00:00Up for the layup, oh, blocked by James!
00:03Larry Burns scores 60 points.
00:05Look at the Boston players marveling.
00:07Michael Jordan is not only the best basketball player,
00:09but he's the most exciting basketball player to ever play.
00:12Retainer fires away.
00:14Puffs it in, 51 for Jason Sanders.
00:18The Big 3 NBA podcast is powered by the Game Time app.
00:25Hey everyone, welcome to the Big 3 NBA podcast.
00:27I'm Kwanye Lunas, joined, as always, with Charade Blakey.
00:31Gary Washburn, almost forgot your names.
00:33Summer league season is upon us,
00:35but before we even get into that,
00:37let's start with the most pertinent information
00:40that we just got 24 hours ago.
00:43Jalen Brown talking to the media about
00:46why he feels as though he was left off of Team USA.
00:49Gary, you were there. Charade's already smiling.
00:52Let's get into it.
00:53He admitted he thinks that Nike is a reason
00:55why he wasn't selected to be a reserve for this team.
00:58So what do you two make of his comments?
01:00And just being bold enough to even say that to the public too.
01:03I'm going to let Gary carry the big weight on this,
01:06but I just want to say one thing.
01:07I am glad, I am glad that Jalen Brown,
01:11in his own low-key but very real way,
01:14pointed out he's got, and Gary knows where I'm going with this,
01:18he's got his own sucker list.
01:20Fellas that are on that list,
01:22that he is going to be looking at very closely once the season starts.
01:27Talked about motivation and all that.
01:30I'm feeling that energy, Jalen.
01:32I am so feeling that energy.
01:35Gary, I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
01:37Because you opened that sucker's list door with your question
01:41during the interview, Charade.
01:45Yeah, I mean, he was there with,
01:48I don't know how to pronounce her first name.
01:51Kisra, Kaisri, Gonjazek?
01:54Kaiser.
01:56Kaiser.
01:57Okay, like the hospital.
01:59It's okay.
02:00Kaiser, Gonjazek, and then Angel.
02:02WNBA player.
02:03So that was kind of, you know, mad, kind of random.
02:07I know that Gonjazek and Reese used to be kind of teammates for a minute
02:11with the Sky.
02:12She got away from the Sky like about a month ago or something.
02:15It was around the time when she was on the floor with Jalen Brown.
02:21Yeah, right before then, I think, yeah.
02:24So she got waved.
02:27But, you know, now she's winning with Jalen, apparently.
02:30She's doing all right.
02:32Angel Reese was there.
02:36Angel Reese, the Chicago Sky, playing the Las Vegas Aces tonight.
02:41So that's a big game right before the All-Star break.
02:44So Jalen gladly talked to us.
02:47He seemed to be in good spirits.
02:49He had an NBA Finals cap on, the Celtics with the Celtics logo.
02:54Like, he was chilling.
02:56And he just basically told us that he, you know,
02:58he wanted to I think make clear evidently, obviously,
03:01that he was good with Derek White.
03:04It was not an issue with Derek White making the team.
03:07He said he called Derek.
03:08He let him know he loved him, that he was happy for him,
03:11and he's happy for the rest of the guys who made Team USA.
03:14But he does feel slighted.
03:16He does feel Nike has something to do with him not being included on the team,
03:21regardless of the reasons you can come up with, with, oh, well,
03:25you know, they need more guards and all.
03:28You know, I mean, you know,
03:30I just think I've seen some people try to explain this basketball-wise,
03:34and it just doesn't make sense.
03:36It just doesn't.
03:38Like I said, I think Derek White's a great player,
03:40and he should be on the team also.
03:42But for Jalen not to even get a sniff of this,
03:46is something that I think is very political,
03:49and I think it's very intentional.
03:51And I think Jalen agrees.
03:52But he said he sounded optimistic, happy about the season coming up.
03:57Sounds like he's still kind of in celebratory mode a little bit,
04:00but he knows the team's going to have to get down to business,
04:03obviously, in the next couple of weeks,
04:05starting to prepare for off-season workouts
04:07and starting to get back and ramping up in that shape.
04:10Obviously, I think their training camp starts in about two months,
04:14a little bit more than that,
04:15because they go start the season early with those two games in Abu Dhabi.
04:21I'll butcher that to the Emirates, United Emirates with the Nuggets.
04:26So he seemed in good spirits,
04:28but he definitely wanted to know, A, that he does think Nike has something to do with it,
04:32and B, he's really good with Derek White,
04:34and he has no animosity toward this decision.
04:37I think he has more animosity toward just the process.
04:43And that makes sense,
04:44but it doesn't in any way, shape, or form explain
04:49or give you some sense of why he didn't make it clear from the very beginning
04:53that he was cool with Derek.
04:55I mean, that was really the issue that most people had with Jalen's gripe.
04:59I mean, I think most people would agree that Jalen should be on that team.
05:03When you start looking at the guys on that squad
05:05and you start looking at the body of work that Jalen Brown has put together,
05:09not just this year, but really the last couple of years,
05:12he really should have been on that team and it shouldn't have been an issue.
05:15But for you to not be in a team,
05:18and then for the spot that would have, in theory, gone to you,
05:21going to one of your teammates,
05:22for you not to be vocally supportive of them from the very minute they got that spot,
05:27that's where the problems arose.
05:29I mean, I'm curious to hear Jalen speak more about just the Nike role,
05:34because he sounds like he got some receipts.
05:35I mean, you listen to the way he talked,
05:38the rest of the story will come out.
05:40You better come with some receipts if you're talking like that,
05:44because we all have seen, historically, not just this team,
05:49but Team USA basketball has been, to some degree, political.
