00:44of the genocidal war against the Palestinian population.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:54My name is Belén de los Santos and from El Salazar studios in Havana, Cuba, we begin
00:58with the news.
01:10The president of Venezuela and candidate for the great patriotic poll, Nicolás Maduro,
01:15led the great victory march in the capital Caracas as part of the beginning of his electoral
01:20campaign for elections on July 28th.
01:23Following the massive mobilization that started from the vicinity of PDVSA La Campiña towards
01:28the Medio Flores Palace, the national executive was received by the people amidst joy and
01:33signs of affection.
01:35The candidate of the great patriotic poll also thanked the militants who reaffirmed
01:38their support for a sure victory on July 28th.
01:42Upon his arrival to the stage, the national executive assured that after winning the presidential
01:47elections on July 28th, he will make sure that the Venezuelan extreme right wing and
01:52its U.S. allies are held accountable for their actions.
02:22All the neighbors, all the neighbors, men and women, I summon to all Venezuelan families,
02:39to the union, to unity.
02:44And the Labour Party in the United Kingdom has secured a landslide victory in the election
02:49to end 14 years of conservative rule.
02:52Labour leader Keir Starmer became the new prime minister of the country.
02:57The Labour Party obtained an absolute majority in the House of Commons as the Conservative
03:02Party faced its worst results in history.
03:06Former prime minister recognized the defeat and issued his resignation as prime minister,
03:11while Starmer officially became the new PM after ceremonial meeting with King Charles
03:17III.
03:18During his first statements, Starmer spoke of the importance of public service, the rebuilding
03:24of the health system, and stated that change begins now.
03:33Thank you, but a mandate like this comes with a great responsibility.
03:44Our task is nothing less than renewing the ideas that hold this country together.
03:52National renewal.
03:57Country first, party second isn't a slogan, it's the guiding principle everything we
04:03have done and must keep on doing.
04:07On the economy, on national security, on protecting our borders.
04:12The British people had to look us in the eye and see that we conserved their interests.
04:20And that work doesn't stop now.
04:23It never stops.
04:25The changes we've made are permanent, irreversible, and we must keep going.
04:31We ran as a changed Labour Party and we will govern as a changed Labour Party.
04:38The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called for Keir Starmer to congratulate
04:52him on his victory.
04:54Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides.
05:00That is something that should give us all confidence in our country's stability and
05:04future.
05:06The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight.
05:10There is much to learn and reflect on.
05:13And I take responsibility for the loss.
05:15We go now to France, where up to 200 aspirants to the left or centre deputies of parliament
05:21third in voting intention have withdrawn their candidacies during the last hours to avoid
05:27the triumph of the far right in the second round of legislative elections to be held
05:31on July 7th.
05:34Those who withdrew their candidacies belong to several political forces, but mainly come
05:38from the New Popular Front, an alliance between the France Insoumise and other formations
05:44of the traditional left and from the Coalition Together for the Republic created around the
05:50Renaissance party of President Emmanuel Macron from the centre.
05:54The far right national rally led with 32.2% of the votes in the first round of the legislative
06:00elections held on June 30th.
06:04Next came the New Popular Front with 29.1% of the votes, while Macron's coalition came
06:11in third place with 21.5%.
06:19And in Iran, on Friday, the second round of the presidential elections has started, in
06:24which candidates Massoud Bashar al-Khan and Saeed Jalili are facing off.
06:29This way, approximately 59,000 polling stations were set up to receive the more than 61 million
06:35Iranians who were summoned to exercise their right to vote.
06:39After a first round of elections held on June 28th, the reformist Pesetian and the principlist
06:45Jalili emerged as the two candidates with the highest number of votes.
06:50However, neither managed to reach an absolute majority, which is why they will face each
06:56other again in a second round.
06:59Voting for the run-off will continue until 6pm, when the counting of the votes will begin
07:04to decide who will be the new Iranian president.
07:13And early in the morning in the Iranian capital of Tehran, the country's top leader Ayatollah
07:18Sayyed Ali Khamenei was the first to exercise his right to vote.
07:23The leader of the Islamic Revolution praised the participation of the Iranian population
07:27in the second round of the presidential elections, and acknowledged that the levels of interest
07:32and mobilization of the citizens are significantly higher compared to the first round.
07:43I heard that the enthusiasm and interest of the people are stronger than before.
07:48Praise God for this.
07:49And if so, it will be gratifying, God willing.
07:52Our dear people will be able to vote and choose the best.

