The Miami Dolphins open their training camp today. There is excitement for the start of camp even with Tua's contract extension not signed. Tua vs. Trevor Lawrence... Who do you question more?
Transcript
00:00And this is a big day.
00:00Dolphins training camp is here upon us.
00:02Now, Mike McDaniel's speaking.
00:03That's going to take a good 35 minutes.
00:05Oh, we got time.
00:06We got time to chop it up.
00:07We got time.
00:08Hey, by the time you chop that up and break it down and get,
00:14you know, it's not on permit, it'll be the end of the show.
00:16What are you talking about?
00:17Three minute answers for one question.
00:19Right, that's what I'm saying.
00:20But you got to go through the whole thing to get one.
00:24Not even.
00:25All you got to do is find where he starts
00:27and then find when he ends, and just that's it.
00:29Because it's going to be a long, long answer.
00:34How would you like to be the coach?
00:36You finally get some momentum.
00:38I mean, look, as the head coach, you
00:40understand your circumstance at the end of last year
00:43and how some of a role.
00:46I would say Mike McDaniel understands
00:47what his role was, how the defense actually,
00:52as banged up as they were, gave you a chance
00:55to win all those games, right?
00:58So you got to feel good about that.
01:02But to be put in this situation when you think you on a roll
01:08and getting things moving forward, right?
01:11It's got to be awkward.
01:13Has to be.
01:14For sure.
01:16Yeah, I think it's definitely got to be a little bit weird.
01:19And, you know, like they got to fix those things.
01:22He's obviously been very obsessive about that
01:25with what they got to do, because they've
01:27gotten out to two fast starts in both of his seasons
01:30as Dolphins head coach.
01:318-3, 9-3.
01:32They did a new bill.
01:33Remember the bills used to do that all the time.
01:35I don't like that, but you're right.
01:36Yeah.
01:37Well, it was funny yesterday, because Jordan Poyer
01:39had these comments about he basically said,
01:43I didn't really like it, but I can't really say.
01:45I can't really disagree with him.
01:47He's just in the honest tree.
01:48But new Dolphins safety, who, of course,
01:50played for the Bills for a long time, Jordan Poyer
01:52was basically saying, he goes, yeah,
01:54he goes, the knock on the Dolphins is,
01:56he says that you feel like if you punch them back,
01:58they're going to fold.
02:00And that the, which, and I'm just, I know, Vlad.
02:03It hurts.
02:04It hurts to hear that from a new Dolphin.
02:06But you know who you can't do that with?
02:09A team who has a physical run game,
02:12because the mentality of your team.
02:14And that's why I say, when you get down
02:17to the end of those games, and the team is bearing down
02:21and know they can come after you any kind of way,
02:24because you're not going to respond with any pressure
02:28or any physicality, that's how it looks clunky
02:32at the end of the games.
02:33And so, you know, you see what Baltimore did.
02:37Yeah, they got Derrick Henry.
02:38They got, and they said, you know what?
02:40Look, we like what Lamar does.
02:43We like the fact that he runs the ball.
02:46But he can't be your running back at the end of the games.
02:49He can't.
02:51And so I love the fact that everybody
02:56says the running back position is a dying breed.
03:02Like, you don't need one.
03:03You can do it, you know.
03:04But it always seems, in most cases,
03:08that team that has that dude at the end of football
03:11games in December and January are having some success.
03:18There are exceptions to the rule.
03:19So like, everybody calm down.
03:22Now, so when I heard Raheem Mostert yesterday
03:25say that, when he was like, oh, what's the evolution for him?
03:27He goes, me, more in the passing game.
03:29I was like, no, wait, we have enough of that.
03:32Or is he just fast enough where it's like, that's fine.
03:35He's just, he's just, because he obviously
03:37had success running the football last year.
03:39Well, it all has to do with, like,
03:43think of what he's saying in basketball, the pick and roll.
03:49Well, you run eight pick and rolls
03:50till you get the mismatch you want.
03:52It's not necessary that he's going to be a receiver.
