00:00The decision to not vacate the seats of the six former Bersatu members has weakened the
00:06anti-hopping law and could lead to a repeat of the Sheraton move, a reform group warned.
00:13The Sheraton move in 2020 saw Barisan Nasional, Bersatu, PAS and a faction led by PKR's then
00:19Deputy President Azmin Ali joining forces to topple the PH government.
00:24Project Sama also said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul's decision not to have the Labuan
00:29MP vacate the seat on grounds that Suhaili Abdul Rahman had a pending court case over
00:35his Bersatu membership opened up a loophole others could exploit.
00:40The group pointed out that the opposition might return the favour by luring government
00:44MPs to their side to weaken or topple Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration.
00:50It also warned DAP, Amanah and UMNO that similar provisions in their respective party constitutions
00:57could be likewise disabled by another Speaker in future.
01:01Johari had made the decision not to vacate the other five seats, Guamusang, Bukit Ganteng,
01:06Tanjung Karang, Kuala Kangsar and Jeli, on the grounds that Bersatu's anti-hopping provisions
01:12were unconstitutional.
01:14Project Sama also said one of the biggest flaws of the anti-hopping law was its failure
01:19to define the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's role, which it said should be purely administrative.