08:27Welcome back here from the South.
08:30In Argentina, the grandmothers and mothers of Plaza de Mayo demonstrated in front of
08:35the government house in defense of human rights and in rejection of the policies of the Javier
08:40Millet's administration.
08:42Within the framework of the historical marches of mothers of Plaza de Mayo, the main objective
08:47of this mobilization was to denounce the dismantling of the Secretariat of Human Rights and the
08:53layoffs in the spaces for memory and all the dependencies of the state orchestrated
08:59by Millet.
09:00In addition, the organizations presented a joint document before the government house
09:05that exposed their claim and rejection to these policies that effectively destroyed
09:10the state apparatus and principles of human rights.
09:20We continue in Argentina as the National Institute of Statistics reported that the
09:25economic activity in April dropped 1.7% year-on-year.
09:29This includes a 5.1% fall of the GDP and a daily economy that affects not only the companies,
09:36but also the general public.
09:38Our correspondent Juan Carlos Bartolotta with the details.
09:41Amid a strong rise of the informal or parallel US dollar, the impact of the economic recession
09:50on small and medium-sized companies, which generate the largest number of jobs, is becoming
09:57more and more noticeable every day.
10:08We are even facing a serious problem.
10:10If we do not take measures by the end of the year, there will be 300,000 less jobs in Argentina.
10:18And here is where we turn to the conscience, to the responsibility of our national deputies
10:23to draft laws, proposals that come to solve this great problem.
10:29Small and medium-sized businessmen weren't of the danger that Millet's economy policy
10:34poses to small and medium-sized industries.
10:39We are even going through a very serious situation in the national small and medium-sized industry,
10:44a crisis very rarely seen, where we have temporary suspensions of the companies that
10:50paralyze their production, because they have no sales, they are overstocked.
10:56This is evidently due to the fall of the market that in some cases reaches 60% depending on
11:03the item, and we say that this problem is not the fault of the small and medium-sized
11:09companies, it is not the fault of the manufacturers.
11:14Agricultural procedures, in this case of the cold cuts industry, state that the law
11:19of basis is insufficient to revert situations such as taxation.
11:25Until we make the second, third, fourth law, thinking mainly on the small and medium-sized
11:31companies, we do not want any gift.
11:34That is all, that time has passed.
11:36We want them to back off, and we are willing to help them, to tell them, to help them to
11:41see what steps can be taken out, that the control remains the same, the tax revenues
11:47increase, I can assure you that they increase, but with less paperwork, less taxes and with
11:54less regulations.
11:59This month the National Institute of Statistics and Census reported that in the fourth quarter
12:04of 2024, under Millet's administration, the gross domestic product fell by 5.1% in the
12:10year-on-year comparison, and unemployment grew to 7.7%.

12:19In other news, Bolivian military officer Vladimir Lupa Salamanca, accused of leading snipers
12:25during the attempted coup d'etat in Bolivia on June 26, was sent to prison and remanded,
12:30according to the government.
12:32Bolivian government minister Eduardo del Castillo stated that Lupa was in charge of the F-10
12:37special forces group of the Cotapachi unit in the central region of Cochabamba.
12:43Del Castillo assured that, according to police intelligence, the accused traveled in a military
12:47plane from Cochabamba to La Paz with five other soldiers and with weapons that were
12:53supposed to be used during the armed uprising.
12:57Prosecutor Franklin Alborta, head of the commission investigating the event on June 26, said that
13:03around 30 people, including civilians and military personnel, are being investigated.
13:13And Colombia's President Gustavo Pedro, on Thursday, called on the organization Gulf
13:17Clan to join the peace process he has been leading in the South American nation since
13:22the beginning of his term in office.
13:24From the village of Domingo Do, a remote area of the parliament of Choco, the president
13:30insisted on urging popular organization to overcome social inequalities and addressed
13:35the issue of security.
13:37He also called on the local population to reject violence in order to coexist peacefully
13:43and become industrial.
13:45Pedro recently urged the Gulf Clan, which is made up of some 1,700 members and has operations
13:52in 80% of Colombian territory, to abandon extortion and the criminal activities that
13:58finance them.
14:04Cyclone Beryl reached Mexican coast as a Category 3 hurricane.
14:08Authorities urged the population of the Quintana Roo state to take precautionary measures.
14:14According to Mexico's National Meteorological Service, the weather phenomenon maintains
14:18a trajectory towards the Yucatan Peninsula and is expected to impact during the early
14:23hours of Friday morning as a Category 3 or 2 hurricane in the town of Tulum.
