00:00As soon as it gets wet, the first thing that comes to our mind is dirt.
00:05But now, the wetness has leveled up.
00:09Literal rags to riches.
00:11Because it's not just a cleaner for the dirt in the house.
00:16Seat cover, blankets, clothes.
00:19Those are just a few of the designs of the American designer,
00:22Elyse McMahon,
00:24and her designs were featured in the popular fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue in 2022.
00:31Elyse's goal is to reduce textile waste in her designs.
00:37That's why she used retasson fabric,
00:40which is similar to the one we read in our Pinoy version.
00:47In a tent in Payatas, Quezon City,
00:50the neighbors banded together to make a wetland.
00:56The wetland is not just a place to pass by.
00:59It's important and their livelihood.
01:07One of the oldest wetland makers here is Mang Renato, 64 years old.
01:12He's been a certified wetland maker since 2005.
01:17We started this when my eldest son got a job.
01:21We saved P7,000.
01:24That's how my wife and I started.
01:30I followed her.
01:32I helped her until she got better.
01:37The price of the wetland is now P10 to P20.
01:40In addition to making money,
01:42his neighbors are also engaged in making wetlands.
01:46They learned from us when we bought the tents.
01:51They are coming closer to us
01:54because they see that this can be a source of income.
02:01His wife passed away in 2018.
02:04He passed on the unique method of making wetlands to his neighbors.
02:10Until recently, they were led by the PBM or Payatas Wetland Makers,
02:15which now has more than 100 members.
02:19This has helped us a lot.
02:21We have a wife who is looking for a job.
02:24We need to help our wives.
02:30When my children are studying,
02:33if they don't have a tent,
02:35I make ten tents.
02:37The next day, the kids have a tent.
02:40The industry of making wetlands is a big help in textile waste management.
02:45The fabrics they use are retasson fabrics.
02:52And of course, I won't be the last one.
02:54I went to Payatas to try the traditional method of making wetlands.
03:00Kawander, we are here with the Wetland Makers
03:04here in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City.
03:06My challenge today is to make a wetland,
03:10just like what they are doing.
03:12Let's see how far my powers will take me.
03:15We have Mami Corazon with us.
03:18She will teach me.
03:19I will just start so I can finish it.
03:23For the first step,
03:24the fabric will be placed in the tent.
03:28Alternate.
03:30Okay.
03:31Where are your fabrics from?
03:33From Taytay.
03:34From Taytay.
03:35Oh, the pieces?
03:36Yes.
03:37They are woven.
03:38The fabrics are woven?
03:39Yes.
03:40This is what the villagers earn here in the village.
03:43So they don't have to work as maritimes?
03:45While working as maritimes,
03:48the maritimes won't be lost.
03:49Really?
03:50Yes.
03:51So while working as maritimes,
03:53the hands are also beautiful.
03:54You know, we don't know about your farm.
03:58What do you do?
03:59Are you the one who doesn't have a farm?
04:02Okay, the maritimes are right.
04:04I will try to place the fabric in the tent.
04:08Can I follow you?
04:09Of course.
04:14It hurts when I walk.
04:15When I walk,
04:17my fingers hurt.
04:18It hurts too, right?
04:23When the fabric is placed in the tent,
04:25it will be tied.
04:31This one?
04:32Yes.
04:33And this one?
04:34Yes.
04:35It looks like you won't be able to finish it in a week.
04:39I'm just kidding.
04:40Are you happy?
04:41You're too much.
04:42I'm lucky that we don't earn anything here.
04:45Where is it?
04:46Is it right?
04:47It looks like you're buying milk.
04:52And for the last process,
04:54the fabric will be locked using a hook.
04:56Hook.
04:57Hook.
04:58Hook.
04:59Hook.
05:00Hook.
05:04Oh, it's not yet?
05:07Next week, we'll be done.
05:09My fellow Wanderers,
05:10I was really challenged to lock the fabric.
05:14Why didn't it pass?
05:16It's like it's upside down.
05:24Will it finish?
05:27Wait.
05:29Wait.
05:31Wait, Charlie.
05:33I'm still finishing it.
05:37So, this is it.
05:38It's done.
05:40Why is it upside down?
05:41This is what we did.
05:42It's obvious that I did it.
05:45There.
05:46This is the result.
05:47It's great, right?
05:49Who would have thought that this is just a retassel?
05:51This is the original fabric that I'm making.
05:57It's upside down.
06:00There's a disclaimer.
06:02This is what Ma'am Susan made.
06:04This is what I made.
06:05Yes, yes.
06:06This is what I made.
06:07It's straight.
06:08For me, I don't know why this happened.
06:12Let's give a round of applause to Ma'am Susan.
06:14Thank you.
06:17The Basahan Makers still have something to do.
06:20It's not just the basahan that they can do with the retassel fabric.
06:24They also make this skirt that they wear when they do zumba.
06:29There.
06:30Aside from making basahan,
06:32another thing that mothers do here is zumba.
06:36They still use the retassel of basahan.
06:40So, let's go ladies.
06:46The making of basahan is not just considered as an income.
06:50This is their life.
06:52Because of the barangay,
06:53a family has been formed that is happy everyday.
07:03You're good.
07:04You're good.
07:06You're used to it.
07:09You're used to it.
07:10Especially Coach.
07:12It's like a lot of people are rushing.