05:53I mean, you're telling me you're going to put together a dream team,
05:56but you don't got Isaiah Thomas on it?
05:58Come on now.
05:59I mean, you start looking at it, and there was some undeniable politics going on there.
06:05So Jalen's point is it's a legitimate one, and it's one that we've seen before,
06:10but I'm hoping that as he talks more about this
06:13and really tries to clear the air and squash this once and for all,
06:16that he brings some receipts to the conversation so that we can say,
06:19oh, Nike did what?
06:21They said this.
06:22You got that receipt?
06:23Okay.
06:24That's the kind of stuff that Jalen needs to do if he really wants this thing to,
06:28one, be squashed, and, or, two,
06:31bring about some substantive and significant changes to the process,
06:35because as you pointed out, Gary,
06:37that is the one thing that as I listen to Jalen talk more and more about this,
06:40it seems that's the issue, that there is a protocol that goes down when these teams are selected,
06:46that there's a high level that lacks transparency, that there are elements.
06:52Like there's not even a real tryout.
06:54I mean, I think back to, you know, like years ago when Dan Marley made the Olympic team.
07:00He only made that team because they had tryouts, and he busts everybody's ass.
07:04I mean, there was no way some kid from central Michigan was going to make the damn Olympic team
07:09unless he was balling out, and that's what he did.
07:12And you would hope that at some point maybe Team USA would get back to its roots
07:17and actually have true and fair competition for these spots.
07:20And if you made the team the previous four years,
07:23then maybe you have a select number of guys that get it automatically.
07:27It feels like there should be some level of tryouts for this thing
07:32and not just guys automatically, you know, ordained as,
07:36you're going to be an Olympian, and you're going to be an Olympian, and you will not be an Olympian
07:40even though you got NBA finals and, you know, Eastern Conference final.
07:44And until like two, three weeks ago, you were the highest paid dude in the NBA.
07:50So anyway, I feel, Jalen, I just wish you to talk more about Derek White on the front end
07:54and just kind of made that a non-story because it was a story for a minute there.
07:58I think anyone that follows the Celtics, though, understands that he has a level of respect
08:03for all of his teammates where it was never about them.
08:06It was more so about Nike.
08:08But to your point, it will always be a story just because it is still controversial.
08:12But to your point, he needs to pull those receipts out because we would all love to, I'm sure, read them.
08:18But let's get into Summer League.
08:21The Celtics taking on their favorite rival, the Lakers.
08:25Of course, still Summer League rosters, not really that rivalry.
08:28But the Celtics win.
08:30Ronnie struggles, but we'll focus on the Celtics first.
08:33Keita, 22 points, eight rebounds.
08:35Drew Peterson, 12 points, five rebounds, three assists.
08:38JD Davidson, 9.7 assists, three rebounds, four turnovers.
08:42But let's start with Keita first.
08:44What did you guys make of his performance in that game versus L.A.?
08:47And do you think he's ready to be in the rotation for the Celtics right now?
08:52I like what I saw out of Keita.
08:54But, you know, you have to look at everything that players do in Summer League with an asterisk.
09:00Like, this was a really good game, asterisk, but he did it against Summer League competition.
09:04But the thing I like about Keita at this point is just he's been consistent.
09:10I mean, that's one of the things that if you're the best player in Summer League on your team,
09:14you should consistently be that guy.
09:16You should be consistently the one player that no matter who you're playing,
09:20you're going to win your matchup.
09:24And he's done that.
09:25And the Celtics, they've invested in this guy.
09:28This is someone that they certainly plan to continue to develop going forward.
09:32And with Kristoff's presumptuous injury, there's going to be an opportunity for Keita to get on the floor sooner rather than later.
09:38But it's not going to be easy.
09:39I mean, Lou Cornett is the heir apparent, you know, to playing minutes as a backup.
09:44And Xavier Tillman, people forget Xavier Tillman was a starter on a playoff team before he came to Boston.
09:49So it's not like, you know, and this will be his first full training camp with the Celtics.
09:53So it's going to be really interesting to see how Keita fits into that mix.
09:57But I do think that as the season wears on, I think he's going to carve out a decent role of some sort for them,
10:02either as a kind of back of the rotation type of guy or a situational player who will come in for certain matchups,
10:09like if you're playing, I don't know, the Sixers and you got Joel and you need as many big men in six files as you can.
10:15He may be a situational guy that they'll look to to get some minutes from in various very specific matchups.
10:22Yeah, I thought he I thought Keita played a lot better than the opener.
10:26He struggled with Miami's goal where I thought it was a little discouraging
10:31because where's a rookie on his first NBA action during the summer?
10:36And he kind of got the best of Keita.
10:38I felt I thought Keita really responded in game two against, you know, not great competition.
10:45Colin Castleton from the Lakers, the guys on another guys on a two way contract.
10:49But he was obviously the best big on the floor.
10:54He got some blocked shots, man.
10:56The paint got rebounds, scored at the rim and a couple of free throws, even got a technical bar with a call.
11:02But showing that fire, it's good.
11:04I mean, you know, he's in his fourth year now.
11:06He needs to be the best, one of the best bigs on the floor every time he hits the floor in summer league.
11:12So I was impressed with his bounce back after that game one.
11:15We'll see what happens in the rest of camp.
11:18I'm sorry, the summer league, you know, they got three more games left.
11:21But I was impressed.
11:23Now, you know, I think Keita brings something different than Cornette.
11:26You know, he's more of an enforcer, probably a better rebounder.
11:30But Cornette does things like better, like screening, defensive position, things like that.
11:36Keita also has a bad habit of getting in foul trouble and also too many goaltends.
