, than they are
19:28filled with joy.
19:30Look, therefore, at the evidences of Allah's mercy, how He breathes life into the earth
19:44making it green and flourishing after its state of death.
19:48Surely He it is, the same God, who will raise the dead to life in the hereafter, for He
19:55is the possessor of power over every desired thing.
20:02And if we send another kind of blasting wind, and they see it turn yellow for its having
20:08taken the form of punishment, they will even after that continue to disbelieve, for they
20:14are being engrossed in evil doings.
20:18And you cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they
20:24retreat turning their backs on you, nor can you guide the blind out of their error.
20:31You can make only those hear who would believe in our messages and submit to us.
20:38It is Allah alone who creates you in a state of weakness.
20:43He then replaces your weakness with strength of youth, and again replaces your strength
20:50with weakness and gray hair of old age.
20:53He creates what He will.
20:56He is the all-knowing, the all-powerful.
21:01And on the day when the hour shall arrive and the resurrection takes place, the guilty
21:06will swear that they stayed in the world for not more than a very brief time.
21:12But as they had been turned away from the right way, so they will be turned away from
21:17Allah's protection on that day.
21:20And those who in their present life have been given true knowledge and the faith will
21:24say, You have indeed stayed behind according to the record of Allah till the day of being
21:30raised up to the life of the hereafter.
21:33This then is the day of being raised up to life, but you did not care to know.
21:40So on that day no excuses in their defense will avail those who had acted unjustly, nor
21:47will they be allowed to approach the threshold.
21:52We have indeed described for humankind every excellent thing in this Quran, and even if
21:59you bring them a sign, those who disbelieve would certainly say, You and your followers
22:05are all devotees of falsehood.
22:09That is how Allah seals the hearts of those who do not bother to know.
22:14Therefore, Prophet, have patience and perseverance.
22:19Surely the promise of Allah about your victory and the defeat of the disbelievers is bound
22:26to be true.
22:28So let not those who are not convinced of the truth hold you in light estimation so
22:34as to move you from your stand.
22:39Book Man With the name of Allah, the Most Gracious,
22:43the Ever Merciful Alif Lam Meem
22:48I am Allah, the All-Knowing These are the verses of the perfect book which
22:54is full of wisdom, promising a thorough guidance and mercy for the doers of good to others.
23:03Those who observe prayer and present the zakat and who have firm faith in the requital
23:10of the Hereafter.
23:12It is they who follow guidance from their Lord, and it is they who shall prosper in
23:17the Hereafter as well as in this world.
23:21On the other hand, there are some people who follow ways of causing diversion from guidance,
23:27with the result that they in their ignorance lead people astray from Allah's path and treat
23:35it as something of least importance.
23:37A humiliating punishment awaits such people.
23:42And when our messages are recited to such a person, he turns his back upon them in disdain
23:48as though he never heard them and as if he were deaf in both ears.
23:55So give him the important tiding of a grievous punishment.
24:00As for those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, they will have gardens full of delight and
24:07bliss.
24:09Therein they shall live forever.
24:12This is a true promise of Allah, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
24:21He has created the heavens without any such pillars as you can see.
24:28And He has placed firm mountains in the earth that it may not quake with you and to provide
24:34you food.
24:37And He has scattered in it all kinds of creatures and has rained water from the clouds and caused
24:44to grow in it of different fine species.
24:49So this is Allah's creation.
24:52Now you show me the things that those whom you worship as gods other than Allah have
24:58created.
24:59Nay, but the unjust who do not believe in one god are engrossed in obvious error."
25:06Behold, we bestowed wisdom on Luqman and said, Give thanks to Allah, for he who gives thanks
25:18does it only for his own good.
25:20And he who shows ingratitude should know that Allah needs no gratitude.
25:27He is self-sufficient, praiseworthy in his own right.
25:32And recall the time when Luqman admonished his son and said, My dear son, associate no
25:40partners with Allah.
25:42Surely this act of associating partners with Him is a grievous wrong.
25:49And Allah says, We have enjoined on every human being concerning his parents to be good
25:56to them.
25:57His mother is worn and wasted in burying him, and it takes her two years to wean him.
26:04And give thanks to Me and to your parents.
