00:00:00Hi, this is Pat Summerall. I'm looking at a sample copy of the official Super Bowl XII game program that we'll be using when CBS Television brings you the exclusive coverage of Super Bowl XII on January the 15th from New Orleans.
00:00:15This program will have scouting reports, photos and lineups for both teams, a week-by-week review of the entire 77th season, plus a special section featuring the most valuable players from the past 11 Super Bowls.
00:00:28For your souvenir copy, send $2.50 to Super Bowl XII, Winona, Minnesota, 55987. Allow six weeks for delivery. This is a souvenir that the whole family will enjoy.
00:00:41Well, everybody, Ben Scully along with Alex Hawkins welcoming you back to the second half. The Cowboys leading the Vikings 16 to 6.
00:00:51Fred Cox kicking off to the deep end, Butch Johnson and Larry Brinson, and it'll be Brinson from the 13, slips and down he goes, shy of the 25, a fumble!
00:01:02And the indication is that Dallas recovers. And meanwhile, a player hurt, Bruce Huther, is down on the 40-yard line. So Huther, shaken up.
00:01:18By the way, in seeing Huther down, it reminds us Jay Saldi was in on that kickoff return, so evidently the right knee is not that badly injured that he could not continue.
00:01:28Here are some of the numbers that tell part of the story of the first half. The Minnesota Vikings have had good field position in the first half.
00:01:36Five of six times they've managed to come up with two field goals by Fred Cox. The biggest single gain for Minnesota would be a 44-yard pass interference play that set up Cox's second field goal.
00:01:50There's Bruce Huther, shaking his head and hobbling off, and that right leg turned into jelly, so Efren Herrera comes out, along with Bob Brunig to see if he's okay.
00:02:02So Huther, evidently taking a lick of time out.
00:02:05You know, when you talk about the Dallas Cowboys, you speak of a creation, so somehow every year they come up with a couple of them.
00:02:11Well, Bruce Huther is one of them they came up with this year. One of two that made the ball club again this year for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:02:17Fans bundled up. It was 30 degrees when the game started. It might be colder now.
00:02:22Bruce Huther is a rookie out of New Hampshire, so the Cowboys will put it in play.
00:02:27First and 10 on their own 28-yard line, leading 16 to 6.
00:02:32Butch Johnson in a slot right inside Drew Pearson.
00:02:36You play the tight end on the left side.
00:02:39Tony Dorsett slipped and went down on his own.
00:02:44Matt Blair was fighting Butch Johnson at the 35-yard line, and Dorsett slipped and went down.
00:02:56Dorsett, who had a bruised heel as we look at Matt Blair.
00:03:00Blair, Seaman, and McNeil trying to hold on with the back four of Eller, Sutherland, Page, and Marshall.
00:03:07And in checking, Mullaney and Marshall along with Page, Sutherland, and Eller.
00:03:14Drew Pearson wide right.
00:03:18A second and one call by Staubach.
00:03:20And he goes to Dorsett following Newhouse.
00:03:23They stack him up, so it's questionable.
00:03:26Dorsett had a bruised heel in the first half.
00:03:30Jeff Seaman coming in and plugging up that middle very well.
00:03:35That's number 50 coming into your picture.
00:03:37Not a standoff, but a lot of scrimmage.
00:03:39Look at that shot there.
00:03:41Jeff Seaman.
00:03:42That was Newhouse trying to block him, but Seaman was too strong.
00:03:46He might have shuddered at impact, but he plugged it.
00:03:49With a ball at the 37-yard line.
00:03:52Third and one.
00:03:54Out! Out!
00:03:59Dorsett.
00:04:01They stack him up.
00:04:02It would appear that he got over the pack and then was pushed backwards.
00:04:06We'll let that decision to the referee.
00:04:10Those purple people can get stubborn when they want to.
00:04:12Those third and short situations, goal line situations, they don't give up much.
00:04:17You think how they're outweighed.
00:04:19Jim Marshall, I don't believe, weighs about 225 pounds.
00:04:22He's outweighed, given up about 30 pounds.
00:04:24Everybody plays against him, but he holds his own.
00:04:26Been a great performer for the Vikings.
00:04:31So we'll see.
00:04:35And there's the story.
00:04:38They need that much.
00:04:40It is fourth down.
00:04:41Tom Landry leading 16-6.
00:04:44Let's take another look from behind the quarterback.
00:04:48Dorsett not having a particularly good day today.
00:04:50He's been troubled with some injuries, I guess.
00:04:52You've got to give Jeff Seaman his due, as well as the rest of that defensive front for the Vikings.
00:04:57Well, on a fourth and one, Manfred Moore goes back to his own 20.
00:05:01Remember, Danny White burned the Vikings.
00:05:05He ran for 14 yards for a first down that set up the second cowboy touchdown.
00:05:12This time he'll kick it.
00:05:14And Moore on his own 28-yard line.
00:05:18Down he goes at the 30.
00:05:19The first man to hit him was Scott Laidlaw, number 35.
00:05:23That slowed him up for Tom Henderson to knock him down.
00:05:28Though Minnesota will put the ball in play.
00:05:30First and 10 from their own 30.
00:05:32Don't forget, the 78 CBS Sports Spectacular presenting an exciting calendar of outstanding events next Saturday.
00:05:38The WBC World Light Heavyweight Championship.
00:05:41Defending champion Miguel Cuejo and Mate Parla.
00:05:44First and 10 from the Viking 30.
00:05:48Foreman with Miller, and he tries to get inside Yerry.
00:05:51And the fellow who messed that play up is Too Tall Jones, number 72.
00:05:56Ah, hadn't he played a ball game today.
00:05:58He fought off Ron Yerry, and that messed it all up.
00:06:01Well, I talked to Cliff Harris about him the other day, and he said,
00:06:03that is, right now, currently, the best player on the defense for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:06:07Too Tall, doing a great job of forcing it, playing off of the ball,
00:06:11Doing a great job of forcing it, playing off a blocker, and let that pursuit come in.
00:06:17Charlie Waters and Randy White taking advantage of Too Tall, who was handling Ron Yerry.
00:06:22Boy, that's a day and a half work for Ron Yerry to try and block Too Tall Jones.
00:06:27Second and 11 from the 29.
00:06:30Play action, Fates and Lee going high down the middle,
00:06:33and he's got Sammy White, and White's going out of bounds
00:06:37Inside the 45-yard line to the 43-yard line at Dallas,
00:06:41Charlie Waters takes him out, but Sammy White's in business.
00:06:44Oh, yes, sir. Beat the double coverage that time.
00:06:46They had him inside and out, and he still beat it that time.
00:06:51Sammy White, the deep threat of the Vikings.
00:06:53Watch him run the inside and out pattern.
00:06:55You see Aaron Cowe pushing him inside.
00:06:58You should be able to see the safety coming into play right here.
00:07:00Waters, I believe, right there, but he beat the coverage.
00:07:04You get the feeling, and you've had it most of the day,
00:07:06Minnesota is okay, except for Minnesota mistakes.
00:07:10First and 10 from the 43.
00:07:12They picked up 28 yards on the play.
00:07:16Chuck Foreman following Robert Miller to the 35,
00:07:20and down he goes at the 31-yard line.
00:07:24That time, he got by Harvey Martin,
00:07:26and Aaron Kyle finally brought him down.
00:07:28Martin almost had him behind the line of scrimmage.
00:07:31A lot of people have almost had Chuck Foreman,
00:07:33but he just keeps on keeping on.
00:07:34Watch him break the tackle here.
00:07:35Number 79, Harvey Martin.
00:07:37Look at the strength that guy's got.
00:07:41Dallas, finally zoom in on him a little bit there.
00:07:45Foreman White with all that pursuit to speed.
00:07:48First and 10 on the Dallas 32-yard line.
00:07:51Sammy Johnson is going to carry, and he gets inside the 30.
00:07:55The same Sammy Johnson who scored a touchdown
00:07:58against the Rams in the mud after Foreman was banged up.
00:08:03Tom Landry, what a career.
00:08:06Overall, he has piloted Dallas to 161 victories,
00:08:10winner of Super Bowl VI,
00:08:12and in the last 12 years,
00:08:14he's gotten the Cowboys 11 times into the playoffs.
00:08:18His record speaks for itself.
00:08:20What an outstanding person,
00:08:21and probably a misunderstood person, too.
00:08:23Just because he's qualified,
00:08:26and hauled everything.
00:08:28Flags like snowflakes coming down.
00:08:34The illegal procedure against Minnesota.
00:08:38Well, again, it's the old story.
00:08:40We have met the enemy, and they are us.
00:08:42Good point.
00:08:43Minnesota struck out,
00:08:45and they are us.
00:08:46They are us.
00:08:47They are us.
00:08:48They are us.
00:08:49They are us.
00:08:50They are us.
00:08:51They are us.
00:08:52They are us.
00:08:53They are us.
00:08:54Minnesota struggling against themselves.
00:08:56They have played Dallas pretty well,
00:08:59but the Vikings are causing themselves
00:09:01more trouble than the Cowboys.
00:09:03Sammy Johnson.
00:09:06That would be Steve Riley
00:09:08trying to get a jump.
00:09:11He'll spot the ball at the 35,
00:09:12where it is 2nd and 13.
00:09:16Crowd kind of quiet right now,
00:09:18well bundled up.
00:09:19In the modern day picture,
00:09:21the crowd watching themselves on television.
00:09:242nd and 13 from the 35.
00:09:27Foreman inside.
00:09:29Yari slowed up
00:09:31and barely got across the 35.
00:09:37Randy White, as usual,
00:09:38right in the thick of things.
00:09:40So cohesive, that Dallas defense.
00:09:42Everybody being where they're supposed to be.
00:09:43Too tall, not going to let them pick the outside position.
00:09:46Playing off his block and being in on a tackle.
00:09:48White, Martin, the whole group.
00:09:52And Foreman, limping on that left leg.
00:09:57That's the thing about that flex defense, Ben,
00:09:59that Dallas plays so often.
00:10:01Takes so much time to learn it
00:10:03and so much discipline.
00:10:04Tom Landry exemplifies that discipline on this team.
00:10:0732-12 from the 34.
00:10:13Lee going to the left side,
00:10:14over the head of the intended receiver,
00:10:16Bob Grimm.
00:10:18Mark Washington over there to defend.
00:10:21And so Lee is bogged down as he misses Grimm.
