00:13The Sugar Regulatory Administration is now planning to export raw sugar to the United States.
00:20According to SRA Administrator Paul Azcona,
00:24the Philippines may export up to 25,000 metric tons.
00:29He clarified that the Philippines is exporting sugar to America.
00:34This is considered a commitment by the U.S. as a long-time trade partner
00:40and a member of the World Trade Organization.
00:43This is also being done whenever the supply of raw sugar peaks
00:48or drops in demand for sugar.
00:51In 2021, the Philippines was the last to export sugar to the U.S.
00:56because the country prioritized its own needs for the next few years.
01:00That's actually 143,000 metric tons.
01:03So they reconsidered 25,000 and we were just informed in April.
01:10They will export, then they will be allowed to import.
01:14So they export raw, they import refined.
01:16What they're asking for is an import replenishment.
01:20As of July, the formal order for export is expected to be issued.
01:25In addition, SRA and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tio Laurel Jr.
01:31discussed the plan to import sugar.
01:34Tio Laurel Jr. first said that 200,000 metric tons of refined white sugar
01:41or puting asukal should be imported
01:44in order to fill the expected shortage
01:47in the low-supply period in August or September or before it arrives.
01:53As of now, the country's supply of sugar is at 800,000 metric tons
01:58while the monthly demand is at 242,000 metric tons.
02:03This means that the supply of sugar will only last for more than three months.
02:08Opening of milling is September 15.
02:11However, we have to remember that we need at least a two-month buffer stop
02:16all the time to keep the prices stable.
02:19One of our marching orders is to import if we need it and when we need it
02:25with a sufficient volume, not to affect our local farmers
02:30and to always ensure that our retail consumers have a stable supply.
02:35SRA insisted on increasing the production of sugar.
02:40This year, more than Php 120 million of start-up capital
02:45was distributed to cooperative sugarcane farmers
02:49who can use it to buy fertilizer, oil, and other agricultural needs.
02:55Php 66 million was distributed to those affected by El Niño
03:02who were given free irrigation, tractors, and other agricultural equipment.