26:08To Me shall be the ultimate return of you all.
26:13But if they, the parents, impose upon you to set up equals with Me, the things that
26:19you know to be nothing at all, do not obey them so far as this wish of theirs is concerned.
26:27Yet keep company with them, showing uniform courtesy, love, and kindness to them in all
26:34worldly affairs.
26:37But in spiritual matters, follow the way of one who turns to Me in obedience and repentance.
26:44Then to Me will be the ultimate return of you all, and I shall inform you all about
26:49your deeds."
26:50Luqman continued, My dear son, even if it, the deed, good or bad, be as little as the
27:00weight of a grain of a mustard seed, and even though it be hidden in the hard layers
27:07of a rock, or in the lofty heights of the heavens, or in the dark womb of the earth,
27:15Allah is sure to bring it to light and take an account of it.
27:18Verily Allah is the knower of all subtleties and all hidden secrets, and is all aware.
27:27My dear son, observe the prayer, and enjoin what is good and just, and forbid what is
27:35evil and wrong, and endure with fortitude what befalls you.
27:41Verily all these are matters which stand in need of strong resolve.
27:47And do not turn your face away from people in scorn and pride, nor walk about on the
27:53earth haughtily.
27:55Verily Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster.
28:01Rather walk with modest pace and talk in soft, gentle tone.
28:07Surely the most repugnant of voices is the braying of the donkey.
28:13Do you not see how Allah has made subservient to you all that is in the heavens and all
28:19that is on the earth, and lavished upon you his blessings, both visible and invisible?
28:27Still there are some among humankind who argue about Allah though they have no knowledge,
28:35no guidance and no illuminating book.
28:39And when it is said to them, follow that which Allah has revealed, they say, we would rather
28:46follow that which we found our forefathers following.
28:51Would they do so, even though Satan was inviting them by that means to the punishment of the
28:56flaming fire?
28:59And he who resigns himself wholly and solely to the will of Allah, and is a doer of good
29:06to others, has indeed a hold on a support firm and strong.
29:13And the end of all matters rests with Allah.
29:18And as for him who disbelieves, let not his disbelief grieve you.
29:25To us is their return in the long run.
29:28We shall inform them all of what they did.
29:32Verily Allah knows full well the innermost thoughts of the minds.
29:37We shall let them enjoy the worldly provisions for a short while.
29:42Then we shall drive them helplessly to a severe punishment.
29:46And if you ask them, who has created the heavens and the earth?
29:51They will certainly answer, Allah.
29:55Say, all type of perfect and true praise belongs to Allah.
30:01But most of them do not know the meanings implied in it.
30:06All that lies in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah.
30:10Verily Allah is self-sufficient and is praiseworthy in his own right.
30:16And if all the trees on the earth were to be pens, and the vast ocean be full of ink,
30:22and besides that many more such oceans to replenish it, and were to supply ink to write
30:28the words of God, even then the words of Allah would not be finished.
30:33Verily Allah is almighty, all-wise.
30:38The creation of you all and your resurrection are only like the creation and resurrection
30:45of one single soul.
30:48All human beings are subject to the same laws of God.
30:52Verily Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
30:57Do you not see that Allah makes the night gain on the day and makes the day gain on
31:02the night and he has harnessed the sun and the moon into the service of humankind, each
31:09one of them pursuing its course for a stated term?
31:13And do you not see that Allah is well aware of your deeds?
31:18All this is going on because Allah alone is the ultimate truth, and because all that they
31:24call upon beside him are false gods, and because Allah alone is the most exalted, the incomparably
31:32great.
31:35Do you not see that the ships sail through the sea carrying bounty by the favor of Allah?
31:43He has ordained it so that he may show some of his signs to you.
31:48Surely in this are important signs for every patiently persevering and grateful person.
31:55And when a huge wave covers the sailors like so many canopies, they call upon Allah bearing
32:03sincere faith in him, but when he brings them safe to land, then only some of them keep
32:09to the right course, and some of them become indifferent.
32:14Yet none denies our signs except every perfidious, ungrateful person.
32:20O people, take your Lord as a shield, and guard against the day when a father will be
32:28of no avail to his son, nor will any of the offspring be availing his father.
32:34Allah's promise about the coming of that day is true indeed.