00:10:25Of course, remember that illegal proceed, apparently.
00:10:28Added some more yardage
00:10:30and took a little steam out of a possible Minnesota drive.
00:10:33Lee threw the ball a little bit high today.
00:10:35Several times the ball's taken off him.
00:10:38So, 4th down and 12 from the 34.
00:10:43Tony Hill standing on his own 10-yard line.
00:10:48Neil Clabo punting from the Dallas 45,
00:10:51angling for the corner.
00:10:56And he couldn't do it.
00:10:58So, Clabo has kicked 19 inside the 20 this year,
00:11:03but not that time.
00:11:05So, the Dallas Cowboys will put it in play,
00:11:081st and 10 from their own 20.
00:11:1010 minutes and 11 seconds to go in the 3rd.
00:11:14The Dallas Cowboys leading 16 to 6.
00:11:1710 minutes and 11 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter.
00:11:20And tomorrow, the eyes of Texas will be on the Cotton Bowl
00:11:23as well as the rest of the nation.
00:11:25Undefeated Texas, the Irish of Notre Dame
00:11:27at 2 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow.
00:11:29It'll be the best of all of those games.
00:11:31It should be a whopper.
00:11:35Dorsett, the deep man behind Newhouse.
00:11:38He follows a Newhouse block
00:11:40and gets across the 25 to about the 28-yard line.
00:11:45Boy, he just glides, doesn't he?
00:11:47Another year of experience, and he's going to be something to watch.
00:11:50Not that he's not already.
00:11:52Tony Dorsett.
00:11:53A picture of Dorsett last week standing on the sidelines
00:11:56with an ice pack on his right knee.
00:11:58And then earlier in the game, he bruised his heel.
00:12:02Speaking of bruises, Foreman went out with a bruised knee
00:12:05and should be returning.
00:12:06Would you believe this game is in Dallas?
00:12:08Would you believe this game is in Dallas and not Minnesota when you see that?
00:12:12Second and three.
00:12:21And Dorsett confused, and so the Vikings make Starbuck pay.
00:12:26Tony Dorsett, first of all, was late in the shift and very unsure.
00:12:31And then as he rolled in front of Starbuck,
00:12:33he thought he was going to get the ball.
00:12:35You'll watch a young man who is confused.
00:12:37Somehow you get the idea that his mind is drifting a little bit today
00:12:40and that he's not quite with everything.
00:12:43Now he's going to block, then he says,
00:12:45Give me the ball.
00:12:46McNeil says, Thank you.
00:12:47And then Blair and the rest of the Vikes.
00:12:49So Tony Dorsett.
00:12:51And it can happen, of course, a very complicated offense for Tom Landry.
00:13:01Third and three from the 27.
00:13:05Starbuck going to put it up.
00:13:08Down the middle, and a great catch by Preston Pearson.
00:13:13Nate Allen was there all over him,
00:13:16and somehow Preston Pearson made the reception.
00:13:19Remember, he made that key 32-yard catch.
00:13:23That was a big play that led to Herrera's field goal.
00:13:26I think you summed it up.
00:13:27You said somehow he made the catch.
00:13:29Well, that's somehow happening again and again
00:13:31is the way that you get the Super Bowl.
00:13:33Making the play when you have to.
00:13:35Preston Pearson, how important he's been to this Dallas team over the last two years.
00:13:39Well, Nate Allen all over him, but it didn't make any difference.
00:13:42It is 29 degrees here in Irving.
00:13:44First and ten on the 35.
00:13:50Tony Dorsett, and he runs into a Viking team picture at the 35.
00:13:57Seven minutes, 15 seconds left to go in the third quarter.
00:14:01Cowboys 16, Vikings 6.
00:14:04In the first half, our stats unofficially, not much difference in plays.
00:14:09The Cowboys had to boil 30 plays, the Vikings 29.
00:14:14But the Cowboys forced seven Chicago turnovers last week,
00:14:18and a couple of Viking turnovers were very costly in the first half today.
00:14:23Second and seven from the 38.
00:14:26In motion, Drew Pearson.
00:14:31Play action fake to Dorsett.
00:14:33Starbuck down the middle. No good.
00:14:36Drew Pearson had his hands on the ball, couldn't hold it.
00:14:42Chuck Foreman we saw limping off the field a few moments ago.
00:14:47Would appear to be okay as he walks up and down along the Viking bench.
00:14:54The ball on the 38-yard line, where it is third and seven.
00:14:5861,968 here today.
00:15:03To see whether the Cowboys or Minnesota will go to New Orleans to play Denver.
00:15:10Third and seven, out of the shotgun.
00:15:13And Starbuck going high and deep.
00:15:16And it was Nate Wright and Paul Klaus down there, along with Drew Pearson.
00:15:22Boy, do you remember that same play in 1975 when these two teams met in Bloomington,
00:15:27the last play of the game.
00:15:29That was the man you're looking at, Nate Wright, who was victim of a foul.
00:15:32He was a victim of a foul.
00:15:34He was a victim of a foul.
00:15:36He was a victim of a foul.
00:15:38He was a victim of a foul.
00:15:41That was the man you're looking at, Nate Wright, who was victimized by Drew Pearson
00:15:44for the touchdown in that Hallelujah finish.
00:15:47The so-called Hail Mary pass.
00:15:49Hail Mary pass, that's right.
00:15:5150-yard pass with 24 seconds left in the game.
00:15:55What a finish that was.
00:15:59So Danny White will punt from his own 25-yard line.
00:16:03And Manfred Moore standing on his 20.
00:16:07Bikes can't get near him.
00:16:09He appeared to hurry it anyway.
00:16:12Manfred Moore going to have to let it roll.
00:16:14And it's inside the 15.
00:16:18Finally picked up by Jay Salty, who felt like he wanted to touch the ball once.
00:16:23He took a pretty good crack on the knee earlier, you remember.
00:16:27We have 6 minutes and 53 seconds left to go in the third quarter.
00:16:31That was a 50-yard punt.
00:16:3316-6, Dallas over Minnesota.
00:16:38You are looking at two future patients.
00:16:41You see Ralph Neely, number 73, along with Santa John Fitzgerald.
00:16:46They are each going under the knife for knee operations after the year.
00:16:50For Ralph Neely, it will be his fourth knee operation in his career.
00:16:55Boy, you've got to love it.
00:16:57First and 10 from the 13 for Minnesota.
00:17:04And it is Robert Miller.
00:17:06And he barely got to the 10-yard line.
00:17:09And Harvey Martin was the man who met him, and that was the end of the story.
00:17:13Dallas defense playing offense right now.
00:17:15Got to try to keep them in the hole and get the good field position on the exchange of punts.
00:17:20In the backfield, Chuck Foreman along with Robert Miller.
00:17:23Of course, for the Vikings in the first half, they had good field position five of the six times they got the ball.
00:17:29And yet they could manage only two field goals.
00:17:34Lee throwing to Ahmad Richard.
00:17:36And Aaron Kyle tried to hit him to Lubbock.
00:17:45Dallas defense looks fired up.
00:17:47They look inspired.
00:17:49Kyle broke his left arm this year.
00:17:53Bob Lee as he rolls out this time.
00:17:55Can't see anybody open over the middle there, and he goes to his left.
00:17:59Aaron Kyle was not fooled by that at all.
00:18:03It was a lick of Richard.
00:18:04So it is 3rd and 8th on the 15-yard line.
00:18:09Ahmad Richard is left, Grimm wide right, Sammy Wright in a slot, and Foreman in motion.
00:18:14Oh, there's a lot of movement.
00:18:16Well, let's see.
00:18:19There's an awful lot of shaking going on up front.
00:18:24And a legal procedure will go against Minnesota.
00:18:33We have a false start.
00:18:35Number 78.
00:18:36Offense.
00:18:37Cleared down.
00:18:38Steve Riley, as you see right there in the picture.
00:18:40Left tackle there.
00:18:43Number one draft choice.
00:18:47They expect great things from him.
00:18:51And you can tell right away that's not John Madden, can't you?
00:18:54I have been.
00:18:553rd and 13.
00:18:57The ball on the 10-yard line.
00:18:59The ball on the 10-yard line.
00:19:05Chuck Foreman.
00:19:07Got it out to the 15-yard line.
00:19:09Riley trying to lead the way along with a block by Robert Miller and Tom Henderson brought him down.
00:19:16Tom Henderson, one of the real big playmakers.
00:19:18Not as consistent as D.D. Lewis, but he comes up with a big play so many times.
00:19:22He's got so much speed.
00:19:24You saw right there.
00:19:25Chuck Foreman, no place to go.
00:19:29The Neal Clabo will be asked to root it out from his own 5-yard line.
00:19:33Tony Hill standing on the Minnesota 46-yard line waiting for the football.
00:19:41And Clabo bangs it high.
00:19:43Tony Hill taking it at the 49.
00:19:47Matt Blair slowed him up.
00:19:49And at the bottom of the pile you'll see Dumbler and then you'll see Blaha.
00:19:55So Tony Hill gets it back just shy of the 40-yard line.
00:19:59He'll spot it at the 42 of Minnesota.
00:20:0216-6 Dallas.
00:20:08Bud Grant, who has seen Minnesota lose the football a couple of important times in the first half,
00:20:13but Fred Cox has come back to keep them in the ballgame.
00:20:16It's 16-6 Dallas.
00:20:17That man is not unlike George Allen.
00:20:19The things he does to psych his team.
00:20:21Oh, you'd have thought everything was going against him.
00:20:23He's the only man in the world who thinks that the world is against him and is still not paranoid.
00:20:28Thurston 10 from the Minnesota 41-yard line.
00:20:31And Drew Pearson in motion to the right.
00:20:37Staubach crossing out.
00:20:38They set up a screen for Pearson, but yet Doug Sutherland was able to read it
00:20:43and he took him down inside the 40-yard line.
00:20:47The Sutherland up there along with the more famous Eller, Page, and Marshall.
00:20:54Meeting at the sideline for the Bites.
00:20:56The offensive line, that's McTinglehoff.
00:21:00Some of the boys putting their heads together, trying to generate something.
00:21:04When Minnesota next gets the ball, it is 16-6 Dallas.
00:21:08424 to go in the third quarter.
00:21:12Second and seven from the 38 of Minnesota.
00:21:17Jay Salty a tight end with Billy Joe Dupre.
00:21:19There goes Gorsett.