11:43You know, he's really jumping like can't block everything, man.
11:46Just sometimes you got to let it go.
11:48You can't go for the, you know, that Bill Russell look.
11:52Sometimes you got to just be yourself and quit trying to swat everything away.
11:56So I think there's some steps there that he'll have to take in order to get more minutes.
12:03But I thought obviously, you know, one game, but it was a good stepping stone for him to get to that next level
12:09because you want him, one, to be an enforcer, two, to rebound and score at the rim,
12:14and three, avoid foul trouble, avoid getting bad fouls or being out of position on defense
12:21and become like a better pick and roll and screener.
12:23So those are the things I think that they're looking at, and I think he's making progress.
12:30All right, Drew Peterson, what do you make of his performance in the G League?
12:36Do you think he has an opportunity to make it to a league roster?
12:40Also, how would you differentiate him from Sam Housen?
12:44What you got, Gary?
12:48I mean, I think it's easy associating because both are white and they shoot three,
12:52but they're both different players.
12:55Come on, Gary.
12:56I'm just saying.
12:58Why we got to talk about Sam and bring up Drew Peterson?
13:01No, but Peterson, I was just going to say.
13:04The rundown does say is he's Sam Housen 2.0, but I felt like that was a little too much of a stretch.
13:08Yeah, that's a lot.
13:09I said I think for Peterson and guys like Shireman, the whole thing is getting ready for 25-26.
13:16That's what your goal should be because I don't think with Houser next year, he's under contract,
13:22he's going to play, he's going to get minutes.
13:24I don't think there's much of an opportunity for Peterson or Shireman in terms of getting significant minutes.
13:31But it's likely that if Houser continues his ascension, plays well, knocks down threes,
13:40becomes a better defender as he has been, he's going to get an offer that he probably can't match.
13:47He's going to get that four-year $80 million or four-year $72 million offer.
13:53So it's going to say, hey, see you later, man.
13:55We can't afford it.
13:56We're in the second apron.
13:57So if you're Shireman or Drew, Peterson, you're banking for 25-26 to be able to step in
14:06and be that guy who can knock down threes, play some defense, play that swingman position.
14:10So I think those two are going to kind of compete here.
14:13But I was impressed with Peterson.
14:15I didn't think it was much of a factor in the opening game.
14:18I thought this game against the Lakers, it was very much a factor, hit a couple of threes,
14:23key down the stretch when the Lakers are trying to creep back into the game.
14:26Peterson quieted the crowd because it was a pro-Laker crowd.
14:29So I was impressed with what he was able to do.
14:32But his whole thing is spend another year maybe mostly in the G League on the two-way,
14:38knock down threes, improve your defense, and then next year when obviously Hauser is gone,
14:45attempt to slide in and get some quality minutes.
14:53Yeah, I mean, I think he's definitely positioning himself to be the heir apparent to Sam Hauser
14:58as far as a guy that can knock down shots off that bench.
15:01And that's what he does well.
15:03But the one thing that I'll say that he still has, I think, a little ways to go is that
15:07he's not as put together physically as Sam Hauser is.
15:11I mean, Sam is not some little shooting guard out there.
15:14Sam's got good size.
15:16That allows him to defend a guy like Luka Doncic and not get bumped seven rows back
15:21the way a lot of guards do when they have to defend Luka who's really strong.
15:25So the big thing with Peterson, he's just got to get physically stronger.
15:29And I think he has to become able to impact the game or be a net zero player defensively.
15:37Because if he's basically giving you solid defense but not spectacular,
15:41he's not getting crushed or killed or anything like that,
15:43and he's able to knock down shots, that is an ideal perfect storm.
15:48Whereas right now, you look at where Sam Hauser's game is.
15:51I mean, yes, he's still a knockdown shooter.
15:54And yes, defensively he's made improvements.
15:56But he's also expanded his offensive game.
15:59You saw in the finals, Sam took some shots.
16:01I don't know if he would have taken those same shots four or five months earlier.
16:04And that is pump fake on the three, dribble drive, two steps, pull up, shoot the midrange.
16:09That's a shot that he started shooting in the finals that we had not seen much of prior to that.
16:15If he starts, if Peterson is looking to really kind of make his mark
16:21and be the heir apparent to Sam Hauser, he's going to have to do more than just be a three-point shooter.
16:25Because that is really how Sam has become more than just a guy that they look to knock down shots.
16:31They look for Sam to be a presence out there.
16:33And that presence doesn't always have to be him making and taking three-point shots.
16:38At this point, that's pretty much all you're going to get out of Peterson.
16:41And for him to make that next step and gain the confidence of Joe Mazula,
16:47he's going to have to become more than just a spot-up three-point shooter.
16:51It's summertime, and there's no better way to spend it than at the ballpark.
16:55Popcorn, soda, hot dogs. Mmm, I'm starting to get hungry just thinking about it.

18:31All right, the other son, J.D. Davidson.
18:34I cracked myself up.
18:39I wish I didn't get that.
18:41I wish I didn't get that.
18:42I wish I didn't, but I didn't.
18:44You know, it's easier than that.
18:46All right, Peter's son, David's son, Peter's son, David's son.
18:52When you have to explain it, it's not funny anymore.
18:55Corny, that's what happens when you have institutional ACC knowledge and you just got invited to the party and bringing napkins.
19:03You're not really bringing food. You're not really bringing drink. You're just bringing napkins.
19:08But it's okay, Cal. It's okay. You'll catch on quick enough.
19:12We definitely need to tailgate FEC together this year.
19:15For sure.
19:17For sure.
19:19Continue on your well-placed dad joke, Corny.