03:57But if you find a situation where
04:00you have a linebacker that's going to guard Mostert,
04:06then you take advantage of that.
04:07And I think that's where he was getting at with that,
04:09that he's going to become a viable receiver when
04:16the mismatch presents itself.
04:18That's all.
04:19That's all he's saying.
04:21So when you and I weren't able to hear each other
04:24last segment, Reggie, the Mike McDaniel comments.
04:27I could hear you.
04:28Yeah, I know you could hear me.
04:29But just so your reaction of Tua is, I guess,
04:33going to start off this week, which, mind you,
04:35it's not a week they can even put pads on,
04:37I think, probably till Sunday.
04:38I don't even think they put pads on.
04:40But Tua not doing 11 on 11s.
04:42He did seven on sevens in OTAs.
04:44But they said they're going to basically do the OTA plan
04:47for the time being.
04:49That's fine.
04:51Yeah?
04:52I don't feel like you're going to miss too much of a beat
04:53early on.
04:55Listen, here's the kicker with all of this.
05:00There's going to be a lot of guys that they gradually
05:05bring into it, including Tyreek and Waddle,
05:09who are not going to be running Odell.
05:12They're not going to be running every damn play
05:14because you don't want them wide open in week one of the camp.
05:21So they kind of gradually get all of them in there.
05:24So you have more guys, more rotations.
05:27You have to understand that in the preseason,
05:30the guys that are going to play most of the plays,
05:33you better know what the hell they doing.
05:34So you use this opportunity to do that.
05:37Now, are they practicing against anybody this?
05:40They are.
05:41That was what I was thinking.
05:44The first one that I think probably matters
05:47is they got two joint practices coming up August 6th
05:51and 7th against the Falcons.
05:53There you have it.
05:55You'll get a lot of work there, Tyreek.
05:58And they'll get some work there.
06:01And so you just kind of go about it.
06:04You can't run around full speed for five weeks or four weeks
06:11and then say, hey, let's go play an 18-game season, right?
06:17So the problem with this is that even though it's
06:22very normal because of the circumstances surrounding it,
06:27we may make it be something that it's not, right?
06:31So if Tua's not playing quarterback on every damn play,
06:35somebody's going to, ooh, Tyreek ran around,
06:39and Tua wasn't the quarterback, or ooh.
06:43And so let's just take it easy on this, right?
06:49Everybody's being, you know, because what ended up happening
06:53with Christian Wilkins is they made, I'm almost guessing,
06:58they said, we're not going to franchise you.
07:02And that was the deal, right?
07:04So I don't know if they worked some kind of deal with Tua.
07:09I don't know if, you know, they tried to get something done.
07:14But let's not make a big deal in camp of Tua, ooh,
07:23Tua missed five plays in a row.
07:25And that's the kind of reporting you're going to get.
07:28And it's going to make a mountain out of a molehill,
07:31right?
07:32Because now you've got to tell me, OK, then
07:35what did he do when he was under?
07:36When did he do last year?
07:38And you're not comparing that.
07:40You see what I'm saying?
07:42Yeah, and I don't think there's, like, look, there's, I'm sorry.
07:44I don't care if Skylar Thompson goes 100 for 100 out there,
07:49or Mike White.
07:50They ain't taking the job, or anything like that's
07:52going to happen.
07:53So I think for this, they've avoided most of the drama.
07:58Like you said, I think that if they could get a deal done
08:00by the time there's joint practices,
08:02because that's probably, like, the first real best
08:04war work that you get, if that happens.
08:07In fairness to everybody involved,
08:11if you were working to get something
08:12done by joint practices, you could have got it
08:14done before camp started.
08:15I know, I know, I know.
08:17You see what I'm saying?
08:18So, but I would say this.
08:20The only thing that just kind of discourages me,
08:25and kind of upsets me, is we all want people on our team
08:31to behave the way, and handle themselves,
08:35the way Christian Wilkins and Tua Tagovailoa
08:38have handled themselves.
08:40Since, and Tua has been a tougher path, right?
08:44Because they were playing defense against him
08:47in their own franchise for the first two years.