00:21:21And he's inside the 30-yard line, leaving Vikings in his wake.
00:21:25Sutherland and Seaman finally bring him down and a couple of cowboys have shaken up.
00:21:31Rafferty very slowly getting up.
00:21:33Just a big hole that time.
00:21:35Look at all the blocks there.
00:21:37Nearly missed his.
00:21:39That boy can get a lot of mileage.
00:21:41He is going to gain who knows how many yards before he's finished.
00:21:44There's Tom Rafferty.
00:21:45We told you that he was shaken up.
00:21:47He was considered the top pulling guard in the 76 draft.
00:21:51He won in the fourth round for Dallas, out of Penn State.
00:21:54Two years.
00:21:56Bruce Huthert got his bell rung on a kickoff.
00:21:59We haven't seen him since, although they tell us that he'll be okay.
00:22:03They hit pretty hard.
00:22:04First and 10 from the Minnesota 30.
00:22:09Burton Lawless.
00:22:11In there now, double sixes instead of Rafferty.
00:22:18Now back to Newhouse.
00:22:20And he goes just shy of the 20-yard line.
00:22:23Carl Eller on top of him.
00:22:26But I think there's a flag and a penalty holding against Dallas.
00:22:29We'll nullify the run.
00:22:33Newhouse.
00:22:35Had scored a touchdown from five yards.
00:22:37The preliminary report holding against center John Fitzgerald.
00:22:42Boy, as you watch the Minnesota Vikings, the poise that they have.
00:22:45So many big games they've been in.
00:22:46They've won their share of them, too.
00:22:49You won't see them do that.
00:22:50You'll never see them panic.
00:22:52Even when they should sometimes.
00:22:5862, John Fitzgerald.
00:23:00Guilty. We take a look.
00:23:03Number 62 is John Fitzgerald, the guilty party.
00:23:05There's nothing so bad as when you're caught with the goods.
00:23:08Trying to keep Doug Sutherland away from Robert Newhouse.
00:23:12First and 20 from the Minnesota 40-yard line.
00:23:15326 to go in the third quarter.
00:23:18Golden Richards in a slot left inside Drew Pearson.
00:23:24Sutherland chasing Staubach.
00:23:26Now Marshall comes over and Jim Marshall brings him down.
00:23:30The two old-timers came into play that time.
00:23:32A good strong rush by Carl Eller running him out of the pocket.
00:23:35And then Jim Marshall with a great speed.
00:23:37He still has good speed.
00:23:38Been around so long.
00:23:39Just celebrated his 40th birthday the other day.
00:23:4241st, I believe, wasn't it?
00:23:44Well, they have him in one book.
00:23:46Born in 37, which would make him 40.
00:23:49There's another report that he was born in 36.
00:23:51Marshall is insane.
00:23:53Around 40, those years get big, Ben.
00:23:56You know why?
00:23:57You cheat on one year when you get to the other.
00:23:59Second and 20.
00:24:03On the Minnesota 40-yard line.
00:24:05Drew Pearson wide left.
00:24:06Butch Gamson right.
00:24:07It's still Dorsett and Newhouse.
00:24:13Sutherland trying to get at him.
00:24:15They set up a screen to Newhouse.
00:24:17And McNeil slowed him up.
00:24:19And Jeff Wright brought him down.
00:24:21Fine play by Fred McNeil, who was shaken up.
00:24:24Number 54.
00:24:26He had to break the screen to pieces.
00:24:28And then Jeff Wright made the hit.
00:24:30Fine play by Fred McNeil.
00:24:32I'll say it was.
00:24:33He's coming on stronger than battery acid.
00:24:35The entire linebackers last week played so well for the Minnesota Vikings.
00:24:39You might fool them occasionally.
00:24:40Not very often.
00:24:41Look at the play there.
00:24:42Going over a blocker.
00:24:43And holding line.
00:24:44Waiting for help there.
00:24:45It was Hurd-Scott who threw the block at him.
00:24:47But McNeil was able to hurdle the block.
00:24:49Stack up the play.
00:24:50That was a marvelous defense.
00:24:52You liked that one, didn't you?
00:24:53I loved that one.
00:24:54Third and 20 from the Minnesota 40-yard line.
00:25:00Preston Pearson in there now.
00:25:02On a wing to the right.
00:25:04And Preston staying in the block.
00:25:18What do you say about Drew Pearson?
00:25:20Year in and year out, he's been the leading cowboy receiver for three years in a row.
00:25:24When the big play comes, he makes it for the Cowboys.
00:25:27You see it so often.
00:25:28The stallback has so much time to throw.
00:25:30Preston Pearson staying back.
00:25:31Trying to pick up somebody right on the money with it.
00:25:33I guess you could say he's on target.
00:25:35And all those clichés.
00:25:36But anyhow, there's old Drew Pearson going down the back to what?
00:25:3813.
00:25:39Picked up 28 yards on the play.
00:25:42The ball spotted just shy of the 12.
00:25:45First and 10.
00:25:47Second time that Pearson has made the big reception to keep things alive for the Cowboys.
00:25:53Stallback to Dorsett.
00:25:55And Dorsett crumbles.
00:25:58And Minnesota recovers.
00:26:01And it was Jeff Wright who really laid a lick on Tony Dorsett.
00:26:06And a recovery by Fred McNeil.
00:26:10So the Minnesota Vikings find that somebody else will lose the football occasionally.
00:26:15It's still Dallas 16, Vikings 6.
00:26:23This is Tony Dorsett, second fumble of the day.
00:26:25Somehow you think he just lacked some concentration today for whatever reason, I don't know.
00:26:29Cuffs it up right there when Jeff Wright hits him and Fred McNeil very alertly on it.
00:26:33A big play for the Vikings.
00:26:34It looked like Dallas was thinking in terms of putting it out of reach.
00:26:39So the Vikings have it.
00:26:40First and 10 on their own 12.
00:26:42Miller informing behind Lee.
00:26:44And they pitch back to Foreman.
00:26:46Ed Jones cutting down at the 10-yard line.
00:26:49Too tall is too much.
00:26:51I just believe I'd leave him alone and just concentrate on running to the left.
00:26:54Because they're not doing anything at all with him.
00:26:56Rodney Arias had his hands full all day long.
00:27:00Too tall Jones, number 72, is 6 feet 9.
00:27:05He looks like the Colossus of Rhodes out there right now.
00:27:08He's too big to put in a wax museum.
00:27:12What a game he is playing on the left side for Dallas.
00:27:14Just in his fourth year.
00:27:16He's just learning the game, really.
00:27:18They move the ball to the 13.
00:27:20Second and 9.
00:27:23In motion goes Foreman.
00:27:27And Lee will throw it out to Robert Miller.
00:27:30Ed White is out there to block.
00:27:32But there's only one White and there are three Cowboys.
00:27:35And Bob Brunick brings him down.
00:27:37Too much Dallas defense, Ben.
00:27:39One against three.
00:27:40Not going to win very often.
00:27:42They're so coordinated today.
00:27:43Last week they did shopping.
00:27:45You know, they peaked early in the year, a lot of people thought, when they were 8.
00:27:48No, lost a couple games, but they got it back together again.
00:27:50They're the best team in the National Football Conference, regardless of how this game comes out.
00:27:57Well, as far as coming out, we have 34 seconds left to go in the third quarter.
00:28:03Dallas leading 16 to 6.
00:28:08Dallas looking for the pass with five defensive backs on a 3rd and 8 situation.
00:28:18Randy White leaping in the air.
00:28:20So Lee had a scamper and intended for Ahmad Rashad with Barnes right there with him.
00:28:25It was Randy White leaping high in the air.
00:28:29And it made Lee leave the pocket and he just threw it away.
00:28:33Bobby Lee might not do anything to cause you to win, but he isn't going to do much to cause you to lose.
00:28:38He throws this one away.
00:28:39I like to think he does.
00:28:40Anyhow, trying to get to the left, he gets chased out of there.
00:28:43There wasn't anybody open and he just threw it low that time.
00:28:46He's a very calculated player, as he displayed last week.
00:28:50So the Dorsett fumble saved Minnesota on the last Cowboy drive.
00:28:54Now Neil Clabo has to kick.
00:28:56Tony Hill standing on the Minnesota 45-yard line to receive.
00:29:01And the Cowboys are coming.
00:29:02And he got it away.
00:29:03And Stahls knocked Clabo down.
00:29:06And roughing the kicker.
00:29:08And it'll be an automatic first down for Minnesota.
00:29:11That's what happens when you have too many people rushing that putter.
00:29:14They hit together that time and knocked him into the kicker.
00:29:16David Stahls, number 65, will loom rather prominently in your picture right there.
00:29:23Saw some collision between Stahls and somebody else there.
00:29:25You can't have that many people rushing the putter.
00:29:28Stahls, a rookie out of North Colorado.
00:29:33Oh, that'll spot the ball just shy of the 20.
00:29:35Running into the kicker.
00:29:36He wants to go high.
00:29:3765.
00:29:39First down.
00:29:41So running into the kicker.
00:29:43And that was a legitimate one.
00:29:45We have seen a few good acting jobs in the course of the year, shall we say.
00:29:49Marginal cause.
00:29:50That time he was knocked down.
00:29:53We have two seconds to the end of the third quarter.
00:29:57It is 16 to 6, Cowboys.
00:29:59So a fumble recovery.
00:30:00And running into the kicker.
00:30:02And Minnesota still alive.
00:30:09Foreman out of the backfield to handle a pass.
00:30:13He got by D.D. Lewis and carried it out to the 25-yard line.
00:30:17So D.D. Lewis could have ruined everything.
00:30:20But he avoided Lewis before Bruni could finally bring him down.
00:30:23Just a lot of athlete right there.
00:30:25Well, that's the end of the third quarter.
00:30:29As we take one more look at Bob Lee throwing to Foreman.
00:30:32There's Lewis.
00:30:33So much like Preston Pearson.
00:30:35Pick and roll.
00:30:36The end of the third quarter.
00:30:37Dallas 16, Vikings 6.
00:30:39We now pause for a word from your local station.
00:30:4311 years of hit songs from her show.
00:30:45One of the highlights when Steve Lawrence joins Carol Burnett and company tonight.
00:30:49On CBS.
00:30:53If you pick an airline by the food it serves, you'll have a hard time deciding.
00:30:56All airline food is pretty much the same.
00:30:59Eastern Airlines has to do more than serve good food.
