00:00The Manawag Church in Pangasinan is one of the places that is visited by Catholic devotees.
00:14And when you visit a place, of course, you can't forget to visit Juan.
00:20But aside from the water that is known in Pangasinan,
00:24there is another place that is often absent in Manawag.
00:31That is Kundandit.
00:34One of the people who does this is our founder, Imelda.
00:39Imelda is still young, but she already knows how to make kundandit.
00:43I am the 5th generation in making kundandit.
00:47Because it is hard to make kundandit, my cousin and I are the only ones who made it.
00:53For Imelda, the kundandit served as a survival food of the Pangasinense during the Japanese occupation.
01:00They cook it so that there is food to eat for a week.
01:05Because during the Japanese occupation, the rice they used to cook was spoiled.
01:10They invented a rice cooker so that it won't spoil even for a week.
01:14It has a great importance in the history of the place.
01:17As of now, only two kundandit are still being sold, including Imelda.
01:21As time goes by, this type of product is becoming less and less.
01:27And there are also fewer people selling it.
01:29Because it is not like other rice that you can make in a few hours.
01:36Together, we will let the tourists taste the kundandit,
01:40here in Manawag, the Miss Pangasinan 2019,
01:43and the commercial model, Gwendolyn, a proud Pangasinense.
01:47Hi mga kawander, we are here now in Manawag, Pangasinan.
01:51Manawag used to have another famous product that is now forgotten by people.
01:57That is kundandit.
02:00But of course, before I taste this, I want to know how to make it.
02:04Come with me.
02:12To make kundandit, you only need two ingredients.
02:15Sticky rice and panucha.
02:18How much is it?
02:20First, wash the sticky rice.
02:23What do you call this?
02:25Laba.
02:27After that, you will beat it until it becomes golden brown.
02:32Just mix it so that it will not stick.
02:36We will do something next.
02:38This is the challenging part.
02:40This is just level 1.
02:42Okay.
02:46After almost an hour of mixing,
02:50we will remove the sticky rice and we will grind it.
02:58We will combine the ground sticky rice and the melted panucha.
03:03And then we will mix it.
03:08We will also put it in a mold that they call lansunan.
03:12So why is it a moon shape?
03:15Because there are a lot of shapes.
03:17We will ask grandpa and grandma.
03:19Okay, we will ask them first.
03:21We have been through a lot.
03:23That's how hard it is to make, guys.
03:25That's why no one has been making it for a long time because it's really hard to make.
03:30And for the last step,
03:32we will let it rise for 15 minutes.
03:36There.
03:38Wow.
03:40Delicious!
03:42I can taste the tiredness and hardship.
03:47Where are you from?
03:49Baguio.
03:50Baguio?
03:51Are you familiar with that?
03:52Or did you just try it?
03:53Just now.
03:54Just now.
03:55Because of that, we will give you a lot of condiments
03:59so that you can share it with your friends and family in Baguio.
04:04This upcoming September, what we call Tourism Month,
04:08we will invite Melda to teach our fellow countrymen how to make condiments
04:13so that more people will know how to make it.
