I own a Peloton - here's what it's like

00:00A lot has been made recently in the national news about Peloton the at-home
00:05spinning and yoga sensation from a few years ago and the fact that they're in
00:11trouble so I've got one and I wanted to talk you through exactly what it's like
00:15and why I like it.
00:18We've got the bike plus and I'll talk to you about the features of that in a minute but
00:23this is the kind of size of the machine and it's very heavy I had to come up two
00:29flights of stairs in our house and the guys weren't particularly happy about
00:32that and yeah so consider the size of it and the mat that it stands on the fact
00:39that it doesn't need to be plugged in and you also have some equipment there
00:44and which I'll talk you through but look at the size of it and consider whether
00:48that's something you could have in your house because I believe that the
00:53warranty is invalidated if you have it in a garage because that's it's not a
00:57habitable space and it's open to the elements the cold the damp etc.
01:05So when you when you buy in the machine you can opt for a package which we did and
01:11that was about 18 months ago and we did it because it was just going to be for
01:17us much easier than where we live keep going 20 minutes to the gym 20 minutes
01:24back from the gym we were wasting a lot of time and we wanted the convenience of
01:27having having the bike here so you get a package and the bike plus package I
01:32believe it was on sale about 18 months ago so just after Christmas and for
01:37about 2,000 pounds which is a lot of money and you do you do need to spend
01:42money on membership which I think we're paying 39 pounds a month for I just
01:46wanted to show you the shoes that you get or cleats as they call them so they
01:51clip on over here and proper cycling shoes that so it means that when you're
02:00when you're pedaling you're able to not worry about your foot slipping off the
02:05pedal and getting the most amount of power or watts through into the bike and
02:10also part of the package and you get to choose what light weights I went for
02:17these three I think they're three kilograms not three pounds and I could
02:21have gone for one or two on that and then these weights here I'll be honest
02:27with you I don't even know how big those weights are they're too big oh it says
02:3130 pounds or 13.6 kilograms too big I went too big because I didn't really
02:37know what I'd be using it for and yeah I'm not gonna be doing reps with them
02:41the three kilogram ones though they're fine for some light arm work okay so
02:48I'm on the Peloton now and I thought I'd show you this is the the heart rate
02:52monitor it goes around your arm so this is the touchscreen and you've got so
02:59I've got a 10-week streak on the go and I can find Facebook friends if I wanted
03:03to and I can that's home programs classes experiences so what you get as
03:10well is they had a Taylor Swift Taylor Swift collection artists series these
03:16are all the instructors here's some of my favorite instructors that it's
03:21recommended for me 20 minutes 30 minutes and if we look that's one that's
03:28happening at the minute that we could go on I've never actually done a live one
03:33I've always someone's that been pre-recorded but if I had a look on
03:38filters now say that I want to do 30 minutes click that so classes now these
03:51are all the different classes that you can do in half an hour some of them are
03:55in German any over here is a German guy cliffs a German guy but a lot of them
04:02are in English but the majority of them are English you're either going to get
04:05English or American instructors and you can flip through I mean there's
04:10thousands absolutely thousands if you don't like the spinning class you can
04:18have a look on experiences so scenic rides so if we clicked on that so what
04:24it is so for instance I have done this one I'm not going to go all the way
04:29through it you do get music as well here and for me that's a big part of it
04:32because we don't like the music I'm not feeling it I'm not enjoying it it's not
04:35as easy but you ride alongside essentially an instructor and you go
04:42this one's through London okay you can also do this is called lane break now
04:50for instance and they have collaborations with the likes of Cher etc you can do
04:55like country music but if I was to just pick one of them at random play moderate
05:03and that's all to do with the resistance which is this knob here you turn it you
05:08turn it to the right to make it harder to the left to make it easier so if we
05:12press start on that I actually don't want to do this but I'll show you 70s
05:16pop cooldown it brings up like these tracks now if I'm running that's it so
05:23if I wanted to make it easier go over there harder over this side and I'm doing
05:30I'm moving with this resistance knob here okay it's telling me that I need to
05:35be over here so I move the resistance bar just ride which is you go for as
05:41long as you want or as distance wise as long as you want time or distance wise
05:46and there's the scenic rides which you're not going with an instructor it's
05:51like you're on a bike so it's like someone's gone through the the scene
05:56with a GoPro on their helmet and if you go really slow it will take you on the
06:02route really slow and if you go really fast it will speed it up so it's as if
06:07you're there as if you're doing it so I've decided to go for a 30 minute
06:10classic rock ride with Bradley and Bradley is one of my favorite
06:15instructors you get a bit sad like that but what I'll do is I'll start and I'll
06:20show you a little bit what it's like you do get a warm-up okay just to talk
06:31you through this you've got your heart rate you've got your time you've got the
06:35strive score which is the effort down at the bottom that's the watts that you're
06:38producing there's a leaderboard there if you want to chase the leaderboard you've
06:42got the miles that you're covering obviously the instructor is talking to
06:46you the whole time and then afterwards here you get an app reading if you want
06:51to have a look at how well you've done so here you can see all the metrics the
06:54calories where you were your heart rate zones you can also see which muscles
07:00you've been working out and on this screen here you can see how many you've
07:06done in the month or the year and set your targets now what I really like is
07:10that it's easy it's convenient I actually enjoy doing it and you've also
07:15got the options for yoga Pilates you can link it up to your phone if you go
07:21for an outdoor walk an outdoor run it's really really user-friendly