32:39Therefore, do not let the present life beguile you, nor let an arch-deceiver entice you away
32:47from Allah.
32:50Verily Allah alone has the knowledge of the hour of resurrection.
32:54He sends down the rain, and he knows what the wounds contain, and nobody knows what
33:02he will accomplish on the morrow, and nobody knows the land where he will die.
33:09Verily Allah alone is the all-knowing, all-aware.
33:13Al-Sajdah The Prostration
33:19With the name of Allah, the most gracious, the ever-merciful, Alif Lam Meem, I am Allah,
33:26the all-knowing.
33:28This book, the Quran, which is wanting and not, containing nothing doubtful, disturbing,
33:35and there is no false charge in it, has been revealed by the Lord of the worlds.
33:42Do the people say he has invented it?
33:46It is not so.
33:48It is the truth from your Lord.
33:50It has been revealed that you may warn the people to whom no warner before you for a
33:55long, long time has come, so that they may receive guidance.
34:01Allah is He who created the heavens and the earth, and all that lies between the two in
34:07six eons.
34:09Again, listen to another great truth.
34:13He is firmly settled on the throne of sovereignty.
34:16You have no real patron nor an intercessor beside him.
34:21Will you take no heed then?
34:25He plans the scheme from the heaven and sends it to the earth.
34:30Then it shall ascend to him in the course of a day, the duration of which is a thousand
34:36years according to your computation in this world.
34:40Such is he who knows the hidden reality and the obvious, the Almighty, the ever-merciful,
34:48who made perfectly well all that he created, and he originated the creation of a human
34:54being from clay.
34:57Then he created his seed from an extract of an insignificant fluid, derived by his consuming
35:05food produced from clay or soil.
35:09Then he endowed him with perfect faculties of head and heart in accordance with what
35:15he is meant to be, and breathed into him of his spirit, thus making him the recipient
35:22of the divine word.
35:25And he has given you hearing, eyes, and hearts, yet little are the thanks you give.
35:33And they say, shall we really be raised to life as a new creation when we are lost in
35:40the earth after being buried in it?
35:42The truth is that they are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord.
35:47That is why they are talking like this.
35:50Say, the angel of death who has been put in charge of you will carry your soul off, then
35:58to your Lord you will be made to return.
36:04Could you but see their state when the guilty will be standing before their Lord with their
36:09heads hanging down and saying, Our Lord, we have seen and we have heard, so send us back
36:17to the worldly life.
36:20We will act righteously, for now we are convinced of the truth about the hereafter.
36:26Had we enforced our will, we would have already given every soul its appropriate guidance.
36:33But as it is, the word from me has come true that I will surely fill Jehennah with some
36:40of the jinn, the haughty, and ordinary people, all the erring ones, together.
36:48So suffer the punishment for your evil deeds, since you had given up the idea of the meeting
36:55of this day of yours, so we too have forsaken you now.
37:00Suffer therefore the long-lasting punishment because of the misdeeds you used to do.
37:09Only those believe in our revelations who, when they are reminded by means of them, fall
37:14down prostrate and proclaim the divine glory with the praises of their Lord, and they are
37:22not proud.
37:26While getting up for late-night tahajjud prayer, they forsake their comfortable beds, calling
37:32upon their Lord with an awe-inspired and hopeful state of mind, and they spend out of that
37:38which we have provided them.
37:42And no soul knows what comforts lie hidden for them, of a joy to the eyes as a reward
37:48for their righteous deeds.
37:51But can one who has been a believer be treated like one who has been a disobedient sinner?
37:58They cannot be alike.
38:00There awaits those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, gardens of eternal abode,
38:06in hospitality in return for their good deeds.
38:11But as for them who show disobedience, their abode will be the fire.
38:16Every time they try to get out of it, they shall be hurled back into it, and it shall
38:21be said of them, Suffer the torment of the fire which you used to try lies to.
38:27And of course we will let them suffer the minor and nearer punishment before the greater
38:32punishment befalls them, so that they may turn to us in repentance.
38:37And who is more unjust than the person who is reminded through the messages of his Lord,
38:43yet he turns away from them?
38:46He will surely punish such of those who have severed their ties with God.