00:31:02Reservations has to answer the phone politely.
00:31:04Ground crews hustle faster.
00:31:06Flight attendants do even more to take care of you.
00:31:08And we're doing it.
00:31:09For the second year in a row, we've flown almost 2 million more passengers than the year before.
00:31:14There are other airlines you could fly besides Eastern.
00:31:17That's why we have to earn our wings every day.
00:31:24For somebody, Dallas and Minnesota, the winner of playing the Denver Broncos.
00:31:29And for the Vikings now, it is 2nd and 4 from the 25.
00:31:36Robert Miller trying to follow a foreman block.
00:31:40Down he goes with Thomas Henderson on his back.
00:31:43By the way, this Dallas ball club, a very aggressive club.
00:31:47During the regular year, the Cowboys were penalized 106 times.
00:31:52Most in Dallas history.
00:31:54Today, they have been penalized 4 times for 79 yards.
00:31:58Minnesota, 4 times for 35.
00:32:00It wasn't always that way until they got all those young players.
00:32:03They used to be a finesse team, offensively and defensively.
00:32:05In the last two years, they've become a very physical team.
00:32:08You come down here, they'll turn your hat inside out.
00:32:113rd and 3 from the 26.
00:32:18Throws and drop by Stu Boyd.
00:32:20Stu, the tight end, had a shot but couldn't hold on to it.
00:32:24Oh no.
00:32:25They've got to get a big game out of him somehow.
00:32:28They're doubling those outside receivers.
00:32:30Both sides.
00:32:31Stu caught 20 passes during the regular year.
00:32:33Meanwhile, Roger Staubach.
00:32:36Getting ready.
00:32:37That was a big play.
00:32:39Boyd held on to it.
00:32:40They pick up the first down and they're on the move.
00:32:42Instead, they have to give it up.
00:32:44Neal Clabo will be kicking.
00:32:48Tony Hill standing on his own 43.
00:32:56They're not coming.
00:32:57Clabo with plenty of time.
00:32:58End over end to Hill.
00:33:00To midfield.
00:33:01A hurdle over McNeil.
00:33:03Boy, what a jump.
00:33:04And he gets to the 41 yard line.
00:33:06Tony Hill is just a rookie.
00:33:07But he's considered the best athlete on the Dallas Cowboy team.
00:33:10And that's saying something.
00:33:11Keep his name in mind.
00:33:14He's going to be a great football player.
00:33:15Boy, what a hurdler.
00:33:16You'll see him go right over McNeil.
00:33:18Right there.
00:33:19Tony Hill, he's not.
00:33:23On Monday at 2 p.m. Eastern, CBS Sports presents the Cotton Bowl.
00:33:27With Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell leading the number one ranked Texas Longhorns
00:33:30against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
00:33:32That's Monday at 2 p.m.
00:33:37The Dallas Cowboys leading the Minnesota Vikings 16 to 6.
00:33:41And the Pokes put it in play.
00:33:43First and 10 on the Minnesota 41.
00:33:46Drew Pearson goes wide right.
00:33:48Jay Salty along with Billy Joe Dupree.
00:33:51The two tied ends.
00:33:52Dorsett the deep man back of Newhouse.
00:33:57And it'll be Dorsett.
00:33:59And Sutherland took the block from John Fitzgerald.
00:34:02And made the tackle.
00:34:04Good play by Dutch Sutherland.
00:34:06Able to roll off Fitzgerald's block.
00:34:10Look how poised those Vikings are.
00:34:12They amaze me.
00:34:14We were keeping track of the number of plays.
00:34:17Been very close.
00:34:18Minnesota 48 plays.
00:34:20Dallas 46 right at this minute.
00:34:23Well, it's a little closer than that 16 to 6 that showed.
00:34:26Tony Dorsett, not quite for a carry.
00:34:29Second and 9 from the 40-yard line.
00:34:31Full house backfield.
00:34:32But there goes Golden Richards in motion.
00:34:36Staubach getting fine protection.
00:34:38And he hits his man.
00:34:40And it is Drew Pearson who took it away from Nate Wright.
00:34:44Seaman and Spouse finally hit him.
00:34:47But he's a magician, Drew Pearson.
00:34:49And how about the way Roger Staubach drilled that in there?
00:34:51The coverage was there that Nate Wright had all the coverage in the world.
00:34:54He ran a very disciplined pattern.
00:34:56And Roger Staubach really unloaded it.
00:34:58Rose it on the line.
00:34:59Look how perfect that was.
00:35:00Hit him right in the numbers.
00:35:01And it had to be there.
00:35:03Staubach now has thrown the ball 19 times and completed 12.
00:35:08Hook them horns.
00:35:09I'm going to stay over for that one, Ben.
00:35:11I'll bet you are.
00:35:13Staubach has rolled up 175 yards with his passing today.
00:35:18Roger keeping as he rolls around Matt Blair throws off the hands of Dupre.
00:35:23And it is picked off by the Vikings, Nate Wright.
00:35:28Right off the hand of Billy Joe Dupre.
00:35:31And Nate Wright makes a big interception.
00:35:33And the Vikings are still above water.
00:35:37We'll be back.
00:35:39Right off the hand of Billy Joe Dupre.
00:35:41And Nate Wright makes a big interception.
00:35:44And the Vikings are still above water.
00:35:47Well, see, you didn't expect Roger to unload one like that.
00:35:50He's played in four previously, four NFC title games.
00:35:53And he's thrown four interceptions in those.
00:35:55That's his first today.
00:35:59Dallas 16, Minnesota 6.
00:36:02The Minnesota Vikings get their second turnover in the second half.
00:36:06They had recovered a Tony Dorsett fumble earlier.
00:36:09Now they get the interception off Dupre's hand.
00:36:12Picked off by Nate Wright.
00:36:13Their first intent on their own four.
00:36:1512-36.
00:36:16Left to go in the game.
00:36:21Play action fake to Chuck Foreman.
00:36:23And Lee's pass is knocked down.
00:36:26And it looked like Lampard had the ball.
00:36:29And it looked like Larry Cole, who got his hand up,
00:36:33key of the anonymous game.
00:36:36Zero club.
00:36:37I'll tell you, when he comes in the ballgame,
00:36:39Larry Cole makes some big plays.
00:36:40He can play both defensive tackle and defensive end and has.
00:36:45Kind of a call you don't expect Bob Lee to make.
00:36:47He's not what you call a daring quarterback.
00:36:48More calculating than anything else.
00:36:50You see the big left hand coming up by Larry Cole.
00:36:52Those passing lanes, you've got to move in there and find them open.
00:36:56No other chance against defense now.
00:36:59Second and ten from the four.
00:37:01After that stop by Cole.
00:37:03Chuck Foreman.
00:37:04Out across the five.
00:37:05Just shy to the ten yard line.
00:37:07Trying, if nothing else, to give Neal Claybole a little room to punt.
00:37:12Down at the bottom.
00:37:13Too tall.
00:37:14Boy, what a game.
00:37:15Ed Jones.
00:37:18He had to point out one person to the outstanding player in the game.
00:37:21He'd have to be under strong consideration.
00:37:23Ed Too Tall Jones.
00:37:27Too Tall, by the way, is not going to be in the Pro Bowl.
00:37:31Third and five.
00:37:32Lee trying to hang on to the ball.
00:37:35Both backs release and it's intended for Robert Miller.
00:37:38Bob Bruning was right there with him.
00:37:41And that will be that for the Vikings offense.
00:37:44At least for that series.
00:37:45Big play by Bruning.
00:37:48Pressure by Randy White.
00:37:50That's Dallas defense.
00:37:51You've got to credit them.
00:37:52They're keeping the heat on the Vikings.
00:37:54They're keeping them in their own territory.
00:37:55Giving them no field position whatsoever.
00:37:57And Bob Lee just having trouble finding receivers open.
00:37:59Anywhere.
00:38:01Randy White.
00:38:02Look at that.
00:38:03Look at the rush there.
00:38:04Bruning with the coverage.
00:38:05Nobody open.
00:38:07So Tony Hill standing on the Minnesota 42 yard line.
00:38:11And Neal Claybole will be trying to get it out from his end zone.
00:38:17Mark Washington will be trying to rush him.
00:38:20And then he peels off.
00:38:21Huther comes on.
00:38:22And what a putt he got off.
00:38:24It looked like a Raymond Guy punt.
00:38:27Tony Hill at the 38.
00:38:29Got by McNeal.
00:38:31Still on his feet.
00:38:32He got by Miller.
00:38:34And he is finally brought down by Scud still.
00:38:37Along with McNeal.
00:38:39And Scudwell.
00:38:40That's my boy Tony.
00:38:41Oh what an athlete.
00:38:42He's an athlete.
00:38:43He is going to be a great receiver.
00:38:45He is a rookie out of Stanford who broke Gene Washington's records out there on the coast.
00:38:50So you know he can play.
00:38:51That tells you a little something.
00:38:52Because he's no better than Gene Washington.
00:38:54I don't believe anywhere.
00:38:55Look at the balance there.
00:38:57Somebody senses that too.
00:38:58He's got to get.
00:38:59He's got to look like he's got a can-breaker too.
00:39:02So Tony Hill brings it back to the Viking 43.
00:39:06And the Cowboys.
00:39:08So Tony Hill brings it back to the Viking 43.
00:39:11And the Cowboys have it first and ten.
00:39:14Golden Richards wide left.
00:39:16Drew Pearson right.
00:39:19And Dorsett with his back staying in.
00:39:21And unloads to Dupree.
00:39:23No catch.
00:39:25He short hopped the ball.
00:39:29Roger won't back off much will he.
00:39:33Down in front.
00:39:34Don't forget the big round ball on CBS.
00:39:37The NBA.
00:39:38These regional games Sunday January 8.
00:39:40145 p.m.
00:39:42Boston Philadelphia.
00:39:43Chicago Denver.
00:39:44Los Angeles Indiana.
00:39:45New Orleans versus Portland.
00:39:47The NBA on CBS.
00:39:50Roger's not backing off at all.
00:39:52First down he's throwing.
00:39:54Trying to increase that lead from 16 to 10.
00:39:57Put a little more on there.
00:39:58Each team with three timeouts left.
00:40:00We have eleven thirty five left in the game.
00:40:02Second and 10 from the Viking 43.
00:40:05And it'll be Newhouse.
00:40:07And he just ran over Fred McNeil.
00:40:10But the Vikings then plugged it up.
