00:00Hi friends, today we will learn what are clauses, so let's start.
00:11We have already learned that phrases are group of words that does not make complete sense.
00:18Also, phrase is not a predicate of a sentence.
00:24Phrases can be subject, part of a subject, or part of predicate.
00:30There are five types of phrases.
00:34Noun phrase, verb phrase, prepositional phrase, adjective phrase, and adverbial phrase.
00:43Today we will learn what are clauses.
00:49Clause is a group of words that have both subject as well as predicate, but it is part
00:55of a sentence, not an individual sentence, but yes, it can stand as an individual sentence
01:03unlike phrases.
01:07Phrases can never stand as individual sentence, so phrase does not make complete sense, but
01:16clause make complete sense, but still it is part of the sentence.
01:22Here we have a sample sentence, I am feeling very thirsty since long.
01:30Here subject is I, and rest of the sentence is predicate that is telling something about
01:38I.
01:40There are many phrases in this sentence.
01:44Since long is a phrase, very thirsty is a phrase, am is a phrase, and feeling very thirsty
01:55is a phrase.
01:57All these phrases does not make complete sense, and they do not form the predicate.
02:04Now which one is clause here?
02:07A part of sentence that makes complete sense and has both subject and predicate is a clause
02:15like I am feeling very thirsty.
02:19This part of the sentence has both subject as well as predicate.
02:25I is a subject, and am feeling very thirsty is the predicate.
02:32It makes complete sense.
02:35So this part of the sentence is a clause, it's having both subject and predicate, but
02:42still it's a part of this sentence, so it's a clause.
02:48So let's revise the difference between the phrase and clause.
02:55Phrase is a part of sentence that does not form the complete sense on its own.
03:02It cannot stand as an individual sentence.
03:06It can be part of the subject, it can be a subject, or it can be a part of the predicate.
03:15And clause is a part of the sentence that makes complete sense.
03:21That is, it is having both subject as well as predicate, but it is a part of the sentence.
03:30But yes, clause can stand as an individual sentence.
03:37Now let's see more example of clauses.
03:41She is having fun in the party.
03:45This is a sentence, and we have to find out the clause in this sentence.
03:52She is having fun.
03:54In this part of the sentence, it's forming complete sense, it is having subject as well
04:01as predicate.
04:03She is a subject, is having fun is the predicate.
04:09So this part of the sentence, she is having fun, is a clause that is having both subject
04:16as well as predicate, and can stand as an individual sentence, but it's a part of this
04:23sentence, so it's a clause.
04:27Now let's see phrases in this sentence.
04:32Is having fun is a phrase, and in the party is a phrase.
04:40Here we have another sample sentence.
04:44A.N. is the cutest boy in the whole class.
04:49Here A.N. is the subject, and rest of the sentence is predicate.
04:56Now let's find the clause in this sentence.
05:00A.N. is the cutest boy.
05:03This is a clause, as this part of the sentence forms complete sense, and can stand as an
05:10individual sentence.
05:12A.N. has a subject, and is cutest boy is the predicate.
05:20So A.N. is the cutest boy is a clause in this sentence.
05:25And if you see phrases, the cutest boy is a phrase, and in the whole class is a phrase.
05:35Now we know what are phrases and clauses.
05:39Now we have some group of words, and we have to identify whether it's a clause or a phrase.
05:47I am going.
05:50Here subject is I, verb is going, predicate is am going, so it's formed complete sense.
06:02So it can be a clause or a sentence.
06:07We are going to the park.
06:10Here subject, we, going, verb, are going to the park, predicate, so it forms complete
06:20sense.
06:21It is having both subject as well as predicate, so it can be a clause or a sentence.
06:30Subject, none, verb, none, so it's a phrase, and it's a prepositional phrase that is beginning
06:40with a preposition to.
06:44He is having fun.
06:47He is a subject here, having is the verb predicate, is having fun.
06:55It's a clause or a sentence, that is it can be an individual sentence or it can be a part
07:03of a sentence as a clause.
07:06For park, here no subject, no verb, it's a phrase, also it's a prepositional phrase as
07:16it starts with a preposition for.
07:20With toy, this group of words have neither verb nor subject, so it's a phrase, and it's
07:29an adverbial phrase, and it starts with an adverb with.
07:36My cat, here subject is my, but there is no verb, so it's a phrase, and it's a noun phrase
07:47as the main word in this phrase is a noun.
07:52Excellent student, no verb is here, just a subject, excellent student, it's a phrase,
08:01and the main verb is student here, so it's a noun phrase.
08:09Here, no subject, no verb, so it's a phrase, and the main word here is very, so it's an
08:18adverbial phrase.
08:22He is doing his job, here subject is he, verb is doing, predicate is, is doing his job,
08:33so it's a clause, that is, it is making complete sense, it can stand as a standalone sentence
08:42or can be part of a sentence, so it's a clause.
08:48Very well, no subject, no verb, so it's a phrase, and the main word here is very, which
08:57is an adverb, so it's an adverbial phrase.
09:03Very fast, again an adverbial phrase, they are having lunch, here subject is they, verb
09:14is having, predicate is, are having lunch, so it's a clause.
09:22So friends, we learned about clauses and phrase, now let's revise once, a phrase does not have
09:31both subject and the verb, but it can be a subject, it can be a part of subject, it
09:39can be a part of predicate, but it cannot be a predicate and does not make complete
09:45sense, a phrase cannot stand as an individual sentence, and on the other hand, clause has
09:54both subject as well as verb, it forms complete sense on its own, it can stand as an individual
10:03sentence and it also can be a part of sentence, now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn
10:10more, bye bye.