08:50And now, because he's in year four,
08:52we're going to just ignore that, right?
08:56So, I'm more upset about that.
09:00You take care of your guys.
09:02Yeah, I totally agree.
09:04But I do think that he has handled this A plus.
09:08All of his teammates publicly are backing him,
09:10and are in his corner on this.
09:14And it doesn't feel like it's going to be a thing.
09:17Like, they got other things.
09:18Honestly, they got other things to worry about
09:20way more than him.
09:21Exactly.
09:22Like, we question the defense.
09:24What are we going to do?
09:26Yeah, we got to worry about, hey, is this going to work?
09:29Can we last until everybody's legs work?
09:32Are we going to be all right?
09:34Can they get through this?
09:36That's such a bigger issue.
09:38This is the sexy, juicy issue.
09:40But it's really not.
09:42Because Tua is a vet of this offense.
09:45Him and Mike McDaniel have a great relationship.
09:47Whatever happens business-wise, will happen business-wise.
09:50But football-wise, it's really, I mean,
09:52like, they're going to be as in key in running that system
09:57as they've always been, I feel like.
10:00And by the way, Odell Beckham's not even like,
10:02Odell started on the Pup List.
10:03So it's not even like his new toy
10:05is out there to get wrapped with.
10:07Which is another thing.
10:08We explained the Pup List.
10:10So everybody's aware.
10:11Doesn't mean anything that big.
10:13It's not that big of a deal.
10:15Now, I will say this.
10:17Do you think it's because he's going to go to Fiji for the Love
10:19Island reunion?
10:22Dude, stop.
10:23Why?
10:24He's got to be there.
10:26I will say this.
10:28That if there's a situation that I
10:32think the Dolphins could handle based on their schedule,
10:36it is the situation with the injured players.
10:38Because their schedule, everything
10:41is kind of backloaded, correct?
10:43Now, I'm saying that without knowing what.
10:46We're treating teams like no other team
10:48is going to get better.
10:49Like they're going to stay the same way they were last year.
10:52Well, it's going to be a fun first.
10:54The first week is going to be a sexy matchup.
10:56Because, I mean, like the Trevor Lawrence to a thing
10:59is going to be a thing.
11:00And so to immediately, like it's not like Jacksonville.
11:03I don't think they're a world beater.
11:05But it's not a, I don't think they're problems either.
11:09They're solid on defense.
11:10You still have questions.
11:11Now, I'll tell you what.
11:14And correct me if I'm wrong.
11:16I got more questions about Trevor Lawrence
11:18continuing to tour.
11:21Yeah, I do too.
11:22Right.
11:24And this is not because I'm here in Miami.
11:27No, I'm just looking at the way they've
11:30played the last two years, OK?
11:33I have more questions about Trevor Lawrence in the future
11:38than I do tour.
11:40No, I think that the start of their schedule is not easy.
11:45But I think it's, but it's, I think
11:47they're going to be good early tests.
11:49Like they got Jacksonville and Buffalo to start the season,
11:52both at home.
11:53So it's, but the thing that's, the thing that's
11:56noticeable about the end of the season, a lot of road games,
11:59cold games, you know, like those are the tests that they're
12:02going to have to face for sure.
12:04Don't, please don't.
12:06We're not going to start this early.
12:08About the cold.
12:09No, you know, everybody that plays in Florida
12:11are not from Florida, right?
12:14Well, I know.
12:15It just happened to be, it just happened to be luck
12:17that after they pooped their pants,
12:19that they had to go play the coldest game in history.
12:21Well, that, now that, let me tell you.
12:25That's why, I know Vlad, it was a punishment.
12:27It was a deserved punishment.
12:29Contrary to popular belief, right?
12:32Nobody is accustomed to that weather.
12:36Like they make it sound like, ooh,
12:38it didn't bother Kansas City.
12:39That's a bunch of BS.
12:41It is cold for everybody.
12:44And I don't know why people think that.
12:46Oh, I would, listen, if I had a choice of playing
12:50in minus four degrees at home or 80 on the road,
12:55I'd take my chances on the road.
12:56That's an honor to me.