00:40:12You want to see a linebacker just overrun.
00:40:15You'll see number 54 go down as Robert Newhouse just went right over him.
00:40:19Let's see if we can find Fred McNeil here.
00:40:21Seeming to block on him.
00:40:22This tackle in.
00:40:24Tom McNeil.
00:40:26Wrestle down who is that.
00:40:27Alan Page down at the bottom.
00:40:29McNeil turns as if they get his number.
00:40:31Tom Landry.
00:40:33Exhorting his team to make it to the Super Bowl.
00:40:36And they're leading 16 to 6 with 11 minutes to go.
00:40:39Third and five from the 38 of Minnesota.
00:40:42And Stavart loading up the shotgun.
00:40:48Eller trying to get him.
00:40:49Marshall has him.
00:40:51Eller tried to come in from the outside.
00:40:54And Marshall wrapped him up at the 45.
00:40:56A big defensive play by 40 year old Jim Marshall.
00:41:00Well that's what you expect from your older players.
00:41:02You expect leadership in the crucial situations.
00:41:05That's what they get it from.
00:41:06Eller and Marshall for years and years and years.
00:41:09Look at the big rush there by Alan Page.
00:41:12Marshall in on the tackle.
00:41:13That's funny what Bud Grant said.
00:41:15The older players are the hungrier players.
00:41:17He likes those old ones.
00:41:1828 years old is what this team averaged.
00:41:21Almost 29.
00:41:22Fourth and 12.
00:41:23Danny White will be kicking from his own 45.
00:41:27Angling for the sidelines.
00:41:29And gets it out and we'll see where they'll spot it.
00:41:34Almost the 17 yard line.
00:41:36So Minnesota will put it in play.
00:41:39And suddenly as usual the clock becomes so very important.
00:41:4310 minutes and 28 seconds left.
00:41:46And that's the story.
00:41:53That's a shadow one.
00:41:56Bud Grant and the Vikings in 29 degree weather here in Dallas.
00:42:00A reminder that CBS will televise the final round of the Grand Prix Masters.
00:42:04In Madison Square Garden in New York Saturday 3 p.m. Eastern Sunday at 4 p.m.
00:42:09The Field of Eight headed by Guillermo Velasquez, Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg.
00:42:13But right now first and 10 from the 17 for Minnesota.
00:42:18Lead to Robert Miller.
00:42:20And down he goes.
00:42:22Guess who.
00:42:23Two tall Jones.
00:42:25Ron Yerry was stretched out on the ground.
00:42:28And the big man looms bigger and bigger as the game progresses.
00:42:32And when is Bobby Lee going to learn?
00:42:34Stay away from too tall.
00:42:35He is hot today.
00:42:36He's got the hot hand.
00:42:38Watch him.
00:42:39Let's see how he beats his clock.
00:42:40Oh he completely manhandles Yerry.
00:42:42Yerry got the inside on him but he didn't get outside.
00:42:44Quick enough.
00:42:45Just not quick enough to belt him.
00:42:47So they lose four on the play from the 17 to the 13.
00:42:51It is second down and 14 yards.
00:42:55Here comes Cole but he unloads to Robert Miller.
00:42:59To the 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and out of bounds.
00:43:04Robert Miller brings the ball across midfield to the Dallas 49
00:43:09before Benny Barnes can knock him out of bounds.
00:43:11Minnesota on a big play to Miller.
00:43:13Let's see what they had on that time.
00:43:15DD Lewis was giving a strong pursuit that time.
00:43:17Good pass rush by Dallas.
00:43:19Unloads and there's just so much room to run there.
00:43:22Boy that's what Minnesota needed to get out of that hole.
00:43:24Now you got some working room.
00:43:25Get back in here.
00:43:2638 yards on that completion to Robert Miller.
00:43:29First and 10 Minnesota on the Dallas 49 yard line.
00:43:34We have 9 minutes and 42 seconds left.
00:43:38Out to Sammy White.
00:43:39They try to set up a screen.
00:43:42And he is stacked up by two tall Jones who got him from behind.
00:43:47Number 72.
00:43:48He has been everywhere.
00:43:50Watch the forces stand by.
00:43:52Charlie Waters.
00:43:53Number 41.
00:43:54Number 42.
00:43:55Number 42.
00:43:56Number 42.
00:43:57Number 42.
00:43:58Number 42.
00:43:59Number 42.
00:44:00Number 42.
00:44:01Number 42.
00:44:02Number 42.
00:44:03Number 42.
00:44:04Number 42.
00:44:05Number 42.
00:44:06Number 41.
00:44:07Watch him come into the picture.
00:44:08Sammy White in motion there.
00:44:09Steps back.
00:44:11Gary out here in blocking position.
00:44:13Waters does his job though.
00:44:14He turns it into flow and too tall there again.
00:44:19So two tall Jones.
00:44:2126 years old.
00:44:22Four years out of Tennessee State.
00:44:256'9", 265.
00:44:27He has been awesome.
00:44:30From the 46 yard line.
00:44:32The Bikes put it in play.
00:44:34Second down for Bob Lee.
00:44:36Both backs go out.
00:44:38Good block by Gary that time.
00:44:40And the pass.
00:44:41Oh good.
00:44:42Intended for Bob Grimm and Charlie Waters.
00:44:45Almost knocked him out of his uniform.
00:44:47Cliff Harris approves of that too.
00:44:49Between the two of them, I don't know of any team that has any better safety.
00:44:52Charlie Grimm is the perfect name for the guy who took that lick.
00:44:55You tell it.
00:44:56You tell it.
00:44:58There's old Cole in there.
00:44:59Too tall fell down on the play.
00:45:01Able Bob Lee to get outside.
00:45:03Look at this hit coming in.
00:45:05Do that smarts.
00:45:07Boy why they don't get a whiplash.
00:45:09You never know when they're hit from behind like that.
00:45:15Too tall Jones by the way.
00:45:17When he went down alongside Ron Gary.
00:45:19Might have hurt his hand a little bit.
00:45:21It is 3rd and 7 from the 46.
00:45:30Foreman and Miller go out.
00:45:31Lee running for his life.
00:45:33Unloads the foreman.
00:45:34And Henderson tripped him up as he fell across the 45 yard line.
00:45:40Not enough for the first down.
00:45:42Thomas Henderson just did.
00:45:44Get him from behind.
00:45:46And that saved it.
00:45:48Otherwise they have the first down.
00:45:50Well I agree with you.
00:45:51He had some running room at the time.
00:45:52You put Chuck Foreman out in an open field.
00:45:54You don't know when you're going to get him stopped.
00:45:55Bob Lee.
00:45:56Having to do an improvise a little bit there.
00:45:58Which is not his long suit.
00:46:00Randy White.
00:46:01Contain him in the pocket there.
00:46:02And give us a chase.
00:46:03The footing must be off the bed today for some reason or another.
00:46:06Look at this.
00:46:07Great save there by Henderson.
00:46:09Kyle.
00:46:10Finishing him off.
00:46:11They missed the first down by about 3 and a half yards.
00:46:15So they'll have to give up the ball.
00:46:16Neil Clabo.
00:46:19Again angling for the sideline.
00:46:21But the ball seems to hook back to Tony Hill.
00:46:23And the fair catch is called at the 12.
00:46:27You called that and it was really too thick wasn't it?
00:46:29Yes it was.
00:46:30Looked like he was aiming for the sidelines and the ball just seemed to hook on him.
00:46:36That's Randy White.
00:46:38And by the way.
00:46:39They are all playing for this one.
00:46:41Super Bowl 12.
00:46:42Sunday.
00:46:43January the 15th.
00:46:446 p.m. Eastern Time.
00:46:46From the Superdome in New Orleans.
00:46:48And the NFL today will be on from 430 to 6 preceding.
00:46:52It'll be the Denver Broncos.
00:46:53Against either Dallas or Minnesota.
00:46:56754 left in this.
00:46:58Cowboys first and 10 on their own 13.
00:47:02Tony Dorsett.
00:47:03And Matt Blair.
00:47:05Wrapped him up as he crossed the 10 yard line.
00:47:12Dorsett.
00:47:13Unofficially.
00:47:14Has carried the ball.
00:47:1717 times.
00:47:19For 58 yards.
00:47:21There's Fred McNeil.
00:47:23He's played a hard game.
00:47:24Something you don't see too much of is injured Viking players.
00:47:26You know.
00:47:27You do their.
00:47:28Team of the first of the year.
00:47:29And that will come up at the end of the year with the same starting lineup.
00:47:31And you wonder how they go so injury free.
00:47:33So.
00:47:34So many years.
00:47:37Second and 11.
00:47:38The ball on the 12 yard line.
00:47:4016.
00:47:41Six.
00:47:42Dallas.
00:47:43713 left in the game.
00:47:45Roger.
00:47:46Off the hands of Jay Salty.
00:47:49Salty who had hurt his right knee.
00:47:51Very early in the game.
00:47:52Could not quite hold on to it.
00:47:55So Jay comes out.
00:47:57He's a good looking guy out of South Carolina.
00:47:59And the odd thing about Jay Salty.
00:48:02He was the only rookie free agent to stick with Dallas.
00:48:06The free agent in 76.
00:48:08He's had to do it the hard way.
00:48:11Third and 11.
00:48:12The ball on the 11.
00:48:14Seven minutes and eight seconds left.
00:48:17Timeouts left.
00:48:18Three for each side.
00:48:19The Minnesota trying to stop Starbuck now out of the shotgun.
00:48:23And get their hands on the ball again.
00:48:33And it was intended for Drew Pearson I believe.
00:48:36And he lost his balance.
00:48:38Drew and Nate Wright.
00:48:40Seemed to bump a little.
00:48:41And Drew almost went down.
00:48:43No interference called.
00:48:45So on a fourth and 11.
00:48:46And Randy White will have to kick it out.
00:48:49So the Vikings should be in pretty good field position now.
00:48:54Manfred Moore.
00:48:57Standing at midfield.
00:48:59Blaha to his left.
00:49:01And Graham to his right.
00:49:03And Danny White.
00:49:04Who made a very big play early in the game when he ran for a
00:49:07first down out of punt formation.
00:49:10You can see he asked to punt for the seventh time.
00:49:12He punted eighty three times.
00:49:14I snapped.
00:49:15But he got it away.
00:49:18And he hangs it.
00:49:19Moore at his own forty nine.
00:49:22And it is recovered.