19:24Continue.
19:25Thank you. So, J.D. Davidson, what exactly do you two think he's missing?
19:29And do you think he'll find it in time to help out Boston or the time passing?
19:35You know, I watched him really closely in this last game against the Lakers.
19:41And I think the one thing that I think bugs me, and I think it probably bugs the Celtics, too, about J.D., that he's still a work in progress.
19:51And that is clock and time recognition.
19:54There are at least three possessions where he just basically milked the damn shot clock down by just dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble.
20:01Not passing, not really getting any motion going, not looking for anything other than just dribble, dribble, dribble.
20:07And with that being said, there were times where he would make a move and have the defender off balance, and then he'd just stop.
20:16He'd like stop and reset, like as if it's a video game where if I could just kind of tweak your ankles a little bit, I'd get 10 points.
20:23No, you get points when you force them to move like they don't want to move and you finish at the rim.
20:30I thought there were at least four or five opportunities where he had his man in a very vulnerable position so that he could get to the basket and finish.
20:37And he decided not to.
20:39His recognition of how to be a point guard is still something that I don't have a good feel for.
20:44Now, his shot making, it looks a lot better.
20:47It looks a lot better in the summer than I thought it looked last year.
20:50But he's still, again, his on-the-floor recognition is still, I think, a work in progress.
20:56And if you're the Celtics, that's kind of the one thing you need to get right.
21:01You need to be able to be on the floor and they have to have confidence that you are going to make the right basketball decision.
21:07And that's the biggest concern that I have with J.D. now.
21:10I don't think he makes enough of the right basketball decisions.
21:13Throwing a lob of Decatur is not a great basketball decision because, guess what?
21:18He's a seven-footer and there's no one else on the opposing team who can play above the rim like him.
21:23So it's a pretty easy play to make.
21:26And, you know, it's one of the few times Brian E. James actually did something that you could kind of clap your hands about,
21:33where he broke up one of those lobs even after J.D. had like three, four assists.
21:39But Brian E. figured out by the fifth time, maybe I should do something about this.
21:42Yeah.
21:43But, you know, the bottom line, J.D. has to, I think, just get a better sense and awareness of what he needs to do when he's out there on the floor.
21:51Yeah, I was impressed with J.D. He's starting to shoot the ball better.
21:58I definitely like his three-point shot going down.
22:01Like you said, Sharon, he probably needs to improve his on-court decisions.
22:05But I think he's playing more poised.
22:07And what you wanted to see in this summer league from J.D. Davis is like, hey, man, you know, this is your third summer league, bro.
22:13You need to act like you've been here before.
22:15And you need to be the best dude on the floor.
22:18And to me, that's what I see.
22:21You know, he's playing well. He's playing with poise.
22:25You know, he's running the offense.
22:27He's not afraid to attack the basket for that layup or shot off the glass.
22:32He's hitting the three-point shot.
22:34I think that's one of the bigger concerns is like he shot 26 percent last year on a three from in the G League.
22:40Like he's got to boost that up, especially in an organization that values a three-point shot.
22:44So I think he's taking steps forward.
22:47I was impressed with what he did over the last two games.
22:51He's had a pretty good start so far.
22:53We'll see if, you know, maybe they hold out some guys eventually in these five games or he'll play those five games.
23:00But we'll see how he does.
23:01He'll play Charlotte on Wednesday, how that goes and whether he can just pick up that momentum
23:06and take it into the season where he can really show something in training camp where they know,
23:12OK, if we need somebody, we can give that dude a call.
23:15Because what you want, you know, with a two-way contract, you can play in 50 like Cato last year.
23:20You can play in 50 regular season games.
23:22So you can be a useful asset even on a two-way contract.
23:26So from J.D. Davidson, I'm looking for an opportunity to play and play, you know,
23:34be up with the big club in a week at a time or so, show them something to where I can be a real asset.
23:40And I think he's showing signs of doing that, taking that, you know, first two or three steps now in summary.
23:50All right, let's talk about the person who everyone was so focused on despite the win being for Boston,
23:57Bronny James, LeBron's son, obviously, two points, three rebounds in that loss.
24:03I want to hear your impressions.
24:06Gary, go ahead. Talk about your boy, Bronny.
24:11I mean, somebody, and this isn't funny, but somebody was like.
24:18It's going to be funny.
24:19No, it's not supposed to be funny.
24:22Somebody was just like, he's out there like a Make-A-Wish kid.
24:25Like it's to the point where.
24:27Damn, damn, damn, damn.
24:33Nothing against the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
24:35It's just that kid that you're really rooting for to just score a bucket.
24:39It's like when they put the little guy on the court and he's like, hey, shoot a basket.
24:44And it's pathetic.
24:46And that's how it was.
24:48It was like every time he shot the ball, it was like, go, Bronny, come on, Bronny.
24:53Like the crowd, it's to the point of like, OK, he's an NBA player.
24:58They're like, oh, we just hope he scores a basket.
25:01Hey, Bronny.
25:03He hit a 15-, 16-foot jumper, and the crowd went nuts in the fourth quarter.
25:08They were down by like 10 or 12 points.
25:10They got him back within 10, and the crowd got real hyped.
25:13Like, OK, they're like, oh, Bronny scored.
25:15Shoot, we're really about to make a run now.
25:18And it's like he airballed two threes.
25:20He's passing up shots.
25:23He just looks completely lost out there.
25:25It's like throwing like a pretty good.
25:28I ain't talking about no Cooper flag or nothing.
25:31I'm talking about like a pretty good high school player into an NBA game.
25:37That's how it's like.
25:38Like it just looks completely lost.
25:41And it's sad because it did not have to be this way.
