00:00Hi kids! Today we will learn when to use a and an. So let's start!
00:12Here we have some objects. Let's name them. This is an apple. This is a chair.
00:26This is an egg. This is a mango. This is an orange. This is a pen.
00:41There is a little confusion why there is a before certain names and an before certain names.
00:54Let's find a solution to this confusion. We have 26 letters in English.
01:06Out of them, only 5 letters are vowels and rest of them are consonants.
01:14And the rule is, when a singular naming word begins with the sound of any of the vowels, then we use an before it.
01:26And when a singular naming word begins with the sound of any of the consonants, we use a before it.
01:36Let's learn this with examples. What is this? We will say, this is an apple.
01:48This is a single apple. So we have to use a or an before it.
01:57But apple starts with the sound of a. So it is a vowel sound.
02:06So we will choose an from these. So it is an apple.
02:15Next example. What is this? Again, this is a single object.
02:25So we will use a or an before it. It starts with the sound of m.
02:35So we will choose a. And we will say, this is a mango.
02:43So we learned that we use a or an before a singular naming word.
02:51And the rule for using an is, the naming word should begin with a vowel sound.
02:59And the rule for using a is, the naming word should begin with a consonant sound.
03:08Now, let's learn more examples. What is this? This is a banana.
03:19Why a banana and not an banana? Because banana starts with a consonant sound.
03:29The sound of letter b. So we will use a before it.
03:36What do you see in this picture? These are mangoes.
03:45We will not use a or an because the naming word is not singular.
03:52There are more than one mango. So we will neither use a nor an.
04:01Instead, we will say, these are mangoes.
04:07Remember kids, if there is a singular object, then we have to use a or an before it.
04:17This is the picture of umbrella. Umbrella starts with the vowel sound u.
04:25So we will choose an and we will say, this is an umbrella.
04:33Now, let's see some more examples.
04:40It begins with the vowel sound e. So we will use an before it.
04:53Now, pen begins with the sound of letter p. So it's a consonant.
05:01So we will choose a with a pen.
05:08Here we have the picture of lunchbox. It begins with the sound of consonant l.
05:16So we will choose a. This is a lunchbox.
05:24Here we have the picture of some books. That is, more than one book.
05:31So, books is a plural naming word. We will use neither a nor an.
05:41We will say, these are books.
05:46We have the picture of some apples. Apples is a plural naming word.
05:55So we cannot use a or an with apples.
06:01Here we have the picture of a laptop. It begins with a consonant sound, the sound of letter l.
06:14So we will use a, a laptop.
06:23Bowl begins with a consonant sound, the sound of letter b.
06:32So we will say, a bowl.
06:36Cup begins with a consonant sound, the sound of letter c.
06:45So we will say, a cup.
06:52Eggs is a plural naming word, as there are more than one egg.
06:59So we cannot use a or an with it.
07:05So we will say, these are eggs.
07:13It is a single object and begins with a vowel sound, the sound of letter i.
07:21So we will say, an inch tape.
07:26Lion begins with a consonant sound, the sound of letter l.
07:36So we will use a.
07:43Octopus begins with the sound of letter o, which is a vowel.
07:56Fan, it begins with a consonant sound, the sound of letter f.
08:03So we will say, a fan.
08:08Now, here we have some tricky examples.
08:13How will you name our?
08:17Will you say, a hour or an hour?
08:25It begins with the letter h.
08:28H is a consonant.
08:31But when we say hour, we notice that it starts with a vowel sound of a, and not with the sound of h.
08:43So we will use an before it, not a.
08:48We will say an hour, as the rule is to see the sound of the first word, and not the letter itself.
08:59Here is another such example.
09:04What will you use with honest?
09:08A or an?
09:12Will it be a honest person or an honest person?
09:20Honest starts with the letter h.
09:24But the first sound of the word is that of the vowel o.
09:31Remember, if a singular naming word starts with the sound of a vowel, and not necessarily with a vowel, we will use an before it.
09:45Here is another example.
09:48Uniform.
09:51What will you use with uniform?
09:55A or an?
09:59It begins with a vowel u.
10:03But it begins with a consonant sound y.
10:08So we say a uniform, and not an uniform.
10:15Similarly, for the unicorn, we say a, and not an with it.
10:23We never say an unicorn, because it begins with a consonant sound, the sound of letter y.
10:33We say a unicorn.
10:37So kids, today we learned a lot about how to use a and an.
10:45Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
10:49Bye-bye!