00:49:24By.
00:49:25Jay.
00:49:26Salty.
00:49:29One of the most hellacious hits of the year.
00:49:32Thomas Henderson.
00:49:34What a shot he gave him that.
00:49:36He got the ball for a moment.
00:49:38I thought he was going to get it.
00:49:39So he got the ball for a moment.
00:49:41I thought he had.
00:49:42His head.
00:49:44Is so active on those kicking teams.
00:49:46You remember in New York when he picked up one around it for a
00:49:47touchdown.
00:49:48Look at the shot by Tom Henderson.
00:49:50As I say a big play man.
00:49:52Lewis on his spot.
00:49:53But Jay Salty beats him good.
00:50:00Another.
00:50:01Turnover.
00:50:02And the most important one especially now a 40 yard punt.
00:50:06And on that left by Henderson.
00:50:09The fumble by Manfred Moore.
00:50:11Recovered by Jay Salty.
00:50:13The Cowboys have it first and 10 on the Viking 35 yard line.
00:50:17650 left to go.
00:50:25Now back giving the new house.
00:50:27New house upended by Bobby Bryant.
00:50:30Who just threw a block at him to upend him at the line of
00:50:32scrimmage.
00:50:34And the little guy just kept flying for a while.
00:50:36I've been skilled and we'll find out if the Cowboys have any
00:50:38killer at him right now.
00:50:40Ice this game with a touchdown right here for all practical
00:50:42purposes.
00:50:43Just six minutes to go.
00:50:45By the way.
00:50:46In looking at Robert Newhouse everybody comments on his legs
00:50:49the size of his thighs.
00:50:51Next frame.
00:50:52Wanted it pointed out.
00:50:5526 inches.
00:50:57The thighs of Robert Newhouse.
00:50:59And there it goes.
00:51:00Newhouse.
00:51:01Again.
00:51:02Just running over.
00:51:03People.
00:51:04Inside.
00:51:05The.
00:51:0615 yard line.
00:51:08Just leaving people in his way.
00:51:10Tom Rafferty.
00:51:12Doing a great job on the trap.
00:51:15And Newhouse barrels to the 15.
00:51:19Shared determination by Bob Newhouse.
00:51:22I guess he's a little bit of a.
00:51:24I guess he's a little bit of a.
00:51:25Shared determination by Bob Newhouse.
00:51:27I guess he's a little bit embarrassed being in the backfield
00:51:29with Tony Dorsett if he didn't play well and this year he's
00:51:31played extremely well.
00:51:33Look at the determination here though in the balance.
00:51:35The low center of gravity there.
00:51:37But mostly it's just determination.
00:51:38Adult determination.
00:51:40He got away from Jeff Seaman who tried to bring him down with
00:51:42his hands.
00:51:44That's just about impossible.
00:51:46Though it is first in 10 from the Minnesota 15 528 left to go
00:51:50in the ballgame and the Cowboys are driving for New Orleans.
00:51:53Newhouse.
00:51:56Running into Sutherland.
00:52:00Now he stopped at the 15.
00:52:07Second and seven for the Cowboys and they have everything on
00:52:10their side now.
00:52:13Well when you speak of the Cowboys you speak of the balance
00:52:15of the great organization but offensively and defensively
00:52:18special teams are just a well balanced you can't point to
00:52:20anyone.
00:52:22I'm running down for the Cowboys.
00:52:25I'm running down for 51.
00:52:34And Tony inside a block by Newhouse but refusing to take
00:52:38the block was Nate Wright.
00:52:40Nice defensive play by Nate.
00:52:42Number 43.
00:52:44Shedding one block and making the tackle.
00:52:47Dorsett is not look good today.
00:52:49This was not ready to play football for whatever reason
00:52:51maybe it was the injuries or whatever but he's missed these
00:52:53holes.
00:52:55He was early in the ballgame limping off again.
00:52:57Jay with a bad right knee recovered the fumble when
00:53:00Manfred Moore was knocked free of the ball by Tom Henderson
00:53:04and solid comes out and for Bud Grant stoic unflappable.
00:53:09You'd never know whether he's winning or losing.
00:53:11In this instance he is losing 16 6 4 minutes and two seconds
00:53:15left to go on the ballgame.
00:53:17And we will have a timeout.
00:53:19Dallas with 359 left to go in the ballgame.
00:53:26Right.
00:53:27I think Roger Staubach seems to let that happen to him one
00:53:29time in every ballgame where he's going to stop the play
00:53:31call timeout go to the sidelines.
00:53:33I'm just curious what that is about.
00:53:35Stopping the land.
00:53:37Jim Myers I guess.
00:53:3931 years coaching experience and Jim Myers.
00:53:42You never get him mentioned.
00:53:43He's a member of the zero club too.
00:53:46For Roger Staubach a 10th round draft choice by Dallas.
00:53:51But a very good reason why.
00:53:52Dallas taking vows as well they should for a great draft.
00:53:56They also gambled because when Staubach graduated from the
00:53:59United States Naval Academy he had to go away for four years.
00:54:03That meant they were drafting a guy who wouldn't put on the
00:54:05uniform for almost five years but they figured he was worth
00:54:08waiting for.
00:54:10He has been well worth waiting.
00:54:12I would think.
00:54:13Look at the eyes of the hunter right there.
00:54:15You can just picture Bud Grant in a duck blind someplace.
00:54:17Look at those eyes.
00:54:18They dart.
00:54:19Scared me to death.
00:54:20The press conference the other day.
00:54:21What I see as.
00:54:23There's goody as they call him.
00:54:25Charles Goodrum.
00:54:28Standing on the sideline for the bike.
00:54:31Starbucks numbers.
00:54:3212 for 23 and one hundred and seventy five yards.
00:54:35Lee.
00:54:3612 for 26.
00:54:37One hundred and fifty five yards.
00:54:41Roger runs like a sissy.
00:54:43Why.
00:54:44Just drops like this.
00:54:46And we know it's not a good.
00:54:49Jeff Stephen comes out.
00:54:50Nate Allen comes in.
00:54:52Did you wear a helmet when you played.
00:54:54Better than six from the eleven.
00:54:59Golden Richard.
00:55:00In a slot inside Drew Pearson.
00:55:02Starbuck again from the shotgun.
00:55:05Inside handoff to Dorsett.
00:55:07He's following Scott.
00:55:09And he goes in for a touchdown.
00:55:13Inside handoff to Tony Dorsett.
00:55:17And away go the Cowboys.
00:55:21Dorsett can turn it on.
00:55:23Getting.
00:55:24Beautiful blocking that time with the Dallas Cowboys.
00:55:26Offensive line.
00:55:27Herbert Scott out there in front of it.
00:55:28Just the way you draw it up.
00:55:30They had just taken.
00:55:31Seaman out and put in Nate Allen.
00:55:33And so instead of the expected pass.
00:55:35The inside handoff.
00:55:37There's Scott.
00:55:38And.
00:55:39Nobody to block.
00:55:40It's just drawn up that way.
00:55:41Nate Wright came over and just.
00:55:43Took out the whole game's frustrations on it.
00:55:47Tony Dorsett carries it over for the big one.
00:55:50It is 22 to 6.
00:55:52Efren Herrera.
00:55:53Nobody will know.
00:55:54Makes it 23 to 6.
00:55:56And the Dallas Cowboys.
00:55:59Can be looking forward to Bourbon Street.
00:56:02The New Orleans Superdome.
00:56:04And they've got a date with the Denver Broncos.
00:56:11On the road to the Super Bowl.
00:56:12That's what it says.
00:56:13And that's certainly the feeling here in Irving Texas now.
00:56:16The Cowboys capitalizing on a fumble by Manfred Moore.
00:56:19On a vicious hit by Thomas Henderson.
00:56:21And they've cast it in as Dorsett.
00:56:23Scramble for the TD.
00:56:25Efren Herrera.
00:56:26Ready to kick off.
00:56:27Moore is deep.
00:56:29He is flanked by Sammy White.
00:56:30And Robert Miller.
00:56:32Instead it's a knuckleball down the left side.
00:56:34And it'll be picked up by Moore at the 12.
00:56:37To the 15.
00:56:40That's all.
00:56:42That time it was Mike Hegman.
00:56:44Number 58 who nailed him at the 20.
00:56:47And the battle is almost over.
00:56:48And so the Dallas Cowboy and the Minnesota Vikings shake hands on the sidelines.
00:56:53The battle however is still drawn down on the field.
00:56:56And that's Robert Miller.
00:56:58Who is hurt.
00:56:59Miller of course.
00:57:01The running back who had to play for Brent McClanahan.
00:57:04And Robert shaken up.
00:57:06As he tried to go back and block for Manfred Moore.
00:57:09He's played well Ben.
00:57:10Coming in.
00:57:11He saw very limited duty there.
00:57:13Until the injury to McClanahan.
00:57:15But he's played well the last two games.
00:57:17The timeout.
00:57:18Left in the game.
00:57:20Minnesota with three.
00:57:21Dallas to Miller.
00:57:23Apparently.
00:57:24Taking a pretty good.
00:57:25Lick to the head.
00:57:26And appeared wobbly.
00:57:28We saw Bruce Heather go off with a similar blow earlier in the game.
00:57:32We have three minutes and 43 seconds left in the game.
00:57:36It is 23 to 6.
00:57:37Cowboy.
00:57:39And the Vikes put it in play first and 10 on their own 20.
00:57:42And there is one of the big reasons why.
00:57:44The Dallas defense has been so tough on the Vikings.
00:57:47Who have had to settle for just two field goals.
00:57:49Ed.
00:57:50Too tall.
00:57:51Jones.
00:57:53He's been too tall.
00:57:54Too wide.
00:57:55And too fast.
00:57:56Too tough.
00:57:58First and 10 from the 20.
00:58:04Lee.
00:58:05Trying to hit.
00:58:06Of all people.
00:58:07Mark Washington.
00:58:09You don't usually see a defensive back.
00:58:11Try to spear that one.
00:58:12He just couldn't quite get to it.
00:58:14The pass closer to Mark than anybody else.
00:58:17I guess he did.
00:58:18Bob Lee.
00:58:19You don't.
00:58:20You don't envy his position when you got to try to play catch up football.
00:58:24With that offensive team he's got to get to the great Dallas defense.
00:58:27Bob Lee is 12 for 27 for 155 yards.
00:58:31But he has been unable.
00:58:33To get a touchdown.