25:44You know, 0 for 15 from the three-point line since he's been in summer league.
25:49He's not hitting shots.
25:51He's not scoring.
25:52He's not doing much.
25:53Like literally the crowd cheered when he made a deflection.
25:56That playoff J.D. Davidson.
25:59The crowd started cheering for a deflection.
26:02It wasn't like a turnover.
26:05Like the ball went out of bounds when he deflected it, so it was still a ball.
26:09And there's a crowd, yeah, yeah, Bronny, see him up.
26:13You know, like it's to the point where he's become a sympathetic figure.
26:18Like the crowd is just hoping for him to score, and he scored two points.
26:22I mean, and this is the level.
26:25These are his peers.
26:28Now, not all of them.
26:29There's guys, many guys in summer league who are older than him,
26:32more experienced, all that.
26:34Guys who have been in their second, third summer league.
26:37But if you're trying to make an NBA roster, you need to show something.
26:42And you can tell the guys that are kind of lost out there that are like,
26:46okay, they're going to need G League time or maybe time overseas,
26:52get some hair on their chest a little bit, theoretically,
26:56and then come back maybe next summer league and try to make a roster.
26:59And for Bronny, I don't think, I mean, I think he's like our friend,
27:04Sherrod's favorite guy, Bruno Cabloco.
27:07Our friend Bruno.
27:11The guy that was two years away from being two years away.
27:14Exactly.
27:15When he got drafted like seven, eight, nine years ago,
27:20the former coach, Fran Foschilla,
27:23who was kind of like the international hoop expert, was like, yeah,
27:26he's two years away from being two years away.
27:29And that's what Bronny is right now.
27:32He is.
27:33That's the first line in his Wikipedia page too, actually.
27:36Yes.
27:37When it comes up.
27:38That line stuck to him.
27:40It was the greatest line.
27:44And, you know, it was like, what the hell is this kid doing?
27:47Entering the draft.
27:49And he played a little, he had bounced around.
27:52He's on the Brazil team.
27:53They didn't make the, I don't, Brazil did make the Olympics.
27:57So he'll be in, he'll be in.
28:00Yeah.
28:01I think our friend Bruno is balling and he's, you know,
28:07he was in a Celtic system for a hot minute.
28:09But with Bronny,
28:12it just looks like he's two years away from being two years away.
28:16And it's sad because it does not have to be this way.
28:20He should have his ass in college.
28:21He should be enjoying that college life.
28:25It's okay to take two to three years of college before you go to the league.
28:29You don't have to rush it.
28:31It's, you know, any kid is going to say, oh, I want to play in the NBA.
28:35As a father, I think it's your responsibility to go, no, son,
28:38you're not ready.
28:39I think the thing that we don't do sometimes, and I'm not a parent,
28:44but I have, you know, people, young people I know,
28:47you don't assess the children.
28:49We tell them that they can do anything they want to do and we support them,
28:53which is great.
28:54But sometimes you got to have a conversation and go, okay, my son,
28:57my daughter is not good at this.
28:59And I, you know, I'm not,
29:01I'm not going to send my son or daughter to Harvard with a 2.8 GPA.
29:07Like that's great to say that you went to Harvard,
29:10but you're going to come right back home and drop out.
29:12Like you've got to assess accurately and assess your child.
29:16Like look at your son play at USC and go, okay, my son is not ready yet.
29:24And I know I want to play with him and it's a great story,
29:28but I'm not going to fast track him to the league when he's completely not
29:31ready.
29:32So he can be undressed so he can be embarrassed.
29:35So people talk to him on morning shows and say that he's not ready and say
29:39he looks terrible.
29:40Like that's just the kid's 19.
29:42And like he has to take that now.
29:45Then he turns around and wins.
29:47What's that video game?
29:48The call of duty, which is what I was going to bring up.
29:51He wins $10,000.
29:53He beats Graham Williams in this tournament.
29:56And the first thing I thought about when I saw that video, I don't know.
29:59This was like my time, but high school musical.
30:02Do you guys know the premise of the movie?
30:04Okay.
30:05So high school musical is about Ashley.
30:07I think he played football.
30:08He was a football player.
30:09He's a quarterback.
30:10He loves singing.
30:12He was really good at singing and wanted to do musicals.
30:15And so he ends up doing it.
30:17But like the first thing I thought about was like,
30:19not that video games is Ronnie's calling,
30:22but it was giving like, you're really good at this one thing.
30:25And you just happen to be doing another thing.
30:28And it's like, if this isn't his passion to your point too,
30:31then there's no need to force it for the sake of historical records and
30:35saying you played with your son.
30:37Like if this isn't his passion, he doesn't have to do it.
30:40It feels like it's daddy's dream.
30:42I think so.
30:43Wait, this is not Shiraz.
30:46Wait for your time.
30:48It's way before my time.
30:49He made that clear.
30:50It's before my time.
30:51So this is like his era.
30:52So there was a great all-time great heavyweight boxer named Joe Frazier.
30:56Okay.
30:57He fought Ali.
30:58Okay.
31:00You know, Joe Frazier is.
31:01He actually came to NABJ in 2011.
31:06In Philly before he passed away, he had a son named Marvis.
31:11And Marvis was big like him.
31:13And he pushed Marvis into being a heavyweight box.
31:17And Marvis fought.
31:20And I think it was Mike Tyson.
31:21And you want to know what happened?
31:24You want to know what happened?
31:26I think in that fight.
31:28You want to know what happened?
31:29I think in that fight.
31:30Did he die?
31:32Mike Tyson knocked him to bleep out.
31:35And Joe.
31:37I got scared.