38:53And we gave Moses the scripture, therefore, Prophet, have no doubt about receiving a similar
39:00perfect book yourself.
39:02And we made that Torah a source of guidance for the children of Israel.
39:07So long as they remained steadfast, we raised leaders from among them.
39:12They guided the people by our command, and the people had firm faith in our signs.
39:20And your Lord is one who on the day of resurrection will judge between them concerning every issue
39:26over which they used to disagree.
39:30Does this fact provide them no guidance, that we destroyed many a generation, in whose ruined
39:37dwelling places they now walk about?
39:41There are sure signs in all of this.
39:44Will they not then listen and pay heed?
39:48Have they never seen the sight, how we convey water to the barren land, and produce thereby
39:55the crop of which they and their cattle eat?
39:58Will they not then see and understand?
40:02And they say, if you speak the truth, tell us when this victory of yours will come.
40:09Say, those who have denied the truth, their believing on the day of victory will not help
40:15them, nor shall they be given respite to accept the true faith.
40:21So turn aside from them and wait.
40:24They are also waiting.
40:27Al-Ahzab, the confederates.
40:33With the name of Allah, the most gracious, the ever merciful.
40:38O you prophet, take Allah as a shield, seeking protection in him, and do not follow the wishes
40:45of the disbelievers and the hypocrites.
40:48Verily Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
40:52And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord.
40:56Verily Allah is well aware of what you people do.
41:00And put your trust in Allah.
41:02Allah is sufficient as a disposer of affairs.
41:07Allah has not placed two hearts in the bosom of any man, nor does he regard as your mothers
41:14those of your wives whom you desert by Zikar, calling them as such.
41:20Nor does he regard those whom you adopt as your children as your own real children.
41:26These are mere words that you speak, but Allah declares the truth and he guides to the straight
41:33path.
41:36Call them the adopted ones, after the names of their real fathers.
41:42This is more just and equitable in the sight of Allah.
41:47But if you do not know the names of their fathers, then they are your brothers in faith,
41:51and your friends or wards.
41:54And no blame shall lie on you with regard to any mistake you may have unintentionally
41:59made before in such a case.
42:02But you are accountable for that which you willfully and premeditatingly do, and Allah
42:09is Great Protector, Ever Merciful.
42:13The Prophet has a better claim on the believers than they even have on themselves.
42:19Not only that, his wives are as mothers to them.
42:24But in the matters of inheritance, the blood relations are nearer one to another and more
42:31deserving to get the heritage in accordance with the law of Allah than the other believers
42:37from among the Ansar, as well as the immigrants, Muhajirs, whom the Ansar took as brothers
42:43and united with themselves.
42:46Yet you can do an act of kindness to do honorable favor to your friends.
42:52This is also laid down in the Book of Law.
42:56And recall the time when we made a covenant with the prophets and made it with you and
43:01with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus son of Mary, and we made a solemn covenant with them.
43:10The Lord did it so that he may let the truthful give expression to their truthfulness, whether
43:16they were true to their covenant, and whereas he will reward the true believers, he has
43:22in store a woeful punishment for the disbelievers.
43:28Believers, remember how Allah favored you when the combined forces of the Quraysh and
43:36their allies came against you in the battle of Asab and we sent against them the forces
43:43of nature, a strong wind and hosts of angels that you could not see.
43:50And Allah is ever a close observer of your painstaking efforts and toilsome deeds.
43:57Recall how he favored you when they, your enemies, invaded you at Medina, from above
44:05you, from the highlands on the east, and from below you, from the valley to the west.
44:11And when your eyes were dazed in terror and your hearts rose up to your throats, while
44:17some of you entertained diverse thoughts about Allah.
44:23That was the time when the believers were put to hard trial and were violently shaken.
44:30Recall the time when the hypocrites and those who carried a spiritual disease in their hearts
44:35said, Allah and his messenger only made us a false and delusive promise of victory.
44:43And recall when a party of them also said, O people of Yathrib, Medina, you can put up
44:50no stand in the face of the enemy.
44:53You had better go back to your homes or your old faith to save your lives.
45:00And a section of them asked the prophet for leave, saying, Surely our homes are lying
45:06exposed to danger, whereas they were not actually lying exposed, but they only sought
45:14to flee from the battlefield.