00:58:35Two field goals.
00:58:36That has been the story.
00:58:37Five backs in looking for the pass for Dallas.
00:58:40Second and 10 from the 20.
00:58:44Tommy White in a slot left inside Grimm.
00:58:47But it's a little release to Foreman and he can't hold it.
00:58:50He was trying to bring it with him.
00:58:52And he left it behind.
00:58:54Mike Heckman there.
00:58:55To retrieve the bobble.
00:58:57I'll tell you who hates this type of ball game.
00:58:59It's offensive ladder.
00:59:00When the defense gets the ball.
00:59:01It's offensive ladder.
00:59:02It's offensive ladder.
00:59:03It's offensive ladder.
00:59:04I'll tell you who hates this type of ball game.
00:59:06It's offensive ladder.
00:59:07When the defense knows you're going to pass.
00:59:08They still got to just.
00:59:10Put up the chin straps and go ahead and know.
00:59:12They're going to get the strong pass rush.
00:59:14They hate it.
00:59:15What are you going to do.
00:59:19Time left in the ballgame.
00:59:21333.
00:59:23And for Minnesota when you look back at the numbers.
00:59:26The key for the Vikings today.
00:59:28The same key that has haunted them all year.
00:59:30That surprisingly stood up and allowed them to get in the playoff.
00:59:32They had 18 turnovers during the year.
00:59:35They survived no turnovers in Los Angeles.
00:59:37And today it has killed them.
00:59:40Third and 10 from the 20.
00:59:43Mark Keller is in there now for Robert Miller.
00:59:46The pass to Foreman and he takes it out of bounds.
00:59:48With Mark Washington in pursuit.
00:59:50At the 29 yard line.
00:59:55The Chuck Foreman.
00:59:57Handling the pass at the 29.
00:59:59We can take another look.
01:00:00Bob Lee going just taking.
01:00:02He's a pretty disciplined quarterback.
01:00:04And he's taking what they give him.
01:00:06It wasn't enough for the first down that time.
01:00:08But who knows when you get the ball to Chuck Foreman.
01:00:10Chuck tries to but there's just no room to work on that sideline.
01:00:13So he brings up a fourth down situation.
01:00:15They have no choice but to go for it.
01:00:17Behold the turtle.
01:00:19The only time it makes progress is when he sticks his neck out.
01:00:21You like that Bill.
01:00:23Of course you do.
01:00:25Fourth and one.
01:00:28And a touchdown.
01:00:30It's going to be Chuck Foreman.
01:00:32And he has got himself the first down.
01:00:34The ball comes squirting out of there like a cork out of a champagne bottle.
01:00:38But it was after the whistle.
01:00:42So Foreman will pick up the first down.
01:00:44We have three minutes and 20 seconds remaining.
01:00:47You're looking at double sevens.
01:00:49Big Bill Gregory and there is Chuck Foreman.
01:00:52Foreman so far today.
01:00:54Has caught five passes for 36 yards.
01:00:57He has carried the ball 21 times.
01:00:58For 56 yards.
01:01:00Remember last week he carried the ball 31 times against the Rams.
01:01:04I think 33 the game before.
01:01:06The point being that they just hammer him day after game after game.
01:01:10And he responds to him after the game.
01:01:13First and 10 from the 32.
01:01:16Lee over the right side to Ahmad Rashad.
01:01:19And Benny Barnes there to bring him down.
01:01:21Now Lee is going to have to go up field with it.
01:01:23He hasn't got enough time to do any damage with that little shortstop.
01:01:27Do any damage with that little shortstop like that.
01:01:29Picked up two. It'll make it second and eighth.
01:01:31A reminder. The great show 60 minutes will be seen in its entirety.
01:01:35Immediately following this game.
01:01:37Except on the West Coast where it will be seen at its usual time.
01:01:42Time remaining.
01:01:44Two thirty two.
01:01:50Out to the left side.
01:01:52And it is picked off by Thomas Henderson.
01:01:54He took it away from Sammy Johnson.
01:01:57And another turnover.
01:01:59Although that is the first interception.
01:02:01Thomas Henderson.
01:02:03Who hit Manfred Moore and caused the fumble that led to a touchdown.
01:02:08Now comes up with the interception.
01:02:10The big playmaker for the Dallas Cowboys.
01:02:12Tom Henderson.
01:02:14Just an excellent athlete has been pointed out so many many times.
01:02:17In passing situations you can't get near that guy.
01:02:20He's got too much range.
01:02:21Bob Lee shaking his head.
01:02:23Oh yeah.
01:02:25Henderson picked off one at 179 yards against Tampa Bay earlier this year for a touchdown.
01:02:30So it's first to 10 on the 41 of Minnesota.
01:02:33Two twenty three left in the game.
01:02:37Robert Newhouse.
01:02:39McNeil tried to tackle him and couldn't and he picked up 10 more yards.
01:02:44And I'll tell you.
01:02:46Fred McNeil was a weary weary player who tried to tackle him.
01:02:49And you're not going to bring Newhouse down when your arms are like lead.
01:02:56Well that ought to be an interesting matchup in the Super Bowl.
01:02:59Denver against the Cowboys.
01:03:01And rightfully so.
01:03:03Dallas Cowboys is a team that should represent the National Football Conference.
01:03:05And the two minute warning.
01:03:07And so the Sands have just about run out for the Vikings.
01:03:10The Dallas Cowboys 23.
01:03:12The Minnesota Vikings 6.
01:03:14Well a gallon Minnesota Viking team.
01:03:17Not really outmatched by the Dallas Cowboys.
01:03:20But instead four damaging turnovers.
01:03:23And the Cowboys now are exactly two minutes away from New Orleans.
01:03:28First and 10 on that interception by Thomas Henderson.
01:03:32The Cowboys now trying to cash in yet another.
01:03:35And Robert Newhouse.
01:03:37Wally Hilgenberg.
01:03:39Tried to bring him down from behind.
01:03:40But he just ran right by Wally.
01:03:42Interesting to compare.
01:03:44Dorsett and Newhouse.
01:03:46Prior to that play.
01:03:48They had each rush for 71 yards.
01:03:51You talk about a well rounded ground attack.
01:03:54Both running backs equal number of yardage.
01:03:57The appearance of Dorsett on the field makes the defense think a little different.
01:04:01Newhouse taking full advantage of that.
01:04:03He's been waiting for a back.
01:04:05Take the heat off him for some time.
01:04:07From the 21 yard line.
01:04:08From the 21 yard line.
01:04:10It is second and five Cowboys.
01:04:12You can see the time running down in the right hand corner.
01:04:16Stavak to Newhouse.
01:04:19And again.
01:04:21He gets through weary tackle attempts.
01:04:23Stood well.
01:04:25Had his arms around him.
01:04:27He just slithered down.
01:04:34Robert Newhouse.
01:04:35Threw a shoe on that last turn.
01:04:37With less than a minute to go.
01:04:43So the Vikings with a minus 18 in turnovers during the year.
01:04:47Turned it over four times.
01:04:49Dallas turned it over twice.
01:04:51The Cowboys have been able to score.
01:04:54The Vikings only two field goals.
01:04:56And it is 23 to 6 Dallas.
01:05:02And it's Newhouse again.
01:05:03And once more.
01:05:05It looks like he's going to be hit behind the line of scrimmage.
01:05:08Stood well and Maloney converged on him.
01:05:11But he still picked up a yard or so.
01:05:13And of course it's all over with 30 seconds left.
01:05:17And so to the Super Bowl.
01:05:19On the 15th of January.
01:05:21And it will be.
01:05:23Hail to the Dallas Cowboys.
01:05:25Hail to the Denver Broncos.
01:05:27And time will run out.
01:05:29Without another play.
01:05:30Without another play.
01:05:32The Super Bowl right here.
01:05:34On CBS.
01:05:36From the Superdome.
01:05:38January the 15th.
01:05:40The Dallas Cowboys.
01:05:42Who won a Super Bowl when they beat.
01:05:44Miami.
01:05:4624 to 3.
01:05:48Will have the chance to win yet another.
01:05:51We are just a few seconds away.
01:05:5323 6 Dallas.
01:05:54With 13 seconds left.
01:05:56Ralph Neely just came out.
01:05:58Got bear hugs from his teammates.
01:06:00He will play yet another game.
01:06:02In the Super Bowl.
01:06:04As the Cowboys.
01:06:06Let the time run out.
01:06:08The Dallas Cowboys.
01:06:10Tom Landry and company.
01:06:12Have done what just about everybody.
01:06:14Figured they would do.
01:06:16They beat the Vikings.
01:06:1823 to 6.
01:06:20And to a gallant Minnesota ball player.
01:06:21Had they not done what they had
01:06:22done all year.
01:06:24They might have been a lot closer.
01:06:26But of course the four turnovers
01:06:28really kill them to such a strong
01:06:30machine as Dallas.
01:06:32We'll have locker room reports.
01:06:34So don't go away.
01:06:36Even though the final paragraph of
01:06:38the game story has been written.
01:06:40There are sidebars and notes to
01:06:41come.
01:06:43But let it be duly noted from
01:06:44Dallas.
01:06:46The Cowboys 23 to 6.
01:06:48There have been some great players
01:06:49in the game today.
01:06:51Let's meet one of them.
01:06:53Two tall Jones will go to Gary
01:06:54Bender.
01:06:56Job you guys did today.
01:06:58Held him without a touchdown.
01:07:00That's right.
01:07:01You know it's like last week when
01:07:02we played Chicago we knew that
01:07:03we had to contain Walter Payton
01:07:04up front.
01:07:05Well this week it was the same
01:07:06thing with Chuck Foreman and
01:07:07Alain played a hell of a game I
01:07:09think.
01:07:10And as a result win the Super
01:07:11Bowl.
01:07:12You know they were running your
01:07:13side today with Chuck Foreman.
01:07:15Well that right handed team and
01:07:16you know just run out of stuff
01:07:17that all week long we were
01:07:18hoping they'd run outside
01:07:19because you know I feel like
01:07:21Jeff wrote I can gamble a lot
01:07:23cover for me and that's what
01:07:24was happening today.
01:07:25You know the Vikings they're
01:07:26quite a team though they hung in
01:07:28there it looked like they still
01:07:29had a couple of chances to come
01:07:30back.
01:07:31When do they do that.
01:07:32A lot of teams would have given
01:07:33up.