31:38No, no, no.
31:39No, no, no.
31:41Marvis is still alive.
31:42It was quick.
31:43It was a quick fight.
31:45He knocked him to bleep out.
31:48And Joe, as you can see at the end of the fight, it was a TKO.
31:53And Joe hugged his son like, I'm sorry.
31:57It was one of the more set.
31:59There's just sports moments that touch you.
32:03Like we always talk about that Olympic moment where the runner tore his hamstring.
32:08And his father runs onto the track and holds him and carries him to the finish line.
32:13It was like, oh, my God.
32:14Like a tearjerker.
32:16But you could see Joe because Joe was his trainer.
32:20And he got knocked out.
32:24And you could see Joe Frazier hugging his son like, son, I'm sorry.
32:28Like, this was my dream.
32:30Like, this ain't you.
32:31Like, I'm sorry.
32:32And it ended up, you know, he was a contender.
32:35But he never.
32:36He was okay.
32:37You know?
32:38And it wasn't.
32:40And Joe just, I want my son to be champ just like I was.
32:43I want my son to be champ.
32:45And that wasn't Marvis' path.
32:47And I just feel like this is LeBron's dream.
32:52And now LeBron's in, you know, overseas with Team USA.
32:57His mom was at the game last night, Savannah.
32:59But this kid is on his own.
33:02And Rich Paul, oh, yeah, my son only going to play for a major contract.
33:07No two ways.
33:09Yeah, or we're going to send him to Australia.
33:12They're returning to send him overseas, right?
33:14Yeah, if the wrong team drafts him, he'll go to Australia.
33:19Like, he got all that game.
33:21And we're looking at him like, what's this kid?
33:26What does he do well?
33:27What are we looking for here?
33:30And it's sad.
33:31And I feel bad for Bronny.
33:33And I'm sure financially he'll be fine.
33:35He'll make no money.
33:36Right.
33:37He's the one that's at the game on top of it.
33:39Some of these dudes out there, Sherrod, Bronny,
33:42they're trying to put food on their table.
33:43That's why they came to the league.
33:45They're fighting for.
33:47They're trying to bring their mama out of the hood or their brothers.
33:50They're trying to pay for college.
33:51They're here for a purpose.
33:54Not just because I want to be a pro like my dad.
33:57No.
33:58If you're not good enough.
34:00And I just think it's that Joe Frazier, Marvis Frazier.
34:03I can just see.
34:04And I just remember that fight.
34:06And then Marvis slumped over and got his butt beat.
34:11And Joe just hugged him.
34:12Like, I'm sorry.
34:13Like, damn it.
34:14Like, you know, this wasn't you.
34:18And maybe that call to duty example where he's like, he doesn't.
34:21Maybe he's just a gamer.
34:23Maybe that's what he does.
34:24You know what I mean?
34:26You know, I'm not big on gaming.
34:27You know, when I was a kid, you know, we all.
34:30Video games did exist when I was a kid.
34:32Me and Sherrod was young, but it wasn't like we could do it professionally.
34:36It was just like, when you got to a certain age, you'd like, you stop playing.
34:40Like, you, your ass too big for that.
34:42NBA 2K league.
34:45Like, if your daddy came home, he was 24 playing, like playing Madden.
34:50What the hell is wrong with you?
34:53Get your ass out there.
34:55It was like, like all of our dads.
34:58Like most of our dad, like you, you know, like John Witherspoon was on Friday.
35:02Like, you know, like that was, that was the black American dad.
35:06What the hell are you doing?
35:08Playing a video game.
35:09Get your ass a job, boy.
35:10What the hell are you doing?
35:11Get out of my house.
35:12Like, you couldn't be, you couldn't be a gamer.
35:15What's a gamer?
35:17How much a gamer pays?
35:19How much rent can a gamer pay rent?
35:24How much food on the table can a gamer?
35:26Like now, it's possible, right?
35:28So maybe.
35:29Now it is very possible.
35:31Back then, it was not, that was not, that was not a career option.
35:35To play video games was not.
35:38If your dad walked in and you with your homeboys during working hours,
35:43and he just got home, and you playing semifinals of Madden.
35:47Like, that's tripping.
35:50So, I just think maybe there's something there.
35:54And I hope this turns out to where eventually he'll be a pro
35:59and maybe contribute to an NBA team.
36:02But there's no time soon.
36:04I mean, I was sitting next to Dan Wilkie in the LA Times last night,
36:08and he was just like, we were both looking at like the air ball two threes.
36:13He was open.
36:14Like, get him, you know, in the crowd.
36:16Come on, Bronny.
36:18It was like the little boy or the little girl or whatever, you know,
36:23in the sport that you just, they're the smallest one on the court.
36:27And you're like, come on, get it, you know, get it, get it.
36:31Oh, my God, you know.
36:33That's what it was.
36:35But this is summer league, man.
36:37This is summer league.
36:38They're supposed to be like that?
36:39They're supposed to be making which foundation?
36:41It's not.
36:43It's sad.
36:45Yeah.
36:46Either way.
36:47Go ahead, LeBron.
36:48I mean, go ahead.
36:49Go ahead, LeBron.
36:50Go ahead.
36:51Go ahead, Sherrod.
36:53Go ahead, Sherrod.
36:54You're a dad.
36:55You should know.
36:56I do know.
36:59Very accomplished.
37:01Sherrod didn't push him.
37:03He didn't.
37:04Joe Frazier, his son, he gave him the proper steps,
37:08let his son take whatever path he wanted.
37:11Very successful.
37:12Very proud of Isaiah.
37:14You know, he looks a little like you, which is unfortunate, you know.
37:18I'm crying.
