00:00A senior citizen who suffered a stroke seven times
00:03on the first day of the 2024 Masters International Athletics Championships.
00:08That's Bernadette Sinoy's story.
00:13At the age of 53,
00:15Tatay Romeo was the first to experience a stroke
00:18after retiring as a military officer.
00:20He's not yet at his peak
00:22because he experienced six strokes in the following years.
00:26Because of this, Tatay Romeo was encouraged by his friends
00:30to try exercising and enter the world of sports.
00:34Now that Tatay Romeo is 65 years old,
00:37he admitted that running helped him a lot in his health.
00:41I was paralyzed seven times because of a stroke.
00:45I told myself, I don't have a choice.
00:47When they saw me on Facebook,
00:49I was shaking because of body conditioning,
00:51my mind and my heart.
00:53They encouraged me.
00:54Suddenly, I didn't have a choice.
00:56They were old, but I thought they could do it, so I could do it too.
01:00So I tried, I joined.
01:02When I joined, I won against Colin, the U.S.
01:06It's not because of the stroke,
01:07it's not because of the pain,
01:09it's not because of negative things.
01:14Let's just be positive.
01:15Because if you believe in yourself, nothing is impossible.
01:19The American, Jill Chapman,
01:21tried to join the Javelin Throw event
01:23after her friend was diagnosed with it.
01:26I competed against women in their 60s, in their 70s, 75.
01:31It's just amazing to keep everyone active
01:33because we all need motion.
01:35Motion is lotion for all of our joints,
01:37especially our spinal system.
01:40Jill and Tatay Romeo are one of the hundreds of athletes
01:43and sports enthusiasts
01:45who entered the first day of the 2024
01:48Masters International Athletics Championships,
01:51where athletes in their 30s will compete
01:55and senior citizens who want to participate
01:58in various sports events.
02:00According to NAMSAP,
02:02age and gender are not a barrier
02:04for every athlete to have a chance
02:06to stand out in the field of strength.
02:10One of the goals of NAMSAP
02:12is to spread the effect of exercise
02:15throughout the Philippines.
02:19Because in other countries,
02:21people are playing for 100 plus years old.
02:23There are no grandchildren
02:28even if they are 90 plus years old, 95.
02:30You can see them running and jumping.
02:33So I hope this will also happen here in our country.
02:37Bernadette Pinoy for Pambansan TV in Bagong, Philippines.