01:07:34You know after the third quarter
01:07:35but the Vikings been there
01:07:36before.
01:07:37They know what it takes to win
01:07:38it and the people in Minnesota
01:07:39I think should really be proud
01:07:40of them because they hung in
01:07:41there and fought all the way.
01:07:42And did you know that the
01:07:43Denver one.
01:07:44I'm sure you did.
01:07:45Yes.
01:07:46And I'm really happy with
01:07:47Denver and I think it'll be a
01:07:49totally different game from the
01:07:50game we played him here the last
01:07:51game of the regular season they
01:07:52were playing without Craig
01:07:53Martin and Craig I think is an
01:07:55excellent quarterback and I
01:07:56expect a tough game here in the
01:07:58Super Bowl and 75 you get to go
01:08:00back again.
01:08:01That's right.
01:08:02And I love it.
01:08:03And you know a game like this
01:08:05the Vikings came in everybody
01:08:06said they shouldn't be here.
01:08:07That old veteran team.
01:08:08But you guys you feared him.
01:08:10Well you know I'm a veteran
01:08:12when they gave us an 11 point
01:08:13favorite you know I knew how it
01:08:15would affect those guys and I
01:08:16figured they'd come in here
01:08:17really fired up.
01:08:18So what we tried to do was not
01:08:20get fired on the first day.
01:08:21We'll see you in New Orleans.
01:08:22Thank you.
01:08:23All right.
01:08:24Now let's go to Brett Musburger.
01:08:26Hi Gary.
01:08:27Thank you very much.
01:08:28Jimmy the great.
01:08:29It is the Dallas Cowboys and the
01:08:30Denver Broncos and who do you
01:08:32favor in the Super Bowl on
01:08:33January 15th.
01:08:34Well the last time the National
01:08:35Football Conference was favored
01:08:38was when Dallas was in the
01:08:39Super Bowl.
01:08:40And when they beat Miami.
01:08:41So we're going to make them
01:08:42favored one more time by about
01:08:45how much.
01:08:46Great.
01:08:47What's one of those kicks.
01:08:49I think it's a field goal.
01:08:50I think that's three points.
01:08:51That's right.
01:08:52It should be a whale of a ball
01:08:54game.
01:08:55Those two teams met in the last
01:08:57regularly scheduled game of the
01:08:58season 14 to 6 I believe Dallas
01:09:01finally won it.
01:09:02But the Craig Morton sidebar so
01:09:04many stories to that Super Bowl.
01:09:06You can take that last game of
01:09:07the year Britain throw it out
01:09:08the window.
01:09:09Because of the Super Bowl game
01:09:10as Jack Whitaker indicated in
01:09:11his pregame analysis it's a
01:09:13second season.
01:09:14And when you go to a
01:09:15championship game like that you
01:09:16have to play really literally
01:09:17one play at a time.
01:09:19There was a big controversy in
01:09:21the Oakland Denver game today.
01:09:24Was it or wasn't it a fumble
01:09:26when Lytle was trying to go
01:09:27over.
01:09:28They ruled no fumble on the play
01:09:30and Denver retained possession.
01:09:32But it is a wild controversy.
01:09:33John Madden has complained and
01:09:35the league has issued this
01:09:36official statement that we got
01:09:37from UPI the official Ed Marion
01:09:39who was the headlinesman said
01:09:41that progress had been stopped
01:09:42and that play he blew the
01:09:44whistle.
01:09:45And then according to Marion the
01:09:46player lost possession as he was
01:09:48falling backward.
01:09:50But I think Jimmy and also that
01:09:52controversy is not over with the
01:09:53statement.
01:09:54We saw the play and the way we
01:09:56saw it it looked as though that
01:09:57he'd been hit at the line of
01:09:58scrimmage the ball that popped
01:09:59out.
01:10:00I couldn't tell her we covered
01:10:01the fumble.
01:10:02I assumed it was a fumble.
01:10:03But the only question I had in
01:10:04my mind is who recovered it.
01:10:05Let's face it.
01:10:06They blew it again.
01:10:08I don't think we should demean
01:10:09the tremendous job that the
01:10:10Denver Broncos have done all
01:10:11year because of the one call
01:10:13out in that game.
01:10:14That is Super Bowl.
01:10:15That's right.
01:10:16Absolutely.
01:10:17And we don't know what might
01:10:18happen even if they've given the
01:10:19ball to Oakland.
01:10:20They will continue on CBS in
01:10:22just a moment.
01:10:30To tell us what it all means
01:10:31today.
01:10:32Let's go down on the field and
01:10:33Jack Whitaker for his
01:10:34perspective.
01:10:35Jack.
01:10:36Thank you Brent.
01:10:37I'm not sure what it all means
01:10:38other than what everybody knows
01:10:39that Dallas goes to the Super
01:10:40Bowl and that's the way it
01:10:41should be because Dallas is the
01:10:43best club in the NFC.
01:10:45And in this year when it's
01:10:46become embarrassingly clear that
01:10:48the NFC is below the AFC in
01:10:50quality it is absolutely
01:10:52necessary that Dallas should
01:10:53have won their way to the Super
01:10:54Bowl.
01:10:55At the very least the Cowboys
01:10:56will not embarrass the NFC.
01:10:59It also proves I guess that the
01:11:01track record if you look up
01:11:02past performances they pay off
01:11:04Denver and Dallas are the
01:11:05winningest teams this year in
01:11:06their records and they're going
01:11:07to meet in New Orleans.
01:11:09It should be a classic
01:11:10confrontation.
01:11:11Dallas going there for a fourth
01:11:12time which ties the record held
01:11:14by Minnesota.
01:11:15Denver of course playing for the
01:11:16very first time experience
01:11:18against a very emotional team
01:11:20who is higher than the city in
01:11:21which they play.
01:11:23So Dallas against Denver.
01:11:25I think it should be a very
01:11:26interesting and refreshing Super
01:11:28Bowl in two weeks.
01:11:29And we'll see you all there.
01:11:30You too Brent.
01:11:32Thank you very much Jack.
01:11:33I would have to agree.
01:11:34So on the afternoon of January
01:11:3615th from the Superdome in New
01:11:38Orleans it will be the Dallas
01:11:40Cowboys in the Super Bowl for
01:11:42the fourth time against the
01:11:44Denver Broncos.
01:11:45And why not.
01:11:46Those two teams overall have the
01:11:48best records in the league this
01:11:49year won 14 times and lost only
01:11:52two.
01:11:53Right now.
01:11:54Let's go down to the Dallas
01:11:55Cowboy locker room and Tim Ryan
01:11:57Thank you Brent here with Coach
01:11:58Tom Landry.
01:11:59He must be a happy man today
01:12:00that's a young team of yours
01:12:01performed so well especially
01:12:02your defense and special teams.
01:12:04Yes we thought we thought we
01:12:05had an excellent defensive game
01:12:06today.
01:12:07We were able to contain them
01:12:08most of the day and our and then
01:12:09our specialty came through with
01:12:10Danny White running a great hit
01:12:12there that set up the last
01:12:13touchdown for us.
01:12:15Offensively we weren't quite as
01:12:16good today as we were last week
01:12:18but overall the team played very
01:12:20well.
01:12:21How did you prepare for this
01:12:22game against Bob Lee as compared
01:12:24to pairing coaches.
01:12:25Well it's a lot different with
01:12:26Fran talking to him because you
01:12:27have to you have to get the
01:12:28roles you know he's excellent at
01:12:30rolling hitting his tight end
01:12:31taking care of hitting Foreman
01:12:32and just a little different
01:12:33leaves back in the pocket more
01:12:35he throws more from the pocket.
01:12:37Make it easier for you.
01:12:38I don't know.
01:12:39I'm sure it makes it easier not
01:12:40when you're not playing
01:12:41Tarkington and I would want to
01:12:42take this opportunity to
01:12:43congratulate the Vikings.
01:12:44You know they did a tremendous
01:12:45job after losing a great
01:12:46quarterback like Tarkin and
01:12:47getting into the championship
01:12:48game and you have to get the
01:12:49roles you know he's excellent at
01:12:50rolling hitting his tight end
01:12:51taking care of hitting Foreman
01:12:52and just a little different
01:12:53leaves back in the pocket more
01:12:54you know he's excellent at
01:12:55rolling hitting his tight end
01:12:56taking care of hitting Foreman
01:12:57and getting into the championship
01:12:58game and you have to give him
01:12:59all the credit.
01:13:00Now you've got Denver to face.
01:13:02I'm sure you weren't spending
01:13:03most of the afternoon watching
01:13:04that game.
01:13:05How much did you see.
01:13:06I don't know whether we're far
01:13:07enough away from Denver and New
01:13:08Orleans or not but I'm glad
01:13:09we're not playing him up in
01:13:10Denver because they sure have an
01:13:12enthusiastic people and they
01:13:13played a great had a great year
01:13:15and they played super from what
01:13:16I saw and I saw half the ball
01:13:17game today and they were really
01:13:18all over everybody should make
01:13:20an exciting Super Bowl.
01:13:21Thank you coach Tom Landry.
01:13:22Let's go back to Brent
01:13:24Landry the only coach in the
01:13:25history of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:13:27The Denver Broncos have been a
01:13:28struggling franchise.
01:13:30This is the first time that
01:13:31they've ever been in the NFL
01:13:32playoffs and suddenly they wind
01:13:34up going all the way to the
01:13:36Super Bowl under Red Miller.
01:13:38Many folks around the NFL said
01:13:39that Red Miller would never make
01:13:40a good head coach because he was
01:13:42too much one of the boys and oh
01:13:44how wrong Red Miller proved
01:13:45everyone this year.
01:13:46And on the afternoon of January
01:13:4815th it will be Denver and
01:13:50Dallas for the Super Bowl Super
01:13:52Bowl 12 and CBS will have all
01:13:54the action.
01:13:55But that's just the beginning
01:13:56because tomorrow afternoon from
01:13:58the Cotton Bowl the showdown for
01:14:00number one the unbeaten Texas
01:14:02Longhorns against the once
01:14:04beaten fighting Irish of Notre
01:14:06Dame.
01:14:07They'll kick it off tomorrow at
01:14:082 p.m.
01:14:09Eastern time.
01:14:11So for Ben Scully Alex Hawkins
01:14:13Jimmy the great cross Tim Ryan
01:14:17Gary Bender and everyone else
01:14:19who helped us make this quite a
01:14:21day for the NFC.