14:30The authorities urged residents, tourists and the maritime navigation to take extreme
14:35precautions in the face of rain, winds and high waves, in addition to following the warnings
14:40and recommendations of the civil protection.
14:43In view of the situation, Cancun's international airport reported the cancellation of 284 flights
14:50and the suspension of others.
15:20Breaking news about bad weather.
15:34Mother Nature Angry Caught on Camera top 5 and top 10.
15:48Welcome back to From the South.

16:11being attacked by an Israeli-recognized plane in Al-Sika Street east of the Al-Juwaila camp.

16:56We stay in Palestine, where at least five people were killed by the Israeli army after
17:01an assault on the city of Yennen in the occupied West Bank.
17:04Waffen News Agency reported that in the early hours of Friday morning, the occupation forces
17:10stormed the Yennen refugee camp and besieged a house which was attacked with sniper missiles
17:16and drones, killing four young men between 20 and 30 years old.
17:21Clashes with Zionist soldiers broke out near the site in which another 54-year-old Palestinian
17:27was killed.
17:28Since last October 7th, in parallel to its genocidal war in Gaza, the Israeli army intensified
17:33its already frequent incursions into the occupied West Bank, where at least 566 Palestinians
17:40have been killed by soldiers and in violent episodes by Israeli settlers.
17:52Israel approved the construction of more than 5,000 new homes in illegal settlements
17:56and the legalization of three new colonies in the occupied West Bank, despite the rejection
18:03of the Palestinian authorities and governments of the region.
18:06The Israeli High Planning Council approved the construction of 5,295 housing units after
18:14announcing two days ago the declaration of 1,200 hectares of Palestinian land in the
18:20Jordan Valley as state land.
18:22This is the largest land seizure since the Oslo Accords of 1993.
18:27Numerous countries, including Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, as well
18:33as regional blocs, which include the European Union, the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation
18:38Council, have denounced these expansionist actions which violate international law.
18:44According to official figures, more than 250,000 Jewish settlers live in the occupied East
18:49Jerusalem area and another 500,000 in the rest of the occupied West Bank.
19:09The Caribbean Festival returns in 2024 to Santiago de Cuba.
19:13More than 300 foreigners from 16 countries are participating in the 43rd edition inaugurated
19:20at the Aradia Theater, with the presence of Beatriz Johnson, first secretary of the Communist
19:25Party of Cuba in this eastern province.
19:27Our correspondent Fabiola López gives us more details.
19:33The festival of fire is back.
19:39The drum sound, the color sparks, the joy rises and the rhythm bursts.
19:45Santiago de Cuba, the untamed city of this island, is consecrated as the most Caribbean
19:50of the Cuban cities.
19:55Cuba is going through one of the worst crises since the revolutionary triumph of 1959, as
20:02never before.
20:05Material shortages of all kinds insist on daily life and ravage the achievements of
20:10the revolutionary process.
20:15This is not the only hardship that this festival of culture has had to coexist with.
20:21It is good that young people and those who visit for the first time know that the festival
20:25of the Caribbean has never been suspended, but that it has been strengthened by solidarity.
20:39It is the inaugural gala at the Aradia Theater, the most important of the city, the appointment
20:44of the ideas, the arts, and the folklore promises intense days.
20:49We will be here these days celebrating this cultural force that comes from Africa and
20:55that blends with America, the original peoples, and today they are an alternative for the
21:00global world.
21:05Colloquiums and workshops, Byzantine, Haitian and Tejemaja festivities, Humus to Slave Rebellion,
21:13plastic arts, theater, cinema, parades and processions are just some of the activities
21:19on this 43rd edition, which has as a guest of honor the Brazilian state of Bahia, the
21:25scene of the most popular carnival in the South American giant.
21:28You have been over 40 times here to the Caribbean festival, why?
21:34What has summoned you here?
21:38Let's go to the history.
21:39I have been an admirer of the Cuban people since I was a child, with a desire to touch
21:44the land of Fidel and Marti and to have the opportunity to visit a square so famous in
21:50the Dominican Republic as the Revolution Square.
21:55When I came here, I wanted to go crazy and since 1998, I have been staying present at
22:02this festival.
22:09The undulating valley is coated by sea and mountains, called Santiago de Cuba, will be
22:14filled these days with celebration, joy, colors, flavor and Caribbean rhythm.