37:20Oh, my gosh.
37:21Wow.
37:22He still resembles you, but, you know, he may grow out of that.
37:25You know, but I'm very proud of Isaiah.
37:29He took the proper steps, got his degree, did things on his own.
37:33I remember just the whole process and used us as mentors and advisors.
37:37He was networking as if he didn't have a family member immediately.
37:40No.
37:41He was not dropping daddy's name.
37:44He was not coming in.
37:45You know where my daddy is, right?
37:47Maybe.
37:48Yeah.
37:49You know, he, you know, he did it the right way.
37:55And I just feel like LeBron is just, and then LeBron ain't even here to,
37:59LeBron's doing his still balling for team.
38:02So there's Bronnie, you know, with his mom there.
38:05And I'm sure his peoples or whatever, family members.
38:08But I hope, I just wish him,
38:10I hope emotionally this doesn't get to him and I wish him all the best,
38:14but this ain't right.
38:15But that, but, and Gary, I mean, that last point,
38:18that that's really my whole point in all of this, that this,
38:21this kid from this kid is going to be emotionally scarred in ways that we have
38:25no idea how deep is going to be or how deep it already is.
38:29I mean, he's been in this.
38:30Yeah.
38:31He's been in this major spotlight from day one.
38:34And it really it's you,
38:37there's no way that he can win this battle because you're trying to
38:40basically show that you are good enough to be in the conversation with your
38:47daddy, your daddy, who by the way, is easily one of the greatest to ever play the game.
38:51Many can make the argument is the greatest to ever play the game.
38:54So you're, you're not going to be your daddy.
38:56You're not going to be as good as your daddy.
38:57But the thing that I worry most about Bronnie is that because he has elected
39:04or he's been nudged in a direction to play this game,
39:07he is being forced to deal with a level of scrutiny and expectations that no one,
39:15whether you're the number one pick or the 55th pick should ever have to deal with.
39:18He, his game is going to be absolutely scrutinized on a level that no player taking with the 55th pick was ever going to see.
39:27Each one more than had his kind of attention when the Celtics took him at number 55 years ago.
39:32He carved out a hell of a career.
39:34He was in the league for at least 10, 11 years.
39:36If Ronnie can get past his first contract,
39:40I think that is that that's a major achievement because right now,
39:43and I was talking with a scout about this and I was asking him,
39:47who would you compare Bronnie to at this point?
39:51And he said to be perfectly candid with you.
39:54Have you ever heard of a walk on in the NBA?
39:58That's what Ronnie looks like to me.
40:00Like if you the way that people treat him, the way that he gets on the floor,
40:05the shortcomings of his game,
40:07those are the kind of things that when you look at a major college program and they bring in their favorite walk on,
40:12those are kind of things that they can't do.
40:15They show a little something that they got enough to be relatively coherent at the game.
40:19But in terms of being an impact player,
40:21in terms of being someone that is actually going to make plays and be a difference maker in terms of wins and losses,
40:27he ain't there yet.
40:29I mean, the way the crowd acted when he made a 15 foot jumper,
40:32you would have thought that was like game winner, game seven in the finals.
40:35It's a freaking joke.
40:37I mean, it's like one of the most basic fundamental plays of a basketball player.
40:41Not an NBA player, not a college player, but someone who can play basketball.
40:45There are seven year olds who feel very comfortable taking 15 foot jump shots.
40:50And when they knock them down, you don't hear the crowd go ballistic because it's a very basic play.
40:56And that's what he has been reduced to.
40:58He has been reduced to if you can just do basic plays,
41:01we're going to make your basic plays into something so much grander than a basic play because you are not basic.
41:07Even though at this point being basic might be an upgrade for him.
41:11Like I said, I'm at a point now where I don't even care so much about the basketball stuff around.
41:17I care more about just the emotional baggage slash scarring that this young man is going to have to deal with because it is only going to get worse.
41:28And being a young man that he is, he does what most young men in that situation do.
41:34And that's lean on the wisdom and guidance of those elders around you who, in my opinion, are letting him down.
41:40I think LeBron is letting him down. I think Rich Paul let him down.
41:43I think the Lakers have let him down because they put him in a position where anything less than really good is just not going to be acceptable.
41:54If he was even decent, if he was even scoring eight points, he's over 15 from three.
42:01He had two points. He is playing.
42:05If he was just like, well, he's not the best player on the floor, but he's doing okay.
42:12I think in the first couple of games when they played in San Francisco, people were like, well, first game I think he had six points.
42:21People were like, okay, your first NBA game, that's okay.
42:24Hey, you're a star out there, but that's not bad.
42:28You ain't make no headlines, nothing.
42:30You didn't do anything spectacular, but you didn't do anything bad.
42:33It's just gone progressively worse.
42:36I mean, that game, the first game in Vegas against Houston, like Reed Shepard was dropping buckets.
42:43And they're the same age, same high school class.
42:47And Reed Shepard looks like a damn pro.
42:50You can tell.
42:51We all have watched some of these games.
42:54You can look on the floor and go, okay, that dude's a pro.
42:56Yeah.
42:57Whether it'll be, you know, I'm looking at Cam Whitmore, who was like one and done last year.
43:03Like he's dominating down here.
43:05Now he's like a seventh man, eighth man for the Rockets.
43:08Kamehakes, like you can tell those are pros.
43:12Okay.
43:13They don't need to be here.
43:15But you were looking at LeBron, you're like, okay, show me something.
43:19And now it's to the point, like you said, it's like it's a sympathetic thing.
43:24It's not, as I said, it's like a kid in peewee baseball.
43:28When we got his first hit of the season or a walk on, like that scout was real active.