12:57Patrick Mahomes had his helmet shatter like a piece of ice.
13:01Right.
13:01Like, I don't know what people thinking.
13:04Like, dude, it's cold for everybody.
13:06And you know what?
13:07You know when it gets warmer?
13:08When you're winning.
13:10Then everybody acts like the cold don't bother them.
13:12But they lying.
13:13They ain't telling the truth.
13:16It's cold.
13:18Yo, you can't feel your hands.
13:21Your feet feel like two-by-fours.
13:23And you trying to run.
13:24And your coach, catch the ball, catch the ball.
13:26I'm like, I told my hands to go get it.
13:29And they didn't go up there as fast as I would like, coach.
13:32I'm sorry.
13:34By the way, great news led by Dade South here.
13:39On the call for the first two weeks of Dolphins games,
13:43Kevin Harlan.
13:44Oh, yeah.
13:47He's got the magic juice.
13:49He got the juice, right?
13:50He's got the juice, dude, every time he calls a Dolphins game.
13:54I can't.
13:56I'm excited for the start of the season.
13:58But I want the season to start off good, right?
14:05Just simply because when you're not playing football,
14:11people make up crap, right?
14:14People forget what actually happened, right?
14:18We talking about all of the stuff of last year
14:23and all of the stuff that happened
14:24at the end of the year, right?
14:28We go immediately to Tua and say,
14:31he can't get us over the hump.
14:33He's a bum, right?
14:35And that, and you know, when we have arguments,
14:40our biggest argument is putting a team sport on a player
14:45when there's so many other things going on around it.
14:49Right, because you want to know something, dude?
14:51The real talk of it is the one player
14:54is a player you shouldn't have out there,
14:55and that's Eichenberg.
14:58The offensive line was fine, though.
15:01Yeah, I don't know what he was in there doing.
15:04Here, the offensive line was fine,
15:07but part of the reason why it was fine
15:09was the way Tua got rid of the ball.
15:12You see what I'm saying?
15:14So from that standpoint,
15:16while you talking and criticizing Tua,
15:19Tua is also helping your offensive line
15:20who you said was garbage two years ago.
15:25Yeah, now it's a question of, all right,
15:27is how many games can I get from Teron?
15:30That's always a question.
15:32Yeah, you know you're getting four games minimum.
15:34He's missing. That's guaranteed.
15:36I think I take that.
15:38Because, wait, he's going to sit out
15:40the last two weeks regardless.
15:41And he's going to miss at least two games during the season.
15:45So it's always, you can always say four games.
15:48I take it right now.
15:50Yeah, I'd take at least, if he only missed four.
15:53I'm saying 12 games.
15:56So that's, you missed five.
15:58Yeah, that's good.
15:59I would definitely take that.
16:01Yeah, when I say minimum, it's like playing on spades.
16:04I'm giving you board.
16:05The board is going to miss you four games.
16:08It's getting missed a little bit more than the four games.
16:10Yeah, he got four in a possible.
16:13Four in a possible.
16:15Cap says Eichenberg helped Tua get those hollow passing yards.
16:18Dude, you're nuts, dude.
16:19I mean, honestly, that guy had such lollipop snaps.
16:21As soon as that dude, he is a torpedo.
16:26He is a torpedo.
16:27I'm telling you right now.
16:30I guess ones that don't matter.
16:31I don't know.
16:32But let me tell you something.
16:34You watch that Eichenberg.
16:36First of all, he's played like every position on the line.
16:38They've tried.
16:39They've tried with him.
16:39Could also be a problem as to why
16:40he can't be successful at one.
16:43Or maybe he just stinks at them all.
16:45No.
16:46We ever think about that?
16:46We ever think about that?
16:47Hear what I would always say.
16:49Hear what I would always say about that, right?
16:53What you think could be valid.
16:57But what's more valid is the fact that you got people
17:01whose jobs are on the line still putting them out there.
17:04So that means they think he has some talent.
17:07Dude, it's because he's a second round pick.
17:09That's why.
17:10Whatever the reason is.
17:13That's why.