45:18And if entry of the enemy forces were effected in the town of Medina against them from its
45:23diverse quarters, and then they were incited to treachery and join in the disturbance against
45:29the companions, they would have readily gone for it.
45:34But afterwards, as it happened, they could not stay there in their so-called undefended
45:40houses but a little while.
45:44And previous to that, they had made a covenant with Allah that they would not turn their
45:50backs.
45:52And a covenant made with Allah will have to be answered for.
45:57It would be of no avail to you if you flee from death or the battlefield, and in case
46:04you do, you will not be allowed to enjoy yourselves but for a short while.
46:12Who will save you from the punishment of Allah if it be His will to do you some harm?
46:18Or who will withhold His favor from you if it be His will to show you mercy?
46:24And they will not, apart from Allah, find a patron or a helper for themselves.
46:30Verily, Allah knows those of you who turn others away from fighting in the cause of
46:36Allah, and He knows also those of you who say to their brethren, Come to us to follow
46:42the right course, but they themselves seldom join the fight in the cause of Allah.
46:49They are niggardly, having no desire to help you.
46:53But when danger is in sight, you can see them looking towards you, their eyes rolling like
47:00the eyes of one who swoons due to the agony of death.
47:05But when the time of danger passes away, they lash you tauntingly with the sharp edges of
47:11their tongues, being niggardly of any good coming to your way.
47:18These people have never in fact believed sincerely, so Allah has rendered void all
47:25their activities, and doing that is always an easy thing for Allah.
47:32They still think that the invading confederates have not yet withdrawn.
47:38Should the confederates come again, they would wish to be desert dwellers among the Bedouins
47:43in the desert, asking for news about you, whether you were safe or destroyed, and had
47:50they been among you, they would not have fought along with you, save a few.
47:58Certainly you have an excellent model in the messenger of Allah for one who hopes to meet
48:04Allah and the last day, and who remembers Allah again and again.
48:13And as soon as the believers saw the troops of the confederates they said, this is what
48:18Allah and his messenger promised us about the defeat and discomfiture of the host of
48:23disbelievers and eventual victory of Islam.
48:28And Allah and his messenger spoke the truth.
48:31Look!
48:32This entire episode made them all the more faithful and obedient to God.
48:40There are some remarkable men among the believers who have been true to the covenant they made
48:45with Allah.
48:46There are some among them who fulfilled their vow and fell martyrs, and there are others
48:53among them who are still waiting to fulfill.
48:57They have never changed their minds, their conduct, or stand they had taken in the least.
49:05The Muslims were granted victory in this battle so that Allah may reward the truthful
49:10for their having been true to their covenant, and that he may punish the hypocrites or turn
49:16to them in mercy, whichever pleases him.
49:21Allah is great protector against false, ever merciful.
49:27And Allah repulsed the disbelievers back from Medina and they turned back afire with rage
49:34and full of spite for the Muslims.
49:36They gained no good.
49:39And Allah sufficed the believers in their fighting.
49:43Allah is ever powerful, almighty.
49:48And he brought down from their strongholds those of the people of the scripture, the
49:53Jews of Medina, the perfidious Banu Qurayza, who had backed them, the invading enemy.
50:02He inspired awful terror into their hearts, so much so that some of them you were able
50:09to slay and others you could take as captives.
50:14And he allowed you to inherit their land, their homes, and their belongings.
50:20And he shall give you yet more lands, the land of Khaybar and the land of the Persian
50:26and Roman empires, on which you have not so far set your foot.
50:31And Allah is possessor of power over all that he will.
50:36O Prophet, say to your wives, if you desire the present life and its beautiful things
50:45of adornment, come then, I will provide for you worldly provisions and allow you to depart
50:54in a handsome manner, a kindly departing.
50:58But if you choose the goodwill of Allah and of this messenger, and in this way prefer
51:04the abode of the hereafter, then truly Allah has prepared a great reward for the doers
51:11of good among you.
51:13O wives of the Prophet, if any of you be guilty of manifest improper conduct, a conduct falling
51:20short of the highest standard of faith as you are made an excellent model for others,
51:27you will receive punishment twice over.
51:30It is indeed easy for Allah to double your punishment.