43:32He's like a walk on where he comes off into the bench.
43:35Oh, come on, Richie.
43:36You know, he works so hard and practices.
43:40He never gets into the game.
43:41Get a basket.
43:42Like that's what it was last night.
43:44Like he hit a 16-footer.
43:46Crowd erupted.
43:48And it's just like in the fourth quarter, it was his first basket.
43:51That's airballing.
43:54It was in the fourth quarter.
43:55The game was pretty much a wrap at that point.
43:57Yeah.
43:58And it was like he had two, he airballed two three-pointers.
44:03One wide open in the corner.
44:05Just, I mean, a foot short.
44:07And I think it's mental and it's skill set.
44:12I don't think he's that bad of a player, but I think it's in his head.
44:15I mean, who's there to have his back?
44:18LeBron is an out-of-body whatever with Team USA about to start his journey,
44:25his next chapter in his career.
44:28He's trying to win another gold medal.
44:30And you're leaving your 19-year-old son.
44:32He a grown man.
44:33I get it.
44:34He's grown officially.
44:35He's over 18.
44:36You know, in our generation, that's when you got, unless you was in college,
44:40that's when you got out of the house.
44:42It's not like that now.
44:44You can still be a gamer, I guess.
44:47But growing up when you got 18, your father, your mother,
44:54even your mother was like, okay, what's going to happen next year?
44:59If you don't go to college, you ain't kicking it here until you're 25.
45:04Like, you go to college and you come back home on the weekends
45:07and holidays and during the summer because you were so unproductive,
45:11or you get a full-time job and you bring some money to this house.
45:16But eventually you got to go.
45:19Like, that was kind of how it was.
45:21And as much as he's officially grown, he's old enough not to do certain things,
45:27but he's 18, voting age 19.
45:30He's old enough.
45:31He's a grown man.
45:32It's hard to imagine who's there for him.
45:36You know, who's consoling him?
45:38Maybe the Laker coaches.
45:40Maybe just make sure he's okay.
45:42That's it.
45:43Then he wins that video game contest, and it's like, you know,
45:46maybe you should be working on your game.
45:48Like, maybe that's what people are saying.
45:51You know, I root for the kid, and I hope he turns out okay.
45:57Yeah.
45:59Well, bringing it back to Boston quickly right before we wrap this up,
46:03you, Gary, published an article Tuesday morning about – you did.
46:09Well, someone published it.
46:10You did.
46:11It was a conversation with Joe Mazzulla.
46:12Let me – before you get all concerned about how he's prepared.
46:16By celebrating this championship, he's doing so by preparing for the next one.
46:20But, obviously, go read the article.
46:23But, Gary, how was that conversation, and what did you –
46:25what was your biggest takeaway from it?
46:28Great conversation with Joe Mazzulla.
46:32And he's just – he's a different guy, and I think we all know that.
46:36And he's just getting ready.
46:38Like, his whole thing is just, like, preparing
46:42and trying to get to that – now that next level.
46:47I think the championship is something to celebrate.
46:49And it was just the stuff on and off the court.
46:52Like, I need to spend more time with my younger son.
46:55You know, put some quality time in.
46:58And he thinks it's – like, things – like, he thought it –
47:00he thinks it's cool that the players, Deuce and Ian Horford,
47:06are around the team, right, around the team.
47:12He wants to be a family atmosphere.
47:14And he likes – and his oldest son, Michael, is kind of growing a personality.
47:22And he said, I want them to use this and my oldest to use this
47:25as a motivation to do something.
47:27They could be an NBA player.
47:28They could just be being a doctor.
47:30Use this championship as a reason to want to be great at something.
47:36And, you know, he is preparing, and he's, like, you know, trying to get ready.
47:41And he's motivated.
47:42And the thing of his people – or his – he said his cousin, Ronald,
47:50put a bunch of the Celtic paraphernalia on his father's grave.
47:55It was his father's grave tombstone.
47:58And I asked him, you know, it's mixed feelings.
48:02You might be like, you know, but he said he thought that was cool.
48:06He said that he thought that was great.
48:07He said his father was active.
48:10And interesting things, like he said, it took him years to – his dad died in 2020,
48:17and it took him years, four years to grieve.
48:20He said he didn't start grieving until, like, he took the Celtics job
48:24because he was so intense.
48:26And then he said the last few years his dad's voice has been in his head.
48:31What would he do?
48:32What would he say?
48:34What should I do now?
48:35Like, and he said he's had a chance to grieve his father's passing.
48:40And I thought that was very deep, very emotional.
48:43They talked about his faith and how important his faith is to him,
48:47that he felt like he was anointed to be here.
48:49He felt like last year was a challenge that God gave him.
48:52So there's a lot of things that he kind of opened up about.
48:58So please, if you read it, not only because I wrote it,
49:01but if you want to know more about Joe Mazzulla, the man,
49:04and what he's thinking at this point, read that article because he was very open
49:11and, you know, talked a lot about the things he's comfortable talking about.
49:18Good job, Gary.
49:19Yeah.
49:21Good job.
49:22And thanks for bringing the napkins to the ACC picnic.
49:24We appreciate that.
49:26Hey, you always need napkins.
49:29Well, anything else from you two before we wrap this up?
49:33You got it, point guard.
49:35Well, thank you.
49:37That's all for this week's episode of the Big 3 NBA Podcast
49:41as the Amtrak just makes all that noise.
49:45It's rolling out, Quanie.
49:46It's rolling out just like we're rolling out.
49:48It's rolling out for HR, Blakely, and Gary Wasserman.
49:51I'm Quanie Lunitz.
49:52Thank you for listening.
