00:00Thomas the Tank Engine was feeling bright and cheerful. It was a splendid day.
00:07Good morning, he whistled to some cows, but the cows didn't reply.
00:11Never mind, said Thomas, they're busy with their breakfast.
00:16Next, he saw Bertie.
00:19Hello, Bertie.
00:22But all Bertie could say was,
00:24Ouch! That's another hole in the road.
00:26I'm sorry, Bertie, smiled Thomas.
00:31Thomas was still in good spirits when Bertie arrived at the next station.
00:38Bad luck, Bertie.
00:40Now, if you were a steam engine, you would run on a pair of reliable rails.
00:44Huh, replied Bertie.
00:46The railway was supposed to deliver tar to mend the road two weeks ago.
00:50You can't trust a thing that runs on rails.
00:53I run on rails? You can trust me, Bertie?
00:56I'll see if I can find out what's happened.
00:59Thomas left Bertie and made his way along the branch line towards the fixed station by the sea.
01:09James was snorting about in the yard.
01:12It's too bad, he grumbled.
01:14Percy goes to work at the harbour and I do his job.
01:17Here, there and everywhere.
01:21Take that!
01:23Just you wait, we'll show you.
01:26Gordon laughed.
01:27I'll tell you what, James.
01:29If you pretend to be ill everywhere, you couldn't shunt trucks here or go to the quarry there, could you?
01:35What a good idea, agreed James.
01:38Look, here comes Thomas. I'll start pretending now.
01:42Thomas was sorry to see the engines looking miserable.
01:45Cheer up, he puffed. It's a beautiful day.
01:48Yes, grumbled Gordon, but not for James.
01:51What's the matter? asked Thomas.
01:53He's sick, replied Gordon.
01:55Yes, he is. I mean, I am, stuttered James.
01:59I don't feel well at all.
02:01Don't worry, said Thomas kindly. I'll help out if you're ill.
02:07Gordon and James sniggered quietly to each other.
02:11Some of James's trucks were coupled behind Thomas and he steamed away to the quarry.
02:17The trucks were still crossed.
02:19We couldn't pay James back for bumping us, so we'll play tricks on Thomas instead.
02:23One engine is as good as another.
02:25But Thomas didn't hear them.
02:27He collected all the stone from the quarry and set off back to the junction.
02:41Danger lay ahead.
02:43Now for our plan, giggled the trucks.
02:45Go faster, go faster.
02:47Slow down, called Thomas's driver and applied the brakes.
02:59Poor Thomas stood dazed and surprised in a muddy pond.
03:05As a toad eyed him suspiciously.
03:08Bust my buffers, muttered Thomas.
03:11The day started so well too.
03:15Duck pulled away the trucks.
03:20And Edward helped Thomas back to the junction.
03:24Suddenly, Thomas remembered the missing tar.
03:27He told Edward all about it.
03:30That's strange, said Edward.
03:32A truck full of tar has been left at my station.
03:35That must be it.
03:37Driver will make sure it gets to Bertie now.
03:41Later, James spoke to Thomas.
03:44I'm sorry about your accident, he muttered.
03:47And so is Gordon.
03:49We didn't mean to get you into trouble.
03:52No, indeed, spluttered Gordon.
03:54A mere misunderstanding, Thomas.
03:56All's well that ends well.
03:58Bertie arrived.
04:00He looked much more cheerful.
04:02My road's being mended now.
04:04Oh, I am glad, replied Thomas.
04:08Thanks for all you did.
04:10Now I know I can trust an engine,
04:12especially if his name is Thomas.
04:14Gordon and James puffed silently away to the shed.
04:18But Thomas still had company.
04:22What a day for surprises.
04:24The toad, who was looking forward to a ride home,
04:27noisily agreed.
